Fast Track jigs are the way to go. My second turnout took 45 minutes and worked flawlessly. Nice to sit at a bench and make turnouts.
I have built them in place and is a real pain literally. Turnouts on only wooden ties are never fully bulletproof. I have built them using paper templates and that takes about an hour an half and are never quite right. Would never build turnouts without a jig again.
