Gary,

i do believe that the mandatory logic is a form of "guessing" and a
dopey one at that. yes, the logic has hard and fast rules that are
predictable, but that doesn't mean its good or accurate to reality, it
just means it does what its told to do (a single artist mismatch = comp
in all cases assuming AA tags and comp=0 tags aren't present); i just
don't think thats always desirable. when i first mucked around with
SBS, this logic got TONS of my albums "ID'd" as comps, but that in
reality weren't comps.

i filed this bug:

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8324

but even though erland wrote the code and uploaded the patch, it wasn't
applied. to answer Phils question of what should happen if you didn't
have the logic, i say just let the artists propagate into the list,
whats the harm? don't like it, turn it back on or put proper tags.
the fact of the matter is almost all the big, important ripping apps
put an AA tag or comp tag by default now anyway, so the automatic VA
detection logic is basically moot as is, it only applies to a very
small percentage of users in the marketplace who somehow rip their
stuff and end up without either AA tags or comp tags, (EAC users).

furthermore, SBS has this problem with VA handling:

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9523

which led Phil to file this bug which i support:

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15604

i'm not saying the VA detection logic should be removed, or even off by
default, but it would be fine to disable it if a user wanted to, and it
might even help avoid some of the issues above, or the AV issues some
people have when "merge VA" happens in the scanner.

anyway...

my point to use is you don't have to worry about SBS outsmarting you IF
you do the following:

1. ALWAYS use AA tags on EVERYTHING.
2. ONLY assign Comp=1 tags on those things you WANT SBS or itunes to
know is a comp.

that puts the control in your hands, and out of SBS's.

what were you saying about dbpoweramp? it does or doesn't put a space
in your AA tags for your flacs?
