I read Charlie's article but did not find what was truly lacking in the
so-called "socialist countries": Independent working class organizations that
were inclusive, massive and democratic were not in existence to oppose the
restoration of the capital system. It took years of struggle to overthrow
capitalism in social revolutions that included Civil War, terror, and reaction.
But the capitalist restoration involved little to no struggle in those
authoritarian countries because there was no independent, organized force to
oppose it. It was the absence of independent working class and civic
organizations that were free of the authoritarian party and state that allowed
the restorations of the capital system with no internal social force to oppose
it.
