Think of how to express plurality or negation for example. In some
languages you can't just paste bits of sentence and make sense. You have
to rephrase.
I think that "%s (%s)" is a fairly simple pattern that will work across
languages. Plurals are a completely different matter, and you shouldn't
conflate them just to pretend that "%s (%s)" would be bad for units of
measurement.
