I did the test from the server machine and the telnet commands are 
allowed without any restrictions.
As I can't see any problem from the SMTP server side, I'm figuring out 
what operating system/web server/lan settings could be affecting 
specifically PHPMailer.
I'll try to look for similar problems in PHPMailer discussion lists.
