My next instrument set will consist of an NMEA 2000 backbone and
appropriate sensors and displays.  (www.nmea.org)
Marine instruments finally have an open standard for networking.  This
will allow you you to plug and play equipment from various
manufacturers.  Quite a few manufacturers have certified equipment.  The
marine instrument market has always been in a position of marketing
their whole system and not competing on a component basis.  So it will
take some time for the marketing to change.  Some companies such as
Maretron are pushing NMEA 2000 pretty hard. (www.maretron.com)

This way when some new autopilot, compass or plotter comes out you don't
have to buy a whole new system to take advantage of it.
