Multipoint frame-relay interfaces are by default "Non Broadcast" in nature -
as a result you will not be able to ping your own interface. Add a seperate
map statement for your own interface and things will be fine !!

Question about fast switching and layer 3 switching [7:13941]

2001-07-27 Thread dovelet

Hi all,

I have a question and I hope someone can help me. As I know, Cisco router
support several switching method, e.g. process switching, fast switching
etc. In some document, it state that fast switching is when the 1st packet
goes into a router, it will go through the routing process, the other
packets with the same source and destination address will go through the
switching process. As I know, the layer 3 switching router is doing the same
job. Then, what is the different between a layer3 switching router and a
router in fast switching?

Regards,
dovelet

RE: Question about fast switching and layer 3 switchin [7:13941]

2001-07-27 Thread C King

Fast switching requires that each L2 frame be sent from the host, through
the L2 switch, and then inbound on the routers' interface (where it then
gets switched to the outbound interface - usually another VLAN in the same
L2 switch). Every frame is sent to the router, rewritten, and then forwarded.

L3 switching allows the switch to do the work. The router (usually a RSM
blade in a Catalyst) and switch to communicate as a team (MLS). The first
frame is sent to the switch, then the router/RSM (where it gets routed to
another local VLAN), and then out the switch to the destination. Each
subsequent frame is L3 switched by the switch from it's MLS cache (going
directly from the source's switch port to the destination's switch port,
with the frame being rewritten as if it had been processed by the router),
bypassing the router altogether. Hence L3 switching is much faster
(wire-speed).

Hope this helps.

DHCP and cisco catalyst [7:13949]

2001-07-27 Thread Andre Iswanto

I configured 4 VLAN on my catalyst 4000, 100 is Management's VLAN, 2,3,4 are
user's VLAN. Every user VLAN will receive ip address and gateway address
from DHCP server. But I have a problem with user use NT workstation, they
receive ip address but couldn't receive gateway address. This is working
fine on Windows 9x. I have tried to check on microsoft website, they have
explained this thing happen on NT and how to solve it is put the NT on same
subnet as DHCP server.
I was wondering any other way to solve this problem instead of put NT on
same subnet as DHCP server, anything to do with configuration on Catalyst
4000 ?

Best Regards,

Andre Iswanto.

Hi,

I wouldn't rate it good.
Probably you would want to use it to just to warm-up the topics
but not further. The book doesn't go into any details nor does it cover
the materials in the exam.
All the other books mentioned are far better than the Sybex, specially
Caslow's BRS for CCIE.

Good luck.

Normally I would just hit the "delete" key. Being a Networker implies the
ability to solve problems. That often entails searching for information. You
show no indication that you made the slightest effort to answer your
questions. Why should we?
Try www.cisco.com, www.itprc.com, www.google.com
Yes, it may take days of searching. You will be the stronger and better for
it. Good luck in your studies.

Re: Question about fast switching and layer 3 switching [7:13962]

2001-07-27 Thread Stephen Skinner

Hi,

what you said is almost correct ...

Proccess/Fast/Distributed/Packet switching are all layer 2 functions..

>From the CCO

Fast switching allows higher throughput by switching a packet using a cache
created by the initial packet sent to a particular destination.
"this is all done at layer 2"

Destination addresses are stored in the high-speed (switching)cache to
expedite forwarding. Routers offer better packet-transfer performance when
fast switching is enabled. Fast switching is enabled by default on all
interfaces that support fast switching.

layer 3 switching differs from this by having the first packet sent to the
router (which routes the packet to the correct outgoing port ..this is a
more efficent way of finding destinations than switching ,...switching
envolves looking at a singular table or flooding -leaveing out CEF on
purpose-)
it then stores this info in the cache and all following/Same destination
packets are switched using info in the cache...

i have read somewhere that is 4-9 times faster to switch a packet than to
route one so this gives us an increase in throughput via "intelligent
switching"-my own term

please don`t quote me on the 4-9 times bit ...but it IS defenatly faster to
switch ..

HTH

When I first read through the guide I thought it was not in-depth enough
but it seemed to cover most of the topics. After taking the exam, I
would judge the book a little better. You still need to read of *lot*
of other material, but this book would be a good supplement to your
studies.

RE: Problems with AIM compression on 3660/2600 [7:13742]

2001-07-27 Thread Bob Johnson

(I'm resending due to the trouble the list server had yesterday)

Check out bug id# CSCdm69595
There are several others but they don't show up on CCO (Cisco keeps some
bugs private)
Essentially hw compression mungs up multicast data on 2600/3600 serial
interfaces. They say it was fixed in latter releases of 12.07 so you may
want to try one of the 12.1 images...
A few other multicast issues I've learned the hard way...

Early versions of the 2621 router will not pass multicast traffic through
the on board ethernet interfaces (Bug ID CSCdm38511 ) Only fix is a router
swap. My office looked like a warehouse for a while we were shipping so many
2621s back to Cisco

Multicast fast switching (ip mroute-cache) doesn not yet work with hardware
compression (Bug ID CSCdt82560) This has not been fixed as of 12.2x. So if
you are tring to save CPU by hardware compressing the multicast data you
lose CPU by not being able to fast switch.

I recall at least one 30 hour marathon with TAC hopping from various TAC
centers worldwide. As far as I recall the 2621 hardware issue was already
known at Cisco but the problem with hardware compression (both the munging
of data and the fast switching issue) were only discovered when a customer
(unfortunately me) tried to do it.

RE: when 25 booting, the message is repeat again and a [7:13983]

2001-07-27 Thread Farhan Ahmed

may be, this problem occurs if you have just replaced your system EPROMs.

 1 Power down the system.

2 Inspect each EPROM. Make sure each EPROM is correctly positioned in the
socket (with notches properly aligned) in the correct socket.

3 If a pin is bent, straighten it carefully. Reinstall the EPROM and power
up the system. If a pin breaks off, the EPROM must be replaced.

4 If an EPROM has been installed backward and power has been applied to it,
the EPROM has been damaged and must be replaced.

RE: Question about fast switching and layer 3 switchin [7:13984]

2001-07-27 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

The original question was the difference between fast switching and L3
switching.

The term "L3 switching" gets used in a variety of ways, but using the
definition described by CK, think of L3 switching as the next-generation of
fast-switching. Historically, that would be an accurate description of
development at Cisco. Conceptually L3 switching and fast switching are
similar. The new MLS RSM L3 technology was developed by Cisco based on
technology already in use for fast switching. Fast switching happens in the
router. With MLS, the switching job is distributed and the RSM takes over
some of the work.

Re: Is ppp authentication must [7:13944]

2001-07-27 Thread John Neiberger

Yes, you can connect using PPP without authentication, which makes
perfect sense if you're using it for point-to-point dedicated links.
For DDR, do you want just anyone to be able to dial in and connect to
your network? Nope! So, for DDR, why not use the authentication? CHAP
is pretty effective for basic authentication in DDR networks.

IBM printer question [7:13992]

2001-07-27 Thread Sites, Bob

Question for all you IBM printer gurus. I have the following small office
connected to my hospital.

HOSPITAL-AIRONET340OFFICE-AIRONET340---C1924IBM AFP
Printer.

Here is the problem. After about 15-30 minutes the printer is no longer
visible or pingable from the network. It seems to time out from the switch
connection. If I log into the switch and ping this printer it comes back up
and is then visible on the network again, until it times out? Any known
conflicts with the C1900's or the Aironets and this particular printer?
Anyone know of any timeout parameter changes that might take care of this?
There isn't a whole lot of commands on the 1900 to use.

Re: Is Sybex CCIE study guide good? [7:13951]

2001-07-27 Thread John Neiberger

I used the practice exams from CertificationZone, along with most of
their study guides, especially the Token Ring, Bridging, and routing
guides. I found that the questions on that site were far more difficult
than the actual exam, so if you find yourself consistently passing
those, you should do fine on the real thing.

Good luck!

RE: IBM printer question [7:13992]

2001-07-27 Thread Thomas Crowe

You might want to check is the port is going into "errordisable" mode.
Usually when this happens, the switch is either set to or detecting
full-duplex, when in fact the printer is only working in half-duplex. That
could explain the reset when you log into the switch. I have seen this A
LOT with HP printers and Catalyst switches.

Subject: IBM printer question [7:13992]

EIGRP question [7:13995]

2001-07-27 Thread Scott Rolf

Got a big of a head scratcher here...Migrating from RIPv2 to EIGRP. Added
an EIGRP process to all routers with a custom distance of 150 (greater then
RIP). The idea is EIGRP should converge and we should be able to see all
the routes in the topology table. Then, when we feel comfortable that all
routes exist in the topology table we can remove RIP piece by piece until
RIP is gone. Then drop EIGRP distance back down to normal. Well, we
brought up EIGRP and some of the remote routes show up in our central router
with "FD is Inaccessible". Anybody know what that means? The routes have a
FD at the router that is directly connected to the network in question and
the appropriate network command exists

I just finished the Caslow book and it was very good. I'm right in the
middle of Routing TCP/IP by Jeff Doyle and so far it is the best book I've
read. I have the Sybex book also and have put it down for the time being and
concentrating on the Doyle and Halabi books. Then I will go and read the

When I first read through the guide I thought it was not

I agree. You cannot go wrong with Halabi and DoyleCaslow is also very
good. The bottom line is that there is no one book that will do it all. You
will need to read a variety of books, each with it's own merits. I would
start with Doyle/Halabi first and then move on to books such as Caslows.

I totally agree. There is definitely no one book that will get you through

learning new things when picking up the CCIE level books so pickup whatever
you can get your hands on and don't believe these "all in one" CCIE books.

RE: IBM printer question [7:13992]

2001-07-27 Thread J. Li

This is related to the printer MAC address aged out of
the CAM table due to inactivity. We see a lot on our
servers. What we do is creating a ping script
(traffic) on the servers to ping the gateway. In your
case, you can do a continuous ping to the printer IP
from a workstation or server, say ping it very 3
minute or so.

RE: Is Sybex CCIE study guide good? [7:13951]

2001-07-27 Thread Wright, Jeremy

I have not yet completed my CCIE written so my advice may not be the best. I
can tell you what I have researched and found out though. Read all the books
you can. Do all of the questions, configuration exercises, troubleshooting,
etc.. in the books. Then I have been told (once again, I have not yet
experienced) the Boson tests are pretty good along with certification zones
test simulator. Also, find the Rossi paper on all the types of bridging.
This is all I have to offer at this point and I plan on doing more to
prepare for the written. Could someone else please add on to what I have
listed if willing? Thanks.

Boson #1, 2, 3 were really good.
Sometimes the questions are much harder than the real test.
Also make sure you study for the explanation part of the answer.
They cost like 29.99 each but they worth every penny.

I believe it refers to which image to boot from.
I believe you can set this environment variable for it to read
and then KNOW which image you want it to boot by default.

boot system
boot tftp
etc...

Does anyone know what the following statement means? Notice it when I did a

reload on a Cisco 7500.

AUTOBOOTVAR (BOOT) env variable isn't set. Please set it to point to a
non null string. Attempting to load the first image in disk0 or slot0.

Any takers?

Re: A PING - Connectivity Issue [7:13873]

2001-07-27 Thread Patricia Leeb-Hart

Ray,

I'm not sure what you mean when you state that if "done that with a PC the
interface would not work"...Let's take it to mean that you would try to ping
an address assigned to PC's network interface. Depends on what the
"interface" is comprised of. E.g, Windows 9x, NT and 2k and Linux (hey,
it's a PC operating system too! ) all allow you to create a hosts file and
of course you always have the loopback and, if you're not using DHCP, the
local host addresses. So if you've loaded a TCP/IP stack you can always
ping those addresses. The fact that they're not physical interfaces or
connected to one don't matter beans to IP (Layer 3, remember?), that's not
for it to know or care about. Now, normally you'd have a NIC installed and
the host address assigned to that so you also have Layers 2 and 1
functionality, but they're _not necessary for a ping to happen_. See what
I'm driving at? I'm quite ignorant of Sun hardware, but I'll bet that le0
is a virtual interface (Solaris shells don't care about layer 1 either)
representing some physical interface that may or may not be hooked up to an
actual transmission medium. The fact is that an interface (physical or
virtual) is configured with an address and it's active is enough for PING.

RE: when 25 booting, the message is repeat again and a [7:14010]

2001-07-27 Thread Daniel Cotts

I'll take a guess and say that it appears that the router can't find an IOS
image to run. I'll further guess (unless corrected) that it appears that you
have the bootstrap image so most likely have the router(boot) code.
Can I assume that you have never seen this router run? That it was in this
condition when you received it?
You might want to verify that there is Flash memory installed and that there
is an image on it. Think that you'll have to boot to router(boot)> to look
around. Might want to physically reseat the Flash stick.

Yeah... very similar to BSCN except the addition of IS-IS. ALOT of
IS-IS!!! Read the chapter in Doyle's TCP/IP Vol 1 and then the white
papers. If you've done BSCN, you should be able to simply revisit
OSPF/EIGRP/BGP and be up to speed.

Sucks to have to wait 4 months to see of you passed.. (well, up to 3
months AFTER the exam closes)

access lists [7:13928]

2001-07-27 Thread Joe Morabito

How can you apply an access list to a serial interface to block all internet
traffic without disabling the inside people from getting out?

I have a 1720 with the serial deny ip any any and the ethernet uses an
inside
addressing scheme with nat to get to the outside.

But when I apply the deny ip any any and access-group xxx in to the serial
interface, people can no longer get outside. Any ideas?

ISDN,multy channels bundle [7:13943]

Hi,all

cisco 2610, 3 BRIs, I use it to connect to Internet.
I configure the interfaces like this,

Interface BRI1/0
 no ip address
 ip nat outside
 encapsulation ppp
 dialer rotary-group 0

Interface BRI1/1
 no ip address
 ip nat outside
 encapsulation ppp
 dialer rotary-group 0

Interface BRI1/2
 no ip address
 ip nat outside
 encapsulation ppp
 dialer rotary-group 0

Interface Dialer0
 ip address negotiated
 ip nat outside
 encapsulation ppp
 dialer in-band
 dialer idle-timeout 180
 dialer string xxx
 dialer load-threshold 1 either
 dialer-group 1
 ppp authentication pap callin
ppp pap sent-username xxx password xxx

It will bring up all 6 B-channels,and I can connect to Internet via it.
But it seems only 1 channel is used because I found that the speed of the
ftp task cannot exceed 64K bits/second.

Thinking the B-channels should be bundled up, I use "ppp multilink" for
Interface Dialer0 (right?). The B-channels can still be brought up, but
the PCs inside the E0/0 cannot connect to outside then.

Anyone can help me?
Thanks in advance.

Memory upgrade [7:14015]

2001-07-27 Thread Adrian Nixon

Hello,
I have a 4000M+ in my home lab that I would like to give a main memory
upgrade. Aside from voiding the warranty on my router, is there any reason
that I should avoid buying a standard 32 meg SIMM for $35 instead of the
standard Cisco part which costs anywhere from $80-$200? I checked the specs
of the 8 meg Samsung part that my router came with and it seems to be a
plain old 5v, 72 pin, 70ns, parity SIMM.
I searched the archives and Google, but could not find any relevant
info. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time,

Re: QUERY ON FRAME RELAY, Can't ping to it's own i [7:13877]

2001-07-27 Thread Gary Clevenger

You will need to have connectivity end to end across the pvc. Even a local
ping will traverse the WAN (actually 4 times), so your remote router will
also need to be mapped correctly.

Re: QUERY ON FRAME RELAY, Can't ping to it's own i [7:13877]

2001-07-27 Thread Gary Clevenger

Actually, I thought about it again, and I am not sure you will be able to
ping your own interface on a multipoint interface due to the fact that the
ping must transverse the WAN and it must know which pvc to route across.
This poses a problem when there are multiple pvcs and your local ip is
assigned to all of them.

RE: classless routing [7:13847]

It would follow the default route. This is because it is not a match for
either of the other two routes. If IP Classless were not turned on, the
packet would be dropped.

RE: traceroute [7:13724]

2001-07-27 Thread Gary Clevenger

Traceroute is simply a special ping with Time To Live (TTL) set beginning at
1. The first router that recieves the packet will expire TTL and send an
ICMP error back to the transmitting router. The transmitting router is
expecting this error and will log the IP address of the router sending the
error. The transmitting router will then set TTL to 2 on the next "ping"
and wait for that ICMP error to return. This continues until the "Target"
of the trace replies.

RE: FrameRelay Over Utilized [7:13349]

2001-07-27 Thread Gary Clevenger

This is a telco problem. Overutilization will not cause CRC's. Your
interface resets are being caused by missing/corrupted LMI packets. I would
be concerned about the high CRC errors for starters. You could also look at
show frame lmi and see how quickly you seem to be loosing LMI packets. The
interface will come down if you loose more than 3 consecutive lmi packets.

Passed CID second attempt - some comments: [7:14027]

2001-07-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Passed CID today, this was my second attempt and the only test in the long
journey in acquiring my CCNP and now CCDP, which I had to take more than one
time. I will have to agree with many that this test has vague questions,
and
many of the TRIVIA type, such as which version of the IOS implemented this
or
that feature.

I had just taken Global Knowledge's classroom CID training weeklong class
and
though that I could take the test the following week. I ordered a Boson
test
for a quick review and only had a couple of days to use it. A day after
taking the test and failing I received an email from Bernard, the author of
the test warning about the difficulty of the exam, unfortunately a day late
and $100 shot for me!

I doubt that second test included 20 per cent of the questions that I was
presented with on the first test. However, I now had reread the Sybex CCDP
study guide, and reviewed the areas that I was previously weak in: SNA and
Desktop protocols. I also read the good book by Priscilla Oppenheimer on
network design; however, this was relevant to real-world design, the test I
took was from another world I think!!

Used the above mentioned items for study as well as several months of
lurking
around here on groupstudy.

Will take a week break and then on to concentrated study of the CCIE
material
in pursuit of my ultimate goal.

Note * What others have said and I experienced this is a difficult test! It
humbled this old man - but ultimately success, study hard for this one and
you to can pass it.

Thanks to ALL in the group for sharing your thoughts and questions.

Possibly Oldest CCNP/ and now CCDP on the study list

Ray

Re: access lists [7:13928]

2001-07-27 Thread Santosh Koshy

Joe,

If you are implying that you dont want users / hackers /
crackers from outside your company getting access to your internal network ,
then here is what u need 2 do...

create an extended access list with an established setting pointing
inwards... and deny everything else. that should do the trick.

RE: QUERY ON FRAME RELAY, Can't ping to it's own i [7:13875]

2001-07-27 Thread Arthur Simplina

I am not an expert in frame relay but let me share my experience in the
classroom lab where we did this exercise on frame relay.

I have the same situation where from the local router I can't ping the
interface that is connected to the frame relay. I also cannot ping the
ethernet ip address of another router in the other frame relay connection.

I was asked that question why I can't ping the local interface with the
frame relay connection. I can't seem to find an answer but managed to say
that since the "ping command" is on the layer 3 and the serial interface in
encapsulated in frame relay (which is layer 2), so the ping command fails as
it cannot locate the layer 3 ip address of the serial interface that is
mapped to the dlci which is layer 2. I hope that it makes sense and you got
my point.

As to why I cannot ping the ethernet ip address of the other router, the
reason is that the ping source ip address carries the serial interface ip
address that is inversed mapped to the frame relay connection which it
cannot locate and that is why it fails. But if I do an extended ping
specifying the source ip address of the ethernet of the local router, the
ping is successful which means that I have a full connectivity across the
frame relay cloud to the other LAN segments of the other routers.

Perhaps, a frame relay expert could clarify this further.

Cheers,

Art S.

Re: CCIE lab classroom study? [7:14028]

2001-07-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yes, I think this might be the instructor(s) that might conduct the
training.
The classes would be here in CA. As my present position does not allow me
the opportunity to have any in production hands-on training I am looking for
this mentor lead classroom format.

I am also trying to assemble some equipment here at work for a lab as a
prerequisite to the intensive classroom training.

Thanks for the input.

One question for the group: has anyone taken any of the Global Knowledge
Advanced CCIE Preparation Courses (ACPC 1,2, and 3)? I am considering
taking
them in prep for the CCIE lab certification.

Just passed CCDP and planning my attack plan for CCIE

Thanks, for the encouragement - this Old man, will be 60 in October, needs
it
however, am sure enjoying the journey.

Had hit a glass ceiling at work here and seemed like the Network
Certification, especially the CCIE, was a ticket to advancement and surely
an
asset if one was to wind up out on the street.

Thanks, ALL and back to the books in a week!

Regarding oldest CCNP/CCDP a fellow whom I think is named William Gragido
has been making that claim. I believe that he is 56.
Congratulations on your achievement. Good luck on your quest for the CCIE

2001-07-27 Thread william gannon

-Such is true, and from what I can tell you both are right. In my
experience, a Win box will not respond to a ping if there is not layer1
connectivity, while a Solaris box will. Why?.. I don't know. Solaris seems
to
associate the interface with a name first and then with an IP, while Win is
the other way around. Any protocol gurus there??, Priscilla, any input??
(aside: I read your book to pass my CCDA two years ago, still one of my
favorites. I've got a crush on you don't ever change I will be your groupie
if you want one xoxoxo) plus you are one of
the best contributors to this list! I don't agree that the OS does not care
about layer1, if you don't have a link on a windoze box, you will NOT be
able to ping it locally NO HOW NO WAY see. Hmm... alright how many CCNA's
does it take to change an IP address on a PC?

Ten, one to do it and nine to bitch that it is not their a job, a MCSE
should handle it. Long live the acronyms.

Re: access lists [7:13928]

2001-07-27 Thread Marc Russell

I would use something like the access-list below and apply it inbound to
your serial interface. Replace the 210.145.3.128 0.0.0.63 with your subnet.
It might be a good idea to log the deny packets to a syslog server.

access-list 101 deny ip 10.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 any log
access-list 101 deny ip 172.0.0.0 0.127.255.255 any log
access-list 101 deny ip 192.168.0.0 0.0.255.255 any log
access-list 101 permit tcp any 210.145.3.128 0.0.0.63 established
access-list 101 permit udp any 210.145.3.128 0.0.0.63 gt 1023
access-list 101 permit icmp any 210.145.3.128 0.0.0.63 host-unreachable
access-list 101 permit icmp any 210.145.3.128 0.0.0.63 port-unreachable
access-list 101 permit icmp any 210.145.3.128 0.0.0.63 packet-too-big
access-list 101 permit icmp any 210.145.3.128 0.0.0.63
administratively-prohibited
access-list 101 permit icmp any 210.145.3.128 0.0.0.63 source-quench
access-list 101 permit icmp any 210.145.3.128 0.0.0.63 ttl-exceeded
access-list 101 deny ip any any log
