Because of supporting ten years old hardware/CPU (linux-image-486).

No. They are identical servers with very same chroot for thin clients
(/opt/ltsp/i386).

I just installed Debian LTSP in my laptop (Virtualbox). Here is virtual
thin client/LXDE using 486 kernel.

You might like to check Skolelinux / Debian Edu project, they have also
documentation about load balancing.

But remember, your hardware is very old and weak. Skolelinux / Debian
Edu says:

"Thin clients can run on as low as 64 MiB RAM and 133 MHz processor,
though 128 MiB RAM and somewhat faster processors are recommended. For
running Iceweasel/Firefox and LibreOffice, 128 MiB RAM is a minimum
requirement. For workstations, diskless workstations and standalone PCs,
800 MHz, 320 MiB RAM are minimum requirements, though 512 or 1024 MiB
RAM will perform considerably better. Just a faster CPU will speed
things up."

https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/Requirements

"Note: Since such ten-year-old thin clients may also have trouble
running never versions of LibreOffice and Firefox/Iceweasel due to
pixmap caching issues, you may consider running thin clients with at
least 128 MB RAM, or upgrade the hardware, which will also give you the
benefit of being able to use them as diskless workstations."

Next week I play with Debian LTSP and load balancing, and if I find
something helpfull I let you know.

Best Regards Asmo Koskinen.
