Many Ford diesels (later Mk2 Fiestas, Mk3 Fiestas and Mk4/5 Escorts) are fitted with the same gearbox ratios as the petrol engined cars, it was only the early Mk2 Fiestas and Mk3 Escort diesels that had higher gearing. You would have trouble finding the higher geared crownwheel and the matching pinion is part of the output shaft so you have to change that as well. A better option would be to fit the Escort LSD into a diesel box if you wanted it. But, check the difference on a spreadsheet to see if it's actually worth hunting down the higher geared box.

The Mondeo has the larger MTX75 gearbox with larger driveshafts, joints etc. But, yes, the engine should still bolt to your existing gearbox and solve all those problems.

Thanks Jim

But wouldn't that leave the car undergeared?
The diesel doesn't rev anywhere near as high as a petrol engine.

Do I compensate for this by swapping the crownwheel/pinion/final drive too? Does the LSD in the ERST box cause problems doing this?
