What you're missing (and I apologize to Evan here, who I'm sure is a 
trustworthy and able technician, no personal insult intended.) is that 
Apple, like GM, doesn't want owners to go about fixing their own 
machines and figuring out that you don't need to pay a technician, at 
least for the simple stuff.

As with cars, you're supposed to support the whole system, and pay to 
have your computer repaired. It's nothing new - control of information 
gives corporations power.
