That is most DEFINITELY the case, particularly when you're talking about the thread topic, which is rape. I'd like to address a couple of the comments made in the thread from a woman's point of view.... It's not always a woman's size or appearance that determines whether or not she is attacked. I'm 5'11", 160 lbs, fairly athletic build, and always have been. When I was in my early 20s I became the victim of a stalker. For about 2 months he took great pleasure in phoning me nightly...commenting on what I wore that day, where I went...everything. He told my roommate I was going to "get his 10 inches" and she said "well if that's all you got, don't bother her with it". LOL, that is probably not the best route to take with a psycho. One night someone did indeed break into the apartment while we were both home; it appeared that he'd taken a crowbar to the door frame and managed to get the door open. I screamed and threw a heavy pan at the door and he took off. Two cop cars arrived and remained in their cars for a FULL FIVE MINUTES chatting (I'd clearly interrupted a coffee break) before even bothering to get out of their cars and look for the guy. I knew from that moment on that depending on anyone else to protect you in this world is just ignorant. Anyway, he got more and more threatening and I just decided to move in with my boyfriend on the opposite side of the city. I was in college at the time and didn't own or carry a gun, but I never did hear from him again. About 3 years later I was living alone in an apartment, and there was a serial rapist who'd racked up about 20 victims on the north side of Indy. He'd done it by taking off the sliding glass patio doors and entering their apartments in each and every case. One night I was packing for a trip at 1am; every light in the apartment was on along with the stereo. I walked into my living room with a couple of suits to see someone at the back sliding glass door of my living room on the second story balcony. I screamed and ran out the front door and pulled the fire alarm. Neighbors came and I called the police. When I returned from that trip a week later I was afraid to go home or be alone in the apartment. I still didn't own or carry a gun. So the guy I was dating gave me one of his to use until the one I purchased that night was cleared by the waiting period, a 12-gauge pistol-grip Mossberg. One week later (2 weeks to the day from the first time he was there) he came back again...at 1am as I was packing for another trip. Again every light was on; he was clearly there to rape and not to rob. But this time I was standing in the dark hallway with that Mossberg in my hand. As he lifted the door off the tracks, he heard through an open window the frightening sound of me putting one in the chamber of the gun and took off running. The lesson I learned was to keep it loaded at all times; had I done so that night I'd have waited until he got in and blown the POS away. After that, I purchased a 40-caliber glock to carry in my purse and kept the Mossberg for the home. So I disagree with those who claim it's always the "little women" who are victims of rapists or stalkers. And I wholeheartedly agree that owning and carrying guns decreases the incidence of violence against women. If even half the women in this country were armed, I rather doubt we'd see the number of rapes we do. Why people don't see this is beyond me.
