While U8 did include a newer zpool format, existing pools are not upgraded by default. You need to explicitly run zpool upgrade. U8 installed a new version of grub that didn't seem to be backwards compatible, attempts to boot older BE's would fail. You needed to lumount your older BE under U8 and reinstall grub from that, at which point you could successfully boot your older BE's. I opened a ticket about it but I don't recall anything coming of it. I probably have the details in my mail archive; if anyones cares to know more I could dig them up. -- Paul B.
