Well, you see, that kind of action is what has done great harm to people's views of Christianity. Non-believers love to cite such acts in history as proof the religion is meaningless. E.g. just give enough money and you'll buy your way to heaven. That's just about as far from Christianity as you can get. Unfortunately, I think the Papcy (if that's the correct term) is where the Catholic Church has gone the most wrong. As I understand it, the traditional Catholic teaching is that the Pope is almost synonymous with Christ when He was on Earth. I think that is wrong, and actually flies in the face of Biblical teaching.
