I'm sure it's mentioned elsewhere, but perhaps that part of the howto 
should mentioned the preferred (most-likely to work) sequence:

Start TV application
  Start Lavrec
  Stop Lavrec
Stop TV application

I think the howto is just trying to avoid starting or stopping the TV app
while lavrec is active.

my ati won't capture using lavrec, but the capture tool I use did
Very Bad Things(tm) when I shutdown xawtv (TV app) while recording.
Watching what gets captured works great.
