The problem IS that I DON'T get a login prompt. I get the classic
X-windows gray crosshatch screen with the X mouse cursor....at the same
time if I examine the xdm.log, I can see it filling up with the error
messages:

Xlib: connection to "mike.bowes.com:1.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key

This message repeats for 10 tries then gives up and disables my display
until I restart xdm.

OK. Just to be sure, I did as you suggest and added some debug to
Xsession. The /tmp file did NOT get created. So Xsession is not being
executed. (I already suspected this since I was not getting a login).

Yes. This an effective technique. Unfortunately, I don't know enough
about X to be able to backtrack to the problem. I don't know what gets
called on the server side when an X session is started (other than xdm
itself and now Xsession from your comment above).
