Here I am though, getting sucked into wasting time pursuing Ron Miller. I also was able to verify yesterday that Ron did not return my car cover. I asked him about it once before and as usual he did not respond to a direct question. I checked while I was out there yesterday though, and the cover is not there. So, now he has over $500 worth of my personal property that he has not returned. The cover is a big problem because beginning 8/3 I have to start storing the car outside for a little while. You missed the version of Ron's web page where he mentioned my business. I shot him a very quick email about that, and he had enough sense to take that off the page. RE: [Chevelle-list] blown head gasket
Title: Message I'm sure by now you have completed the project, if not, e-mail me offline, and I can give you a few pointers. The same thing happened to me from a bad thermostat, except what I thought was a blown head gasket, turned out to be a cracked head. Did you check which side was blowin white smoke before you tore the motor apart? It could have saved you half the work. By the way, I ran mineral spirits through my engine before reassembly, to clear out all the water and polluted oil. Once you finish, run it for about 20 minutes, and then do an oil change. Sarge -Original Message-From: Rodney. [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, July 26, 2003 9:02 AMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: [Chevelle-list] blown head gasket Let me see if this will go through this time. Hey guys... I need some advice. I've never taken an engine apart before (until tonight). I blew a head gasket on my new crate engine (thermostat stuck). At the time, I thought I pulled off the road and got water in the rad. in time before any damage. I then had problems starting the car, so I thought the starter was going bad. I checked the oil at that time to make sure it looked okay and that I didn't blow a head gasket. I replaced the starter and had no problems starting for a couple of days. Then I started having starting problems again. I checked the rad. and I had mysterious disappearance of coolant and no visible leaks. So I checked the oil again and this time it looked like a chocolate milk shake. So I knew I had a blown head gasket. I was going to have a shop do it, but after I found out how much labor cost, I almost had a heart attack. I decided I'm going to figure it out myself (and the Internet :) ). So, I'm asking for your help guys! I bought a crate engine so I wouldn't have to do this stuff... so much for that theory. Can you guys offer me any advice in doing this? Are there things I need to check whileI have the engine apart or should I be okay to just replace the head gaskets and put everything back the way it was? The engine is a 350 (375 horse), alum. L-98 corvette heads, Q-Jet, alum. intake manifold. Are there any special precautions to take with the aluminum stuff? I know to use anti-seize on the threads for the alum. stuff. Is there anything else? Any advice on torque patterns for the intake manifold? Tom Sallee said to torque them down in a circle. I've never heard anyone else recommend this. What do you guys think? How should I go about cleaning the engine? It seems like I should have to run something through it initially to clean it to get the watery oil out. what's the best procedure for this? Can you offer any other tips? I should have sent this out sooner, since i"m going to get started on it again in the morning, but I didn't think about it until after I was done working on it today. I just worked on getting everything unbolted today. All i have left to do is a couple bolts on the intake and a couple of header bolts, then I'm ready to start taking the roller rockers off, etc. Thanks for any advice! Thanks! I'm working the website right now. I just have to find a way to make it a Secret link from my primary web page. See, the story goes something like this: My Dad had a '69 SS when I was about 3. He ended up selling it (regrets it to this day.) Since I'm in the military, he hasn't had the chance to see mine yet. I'm keeping it a surprise for when he comes up to Alaska to visit next summer. I'm gonna toss him the keys and tell him to go out to the garage and take her for a spin. Obviously Larry has an opinion. I've received it three times in my email-box. Do you people talk at all about Chevelles here? I've posted a question twice today with no response. I joined this list to talk about Chevelles, not other people. Lets try this one again... I have a 72 Chevelle that I recently purchased a grill for through ebay. It has some blemishes in the black grill. The seller tells me these won't show when its painted. I didn't think it was supposed to be painted?...anyone know? Also, I want to install the control arm dust covers onto the steel wheel wells with the staples provided. Surely there isn't a staple gun for this. Do I pilot drill each staple?

This is one of the few mail lists that DO stay on subject and not wander too far. I can't talk for the others, but Diane, I have not received any emails from you anytime today as I don't empty my mailbox till the end of the day. It's safe to say the mail here on Chevelle list is not fool proof. I must also say, I am not an expert on 72's but, as far as I remember, they don't paint their grills whether SS or not. And... I don't know how you would install dust covers with staples, unless it's to the original covers?..? The repro 72 grills come black. They dont need to be painted. I think the move on the staples is shove them in and then bend them down with a pliers. I'm not sure though. I did not see your question either. John Nasta
Re: [Chevelle-list] Re:I wish you the best on your CAR, BUT.
Diane, With the dust covers you will have to drill each hole and place them and bend them by hand. They are a bear to bend also. A trick I was taught by Gilbert Propes (restoration guru) is to use picture frame wire from a hobby shop. It bends much easier and will stay put just fine. Trooper P. S. Hello and Thanks for getting back to me, Yes, twice. probably more than that because I don't think I sent it off right the first time, and I think I've tried reposting it all in all three or four times today. Sarcasm? I'll happily apologize for sounding off earlier, I never saw the original email that ticked off Sarge, but I wasn't being sarcastic. I am serious when I say I joined this forum to talk about Chevelles. Maybe I'm missing something, is there a web page with all these questions and answers? or is it just emails in our mailboxes? I only know I got three very nasty remarks to someone who obviously said something to Sarge or Larry that got them upset. I don't have anything here set on auto delete. And I'm getting these posts by the bunches. But I do feel like I missed something. Albeit I did just join this group. Anyway, I thank you for replying. I'm sure someone must know about these steel fender well staples, I tried a chevy dealership with no luck. I'm pretty sure any 69-72 Chevelle would have these dust covers over the control arms. I have an assembly manual here with pictures of the staples and their placement, It just doesn't say how to go about stapling them on. Its my best guess to pilot drill the holes for the staples. I really have to find out about the grill. I won it on ebay and it looks like someone spilled something on it. If I can paint it S.G.black and its okay for show, then all is well. If not, it goes back... If someone would send me a link to this website I'd appreciate it, I must have gone through 20 Chevelle webpages looking for some answers before I found this forum. Its been frustrating trying to get an answer to these two questions. I can't put the front end back together until I get these Staples in. I wouldn't want to attempt it when the fenders are on the car. Thanks for everyone's input and help. I've been building this Chevelle for many years with the help of my friend. I hope to post pictures after we get it painted. The motor is a 400 SB, bored 30 over with a 270H comp cam, 9.5-1 diamandtop pistons, TRW stainless 2.02 and 1.60 Valves. My favorite pastime is letting BMW's and caddy's think they might overtake me and then I just walk away from them. Its so fun to watch their expressions when they realize they can't keep up with my primer gray beast. Sometimes I think I should paint it F-16 silver because it flies so fast. Thanks for reading! I believe there is a trim removing tool that will make this easier. It somehow goes up under the trim and pulls it loose from the clip that is holding it. RE: [Chevelle-List] Advance curve adjustment
Hi Tom, I noticed there haven't been any replies to your question Is vacuum advance really necessary in a modified engine? so I'm going to make an attempt... For a street driven vehicle, yes the vacuum advance is necessary as well as the centrifugal advance. Why? Because in a street driven vehicle, the engine is placed under constantly varying loads. During most normal driving speeds, the engine rpm isn't high enough for the centrifugal advance to increase the timing when needed so the timing is advanced/retarded based on the vacuum signal from the engine, depending of course on the load at the time (high load = low vacuum, low load = high vacuum). Of course at higher rpm when there isn't much vacuum signal the centrifugal advance takes over. On a race only engine where peak power and performance is achieved in a very narrow rpm band, vacuum advance isn't needed bacause the centrifugal advance puts the timing at a specified postition within a small rpm window. I'm sure I oversimplified it but hopefully it will help you understand it better. Herb Lumpp http://users.adelphia.net/~hlump/ -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Tom Tomlinson Sent: Thursday, July 17, 2003 11:24 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Chevelle-List] Advance curve adjustment I've been reading up on how to change the advance curve on my 71 350 Malibu with stock distrubutor. I'm planning to replace the points with a Mallory unit, and I thought I would also play with the weights and springs to see if I can improve the performance, but I have a couple of questions. I've measured the current advance curve using tape to degree the balancer and my timing light. Total vacuum advance is 13 deg, and total mechanical advance is 10 deg, and it is all engaged (23 deg total) by about 2800 rpm. I've read that the optimum total timing advance is about 36 deg on a SBC, so that is where the timing is currently set at 3000 rpm. Timing at idle works out to be about 13 deg (BTDC). My question is, is vacuum advance really necessary in a modified engine? From what I've read, the vacuum advance is designed advanced the timing between 1000 and 3000 rpm, but retard the advance when you go to WOT to compensate for a leaner mixture. But on a properly tuned carb (I'm currently using an Edelbrock 1405 with vacuum advance on the ported opening), the mixture doesn't go lean, in fact, it goes rich. A rich mixture takes longer to burn, so timing should stay advanced. With the current setup, at WOT the vacuum will go away, so the timing advance will be 13 degrees retarded, for a total advance of 36-13=23 deg, not the optimum 36 deg. Would I be better off to remove the vacuum advance and adjust the mechanical advance to provide the total advanced from 13 deg (idle) to 36 deg (3000 rpm)? Hope this makes sense. John; Sarge said to check with you about new Chevelle grills. Do you sell them? How much are they? These blemishes are pretty small, I am being picky, because I want to take this Chevelle to Shows. RE: [Chevelle-list] Tire size ?
When you are talking about 15s and 17s, that refers to the wheels rather than the tires. You can presumably have a 17 inch wheel with a low-profile tire that doesn't take up any more space than a 14 inch wheel with a higher profile tire. RE: [Chevelle-List] Advance curve adjustment
Thanks Herb! Actually, I finally found enough other info on the web to confirm what you explained. Also, Chuck went through the distributor upgrade/curve adjustment on last week's HP TV which helped as well. What was not totally clear from the first few references I found was how to set the total advance. I read that the optimum total advance is around 36-38 degrees, in by ~2500 rpm. So I went ahead and set my total advance to 36 degrees, with both the vacuum and mechanical advance in place. The problem is, I am getting 13 degrees of advance from the vacuum, and only 10 degrees from the mechanical system. So at WOT, the total advance is only 23 degrees (no vacuum). What I now understand is that the total advance should be 36-38 degrees with the mechanical only. The vacuum advance should add another 13-17 degrees above the 36-38 degrees, for a total of 50-55 advance under light load. I was just surprised to find that the engine could take that much advance. Apparently, this can significantly increase mileage. Of course, one should backoff the advance if detonation occurs. Diane, Yes you have to because you will then be putting the staple through the predrilled hole in the dust shield (I've never tried to press the staples through the thick rubber W/O a predrilled hole. ) then the inner finder and bend them over with pliers on the inner fender side. The only two I've done had new dust shields and new inner fenders so they both needed drilled. I just placed the shield where I wanted it and drilled both at the same time. With holes already in your inner fenders I would advise have a second person hold the shield where you want it the drilling from the inner fender side into the engine compartment using the fender well holes as a guide. Was there a website that goes with these emails, or is it just a list of Chevelle owners who get to chat? I can't thank you enough for the instant responses. I hope to have pictures later this year to show off my ride. I too wouldn't mind checking out Sarge's car. I'll bet his dad is really gonna flip when he sees it in the garage! Goodnight all! :-Diane ___ Chevelle-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://chevelles.net/mailman/listinfo/chevelle-list_chevelles.net
[Chevelle-list] Trans cooler
Title: Trans cooler I spoke with a guy tonight about building a 200-4R and he said something that kind of surprised me. Even if you run an auxiliary trans cooler, you should still run through the radiator connections as this helps to warm up the trans fluid to help the seals. If you start anew on a cool day (60º was his example), it takes the trans too long to warm up via just the auxiliary cooler. Anyone hear of something like this? What should minimum trans temp be? I think 200º is on the high end, but what's low and what's optimum? I'm getting antsy to swap my M20 4-speed setup for a 200-4R but don't have a trans cooler in the radiator. I bought a BM 24,000 GVW Super Cooler unit and now I'm told it won't warm up the trans fast enough? He also said that the O/D won't improve mileage to any degree. Somehow I think reducing RPM's from 3000 or so at 75/80 to 2000 or so has to improve mileage - am I wrong here? Currently I'm running 2100 at 55mph. I find it hard to believe that I'm not using more fuel at 3000 RPM (75/80 MPH) than I am at 2100 (55 MPH). With the O/D, I can run the same 75/80 MPH at my current 55 MPH RPMs. Dale McIntosh TC Gold #92/ACES #1709/NECOA #41 67SS/67 Elky Dales Place My 67 SS and 67 El Camino ChevelleStuff Decoding info on 64-72 Chevelles Team 67 1967 Chevelle/El Camino Specific Midwest Chevelles Midwest Chevelle Show Information
RE: [Chevelle-list] Tire size ?
OK guys, I'm asking about tire size on original SS wheels. How big of a tire will fit on them? Thanks, Mark ___ Chevelle-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://chevelles.net/mailman/listinfo/chevelle-list_chevelles.net
