I now use a product called Datacatch Librarian; it catalogs or indexes the removable media so that you can seamlessly search it within Windows.
Their web site www.datacatch.com implies its not specfically built for music but does an awesome job anyway. It enables you to search for files on your external drives in the same standard Windows search; you can even browse the thumbnails of photos stored on your DVDs. You manage the physical media library in exactly the same way your put a Word document in a newly created folder, you locate your discs in a storage container icon on your desktop AND it tells you what slot their in.
