If your playback unit can handle it, you might try the -I 2 option to
mpeg2enc.  It results in mpeg2 encoding at just about the speed of mpeg1
encoding.  The trouble is, not all output devices handle an mpeg coded
with this option properly.  I know for sure that two different revisions
of the Sigma Hollywood+ cards choke on -I 2 coded mpegs.  But, if it works
for you, mpeg2enc will encode quite a bit faster.
