The problem IS that I DON'T get a login prompt. I get the classic X-windows gray crosshatch screen with the X mouse cursor....at the same time if I examine the xdm.log, I can see it filling up with the error messages: Xlib: connection to "mike.bowes.com:1.0" refused by server Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key This message repeats for 10 tries then gives up and disables my display until I restart xdm. > > > > Disk space is not an issue...I have 20GB free. > > > > I have made sure that xdm is starting from inittab with: > > x:5:respawn:/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon > > Again, this isn't the problem, or you wouldn't have a login prompt. So Xsession is not being executed. (I already suspected this since I was not getting a login). > > This is part of my 'Divide and conquer' technique for solving > problems like this. Yes. This an effective technique. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about X to be able to backtrack to the problem. I don't know what gets called on the server side when an X session is started (other than xdm itself and now Xsession from your comment above). > > Keep splitting the problem in half, and determine what is working > and what is NOT working.
