[313] OT: Oncetwice Aftermath

2002-04-08 Thread Phonopsia
Tomas Jirku, Safety Scissors and Sutekh all played Filler @ Blue Room in DC.
After seeing all three in the same order playing live the night before, it
was really wild seeing them DJ. Tomas Jirku played some really, really weird
stuff. I don't know where to even begin a description - he was all over the
abstract map, but mostly with downtempo beats. Quite a contrast from his
live set the night before. Safety Scissors started blaring an 80s punk/new
wave track. This was not your mother's electroclash - it was pretty severe.
:) Several people were seen cringeing, some people got up and danced. After
that he went everywhere from Technotronic (yes, he pumped up the jam) to
nosebleed IDM beets. This was really fun - that's about the only way I can
characterize it. Sutekh followed with more wide area coverage, but kept a
more consistent feel - also a lot of fun though. All three of these guys
DJed really well, despite the broad terrain. Filler resident, Milo took over
with the Hawtin remix of "Losing Control", and kept the
aisle-become-dancefloor alive until close. By 1:00, all of the performers
and the Filler regulars were wandering around with masking tape all over
themselves, which finally devolved into airborn tape balls zinging across
the club. Built by dorks, attended by dorks. Gotta love it. Lest we forget,
music can be a lot of fun. The following Monday's can be a very different
story though... ;)

So maybe it's the grey day here in NYC but I've been in the mood to listen to a
lot of the Tea Time sessions from Groovetech lately. If any of you guys haven't
checked out Alex Pattersons sets on his show give the archives a listen. I saw
him spin here in NYC at the Knitting Factory a few months ago and it was good
but his show gets really abstract sometimes. For an example and 313 connection
check out the March 7th show at around 13 minutes and listen for a few tracks.
The man would really fit a DEMF slot well.

John Tejada has two albums coming out in the next couple of months. I'm
told the one on Plug Research is going to be more on the IDM tip, the stuff
I heard sounded a little like Plaid. Expect this one around May.

He also has another LP on Robin Porter's Immigrant label, this will be more
on the techno tip. I heard this is suppose to be out in June.
http://www.immigrantindustries.com/

John Tejada has a collaboration with Polar (Certificate 18) coming out on
Pieter K's Metaformal label. I think this should be out soon. The A Side is
suppose to be kind of electro-ish, the b-side is drum n bass.

I think there are soundclips at http://www.metaformal.com

And John Tejada & Titonton Duvante also made some more tunes. I think this
time they are more on the drum n bass tip.

Speaking of Titonton, I heard he has a single on Archive Records coming out.

HBO's Six Feet Under pages list the music credits this season - not sure if
they're trying to prove how edgy they are or it's a prerequisite for their
music licensing contract. There's a soundtrack coming out w/ both Rae &
Christian and Photek remixes of the theme music. My fave musical moment this
season came when Brenda screamed and danced around her house to a Polly Jean
Harvey b-side.

Anyway, here's the credit for the Beltran track; interesting that they took
it from a comp:

Ace. Really atmospheric - good to play in a dark room, the kind of thing you
could play falling asleep. Like the music you might hear on a space
documentary - with sound effects. Space travel for people who wanna stay
home. Very conceptual. It's not something for the club environment,
necessarily, more different contexts. I think it's confused some people here
who want Purposemaker stuff! :)

[313] If You're In Scotland

2002-04-08 Thread Cyclone Wehner
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TripTych 2002
Tennent's Lager are pleased to announce that this year's tripTych music
festival will take place over the weekend of the 26th - 28th April, with
another programme of top quality events in venues across Glasgow, Edinburgh
and Aberdeen.

This year’s line-up is aimed squarely at the underground music community:
from cutting edge electronic experimentation to New York punk-funk, via deep
dub-reggae and sweet, soulful disco.

Artistic visionary, techno innovator and mentor to a generation of producers
and DJs, Derrick May, leads the bill, returning to tripTych following his
and Kevin Saunderson’s exclusive four-deck show last year, for three
blistering DJ sets.

Electronic virtuoso Richie Hawtin will also be taking to the stage in each
of the cities, breaking down the boundaries between DJ skills and live
performance with his revolutionary Final Scratch software. Another leading
light of the techno scene, Luke Slater, joins him for two live shows.

At the opposite end of the dance music spectrum is David Mancuso. The
grandfather of nightclubbing is putting in an eight hour stint behind the
decks, crafting his unique take on soul and funk-fuelled disco, recreating
the legendary atmosphere of The Loft on this side of the pond.

If Mancuso represents the old school, Osunlade takes inspiration from
similar territory with an eye on the future, drawing on his jazz and R&B
background to merge a forward-looking combination of African rhythms and
deepest house. Susumu Yokota, once known as a straight-up house and techno
producer has switched styles of late, and will be bringing his melodic
ambient soundscapes to the UK for the first time. We also welcome Matthew
Herbert - performing under his Radioboy guise –ripping apart consumer
culture with his bare hands, and sampling the results.

And that's just a taster from a wildly eclectic line-up that includes
everything from indie veterans Teenage Fanclub to the lyrical anarchy of
hip-hoppers Madlib...

I think you've got 'em confused with Liquid Liquid.

As far as Skidoo are concerned, Seven Songs and Urban Gamelan were recently
reissued through the band's label (www.roninrecords.com). The remainder of
their catalog is about to be reissued this year.

They never released anything on Factory to my knowledge. The original

I'd recommend them. Sadly I can't even remember their LP titles, but the gig

Whilst on the subject of Sonar (albeit vaguely) does anyone have any hints

far they're either all booked-up or too expensive. Even a link to a good
site that we might not know about would be helpful.

Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

They got the floorplan and remade the whole thing exactly as it was in an
old warehouse. V.Weird!!
The Hac was sort of in two parts, there was a front bit which was quite an
old building (which had Robs Records offices + Factory + Pleasure upstairs)
and a big warehouse type bit on the back.(Which was where the majority of
the club was) all joined up.
The warehouse bit went ages ago, and they kept the front bit. Originally
everyone thought that the old bit was being kept as part of the new flats,
but even that was knocked down too. I posted up on here about it, as I pass
it on my walk to work every day, and one day I came past and the whole
thing had gone, it was v.sad, something Manchester will regret sooner
rather than later.

BTW, I saw ACR in Manchester last week, they were brilliant, I believe
they're doing London too with Weatherall DJ'ing, London 313 heads should
check 'em out.

thought they had coz it looked very realistic. Considering that it's not

it true that it got converted into offices? Damn shame if it is, I wish I'd

Hey, I'll second that, It's pretty good. More of a comedy that anything
else.
The Hacienda scenes aren't actually the Hac, they built a set of it in an
old warehouse in Ancoats
and put on a massive party with free beer so they could get some 'club'
scenes.
In the bit where ACR and Joy Division are playing that gig, thats my old
club! (The Music Box) I painted those bloody walls and scrubbed the piss
stained bogs with an old toothbrush!! and the scenes of the 'Russell Club'
are in fact in Rockworld (the upstairs of The Music Box).

Erm, I had a little too much fun last night and I'm having trouble recalling
the specifics. I think it was when Claire was watching the Mom's sister do
Tai Chi. It may have been one of the parts when they were looking at her
art. It was just the "ambient" intro to one of the songs which played for
maybe 20 seconds (my copy was stolen so I can't verify the tune). It had
guitar in it. Last week they had Yo La Tengo. As if it wasn't evident from
watching the show, someone's got good taste. :)

Whilst on the subject of Sonar (albeit vaguely) does anyone have any hints

far they're either all booked-up or too expensive. Even a link to a good
site that we might not know about would be helpful.

Said cover is actually a Slapp Happy song, which was also covered by Pale

[313] A few tunes

2002-04-08 Thread Jonny McIntosh
If anyone's interested, I picked up the following choons lately:

Velocette "Changes In The Rhythm Of Life" (Parallel) - I'd never heard of
this label or Velocette, I'll confess, but it's excellent Detroity techno
with loads of personality and variety. There's also a tremendous dubbier 10"
floating about showing the man, Jason Williams, has got plenty o' range.

The Rapture "House Of Jealous Lovers" (DFA) - Morgan Geist remix is the
Metro Area style you'd expect but harder. James Duncan contributes his
trumpet playing again. Both combine to make this sound like a lost Dinosaur
L classic.

Ayro "Drink/Let This" (Omoa) - Storming broken beat with Stevie
Wonder/Herbie Hancock styled vocal and rhodes. I don't usually like that
West London sound, but the American take presented here is just infectiously
funky, and well, a damn good tune.

Future Beat Alliance "Head Ways" (Emoticon) - This is just sublime. I pulled
up a chair in front of my speakers and listened to it three times whilst
reading the paper on Saturday. The title track shows ridiculous mastery of
machines with the storming melody cheekily left to tantalise right at the
end. Unlike too much melodic techno to my ears, there's nothing nostalgic
about this, it's entirely forward looking, wicked electronic music. Tom must
be proud.

And I'm waiting on the James Cotton on Ghostly, new Frictional and Gherkin
Jerks reissue on Alleviated (it *is* Stomp The Beat.) to arrive in the post.
Loads of good records!

Susanna Hood and Nilan Perera will perform with radios prepared
to be constantly scanning through stations, lingering sometimes
on a clear signal and sometimes on the in-between static, bleeps
and whirs. Applying treatments and loops, they will be merging the
signals with electric guitar, voice and other odds and ends. The sound
information from the radio will direct the rest of their sound choices,
from mimicking to accompanying the radio. Sometimes the audience
will hear only their interpretation of the source materials and not
the sound of the radio itself.
