Check out www.freebikemaps.org, and if it doesn't break, then it came out
well. But I hesitate to use past tense verbs here. I've only got about 1/4
of the Baltimore City routes drawn in. I've gotta find a lawyer friend to
help write disclaimer stuff. Gazillions and bazillions of things to do,
and I suppose I'll be doing this stuff for years, now.
But Maptitude seems to be running fine on my server at home. (so far,
fingers crossed, eyes crossed... but I'm not cross. I'm pleased!)
As far as the exhibit went on Wednesday (past tense verb), it was nice to
spend around 12 hours talking to bicycle advocates in the legislative
building. And at a symposium at the evening, I raised my hand to ask about
public data access, and the Secretary of Transportation said that their
GIS data was in the public domain. Nice, given that they guy who did the
state bike route map (which stops at the city line) said that I could use
the data for.... $3000 per year.
I don't quite have a picture of what happens when more than one person
tries to access the server at the same time. Will this web application
keep working as more people discover it, I wonder?
Anyhow: if you know anyone with digital bike route data to contribute,
tell 'em they can upload files directly to the site. I'll convert them to
Maptitude, and a few weeks later, voila, they'll be on the map
My vision: a nationwide digital bike route layer...
