It's possibly something called 'stiction' (a cross between friction and
stuck!). If the microdrive has been squashed at any time on the larger flat
surfaces, it could compress the innards and cause it to make odd noises as
well as rendering it unusable. This can sometimes be corrected by sending
them off to be repaired (by IBM, I think), but as the price of them has come
down so much,it may not be worth it.

I had one with this problem about 2 years ago, when the price of a
replacement was too high to warrant simply binning the old one!
