You've confused technician/camera operator with photographer. Photographers make visually compelling images. Many full time working photographers just have enough technical knowledge to get what they want. (Many of them don't even have that and hire assistants/camera operators to handle the technical details). I know first hand of photographers that still do things all manual and it's not because they think that manual is better, but because they aren't interested or are intimidated by modern auto cameras. So, if you think that getting a properly exposed, in focus image recorded makes you a great photographer, it doesn't; it makes you a competent technician.
