[arr] Rahman showing more preference to Hindi films?

Hai all,

If we take a look at the recent and
forthcoming films of Rahman .I think most of them are Hindi films. Like
Yuvarraj,Ghajini,Blue, Dilli 6, Ashithosh Gowarikar's next film etc.

 http://www.naachgaana.com/2008/11/12/a-brief-note-on-tu-muskura/#comments

So far I have been underwhelmed with the music of YUVVRAAJ. However,
Tu Muskura is an exception: the chorus of this song simply soars,
and yet with the undercurrent of loss that also haunted Tanha Tanha
(RANGEELA) and Tu Hi Tu (KABHI NA KABHI). That is, the song ranges
wide, but is never triumphant, an appropriate soundtrack to a love
 that is always already lost.

Unfortunately, the stanzas are not equal to the chorus — they aren't
bad, simply a bit banal given the ineffable choral strains that have
preceded them (and that mercifully recur later on in the song) —
although Javaid Ali's pulsating vocals towards song's end add yet
another dimension to the composition, marking it out as at once not
only an ARR song but a Subhash Ghai one as well.

On balance, I think I'm going to be listening to this song many many
 times in the near future.

Manmohini Morey is, I suspect, going to end up special in my book, but
other than it and Tu Muskura I find the rest of the album very
forgettable indeed. To be honest I had half-suspected as much, when I
saw that the film had a Western music kinda setting. ARR's best will
never be attempts at unalloyed Western music…

I was immediately struck by the female vocals on Tu Muskura, and
didn't initially recognize them as Alka's — Yagnik's voice seems
fuller here, as ARR evidently tries to recreate the effect of the
late Lata's voice in some of the Rahman/Lata numbers…

Even Gulzar's lyrics are quite disappointing, except for the ones in
 Tu Muskura…

Have a feeling that Latoo and Bachoo are going to be disco, dancy,

[arr] 'I' review SDM - 3.5/4

2008-11-15 Thread Anil Nair
And well though its not really a review I made the Subject similar to
Gops posts on SDM reviews :-)

Ok ...coming back to the point..Saw the movie today finally .
So 'I' = 'me'

Is it worth the hype? Well more of 'yes' and some 'no' -

Yes for the sheer brilliance in which raw India has been captured.
Yes for the vibrant colors and wonderful camera work.
Yes for the amazing cast selection and the brilliant potrayals of their
roles by each character.
Yes for the storyline (mind u ..if u think this is an exact adaptation of
QnA, you might be in for a surprise)
Yes for Danny Boyle - if it hadn't been for ARR, the name Danny Boyle would
still have made me go watch this movie
And of course the biggest Yes for ARR - A thumping, pulsating score worth
every bit in gold (my opinion) - Jai Ho is wonderful and so are the bits and
pieces of bgm's and other songs thrown in between.

A mild No - for editing (feel the editing could have been a better, made the
movie a little more crispier)
A mild No - because ..probably its something that captivates the rest of the
world (the fascination ..that is India) more than it might do us Indians
(brickbats please)
Is it a recommended watch - Yes ..defnitely though I would have loved to
hear more ARR stuff in there.
After all...ain't that what we Rahmaniacs wish for.

I remember that some 10 years ago, the only complaint of people not
liking ARR were: 1. his music is repetitive, 2. his music is not
understood (samajh mein nahin aata). And that clearly signified that
they have not heard the song enough to let it grow on them so they are
not liking it. Then, that didn't hurt.

But, I am finding that there are more comments of the above type at
various places. ARR's new brand of instant-like, no-need-to-grow kind of
music must be getting him several new fans and several bad comments.

[arr] A.R. Rahman: “Danny wanted it loud”

2008-11-15 Thread Vithur
A.R. Rahman: Danny wanted it loud Posted by Guy
Lodgehttp://www.incontention.com/?author=6· 4:53 am · November 14th,
2008

I have no idea what the Academy's
fussyhttp://www.incontention.com/?p=2911music branch will make of
it, but A.R. Rahman's busy, boisterous score for
Slumdog Millionaire is one of my favourite efforts in the field this year.
Fusing contemporary Indian pop with more traditional Bollywood motifs and
flashes of electronica, it's an achievement as limber and witty as the film
it accompanies.

Rahman has long been revered, both as a composer and a pop star, in his
native India, but he's only recently begun testing Western waters. I
appreciated his elaborately heightened contributions to last year's
Elizabeth: The Golden Age more than most, but Slumdog should really make
his name in this part of the world.

There's a brief but insightful
interviewhttp://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2008/11/ar_rahman_on_slumdogs_sound.htmlwith
Rahman over at Vulture, in which he discusses the considerable
differences between working for Bollywood and working for Boyle — a
difference over over 100 musical cues, for starters. In the light of a
discussion http://www.incontention.com/?p=2911 going on a recent comments
thread about how a score should operate within a film, I thought this
statement rather interesting:

What's good about [Boyle] is that he likes how Indian films mix music. You
push it and it comes out. We wanted it edgy, upfront. He said every piece of
music was going to be a piece by itself. Normally some directors suppress
music — they always want the effects to be loud and the music to be softer.
Danny wanted it loud.

He also talks about working with the brilliant M.I.A. on an original track
for the film, called O… Saya:

We met before but never worked before. M.I.A., she's a real powerhouse.
Somebody played me her CD and I thought, *Who's this girl? *She came here
and knew all my work, had followed my work for ages. I said Cut the crap,
this my idol crap. You have to teach me. We started working in India, then
we e-mailed the track back and forth. She did the vocals in England. I did
the rest in India.

O… Saya is vividly used early on in the film, and I haven't been able to
shake the hook from my head for a fortnight. It's certainly one of the most
exciting original songs from a film I've heard in 2008 — which I don't mean
as the faint praise that it sounds like.

I was hoping I could post it here, but like much of the film's music, it's
proving elusive (to me, at least) on the web. To make up for it, here's the
scene which so superbly incorporates Paper Planes. If you haven't seen the
film yet, I'd recommend you wait to get the full impact of it in the cinema,
but for the already-exposed (or the impatient), enjoy:

Hey all you A R Rahman fans and the others,

I have noticed that many of us hardcore Rahman fans go over the top with our
'fury' when something bad , or if there is some sort of criticism written about
Rahman. Why, why why???

Do we need to really prove to the others that Rahman has justified the music in
all of his albums?? We know that already!!! and we also know that he will do
the same with all of his upcoming albums.. People talk... let them! We dont
have to prove a point to them.. Rahman does that for us anyway. And we do love
him and support him unconditionally, dont we?

For example, there was this bloke who said he did not like the guzarish song
from ghajini. All of a sudden, many of you's jumped on him saying he was absurd
etc etc. As far as I know, he just voiced his opinion. Each one has his
tastes..

No one can force anyone to like a particular type of music. Rahman caters to a
wide audience with his variety and rightly so, he has the most fans from all of
the Indian celebrities.

Rahman himself has quoted as being a fan of Yuvan's music. For Rahman, music is
universal. If our so called 'boss' can be modest, so can WE!! If someone says,
this music of Rahman is his worst... Good for him, he probably wants to lower
his standards in the type of music that he listens to.. We cant help him, can
we?

So please dont think we HAVE to prove that we are fans of A R Rahman.. If we
weren't, we wouldnt have joined this group; now would we??

So it is my humble request to stop overcrowding our inboxes with words of
hatred, fury and irritation.

Cheers,
Roshan.

Director Kala Prabhu and actor Shanthanu's maiden venture 'Sakkarakatti'
has gone ahead to complete a successful 50-day run across theatres.

The movie produced by Kalaipuli S Thanu and directed by his son Kala Prabhu
had musical score by A R Rahman. Catchy numbers Taxi Taxi, Chinamma was the
craze among the youngsters. The music itself gave it a grand opening and
pulled the crowds to the theatres.

Though the movie received average reviews from the mass and the media,
Sakkarakatti has now gone ahead to run 50-days. The good news is that the
daddy Thanu has roped in his son Kalaprabhu to do another movie for his
 Kalaipuli International.

Kalaprabhu has completed the story and screenplay and search is on for the
 star cast.

2008-11-15 Thread Vithur
The heart of the KM Music Conservatory in Chennai is a large, quite bare
room on its first floor. There's a couch lurking by one wall, and a
smattering of chairs, but the room's focus is a piano floating off-centre.
On or near this piano, the Conservatory's students rehearse through the day,
the music flowing up and into the building's arteries—its air-conditioning
ducts—like warm, life-giving blood.

Sitting in a little office off that central room, Joshua Pollock hears the
music and smiles. It's like that almost all day, he says. I'll walk by at
9pm and I'll see people playing, or helping each other out. I've never seen
anything like it in the West.

Pollock is the Conservatory's violin instructor, one of the six startlingly
young, freshly graduated teachers who have been recruited from music schools
overseas to fulfil a long-harboured yen of A. R. Rahman. To start a
conservatory like this has been his dream for close to 10 years now, says
V. Selvakumar, managing director of the KM Music Conservatory (what the
initials KM stand for is Rahman's own secret. He won't even tell me!
Selvakumar says).

The Conservatory aims to offer (for the first time in India, its brochure
claims) training courses of collegiate intensity in not only Western
classical music but also in music technology and audio engineering—which is
where Selvakumar comes in.
Dream come true: Rahman has been wanting to start a conservatory like
this for close to 10 years.
For five years, Selvakumar has owned and operated Audio Media Education,
India's first Apple-authorized training centre for digital music production.
When I first meet him, he has just finished teaching a 2-hour class in an
impressively equipped studio. Just outside the classroom, in a
non-air-conditioned lobby, he proceeds to light and rapidly smoke four
cigarettes in a row.

People today still think that it's risky to be a professional musician, so
there's very little advanced training available at a wide level, Selvakumar
says. The Trinity College courses are there, but only up to a level that
students in the West attain even while they're in school.

As a result of that, and also because of the increasingly electronic nature
of most compositions, Rahman sensed a decline in the quality of live music.
Every good violinist around today, for example, is from his dad's
generation, Selvakumar says.

The culture of the classical orchestra has declined in India. Maybe Zubin
Mehta could have revived it, but he has orchestras abroad, Rahman says.
People have started thinking that the synthesizer can take over for the
orchestra. But that's just not true.

It seems like an odd observation from Rahman, the man who pushed Indian film
music into the electronic age, and who once said that the electronic
synthesizer was his favourite instrument. His scores are characteristically
as layered as bebinca, with a dozen different sounds baked seamlessly
together in the oven of technology.

I am curious about how they are calculating 50 days and jubilees
 nowadays?

I mean, a few days ago, a film was releasing only in a single theater in
a city in four shows a days, so it was easy to count days.

Nowadays, it is unusually released in more than one theater having 4
shows a day, and multiplexes show even more shows, 6 or more a day on
 their various screen.

A recent film (probably fashion) got released in 4 multiplexes showing a
total of 24 shows in a day, plus in 2 cinema halls showing 4 shows a
days. That would mean 32 shows a day, that is equivalent to 8 days
equivalent if we count older 4 shows per day method.

Now, with 8 days per day, it would give 56 days equivalent of screenings
in a week that means any film running this way would complete 50 days in
the first week itself, by older standards.

How do they calculate it nowadays when various cities are screening in
different counts of theaters and multiplexes? In bombay, if a movie is
released in enough number of theatres, it might be completing 200 shows
(50 days equivalent) in a single day.

[arr] I make all my films with equal passion: Subhash Ghai

2008-11-15 Thread Vithur
I make all my films with equal passion: Subhash Ghai

http://www.hindustantimes.com/StoryPage/StoryPage.aspx?sectionName=HomePageid=6b05509f-3721-4e96-9e90-46aed7b5dde8MatchID1=4853TeamID1=7TeamID2=4MatchType1=2SeriesID1=1222PrimaryID=4853Headline=I+make+all+my+films+with+equal+passion%3a+Subhash+Ghai

Larger than life is a tag one associates fairly easily with Subhash Ghai.
Not for nothing has his brand of cinema been termed the ultimate *desi
masala*. That he is still a name to reckon with after all these years in a
notoriously fickle industry is an achievement in itself. A key to his
enduring appeal probably lies in his passion for, and involvement in, his
films. A few days before the release of his new film *Yuvvraaj*, he is as
busy as on the first day of the shoot.

His last two films, *Kisna *and *Black White*, were two of the biggest
duds in his career, and Ghai knows exactly how much is riding on the success
of *Yuvvraaj*. Watch the film because it's Subhash Ghai cinema… watch it
because it carries a lot of expectations, he says.

His conviction is infectious. But he knows his job well and knows also that
the biggest stars in the industry want to work with him despite the flops,
which gives him faith in *Yuvvraaj. *I make all my films with equal passion
and there's always the emotional quotient. *Yuvvraaj *is no different, he
says. Immediately after which he adds that it isn't his biggest film,
reserving that description for the likes of *Karma *and *Saudagar*.

With a cast featuring Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Zayed Khan,
and with music by AR Rahman, Ghai's observation may cause scepticism, but he
is nothing if not practical. Remind him of the hits he has churned out in
the past, like *Hero*, *Ram Lakhan*, *Saudagar*, *Pardes *or *Khalnayak *in
an attempt to draw parallels with *Yuvvraaj*, and Ghai's disclaimer is
swift. Don't expect too much because it's commercial cinema, but expect a
lot because it's Subhash Ghai cinema, he keeps saying. This is probably
Ghai's way of indicating that *Yuvvraaj *has all the ingredients to put him
back in the race.

Which brings us to the budget. Ghai may insist that *Yuvvraaj *is not his
biggest film, but its mega budget has already made it a talking point.
Admittedly, Ghai is no stranger to big budgets, but he says, *Yuvvraaj *isn't
the biggest release from (his production house) Mukta Arts.

So that's that. The other point of interest is what kind of surprise Ghai
will spring, since he specialises in them. Be it the revival of the angry
young man through Jackie Shroff in *Hero *or the resurgence of the anti-hero
through Sanjay Dutt in *Khalnayak*, a twist in the tale is mandatory in any
Mukta Arts production.

In response, Ghai launches into a plot summary. Turns out *Yuvvraaj *is a
tale of three brothers battling to inherit their father's property. It's a
lot like *Ram Lakhan*… brotherhood wins in the end, he says. His reliable
warhorse Anil Kapoor plays the eldest brother, though Ghai finds his
protagonist in Salman Khan, who he hasn't worked with earlier. But Anil's
is the most delicate role, Ghai clarifies quickly. And the story isn't
about three characters but four. You will see Katrina in her best role so
far.

That may come as a real surprise. Not even her best friend would call
Katrina, bless her flawless face, a thespian. But acting opposite beau
Salman for one of the few times in her career may bring out the best in her.
As for Salman, he certainly has much to live up to. I tried to bring out
the actor in him, says Ghai. That might surprise a few people, too.

In what could be a smart move, Ghai has given Salman a look that may remind
us of the star's early days. I present Salman and Katrina the way they are
in real life… they love, they fight... It reminds you of the Dharmendra-Hema
Malini chemistry, he says.

Wrapped up in *Yuvvraaj*, Ghai hasn't seen the remake of his classic *Karz*.
But he is happy to accept it as a compliment. I won't remake my films but I
would love remakes by others. Fair enough.

music and smiles. It's like that almost all day, he says. I'll walk by at
9pm and I'll see people playing, or helping each other out. I've never seen
anything like it in the West.

Pollock is the Conservatory' s violin instructor, one of the six startlingly
young, freshly graduated teachers who have been recruited from music schools
overseas to fulfil a long-harboured yen of A. R. Rahman. To start a
conservatory like this has been his dream for close to 10 years now, says V.
Selvakumar, managing director of the KM Music Conservatory (what the initials
KM stand for is Rahman's own secret. He won't even tell me! Selvakumar
says).

The Conservatory aims to offer (for the first time in India, its brochure
claims) training courses of collegiate intensity in not only Western classical
music but also in music technology and audio engineering—which is where
Selvakumar comes in.

Dream come true: Rahman has been wanting to start a conservatory like this for
close to 10 years. For five years, Selvakumar has owned and operated Audio
Media Education, India's first Apple-authorized training centre for digital
music production. When I first meet him, he has just finished teaching a 2-hour
class in an impressively equipped studio.

As a result of that, and also because of the increasingly electronic nature of
most compositions, Rahman sensed a decline in the quality of live music. Every
good violinist around today, for example, is from his dad's generation,
Selvakumar says.

His scores are characteristically as
layered as bebinca, with a dozen different sounds baked seamlessly together in
the oven of technology.

Re: [arr] Rahman showing more preference to Hindi films?

2008-11-15 Thread Aakarsh

Yes, but showing more preference to Hindi films is not wrong. I think ARR
judges films according to the merits of script/film-maker rather than just
language. It is evident, that he got to work with some of the good film-makers
on the scene today.

I am sure he would give significance to tamil films too, provided more tamil
film-makers approach him with interesting stories and not run-of-the-mill ones.
what is the point in composing music for just some film which doesnt
excite/challenge him. Not all film-makers are good enough. And not all good
film-makers approach ARR. So, there are several factors which act like filters
you see.
Lets keep our eyes and ears open to music...and music does not have language.

 http://www.naachgaana.com/2008/11/12/a-brief-note-on-tu-muskura/#comments

Even Gulzar's lyrics are quite disappointing, except for the ones in
 Tu Muskura…

Seed of a relationship gets sown, it sprouts, grows, buds, gets flower,
gets fruit, after a long duration of caring.

What is wrong in mentioning that?

The same lyricist's song Beedi jalailey jigar se piya... Jigar maa

Gulgaar ( deliberate misspelled ) should not be considered for any

 until
the next movie he comes out with some sensibilites.

I concede that Gulzar's lyrics in Yuvvraaj are not upto his usual high
standards, still what you are saying is because you failed to get them.

Same case in Jodha Akbar by Javed Akhtar who tries to fit in real
 words
like pearls in a neck lace of a tune... He is the current
 wordsmith.

yeah, that is what I also think he is. He works with words, not with
concepts/ feelings.

But faltered in one line Azeem usshaan Shehenshah... A
shahensha can not be Azeem ushshaan but a building of architectural
importance can be Azeem usshshaan or a movie (like Moghle Azam could
be an Azeemushshan movie, or a literary/cultural creativity can be
coined as Azeem ushshaan. In real urdu sense it could have been
Azeemul Martabath Shahensha or an Azeem Baadshah or BaadShah-e-Azam.

So, you have no objection to Azeem, but have objection to Shaan.

Well, Shaan itself is a proper noun, a name of a person, I have friends
with that name and you might have heard of singer Shaan (Sagarika duo).

If shaan can't be used for human beings, how would humans get named thusly?

Even his most popular number EK ladki ko dekha to Aisa lagaa is a
bigtime lift from the poetry of a famous Pakistani poet.

Which one, btw?

In any case, copying/ getting inspired is a different topic than wrong
usages of words/ concepts in poems.

unbelievably T-Series and Subhash Ghai did not bother to proof read
the inlays of the songs list, for example : To meri dost hain ??? it
shoud have been Too meri dost haey or Hai.

Absolutely correct.

You got it right. That's a stupid mistake the music companies have put.
I don't this ARR/ Subhash Ghai have anything to do with it.

The show man I thought is
a perfectionist... where is the perfection ??? where are his
wonderful ears for good music (Javed Ali's singing is totally un
audible as orchestra is so loud), good lyrics (Choli ke peechey kya
hai) A layer of the flute of choli ke peechey kya hai tune can be
heard in To meri dost hai.

All the persons you have mentioned have their share of mistakes, but you

New Delhi (IANS): Fans of Bollywood
star Aamir Khan will be delighted to see the talented actor doing a
completely western dance, a la “Koi Kahe kehta rahe” from the hit “Dil
Chahta Hai”, in his forthcoming film “Ghajini”.

“It was a task making Aamir dance to a
song which was supposed to have western moves. But I was highly
impressed to see his classic dance skills,” choreographer Ahmed Khan
told IANS.

“It is a great song. It will definitely
hit the charts and this is also my best work ever. I'm sure it will be
appreciated, he added.

Viewers have already tasted a sample of
Aamir's work with the song “Guzarish...” from “Ghajini” and are
appreciating it for its simple yet classy choreography shot in Namibia.

Aamir has teamed with south Indian actress Asin for the film.

[arr] The much anticipated GHAJINI audio is expected to be released/launched today.

2008-11-15 Thread Vithur
GHAJINI: Sonu makes an exception for Rahman

When the first visuals of the melodious romantic track, Guzarish, from the
Aamir Khan–Asin starrer, GHAJINI were aired, almost everyone was unanimous
that the melodious number was rendered by the king of love ballads, Sonu
Nigam. To an extent they were right, and to an extent wrong! Right in the
sense that the hauntingly beautiful humming in the beginning of the
soundtrack is indeed by Sonu and wrong because Prasoon Joshi's lovely lyrics
have been sung by Javed Ali of Jashn–e–Bahara, (JODHAA–AKBAR) fame.

Sonu is there only as a guest vocalist, lending his unique appeal to the
song which can be called its USP as well as its highlight and also forms the
background music in the promos. The extremely choosy and busy Sonu has made
this (a sort of singing guest appearance!) an exception for the music
maestro A.R.Rahman, whom he shares a great bond with ever since his DIL SE
days right up to YUVVRAAJ .

The much anticipated GHAJINI audio is expected to be released/launched
today.

[arr] Subhash Ghai, A.R. Rahman and Gulzar have a winner in hands.

2008-11-15 Thread Vithur
Subhash Ghai is very different from other directors.

Synopsis

Yuvvraaj is musical story of a fragmented family of three brothers Deven
Yuvvraaj (Salman Khan), Gyanesh (Anil Kapoor) and Danny (Zayed Khan)
fighting and playing games with each other to inherit their father's wealth.
The story takes a curve when Anushka (Katrina Kaif) comes in to explain them
the power of relationships over the power of money by using music to bind
the love between them.

Trivia

* For the last couple of days, Subhash Ghai shot with Zayed Khan's duplicate
using back and far away shots for his movie Yuvvraaj. Zayed was stuck in the
Bahamas; shooting for Blue and his producers Shree Ahstavinayak did not
release him till he completed their schedule

* If initial sound of YUVVRAAJ is any indication, Subhash Ghai, A.R. Rahman
and Gulzar have a winner in hands. The teasers of this yet another magnum
opus from Ghai are out and so far, reactions from all around have been
positive all the way.

* Though one is yet to hear the words in the song, just the sound of piano
playing in the background with some well etched frames featuring the quartet
of Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Zayed Khan are collectively
good enough to promise a lot in the offering. Add to that a lavish look of
the film and one can almost sense a TAAL round the corner.

* Years back Ghai and Rahman had created magic with TAAL which finds itself
amongst one of the all time great soundtracks. Though Rahman (along with
Ismail Darbar) did come up with a very good soundtrack in KISNA as well, it
went largely unnoticed. Now with YUVVRAAJ, Ghai is back with Rahman and one
expects nothing but magic from the showman and the maestro!

Quotes

* Subhash Ghai is very different from other directors. He has really worked
hard on the visuals. They look colourful and romantic. It's almost treated
in a musical way where it's more realistic than just background music. - A.
R. Rahman

* When I saw the songs of Yuvvraaj on screen, I sent a message to Rahman
saying that they were magnificent, and this is a very honest opinion of his
songs and picturization. Great showman puts up a great show! I think the
performances of Subhash's Yuvvraaj will go a long way in carrying this film
ahead .It touches your heart. - Gulzar

* When Rahman and Subhashji come together, they give you the best music.
The music of Yuvvraaj is outstanding. Its very soulful, peaceful and carries
a sweetness of its own with powerful lyrical value. - Salman Khan

* I think it's gonna rock, well, its gonna orchestrate... It's going to
reach a lot of people... and touch their minds and souls' - Shridhar (Sound
Engineer ' Yuvvraaj

The movie produced by Kalaipuli S Thanu and directed by his son Kala

was the craze among the youngsters. The music itself gave it a grand opening
and pulled the crowds to the theatres.

Though the movie received average reviews from the mass and the media,

Whatever little I have heard of Harris, I feel that he is quite
imaginative and is capable of conceiving and composing original music.

Thus, the charge of him copying ARR's songs appears odd to me. Could
be that he uses similar style, arrangments that ARR had brought into
bollywood music, but was it really an outright copy? Could you give some

Sonu is there only as a guest vocalist, lending his unique appeal to the

Yuvarraj,Ghajini, Blue, Dilli 6, Ashithosh Gowarikar's next film etc.
 Exception is Yanthran(Robot) .

[arr] Rahman has nullified one major criticism

2008-11-15 Thread Chord
My parents, who are music lovers and very knowledgeable about
classical music, have always admired Rahman's music. However, there
was always a BUT whenever they would talk about Rahman, or if I was
praising Rahman's music in front of them. That BUT was followed by,
Rahman is a genius, has different music, but he's more into rhythm
and his songs are very difficult to sing. Even on music reality
shows like SaReGaMaPa, previously, when someone would sing a Rahman
song, at least one of the judges would say, Yeh Gaana Bohut Mushkil
hai, or This song is very difficult.

Granted, my parents and others from that generation have not heard
Rahman's music in total or to the extent that we have, so they are not
as aware of many of the timeless melodies in both Hindi and Tamil by him.

Since, Guru, however, and esp this year, however, I have noticed a big
change in not only my parents' attitudes towards Rahman, but from
others' from that generation, who revere the timeless mmelodies from
their time. Whenever I bring up Rahman now, they are all praise and
have no more BUT or HOWEVER in their descriptions. They are
listening to his CDs more and even revisiting old classics from
Rahman, which they previously would label as too rhythmic or too
difficult to sing. Maybe they are getting used to his style, but I
have a feeling they are recognizing a shift in emphasis as described
below.

I too have noticed that Rahman has been emphasizing melody much more
of late and creating tunes that are much easier to follow and digest,
yet not compromising his signture or brilliance. There may be changes
in his arrangements, sound, etc., but I really do think that Rahman's
sense of melodic composition has been more emphasized with better
contours and form. Since Roja, Rahman has always been a melody king,
but I feel that he is letting the melody and the singer take on a more
important role in his compositions than sound, some arrangements, and
rhythm. For the elders, it's a welcome change. For some of us
youngsters, and Rahman fans, it's not as welcomed.

As far as I'm concerned, Rahman is THE only torch bearer from the
evergreen era of bollywood music which had timeless melodies that are
enjoyed even today. Just goes to show how Rahman's music is
appreciated by all regions and all ages.

[arr] Difference b/w Hindi Ghajini Tamil Ghajini in terms of Picturisation

2008-11-15 Thread aneeshksasi

Hai all,

New promos of Hindi ghajini itself reveals
that picturisation of songs and some of the scenes in new Ghajini looks
good than Tamil Ghajini. Hope that Rahman's BGM in Ghajini really will
make the difference in New Ghajini than old.

[arr] Request to Rahman: Don't give up scoring for period films

2008-11-15 Thread Chord
I was listening to a 40 song compilation of ARR songs from his period
films scoresZubeidaa, Lagaan, 1947 Earth, Water, LOBS, Mangal
Pandey, Bose, Jodha Akbar, Guru, Kisnasome of his best
compositions are in these films. Outside of period scores, when do we
really get to hear ARR score semi-classical pieces with ethnic
percussion and instrumentation? Rarely. Use of tablas, dholaks,
ghungrus, sitar, sarangi, flute, shivamani's drums, naveen's
flute.most notable in period film scores, at least lately.
