I partly agree and partly don't agree with your assessment of AF lenses.  It
sounds like you haven't tried enough of them to have a wide experience.
Cheap, consumer zooms tend to feel just as you describe.  I have four
different ones and have tried many others.  But if you were to try the FA
*85, FA *200, FA *24, FA 43 limited, all of which I have, you would find
that the feel is much different.  It is not the same as an old manual focus
lens, but it is very usable.  I AF less than half the time and have been
doing MF photography for 25 years and am comfortable using the high quality
AF lenses in manual focus mode.  I think that perhaps high quality is really
the key issue.  These days there seems to be an over-abundance of poor
quality lenses to go around.  I have found that my FA * 200 is much quicker
to work with and just as precise as my A 400 5.6.
