What are we calling "special patches" here anyway? In my recent experience ... there was a bug that made a drive unavailable for ZFS to use. With the assistance of support, and the mailing list community, we were able to identify a bug number, and a fix had already been issued on opensolaris, but not yet released for sol10. It'll be included in 10u9 when that's available, but it was still in the verification process, so it wasn't "official" yet. In the end, we found another solution, so I didn't need that patch.
