[Cooker] Fresh install
Hello, Well, my cooker laptop decided to keel over due to a bad case of code-rot. Seems something I updated gave it indigestion... sooo.. I backed up everything important, and bombed the thing and did a cooker clean install. The install went pretty smoothly. There are a couple things that are still buggy, though. Seems that both the current kernel and the boot kernel have problems setting the video mode (ie, vga=791 in my case). Booting the vgahi image didn't help. Oddly enough, if I go either into Windows first, or into the BIOS setup screen, it then will set the mode correctly. Maybe an initialization problem? I installed the latest kernel, as well as the latest tmb kernel. The tmb one will boot, the stock one won't.. i'll e-mail a specific error message tomorrow when I'm more awake and can write it down. Odd thing, with the stock KDE installed, which includes Konqueror I would think, there's no entry in the menu for browse the web or for launching Konqueror as a browser. Is this normal? Sound worked OK until I loaded my backup desktop files, then it started with the soundserver error boxes about not being able to set real-time priority and running soundwrapper. Wonder what I broke? If installing KDE, and installing on a machine with a sound card, shouldn't kmix install by default? Default install has no workable mixer, had to find and individually select the package separately. More info in the AM... time for bed. V.

[Cooker] Fresh install 9.2 - No kde screensavers
kdeartwork is installed yet no screensavers in kcontrol > screen saver. I have a fairly new cooker install on another partition and they are present there. This is the basic download edition made available today. is this a bug? anyone have any tricks up their sleeves to make them reappear? :) thanks, -srlinuxx

[Cooker] Fresh install, problems I ran into:)
I just did a fresh install of cooker work today, here's some of the bugs I ran into: * When switching to console and back to X you often have to "enable" the mouse again with the scroller * The installer installed both koffice-i18n-no-1.1.1-2mdk and koffice-i18n-no_NY-1.1.1-2mdk, when it should only have installed koffice-i18n-no-1.1.1-2mdk, and the names are incorrect? it should now be nb and nn instead of no and no_NY * Ran into some weird problem during partitioning, somehow there were'nt enough space for the partitions, so one of the partitions were'nt formatted? it was just a 30 MB ext2 partition.. and it did'nt give me any information about why in X but it did in console, it should've given this info in X * I was looking at the installation process in console and there showed up some error in there, did'nt have time to write it down, but it was something like "ERROR: DrakX should'nt have to clean up packaging shit. /tmp/gconf-2.4. Killing 1440" * By some reason it ran into some problems installing the openoffice.org-libs package, probably because of incomplete file or something, BUT it then suddenly jumped from 5 minutes remaining to 10 seconds when I choose to skip it and continue, so definitely something wrong there.. * The default images for users are plain ugly, nature pictures? bah, the cute penguins should show up first * WHY was the ability to jump back between stages during install removed? That was kinda annoying when I hit the next button instead of create user and wanted to go back and create it.. * framebuffer was working all fine in 1280x1024 during boot, but where's the bootsplash? has it been removed, or is this a bug? I really missed it... btw. kyro graphic card that's what I wrote down during install=) Regards, Per Øyvind:)

I was trying to do a textmode install in expert mode of mdk 9 on one of our servers here, when I ran into several problems; You can only choose US or US(International) keyboard (you could choose other keyboard layouts in 8.2) You cannot choose packages, when you are asked to choose packages you can only choose yes or no, same thing when installing updates at the end of the install (worked in 8.2) When doing graphical there's also a problem with using localespecific characters(or whatever the correct term might be) eg. RE: [Cooker] Fresh install - kernel panic - rescue fails also
From what I found lastnight in dealing w/ a similar issue. I had burned cooker 9.0 cd's off of a recent rsync the mkinitrd is messed up ... If you boot rescue then chroot your /mnt dir after the full install you'll noticed that there is no initrd in the /boot dir And I thought I could just boot chroot then do a nice -20 rpm -ivh --force kernel-2.4.21mdk.rpm and force the recreation of the initrd.img. This didn't' work and errored out on the script.. After looking into this more I found that the mkinitrd was what was bombing out. Something about it complainin on an awk statement on line 2 of the either mkinitrd script or the install-kernel script I'm not sure and I'm not willing to reinstall it @ the moment. ___ Brandon Grace Network Security Analyst TTUnet Network Operations Center Texas Tech University ___ ô¿ô Linux, Bringing The World To a Brave New Front THE RIGHT ONE -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, July 25, 2002 08:16 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Cooker] Fresh install - kernel panic - rescue fails also I simply booted the pcmcia.img disk - hit F1 and typed rescue (this had worked previously). If under the pcmcia.img you need reiserfs to start the rescue (e.g. if the Beta is on a reiserfs partition), that's true that reiserfs.o is missing. You need to boot on the isolinux enabled CDROM (e.g. first cdrom of Beta1) for having both pcmcia and reiserfs and "disk install" support. But under pcmcia.img I suppose you would not need reiserfs (e.g. your pcmcia is for net or cdrom most of the time) so it states reiserfs is missing when the rescue is booted? Is that true? I performed a fresh install today with latest Cooker on a notebook. Install went flawlessly - but after reboot - I get kernel panic. I tried with the same boot disk (pcmcia.img) to perform a rescue, but it states reiserfs is not in kernel! Thx, R.Fox
[Cooker] fresh install, /dev/cdrom?, grip and friends
Fresh Xmas install with no /dev adaptions by hand... (the second) Impressing your (non linux using) friends with grip ... but grip won't start :-( grip assumes a device /dev/cdrom - without it, there is no 'firsttime' grip. 1. The /dev/cdrom link to the real CD device is not established. 2. You must belong to the disk group to use this device Is it possible to establish the link by default, and make the device 'more readable'? The default user would enjoy it. Stefan.

[Cooker] fresh install: I chose grub, not LI
Hello, Yesterday (Dec 20) and the day before that (Dec 19) I installed a fresh Cooker. I used the network.img from ftp.surfnet.nl on a Celeron 500 / Abitt BP6. I had some issues with it on both installs. 1. I chose grub, not LI. 2. Packages missing. 3. Smp kernel? 4. Printer setup works (not). 5. Limited command line. 6. Security level. 7. Webmin started as default. 8. Some estethic ideas. 9. User ID? 10. Mounting partitions. 1. I chose grub, not LI. When setting up the bootloader I chose grub. After the reboot I was confronted with a nice looking LI. So I tried the bootfloppy, with no luck. It couldn't find the files. If I'm correct, the installer first runs lilo, and if grub is chosen, it runs grub after lilo. There wasn't an mkinitrd package installed, so I assume that's the reason it broke. The installer didn't give an error though, I had to look on a console to see it. 2. Packages missing. There were a lot of packages missing: glibc, glibc-devel, ldconfig, kernel-headers, mkinitrd, wget, binutils, libbinutils, Eterm, Enlightenment, libSDL_mixer1.2 and libSDL_net1.2. It also broke about halfway the install of XFree86-4.1.0-22mdk on both installs. I managed to install these packages from 8.1. Odd though, after installing XFree86-4.1.0-17mdk, the install of 22mdk did work out fine. 3. Smp kernel? I have an smp system, but an up kernel was installed. Is it somehow possible to detect this and let the installer install the smp kernel? 4. Printer setup works (not). I have an Epson Stylus 670 connected to the parport. The first install I had it turned off. I turned it on, and let the installer modprobe parport and parport_probe again. It recognized the printer. I chose cups, with it's recommended setup. Nice feature is that it installs the necessary packages when needed, my compliments :) I changed the papersize to A4, and the output to 720x720. I tried to print a testpage twice, but nothing happened. The second install, I chose the same setup, and only changed the papersize (to A4). This time the testpage was printed fine. 5. Limited command line. I had to install a few packages by hand on the second virtual console. I ran into a command line limit, I could only type a command up to 126 characters. So the command: rpm -Uvh -r /mnt ftp://ftp.surfnet.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Mandrake/Mandrake/8.1/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/glibc-2.2.4-16mdk.i586.rpm is hitting that limit. Why does it exist? And can it be changed? 6. Security level. When choosing the security level, it is default set to Low, and you have to set it to Medium or High yourself. I'd rather see it set to Medium as default, so when you just hit Enter, it won't hurt too much. 7. Webmin started as default. Another security issue. When selecting services to be On or Off at boot, Webmin is set On as default. I can't see Webmin and security going hand in hand. It would be better to have it set to Off as default. 8. Some estethic ideas. At package selection, there are a lot of graphics thrown on the screen. The icons for the different Groups are rather large, and they hardly fit on the screen. There's not even white space left between them. I don't know exactly what size these icons are (48x48 ?) but one step smaller (32x32 then) seems appropriate to me. Also, the Meta-Groups, like Workstation, Server and Graphical interface don't have icons, and they are a bit hidden between all the graphics. Underlining these Meta-Groups would make them more visible. During the installation of the packages, you get to see a progress bar. When hitting the Details button, you get a second progress bar. When hitting that button again, you go back to seeing the one progress bar. Still the button is called Details, while it would make more sense to call it No Details. 9. User ID? I somehow expected to be able to set a User ID for my user. There wasn't an option for it though. It can be quite handy to be able to access my nfs server as this user. Feature request: I'd like an option to set the User ID. 10. Mounting partitions. It wasn't clear to me after making the partitions, if I needed to mount them myself or not. I created a / and a /boot partition. I couldn't mount the /, but I did mount /boot at /boot. The installer later mounted / at /mnt. All the packages were installed in /mnt, so my /boot partition remained empty, and rebooting after my second install did not work out too, because it couldn't find the files at the /boot partition. I wouldn't know the best way to make this clear. Maybe it would be good to show a message in the partitioner, that it's not advised to mount partitions here. The installer will take care of it. Well, I hope that's enough :) -- Marcel Pol [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[Cooker] Fresh Install 15-sep 2:24
Hi, I just installed the latest Cooker and I am very impressed by the current state of the distribution. I didn't find any showstoppers, just a few minor things: - As mentioned in an earlier mail by someone else, it would be a lot more clear if the installation dialogs had a blinking cursor. - Control Center: During installation I did not select a printer. When clicking on printer in CC, it automatically starts installing files. In addition these files can not be found: printer_filters_1.0 printer_testpages printer_utils - CC: Any reason why userDrake is not part of CC? - During installation no SCSI was found (correct), but according to syslog it is still loading the SCSI module. Is this perhaps because I have a CD-writer? - Error in syslog: DrakX: ERROR: Insmod'ing module floppy failed: modules.pm line 552 - No idea if the following error is useful for you: Error in syslog: devfsd[52] error calling: "symlink" in "GLOBAL" - GnomeToaster comes up with a blank screen - What's the difference between MandrakeUpdate and Software Manager? Do we really need them both in the Packaging menu? - Kdbg, crags and qtdesigner only appear in the flat list in Softw.Man. Not in the tree view (at least not under Development) - Mandrake Doc and Howtos were both not working from the menu. Hope this helps, Thanks a lot, Manuel
[Cooker] Fresh install ... won't complete.
Not only is the config networking not working (and I tried all options in the 'recommended' mode install):i.e. gtk create_png:missing pngfile drakenet_step.png but I got an "error opening RPM database: cannot open Packages index using db3-Invalid argument(22)" as well as a premature eject-ulation from the install itself (at least it knew it wasn't done) and a failure to install printer. Of course, when rebooting, "can't mount root fs on 03:07. " -m-

as of 20:00 pst. It looks good so far the install is smoother. I can't explain it but the little things just work better, like my mouse. It's a logitech trackball wheel mouse that locked up the installer in 8.0 but now it sees it. Am I the only one who loves the new rpmdrake but is reminded of when the first one of this generation came around and had great new features, but was missing so many old ones? Am I the only one who gets sick of such a sensitive install program that if it tries to do the slightest little thing and the user is not on VT 7 at the moment it decides to crash? (there are ways to have x 'address' a specified terminal, and to have an installer that will stay loaded and in position if x crashes to attempt at least to restart x and come back to normal without a restart and startover.) Am I the only one who wants new (.10.99) evolution, new bonobo and conf, new libgal, new gtkhtml, and other new stuff that ximian and others have dished out but mdk has as of yet not put in cooker? (I tried out evolution .10.99 myself and find it a bit nicer than .10, and much more stable. it requires though the new packages like mentioned.) I had a number of other bugs, but such that i will find patches before I bring them up, as they may have a little to do with my setup. I say Am I the only one before all these because if i am, then it is obviously not worth worrying about, but if not, well... Can we see some more thorough correction of linux-mandrake name problems? [Cooker] Today's cooker fresh install :-((
Although yesterday's cooker installed after trying a 'recommended' install, my realtek 8139 card wasn't found. Today, the same install really ssllooowed down @linuxconf, and during configure networking, after I chose cable modem, it said "no ethernet network adapter has been detected on your system. I cannot setup this connection type." Last week it at least recognized the card. Anyway, then it was Kernel panic unable to mount root fs on 21:05. Am I the only guy with an A7V133 ASUS board and the above network card? -- -m-

Cause that was the solution provided here for solving this (see http://www.mail-archive.com/cooker@linux-mandrake.com/msg23657.html). Althoug using glibc-2.2-21mdk, i had problem locals both during install and afterthere (glibc warnings perl warnings). [Cooker] cooker fresh install impression
I used the kernel too old pretext to make a fresh install of cooker. Here are some impressions: - irritating problem with locales (not missing accentued characters, but flood of warning messages in background). Can't you use the /usr/share/locale symlink trick to fix this ? - additionals language to choose are not additionals, as no one is initially selected :-), not even the current installation language - corresponding locales rpm for chosen language are not automatically installed, whereas it was the case in older mandrake - expert installation should not have all package groups selected by default to install at first rpm choice screen: it's a pain to unselect all manually - rpm are installed by pack of eight, but should one only fails, all following in the same group also fails, and there isn't any option to try again just for the group (either continue or retry everything). - what's the use of proxy in install ? There's isn't anything kept thereafter. It should at least set http_proxy env variable in /etc/profile. And entry should be clearer: no need for protocol prefix (http://) and distinct port text box. - mouse init seems to be a lot chaotic : sometimes it works, sometimes not. Maybe a warning message as "if your lose your mouse, use tab to select cancel button and try again" would be useful for newbies. Everything else seems to be OK... -- Guillaume Rousse Murphy's law : If anything can go wrong, it will. O'Tool's commentary : Murphy was an optimist.
[Cooker] Fresh Install of 7.1b
Greeting's, I have just completed a fresh install on a brand new machine for a client and I must say all went Very Well. My client was very impressed with the speed of the install and was very pleased with the addition of the Crypto Packages. I also installed for him the latest 128 bit version of netscape I could find at the mirrors as well as mozilla-fonts and he was pleased with the difference in the appearence of the netscape browser. I only noticed one small thing when the system was booting up that I thought to be peculiar. This client is using a ZOOM 56k dualmode modem from his office and initiates the ppp connection at boot. The modem seems to dial rather slow allthough the S register S111=155 and as a result in the bootup screen init says failed to initialize ppp, however by the time login is completed the connection is there and the interface ppp0 is configured. I was looking in the scripts to determine what I might be able to change to have the boot proces wait until ppp initialization is complete before continuing to avoid this failed message and can't seem to find an good approach to use. Possibly someone either from Mandrake or the list could offer a suggestion as to what I might try. I also noticed that the sendmail daemon also does not start at boot even though it is enabled in setup. I added an additional call in rc.local /etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail start and that seems to get the daemon started at that point.. Great Job and congrat's to all the Mandrake developers! Hi, I am trying a fresh network install with the current cooker (the first screen is really cool!), but the dhcp request does not receive the answer. I know the dhcp server since everyone uses it.
