In the process of retrieving the necessary messages, I happened to try the
internet logged in as root (which I hadn't tried yet) and it worked fine.
Should have tried this sooner, I guess.  But I still get the same problems
when logged in with either of my two user accounts.

So the data below is from attempts from the non-working user account.  Of
course, as user, I could not use ifconfig or route to determine their
output. And, since the root account is working properly, I assume that their
output from the root account would be irrelevant, so I have not included it.

How shall I go about getting the user accounts to work like the root one is?

OK, here is a relevant exerpt from var/log/messages from the nonworking user
