It could be the problem we had with our 240D/3.0 once (also on vacation): the tangs driving the electrical switch had broken and jammed, preventing further turning. That was cured by removing the switch from the back of the lock assembly and installing a new switch (I have pictures of the process with the W123 switch, if you are interested).
