I paid about $700 for a refurb Macbook by watching the website for a couple
of weeks. It's indistinguishable from a new one.
I wouldn't want to pay much more than that for a PC since I don't use it in
a business or do
much of anything besides email and searches.
Right now I'm checking on the web to see which computers besides Compaqs
have card
readers. The old Compaqs card reader has been great for downloading
pictures from the
camera.

Did you price a Dell Precision? The 4600 which replaced my 4300 STARTS at
$1700. A $500 laptop is consumer grade, it will not relate quality-wise to
your Mac in any substantial way. The cheapest Mac now starts at $1200 you
should use that as your guide.

HP shows an HP ProBook 4530s Notebook PC for $539 which is listed
under "small business solutions", and 4 docking stations that range from
$85 to $137. I suppose that laptop would work with any of them.
Having an external on-off switch would be an advantage.

If you are looking for a desktop replacement laptop I also recommend
one of the "professional" level HP laptops. They have an available
option of docking stations that allow you to plug monitor, keyboard,
USB stuff, etc in then drop laptop directly in. Don't even need to
open, dock has power button. From laptop to desktop in less than five
seconds.
