Welcome to the joy of hand laying track.

It should only cost a few dollars per turnout because you just need rails,
ties, solder and spikes. Now if you want to add other details the cost goes
up, but you have to add them to the commercial turnouts also. I did do a
detailed estimate some years ago and for plain track, it was a close in cost
between flextrack and hand laid, but turnouts and crossings were a lot
cheaper, if you can even buy what you want. Those numbers are probably
outdated by this time, but I expect the general outcome hasn't change. I
don't use the Fast Track jigs, but a lot of people like them. The biggest
advantage to hand laying besides smooth track, is that you can do anything
you want without relying on what is available commercially, or paying
someone to custom build it.

It does take longer, but I actually find spiking rail relaxing. (Two spikes
per rail per tie.)

Subject: {S-Scale List} Fast tracks....

Am considering hand laying my own track to save money and for bragging
rights. I was wondering if anyone has done a calculation of the cost to
build per turnout once you have the Fast Tracks tools and building jig.

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated....
