I have the low-cost alternative, which is a bowsprit-mounted wind
sensor. I know it is really too close to the water surface, but I
find it gives useful information, and I am happy with the compromise.
The sensor is vulnerable to damage, but you can buy a dozen of them
for the less than the cost of the Nexus rotating mast system! My
sensor has been underwater a few times, and I would not recommend it
if you regularly sail in big seas.
When I got a spinnaker last spring, I was concerned about it snagging
the sensor on a jibe. I redesigned the mount to place the base of the
sensor inside the bowsprit end cap, so there are no corners or sharp
edges, and it has not given any trouble.
