Bug#342152: harden-doc: typo in section 4.10.9.2: "make sure you that"

2005-12-05 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: harden-doc
Version: 3.2.4
Severity: minor

Hello!

I think I found a little typo in section 4.10.9.2 _Using the
shell history file_:

"make sure you that all users are using a shell that supports this"

s/sure you/sure/

Is that right?

Bug#342695: eclipse: debian/copyright file doesn't seem to be accurate anymore

2005-12-09 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: eclipse
Version: 3.1.1-6
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.3

Hi!

According to the package debian/copyright file, Eclipse seems to be released
under the CPL.
But eclipse.org website states that, from version 3.1 on, Eclipse has
completed the migration[1] from the CPL to the EPL[2].

[1] http://www.eclipse.org/legal/cpl2epl/
[2] http://www.eclipse.org/org/documents/epl-v10.html

IIUC, you should update the debian/copyright file accordingly.
Thanks.

Why did you mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] with no Version: pseudo-header, then?
If I understand correctly[1], you lose BTS version tracking, by doing
so...

Bug#345604: Undistributable?

2006-01-02 Thread Francesco Poli
Worse: from the (non-)license you quoted, it seems that this
documentation is *not* even distributable!

If this is the case, the Debian project is currently violating someone's
copyright by distributing it and should stop doing that ASAP!

I didn't find anything to directly set the floppy drive I/O port in the
BIOS configuration.
For the record, the machine features an Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG.
The line at the bottom of the screen during the POST is 08/28/96
i430VX-W877-2A59GF2AC-00.

On the other hand, I found some floppy-related configuration parameters:

 * Standard CMOS Setup -> Drive A type:{ 1.44M| 2.88M   }
 * Standard CMOS Setup -> Floppy 3 Mode:   { Disabled | Drive A }
 * BIOS Features Setup -> Boot up Floppy Seek: { Disabled | Enabled }
 * Power Managemente Setup -> IRQ6 (Floppy):   { OFF  | ON  }
 * PNP/PCI Configuration -> Resources: { Manual   | Auto}
 * Int. Peripherals -> Onboard FDD controller: { Disabled | Enabled }

I tried the 2^3=8 possibilities with the last three of them (keeping the
first three on the left values).
Then I tried the 2^3=8 possibilities with the first three (keeping the
last three on the right values).
No luck: I got the same error with every configuration I tried.
I didn't have the time to try out *all* the 2^6=64 possibilities...

I could reproduce the problem even with DeadCD (a live distro based on
Debian which comes with kernel 2.6.8, just like sarge:
http://web.isteve.bofh.cz/deadcd/).

[...]
> A good place to start would be to compare the information you

It seems that every 2.4.x kernel I try works with no floppy issues,
while every 2.6.x kernel fails to insert floppy.ko showing the error.
I could not find a working 2.6.x kernel to compare with the sarge one...

Self-followup to inform you that I added a couple memory modules to
the machine and retried.
Now the machine has a memory capacity equal to 48 Mibyte (that's twice
the capacity debian-installer claims will suffice...) and the
installation completed successfully (at last!).

I repeat, it's sarge debian-installer (as released last june, 3.1 r0):
how can it require so much memory to run? :-(

Great!! :)
It really works!

I modified /boot/grub/menu.lst by substituting the line

  # kopt=root=/dev/hda1 ro

with the line

  # kopt=root=/dev/hda1 ro pnpbios=off

and then issued the command "update-grub".
After a reboot I was able to "modprobe floppy", to mount a floppy disk
and accessing it flawlessly.

Thanks for investigating and providing this workaround!
Bye! :)

Thanks for dealing with this bug.

Anyway, why did you move the *whole* package to non-free?
There's still one DFSG-free document inside.

I think splitting the package into gnupg-doc and gnupg-doc-nonfree would
be far better...
Don't you agree?

Bug#340538: apache2: includes non-free and possibly undistributable files

2005-11-23 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: apache2
Version: 2.0.54-5
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.2.1

Hi!

By reviewing the copyright file, I found out that apache2 includes
code that does not seem to comply with the DFSG.
What is worse, I even found some code that does not seem to be
distributable at all...

Quoting from the copyright file itself:

For the test\zb.c component:

This license does not grant any permission to modify and to distribute
modifications and derivative works (fails DFSG#3).
Upstream copyright holders should be contacted and asked to relicense
the file: I would suggest the Expat license
(http://www.jclark.com/xml/copying.txt).

| For the srclib\apr-util\test\testmd4.c component:

| */

This does not even grant *any* permissions.
It seems to be undistributable (fails DFSG#1 and DFSG#3).
If this is the case, distributing it is also a copyright violation
and should stop ASAP.
Again upstream copyright holders should be contacted and asked to relicense
the file: a good choice could be the Expat license.

| For the srclib\apr\include\apr_md5.h component:
| /*

An identical license holds for the following files:

 - srclib\apr\passwd\apr_md5.c
 - srclib\apr-util\crypto\apr_md4.c
 - srclib\apr-util\include\apr_md4.h

This license grants permission to to "copy and use" and to "make and
use derivative works", but no explicit permission to distribute the
derivative works (fails DFSG#3).
Upstream copyright holders should be got in touch with and asked
for a license change: I would again suggest to recommend the Expat
license.

Bug#315722: prboom: randomly gets signal 11 after a very very short playing time

2005-06-25 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: prboom
Version: 2:2.2.6-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I recently upgraded from woody (oldstable) to sarge (stable) and
now I cannot play freedoom anymore.
When launched from a terminal under X11, prboom loads freedoom's
`doom2.wad' and starts the game. I select "New game" and
the difficulty level (I tried "Nightmare!", "Ultra-Violence" and
"Hurt Me Plenty"). I start to play, but after killing two or three
enemies, the game exits on signal 11.

Note that the woody version of prboom worked like a charm with
the *same* doom2.wad file (from freedoom v0.3, diff says the two
files are identical).

Here's the output I get in the terminal:

Bug#315722: prboom: randomly gets signal 11 after a very very short playing time

I used catchsegv on sarge prboom, but I got no special output

So it seems like prboom does not actually segfault: I'm puzzled...

Second test:

I ran sarge prboom inside gdb and was astonished.
Inside gdb, prboom freezes after some seconds of playing and there seems
to be no way to regain control of the X11 session.
Mouse and keyboard are ignored, apart from special key combinations. If
I switch to a virtual terminal (say tty1: CTRL+ALT+F1), kill gdb, and
switch back to my X11 display, then all I see is a frozen gnome2 desktop
still at low resolution (the one used by prboom: 640x400): mouse is
ignored, while keyboard is not and can be used to type commands inside
the focused xterm.
The only way out I could find was killing the X server with
CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE...

Other tests:

I recompiled prboom with debug symbols and no stripping.
I reran the above described tests.
Same results!

OK, what did I fail to understand?

Wait one second...
Of course excision is possible, but is it really a good idea?
I don't think so.

Karsten's document seems to be valuable: DIG writers chose to derive a
section from it.
And it's GPL-compatible: Karsten's license seems to be, but anyway
Karsten himself states he's willing to relicense the document under the
actual GPL, if it's considered necessary.

Given the above mentioned facts, I don't think we should drop his
copyrighted material, just because he asks what he deserves: credit for
what he wrote.

Obviously, but why do you want to reinvent the wheel?
Free program development should be based on code reuse whenever it's
suitable.
The same applies to free manual development.

This is legitimate, but Karsten is willing to offer his work under the
same license as the DIG, so I don't see a reason to drop his
'contribution'...

AFAICT, Karsten is not trying to coerce anyone.
Actually, Karsten did *not* contribute anything.

He wrote a document and published it under a strange license.
*Then* some DIG writers found that document and decided (without any
coercion) to write a DIG section as a derivative of it.
But they failed to comply with its (really permissive) license.
Karsten is just asking that they comply with his license and publish the
DIG with an appropriate copyright notice.
He's even willing to relicense his document, if there are doubts about
the GPL-compatibility of his strange license.

IMHO the best solution is

 * Karsten relicense (or dual-license) his document under the GPL
 * DIG maintainers simply add a name in the copyright holder list

Think about it: Karsten wrote a valuable document and is offering it
under the GPL; in these times of non-free documentation everywhere, how
can you ask more from him?

Of course it's the maintainer's decision.
But it was a DIG writer's past decision to incorporate Karsten's
document in the DIG, as well.
It was done without proper credit in violation of Karsten's license.
Now Karsten has been asking for proper credit for a long time, it seems.

It sounds suspicious that the decision to rewrite from scratch the
section under question is taken just now: it looks like it's not taken
for technical reasons, but only in order to avoid crediting Karsten.
I'm not arguing that this is actually the case: I trust Joey, if he says
the rewriting will be done for technical reasons.
But anyway, I feel that, in order to avoid giving the *impression* that
Debian doesn't like crediting external contributions, the best solution
is adding proper credit as soon as possible (this should actually have
been done in the first place, or, at least, long before this point...),
in all released versions.
The rewriting can be done later, as the maintainer sees fit and if it's
seen as technically useful.

In other words: Karsten's document is (or will be) licensed in a
GPL-compatible way, was previously judged valuable as a starting point
for one DIG section and was admittedly incorporated with modifications
into the DIG.
I don't see a reason to refuse crediting him.
After proper credit has been inserted, there's of course no obligation
to keep his contribution forever.
Doing a difficult (from a legal standpoint) clean-room reimplementation
in order to avoid adding a little credit sounds unreasonable.
If there are other reasons to do that, I don't see why it's been done
just now: why not later? why wasn't it done in the past (before Karsten
began to complain, for instance)?

[...]

And I of course appreciate Joey's effort.
But I ask myself: why isn't Joey the only DIG writer and copyright
holder?
Because other people contributed and their contributions are judged
useful.
It's called cooperative development and it requires proper credit and
copyright observance.
As long as Karsten's contribution is considered useful, proper credit is
due.

Then Joey has the right to rewrite each and every section he sees fit:
it's his own time, so it's up to him to decide.
There's nothing wrong with that, even though it sounds unreasonable *if*
the only reason is reducing the size of the copyright notice.

Again: I'm *not* saying that this is the only reason, but, if it's not,
then the quickest fix *now* is adding proper credit, thus proving that
the Debian installer team has nothing against crediting contributions
that were judged valuable in the past.
Then Joey (or anyone else) has of course the right to rewrite from
scratch every piece he likes.

I hope I clarified my opinion: my concern is to avoid giving the
*impression* that "we accept external contributions, as long as we
incorporate them without giving proper credit or complying with their
license; as soon as someone complains, we drop them".

Karsten has already offered to relicense his document under the plain
GPL, so this point is moot.

I think that Karsten's attitude is due to a bit of frustration after a
long time of little or no improvement on this issue.
Maybe he's been a bit rude, but at the end of the day, he's just asking
for what he deserves. The Debian installer team have been violating his
copyright for a long time and very little seems to have been done

Bug#318803: debian-reference-common: copyright notice is unclear

2005-07-18 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: debian-reference-common
Version: 1.08-3
Severity: minor

Hi!
Debian-reference copyright notice reads:

This document may used under the terms the GNU General Public License
  version 2 or higher.

Permission is granted to make and distribute verbatim copies of
this document provided the copyright notice and this permission notice
  are preserved on all copies.

Permission is granted to copy and distribute modified versions of
this document under the conditions for verbatim copying, provided that
the entire resulting derived work is distributed under the terms of
a permission notice identical to this one.

Permission is granted to copy and distribute translations of this
document into another language, under the above conditions for
modified versions, except that this permission notice may be included
in translations approved by the Free Software Foundation instead of
  in the original English.

[See /usr/share/common-licenses/GPL-2 for text of GPL v2]

The work is thus released under the GNU GPL (v2 or later), but some phrases
taken from a different license seem to have leaked into the copyright
notice. These statements have nothing to do with the GPL and it's
not clear if they are intended as additional permissions (some of
them, at least, would be unnecessary in that case) or as something
else.
The canonical copyright notice for a work released under the GNU GPL v2
or later is something along the lines of

  Copyright (c) 2001-2004 Osamu Aoki <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

This work is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify

The copyright notice I proposed is, AFAIK, the clearest way to release a
work under the GPLv2 (or later). It's basically the one suggested at the
end of the GPLv2 itself...
Anyway IANAL, TINLA.

Well it's a weak copyleft, but it's definitely *not* the GPL.

Well, not exactly.
"Can" is the correct word even for works released under one license
only.
The reason is that the recipient *can* redistribute and/or modify the
work and, *if* she does so, she *must* do so under the terms of the GPL.
But the recipient is *not* compelled to redistribute and/or modify the
work: she can entirely avoid engaging in such activities.
After all, it's a permission, not a chain-letter-like obligation as in
"if you receive this work, you *must* redistribute it to someone else"!

No, the above quoted text is *not* extracted from the GPL: the GPLv2
text does not even include any occurrence of the word "approved"...
The "translations" above does not referr to translations of the GPL, but
to translations of the "permission notice".

If your "True" refers to this last sentence, then I of course agree.

The extraneous phrases are the ones (re-)quoted below:

| Permission is granted to copy and distribute modified versions of

OK, but that seems to be entirely unproblematic (as long as some parts
are dual-licensed under GFDL/GPL, the recipient can choose a DFSG-free
license, i.e. the GPL, and all is fine).

As I said, if the package is under the GPLv2 (or later) without any
additional permissions, the clearest way to say so is through a clear
copyright notice.
The one I proposed above is the canonical one (just with s/program/work/
to avoid confusion).

Bug#319630: swf-player: spawns dufunct (zombie) processes and does not work

2005-07-23 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: swf-player
Version: 0.3.4-2sarge0.1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi!
I'm trying to use swf-player as a plugin with Galeon.

Galeon about:plugins page does *not* show libswfdecmozilla.so as an installed
plugin, even though the file lives in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/, besides
the other installed plugins (libnullplugin.so and libmozsvgdec.so, that
are correctly shown as installed and enabled).
So I thought something else was required so that Galeon can see the swf
plugin...

But then I noticed that, when visiting a web page that includes SWF animations
(I tried several ones, one example is http://www.westtoeast.it/), Galeon
spawns some defunct (zombie) processes:

$ ps aux | grep -i defunct
frx 1427 0.0 0.0 00 pts/5Z+ 12:36 0:00
[swfdec-mozilla-]
frx 1428 0.0 0.0 00 pts/5Z+ 12:36 0:00
[swfdec-mozilla-]
frx 1429 0.0 0.0 00 pts/5Z+ 12:36 0:00
[swfdec-mozilla-]
frx 1430 0.0 0.0 00 pts/5Z+ 12:36 0:00
[swfdec-mozilla-]
frx 1431 0.0 0.0 00 pts/5Z+ 12:36 0:00
[swfdec-mozilla-]
frx 1432 0.0 0.0 00 pts/5Z+ 12:36 0:00
[swfdec-mozilla-]
frx 1540 0.0 0.3 1536 468 pts/6S+ 13:08 0:00 grep -i defunct

But this is the only tangible effect of the swf plugin... :-(
I still see the default-plugin symbol as a placeholder for unplayed SWFs
animations and clicking on the symbols brings on the Default Plugin dialog
that reads:

| This page contains information of a type (application/x-shockwave-flash)
| that can only be viewed with the appropriate Plug-in.

What's wrong?
I thought that I had just installed the appropriate (DFSG-free) plugin...

Bug#319949: adesklets: includes non-free documentation (GFDL)

2005-07-25 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: adesklets
Version: 0.4.7-1
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.2.1

Hi!

adesklets manual is distributed under the GFDL and thus does not comply
with the DFSG.

See file:///usr/share/doc/adesklets/html/en/index.html :

| This manual is for adesklets (version 0.4.7, 02 April 2005).
|
| Copyright © 2004, 2005 Sylvain Fourmanoit [EMAIL PROTECTED]

| any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no
| Invariant Sections, with the Front-Cover Texts being "adesklets
| documentation". A copy of the license is included in the section
| entitled "GNU Free Documentation License."

Upstream authors should be contacted and asked to relicense the manual
under a DFSG-free license.
Since the rest of the package is under the GNU GPL, the GPL itself would
the best choice for the manual too: it would make it easier for everyone
to copy and paste material back and forth between program and documentation.

If upstream are not willing to relicense, they may accept to dual-license
under GFDL/GPL, perhaps.

If otherwise a license change is not achievable, the manual should be
purged from the package and (hopefully) replaced by a DFSG-free one.

2005-07-09 Thread Francesco Poli
Hi,
please consider to replace psmerge with psmerge2 by Peter Williams: it's
a derived work that seems to fix (at least) some issues with psmerge.
It seems to be released under the same license as psutils...

See http://www.newton.cx/~peter/docs/psmerge.html for further details.

Mmmmh, if you mean trying to *use* alsa sound drivers, I'm afraid that
this would imply switching from Linux 2.4.x to 2.6.x (or patch the
2.4.31 I'm currently using).
Am I correct?

If you mean simply issuing 'aptitude install libsdl1.2debian-all' as
root (thus removing the conflicting libsdl1.2debian-oss), it would be an
easy test, I would say (are there any side-effects, assuming I do not
touch the kernel?)

This is unfortunate, but it will bite regardless of which solution is
chosen (copyright assignment or agreement to relicense).
As I said, both solutions require getting in touch with each current

Bug#335104: harden-doc: quotes the version 1.0 of SC, which is superseded by version 1.1

2005-10-21 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: harden-doc
Version: 3.4
Severity: minor

The Social Contract is quoted in section 2.3 as follows:

| We Won't Hide Problems
|
| We will keep our entire bug-report database open for public view
| at all times. Reports that users file on-line will immediately
| become visible to others.

This is from version 1.0 of the SC, which is now superseded by version 1.1
(ratified on April 26, 2004), that states:

| We will not hide problems
|
| We will keep our entire bug report database open for public view
| at all times. Reports that people file online will promptly
| become visible to others.

I think that the current SC should be quoted, rather than the old one...

Bug#335220: doc-linux-text: [NONFREE-DOC] includes non-free documentation

2005-10-22 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: doc-linux-text
Version: 2005.04-1
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.2.1

According to the copyright file, some of the included documents
do not comply with the DFSG.
See below for details.

In order to solve these issues, upstream authors of relevant documents
should be got in touch with and asked for a license change.

In cases where this turns out to be impossible or unsuccessful, the
document should be removed from the package (or possibly moved into
an appropriate package for the non-free section).

See
for further information about moving non-free docs out of main.

License issues in detail

* Boot+Root+Raid+LILO, Root-RAID-HOWTO

License text is:

| This document is GNU copyleft by Michael Robinton
| [e-mail address].
|
| Permission to use, copy, distribute this document for any purpose is
| hereby granted, provided that the author's / editor's name and this
| notice appear in all copies and/or supporting documents; and that an
| unmodified version of this document is made freely available. This
| document is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but
| WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY, either expressed or implied. While every effort
| has been taken to ensure the accuracy of the information documented
| herein, the author / editor / maintainer assumes NO RESPONSIBILITY for
| any errors, or for any damages, direct or consequential, as a result
| of the use of the information documented herein.

This license is vague and lacks explicit permission to modify (and
distribute modified versions of) the document (fails DFSG#3).

Moreover the "unmodified version of this document is made freely
available" condition could be meant to forbid charging for distribution
(depending on how "freely available" is interpreted): can possibly
fail DFSG#1.

I suggest asking upstream to relicense under the GNU GPL (if he wants
a copyleft license, as it seems from the ill-phrased copyright
notice), or maybe under the Expat license
 (if he prefers a simple
permissive license).

* K7s5a-HOWTO

It's distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons ShareAlike 1.0
Licence (CC-sa-1.0) which does not comply with the DFSG.
See

for details on the issues that most debian-legal contributors see in
CC-by*-1.0 and with CC-*-2.0 licenses: several issues hold for
CC-sa-1.0, as well.

* Coffee

This is problematic and questionable, as it seems to use the Creative
Commons Attribution-ShareAlike _summary_ as if it were the actual
_license_ !
But the summary is rather vague and unclear, from a legal standpoint,
A court could even rule that the Debian mirror network
doesn't even have the permission to distribute this document...

Clarification by upstream should be asked for: since upstream
seems to want a copyleft, I would suggest to persuade him to
relicense under the GNU GPL.

* DNS-HOWTO

License text is:

| (C)opyright 1995-2001 Nicolai Langfeldt, Jamie Norrish & Co. Do not
| modify without amending copyright, distribute freely but retain
| copyright message.

This lacks explicit permission to modify: it states "do not modify
without amending copyright" (probably a legal no-op), but it fails
to state that I _have_ permission to modify.
Current copyright laws default to no permission to modify in any
manner (fails DFSG#3).
"Distribute freely" seems to be more a command than a permission:
I'm not an English native speaker, but this doesn't sound like
English legalese...

It seems upstream like simple permissive licenses (assuming
I understand what they wanted to achieve, without actually
succeeding...).
I would suggest to ask them to relicense the document under
the Expat license .

* Oracle-8-HOWTO, Reading-List-HOWTO, Wacom-USB-mini-HOWTO

License text is:

| You may use, disseminate, and reproduce this document freely, provided you:
|
| * do not omit or alter this copyright notice.
|
| * do not omit or alter the version number and date.
|
| * do not omit or alter the document's pointer to the current WWW version.
|
| * clearly mark any condensed, or altered versions as such.
|
| These restrictions are intended to protect potential readers from stale or
| mangled versions. If you think you have a good case for an exception, ask me.

This license lacks explicit permission to modify (fails DFSG#3).
Even if this permission is considered indirectly granted (I doubt it could),
the second and third restrictions seem controversial.

My suggestion is: try to persuade upstream to relicense under the
Expat license .

* /many, many, many documents/

Many HOWTOs and documents are distributed under the GNU FDL license
(versions 1.1 and 1.2), which does not comply with the DFSG (even when

As I previously stated, I use a pure stable and would rather avoid using

Is the second backtrace I sent of any use in understanding

IMHO, you should begin contacting upstream authors ASAP, so that you
have enough time to persuade them to relicense before we are close to
etch release...
Perhaps you could move non-free documents to a separate
doc-linux-text-nonfree package, while you wait for the relicensing
effort to be completed. Then each document would be able to be moved
back to doc-linux-text, as soon as it's relicensed in a DFSG-free
manner...

I understand your point of view.
I personally believe that the right to distribute anonymous
modifications should be granted by a DFSG-free work, but I admit there's
not (yet) a strong consensus on this...

Bug#335403: libgmp3-doc: [NONFREE-DOC:GFDL] includes non-free documentation

2005-10-23 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: libgmp3-doc
Version: 4.1.4-6
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.2.1

According to the copyright file (and the texinfo file itself),
the GMP documentation is released under the GFDL license (v1.1
or later) and hence does not comply with the DFSG.
See

for details on the issues that most debian-legal contributors
see in the GFDL license.

In order to solve this issue, upstream copyright holder
should be contacted and asked for a license change (unlikely,
since the copyright holder is the FSF...)

Otherwise, the package should be moved to the non-free section,
possibly leaving the (L)GPL'd demo code in main (in a separate
libgmp3-examples package)

See

for further information about moving non-free docs out of main.

IIUC, Galeon segfaults: so I thought "maybe it could be some buffer that

Bug#335808: cupsys: writes to /etc/cups/ppds.dat, should write to somewhere else

2005-10-25 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: cupsys
Version: 1.1.23-10
Severity: wishlist

Hi!

FHS v2.3 chapter 2[1] states, in part:

| "Static" files include binaries, libraries, documentation files

| intervention

Later on, section about /etc states, in part:

| The /etc hierarchy contains configuration files. A "configuration file"

[2]
http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#ETCHOSTSPECIFICSYSTEMCONFIGURATION

cupsys writes data to /etc/cups/ppds.dat: this file should
be moved elsewhere (/var/something?).
Moving the file will be useful, once FHS 2.3 compliance is mandated by
Policy (currently FHS 2.1 compliance is required).

Thanks for your attention.

The license is too vague and unclear, but, if the author wants his
software to be DFSG-free, we (at debian-legal) can suggest an
appropriate license change.

OK, no restrictions on use.

Here it seems that permission to distribute is granted, but only as part
of low cost CD-ROM collections.
No permission to distribute via other means seems to be granted.
Non-free.

Nothing new, since the license already stated there are no restrictions
on use.

Common desclaimer of responsibility, even if phrased in a weird manner.

These sentences are kind requests and do not really belong in a license.

The license ends here.

There is no explicit permission to distribute (except as part of low
cost CD-ROM collections).
There is no explicit permission to modify or distribute modified
versions.
Non-free.

If the author really meant to make his software Free, it seems that he
wanted a simple permissive non-copyleft license.
I would suggest upstream author to change the license to the Expat
(a.k.a. MIT) license: http://www.jclark.com/xml/copying.txt

This would solve all the licensing issues: newmat would become DFSG-free
and reach the goals of license simplicity and permissiveness.

Bug#279127: debootstrap dependencies

2005-10-02 Thread Francesco Poli
I think that section C.4.2. _Install debootstrap_ should mention an
additional dependency for debootstrap: libc6 (at least version 2.3.x).

I got an error message on a DeLi Linux system (http://www.delilinux.de/)
which I tried to run debootstrap from.
After installing wget and ar, I unpacked debootstrap deb by hand and ran
debootstrap: it complained with an error message about an unresolved
symbol (GLIBC2.3, if I recall correctly, but I'm not sure, since
unfortunately I forgot to write it down... sorry!).
The DeLi Linux system comes with glibc version 2.1.x.

For the record, I wiped the DeLi Linux system out and installed DSL
(http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/) that comes with glibc 2.3.x ...

---~---

Another issue seems to affect section C.4.4.1. _Mount partitions_:
it suggests to mount the proc virtual filesystem with the command

  # mount -t proc proc /proc

from within the chroot environment.
I tried, but got an empty /proc.
And consequently I could not complete the kernel-image package
installation (as outlined in section C.4.5. _Install a kernel_):
mkinitrd failed complaining it couldn't find any /dev/fd or
/proc/self/fd/ and thus the postinst exited with errors.
The package was left unconfigured...

To work around this issue, I had to mount the proc filesystem from
*outside* the chroot environment, as in

  # mount -t proc proc /mnt/debinst/proc

After that, /proc looked non-empty from within the chroot environment
too, and I could finish the kernel-image package set up.

2005-10-03 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: gnupg-doc
Version: 2003.04.06-4
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.2.1

Hello!

Two included documents are released under the GNU FDL license (version
1.1 or later), although with no unmodifiable & unremovable parts
(i.e. Invariant Sections, Front/Back-Cover Texts, ...).
Nonetheless, the consensus on debian-legal is that a work licensed
under the terms of the GNU FDL v1.1 or later does not meet the DFSG,
even if it does not include unmodifiable & unremovable parts.

Consequently those two documents do not comply with the DFSG.

Corresponding copyright holders should be contacted and asked to
relicense the documents in a DFSG-free manner (for instance under
the GNU GPL or possibly under a dual GFDL/GPL license).

[Note that, for the GNU Privacy Handbook, there's little hope to
see it relicensed, since the copyright holder is the FSF.]

If upstream do not agree to such license change, the documents
should be purged from this package and possibly moved to an
appropriate non-free package.

Hi!

The copyright file (correctly) states that the GnuPG Mini HOWTO is
released under the GNU *Library* General Public License (LGPL)

But then (incorrectly) refers to the GNU General Public License
/usr/share/common-licenses/GPL.

I think it should mention the /usr/share/common-licenses/LGPL-2
instead (and of course call it GNU *Library* General Public

I suspected it couldn't be too difficult, even though it sounds
awkwardly contorted (I still cannot imagine why are all these

Wow! That's really unbelievable!
And I've just checked it by myself!

I had noticed that there are two English variants for the sky subtitles
by reading /usr/share/doc/scummvm/README.gz, but didn't think they could
differ so much...
Anyway I thought I was seeing the british english subtitles, since I had
no language option for sky in my .scummvmrc

  [scummvm]
  versioninfo=0.7.1

  [sky]
  subtitles=true

and /usr/share/doc/scummvm/README.gz states that English (Great Britain)
is the default...

Now I've just set

  [scummvm]
  versioninfo=0.7.1

  [sky]

Mmmmh, I think I've just found a bug in ScummVM documentation...
Do you need a separate bug report against scummvm?

I'm having a hard time in understanding how a few string substitutions
can be considered "not easy"... Maybe the reason is that I do *not* have
any clue about the game data format of _Beneath a steel sky_... :-(
But, if substituting a string with another one is so difficult, I'm
beginning to think that this format is awfully designed. :-( Are we
sure that we have the actual preferred form for modification of the game
data?

Well, I'm not suggesting that *every* single little discrepancy should
be fixed.
What I'm concerned about is just this big one: I noticed other little
differences in the letter between speech and subtitles, but this one is
a difference in the *meaning*.

The fact that there are many other negligible bugs should not be an
excuse for not fixing a minor, but not negligigle one.

As I said above, please fix just this one... :)

Yes, that's a reasonable assumption.
And I think it's quite common practice in gag and joke localization:
whenever you cannot keep *both* meaning and wordplay-based humour, it's
usually better to change the former in order to keep the latter.

Since unfortunately I do not speak Swedish (not even a little...), I

Bug#327945: fbpanel: items disappear in taskbar when minimizing windows

2005-09-12 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: fbpanel
Version: 4.1-2
Severity: normal

Hi!

I think I found a little bug in fbpanel.
Steps to reproduce:

* start a fluxbox session with fbpanel on
* open a window (xterm or any other graphical application that opens
  a window)
* take a look at the taskbar: one item is there and correctly matches
  the window
* click on the fluxbox-provided "minimize" button (the _ symbol in
the right end of the upper border, in most themes)
* the taskbar item vanishes suddenly! where is it? completely invisible!
* switch to another workspace (using the pager or some configured key
combination, it doesn't seem to make a difference)
* switch back to the previous workspace: surprise! the taskbar item
is back from the void! and correctly shows square brackets around
  the window title...

Why taskbar items disappear when I minimize windows?
Is this a bug or is there something I failed to understand?

Huh?
I would say this is a bug in the game data, not in the engine.
What you should do, AIUI, is modify beneath-a-steel-sky so that the
right (consistent) subtitles appear, rather than the awkward ones...
I cannot see where are the difficulties: it's a matter of simple string
substitution, isn't it?

Maybe I'm a bit ignorant about the data format, but the subtitles must
be included somewhere inside them, right?

As I see it, upstream is Revolution Software and I don't count on seeing
a new _Beneath a Steel Sky_ version out...

Well, to me even writing down Swedish subtitles while I see them on
screen is too difficult! :-(
As I said, I can send you a game-save from which you can see subtitles
by yourself: I had real fun in reading that conversation in all kind of
languages! ;-)

Maybe someone went mad about that dialog, but what's funny is that only
English subtitles were changed. English speech was left untouched...

Bug#323687: diveintopython: [NONFREE-DOC:GFDL1.1] does not comply with DFSG

2005-08-17 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: diveintopython
Version: 5.4-1
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.2.1

Hi!

_Dive into Python_ is released under the GNU FDL license (version 1.1),
although with no unmodifiable & unremovable parts (i.e. Invariant
Sections, Front/Back-Cover Texts, ...).
Nonetheless, the consensus on debian-legal is that a work licensed
under the terms of the GNU FDL v1.1 does not meet the DFSG, even if it
does not include unmodifiable & unremovable parts.

Consequently _Dive into Python_ does not comply with the DFSG.

Upstream author should be contacted and asked to relicense
the document in a DFSG-free manner (for instance under the
GNU GPL or possibly under a dual GFDL/GPL license)

If upstream does not agree to such license change, the package
should be moved to the non-free section :-(

Comparing with e2fsprogs Debian package copyright file, it seems

The Debian documentation policy (http://www.debian.org/doc/docpolicy) reads:

 Comments/Problems:

I booted from CD (with the help of a Smart Boot Manager floppy), selecting
"linux26".
After the low memory warning, I chose the Italian keyboard keymap.
The CD detection went fine: debian-installer scanned the CD Debian archive.
The "Loading components of the Debian Installer" step went on from
0 to 85 % (I think), then...

  0. the screen blanked for a while
  1. the interface got repainted (again "Loading components of the
 Debian Installer")
  2. the progress bar restarted from zero
  3. progress status said "unpacking base-installer"
  4. the progress bar reached 10 %
  5. goto 0. (in a seemingly endless loop)

Actually the loop was repeated a few times and then I got a permanent
blank screen.
Switching on the fourth virtual terminal (ALT+F4) shows that there's
still activity: an endless loop of 82 identical lines are
logged to /var/log/syslog.
I counted them by switching on the second virtual terminal (ALT+F2)
and determining that

  # tail -83 /var/log/syslog

shows the first line identical to the last one (apart from the date, of
course...).
Unfortunately I couldn't mount any floppy disk or hard disk: as
a consequence, I was not able to save those log lines. :-(

Please note that the CD and CD reader seem to work properly: I could
successfully check the CD content md5sums from a previosly installed
system (I mean: on the same machine), by mounting the CD and issueing
the following command in the CD root directory:

  $ md5sum -cv md5sum.txt

I cannot go on with the installation.
I even tried in expert mode, but got similar errors...
What can I do?

Bug#332942: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-386: fails to insert floppy.ko claiming "io-port 0x03f2 in use"

2005-10-09 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-386
Version: 2.6.8-16
Severity: normal

I installed Debian sarge (3.1 r0) on an old Pentium machine, following the
manual debootstrap procedure (described in the Debian sarge installation
guide, appendix C.). I could not use debian-installer because I didn't
have enough memory (only 16 Mibyte).

Now I cannot mount floppy disks (not even as root):

# mount -t ext2 /dev/fd0 /media/floppy/
mount: /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device
# ls -altrF /dev/fd0
brw-rw 1 root floppy 2, 0 Feb 26 2005 /dev/fd0

Oct 9 16:33:55 oldbox kernel: floppy0: Floppy io-port 0x03f2 in use

But io-port 0x03f2 does not seem to be in use:

The error shows up even when simply trying to load floppy.ko:

Please note that:

* I can mount the same floppy disk flawlessly if I boot with
System Rescue CD (a live distro currently based on Linux 2.4.x:

* I had no difficulties in using the floppy drive when other
distros were installed on the same machine (DamnSmallLinux
  http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/, DeLi Linux http://www.delilinux.de/)
* I even tried booting with the floppy=thinkpad kernel parameter
(despite this machine is not a laptop), but the error still
  showed up
* I searched the f...ine web and found a few people that experienced
the same problem, but most of them got no answer from the forum
or mailing list they were writing to, while the rest of them
got suggestions that do not seem to work (at least for me...)

What can I do?

Maybe, but, as I said, that machine has a memory capacity equal to 32
Mibyte (and has passed two full memtest86 runs with no errrors).
The debian-installer documentation claims it will run with as little as
24 Mibyte...

What did I fail to understand?

That's not good news for etch... :-(

Yes, as I said.

But I'm *not* installing etch, I'm trying to install sarge!
As released last june. That's Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r0, nothing more,
nothing less...

Bug#333219: galeon: crashes when loading a particular website (http://www.jobcrawler.it)

2005-10-10 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: galeon
Version: 1.3.20-1
Severity: normal

Hi!

I recently noted that Galeon crashes whenever I try to load
http://www.jobcrawler.it

Steps to reproduce:

$ galeon -n http://www.jobcrawler.it

Galeon main window appears, the only tab starts to load the website main
page, then a dialog shows up, saying

| The Application "galeon" has quit unexpectedly.
|
| You can inform the developers of what happened to help them fix
| it. Or you can restart the application right now.

Please note that:

* I don't know if this is Debian-specific

* Mozilla works fine on this website (no errors or crashes with
  "mozilla http://www.jobcrawler.it";)

* The crash is reproducible with a newly created user (on my Debian sarge
  machine)

* The crash is reproducible even from an already started Galeon with
other tabs in use: it crashes as soon as I open a new tab in order
  to load http://www.jobcrawler.it

* The crash does _not_ show up with Galeon on another Debian sarge machine
  (can't understand why)

* I don't know if this is also a security issue (please bring this bug to
the attention of the Debian security team and raise the severity if this
  is the case!)

Here's a backtrace:

Backtrace was generated from '/usr/bin/galeon'

Bug#333453: harden-doc: copyright notice is unclear

2005-10-11 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: harden-doc
Version: 3.2.4
Severity: minor

Hi!
harden-doc copyright file clearly states that the _Securing Debian Manual_
is released under the GNU GPL license (version 2 or later).

Good! :)

On the other hand, the copyright notice included in the document itself
(in the HTML version, for instance) says:

| Copyright © 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña
|
| Copyright © 2001 Alexander Reelsen, Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña

The last three paragraphs have nothing to do with the GPLv2,
and confuse the reader (IMHO).
It's not clear if they are additional permissions (no, they are not,
since the copyright file tells a different story and clearly states
that the only license is the GNU GPL version 2 or later) or
something else.

The canonical copyright notice for a work released under the GNU GPL v2
or later is something along the lines of

Is that a hardware setting (such as a jumper or something) you're
referring to?

The beauty of free software is also a community of users helping each
other... :-/
Unfortunately IANAKH (I Am Not A Kernel Hacker) and thus I'm afraid I
don't have enough knowledge to solve the problem all by myself... :-(

Any suggestions on what I could look for (so that I don't have to review
every and each line of code of the Debian sarge base system)?

Your suggestion made me think it could be swf-player's fault.
I had installed it (on the machine where Galeon now crashes), found
out that it does not work, filed a bug report (#319630) and
then forgot about it while waiting for a reply from swf-player package
maintainer...

Now I removed and purged swf-player and all the dependencies that are
not useful for any other installed package.
But the crash still shows up.

So it's not swf-player's fault, I would say.

Anyway, installed package lists are fairly different between the two
machines.
Nonetheless, no difference concerns the packages listed in the
Recommends: and Suggests: field of the galeon package...

If you need a diff between the two dpkg --get-selections output, let me
know...

Hardware is really different, as well.
Do you need detailed hardware component lists?

> - configuration (you tested with a new user on both machines?)

Yes, I tested with a newly created user on both machines and the results
are consistent with the ones I got with old users...
Galeon consistently crashes on one machine, but not on the other.

Installed plugins seem to be exactly the same (now).
"about:plugins" shows libnullplugin.so and libmozsvgdec.so (on both
machines)

I think it does, unfortunately.

Each copyright holder should be tracked, contacted and asked for a
signed copyright assignment paper.
Then SPI will be able to relicense the website.

A less difficult solution is avoiding copyright assignements and simply
asking for a license change: each copyright holder should be tracked,
contacted and asked to agree with the relicensing.

The latter solution is (relatively) easier, since contributors must be
tracked and contacted anyway, but a permission to relicense can be
obtained via e-mail, while a copyright assignment must be done in a
written and signed (deadtree) paper, AFAIK.

My recommendations are:

 GNU GPL v2
 --
 (http://www.fsf.org/licensing/licenses/gpl.txt)
 if copyleft is desired

 Expat a.k.a. MIT

if copyleft is not perceived as important and/or maximum license
 compatibility is desired

As you yourself state, those sentences grant additional permissions
beyond the GNU GPL v2.
If the copyright holders (all of them) are fine with this, so be it.
But then, the debian/copyright file is inaccurate, since it doesn't
mention any additional permission and thus does not reflect the actual
copyright.

Please reopen the bug and fix the debian/copyright file.

Bug#329157: scummvm: incorrect statement about sky default subtitle language in documentation

2005-09-19 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: scummvm
Version: 0.7.1-1
Severity: minor

Hi!

I think I found a bug in ScummVM documentation.

File /usr/share/doc/scummvm/README.gz states (in section 5.2):

| Beneath a Steel Sky:
| gb - English (Great Britain) (default)
| en - English USA
| de - German
   [...]

thus claiming that British English is the default language for
_Beneath a Steel Sky_ subtitles.

This claim seems to be wrong, since I get different subtitles
with the two following ~/.scummvmrc files:

  [scummvm]
  versioninfo=0.7.1

  [sky]
  subtitles=true

and

  [scummvm]
  versioninfo=0.7.1

  [sky]
  language=gb
  subtitles=true

See bug#322620 for a reminder on how I noticed that...

American English is apparently the actual default and should be correctly
documented as such.

Bug#329379: Please set severity to serious

2005-09-24 Thread Francesco Poli
Hi!

I think that the severity of this bug is not properly set.
Being a severe violation of Debian policy, it should be raised to
severity 'serious', I would say.

Thanks.

I think it *does* need to be handled:
http://release.debian.org/removing-non-free-documentation

And it should be handled beginning from now: delaying its solving could
mean ending up with a documentation-less package when etch is out...

Or find replacement DFSG-free documentation (possibly write or help
writing such documentation)...

The fact that you think it's better to wait before taking action on this
bug doesn't mean the bug is less severe...

One question: since the bug was already there long ago (only buried
under a botched copyright notice), can you send a "found in version
very.first.that.hit.the.archives" to the BTS?
Would this allow new versions to propagate to testing (the RC bug is
*already* in testing, so the RC bug count will not increase with a new
version entering testing)?

IUUC, BTS version tracking makes this possible...

You are always free to take a program and replace it with another one,
but that doesn't mean the program is DFSG-free.
The same holds for documentation, firmware, and... yes!, music, images,

Bug#321030: fbpanel: fails to update dclock tooltip

2005-08-08 Thread Francesco Poli
An update on the dclock update issue ;)

I noticed that fbpanel updates dclock tooltip content at each midnight.
Consequently, this tooltip *can* be used to provide correct time
information, *as long as* its date format only includes fields that
change at midnights.

Examples:

TooltipFmt = %a, %_d %b %Y %k:%M:%S %z<--- becomes outdated
TooltipFmt = %a, %_d %b %Y<--- OK

This is probably a design decision, rather than a bug.
But it should be documented clearly, so that users are warned.

Bug#235809: /usr/bin/mozilla-1.6: Problems with postscript printing

2005-08-08 Thread Francesco Poli
Hi!

I had this problem myself on the very first system I upgraded from woody
to sarge.
I tried the "100 character long workaround" that was suggested on the
printed error message: it managed to make the error go away, but
produced a printed page where every character is displayed as a blank
rectangle.

Then I found this bug report, and tried the workaround suggested by
Margarita.
It worked great! :)
All printing difficulties seem to have disappeared suddenly after I
commented out that line in /etc/mozilla/prefs.js and restarted my
gecko-based browser (Galeon)!
Thanks Margarita, you saved my day! ;-)

Unfortunately, I later noticed that this workaround has a bad
interaction with the libmozsvgdec.so plugin.
Actually when I try to display an SVG image with Galeon, I get a dialog
with the following error:

| The Libart/Freetype SVG rendering engine could not initialize the
| freetype library. Please go to
| http://www.mozilla.org/projects/fonts/unix/enabling_truetype.html and
| follow steps 2-7.

and the SVG image is rendered with no texts inside.

If I re-enable the line pref("font.FreeType2.enable", true); line in
/etc/mozilla/prefs.js, then the error dialog goes away and I can see the
SVG image. Well, fonts do not really look right (sodipodi and inkscape
display the image differently) and I see no color gradients, but that's
probably an issue with the libmozsvgdec.so plugin, so it's off-topic
here...

Bug#322620: beneath-a-steel-sky: subtitles inconsistent with spoken audio in a conversation in front of Burke's Bio Surgery

2005-08-11 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: beneath-a-steel-sky
Version: 0.0368-3
Severity: minor

When I reach Burke's Bio Surgery and talk to the fancy man
in front of the door, if I ask about going out of the city,
I see subtitles that are completely different from the spoken
audio.

This should be fixed by replacing those subtitles with transcriptions
of the spoken audio.

Well, I may consider small differences in the letter as reasonable.
But what I'm talking about is a case where the *meaning* of the dialog
is definitely different between speech and subtitles!
It may well be intended (more on this later), but it appears to me as a
*bug* anyway...

In the meanwhile, I've done further investigation about this, ahem, bug.
BTW, if you need a game-save done just before the conversation in
question, do not hesitate to ask.

The wrong (English) subtitles are the following ones:

Rob: How can I get out of the City?
Mr Cool: WHY? Aren't you HAPPY here?
Rob: I want to get back to the GAP...
   Mr Cool: Are you SERIOUS?
Rob: Oh yes. I've seen enough of the City...
...MORE than enough.
Mr Cool: Listen, I don't want to DEPRESS you...
...but you can't CHANGE your DESTINY...
...at least not without official SANCTION.

The corresponding spoken phrases are roughly as follows (at least
this is how I understood them: take into account that I am *not* an
English native speaker, so I may be wrong):

Rob: How can I get out of the City?
Mr Cool: What have you thought about? DEFECATION?
   Rob: Don't you mean DEFECTION?
Mr Cool: What? It's not what I said?
Rob: I asked you about leaving the City...
...not bodily processes!
Mr Cool: Do not making SENSE!
...but anyway you can't leave the City.
There's a RESTRICTION on travel.

One surprising thing that I noticed is that other subtitles (Italian,
Spanish, French, Portuguese) are much more close to the meaning of
the spoken audio than English subtitles. Actually those other subtitles
seem to resemble to a translation of the spoken phrases, while English
subtitles just tell a different story...
Note that I'm an Italian native speaker, but I do not speak Spanish,
French or Portuguese. Consequently I'm not absolutely sure about
the latter languages; anyway it really looks like those subtitles
have a meaning similar to the Italian one...
I even checked German and Swedish subtitles, but I'm really not
qualified to tell what they mean. For the record, they seem to
be structured similarly to the other non-English ones...

Since English subtitles seem to be much softer than the spoken
audio (and than non-English subtitles), this discrepancy smells
like censorship or something.
Are you aware of any issues that Revolution Software had to face
in English-speaking countries?

Bug#320384: debian-installer-manual: please treat parted and ntfsresize

2005-07-28 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: debian-installer-manual

Hi!

Section _Lossless Repartitioning_ should talk about parted and
ntfsresize, as well.
As it is now, it seems to be a bit misleading: it makes the reader think
that the only way to losslessly repartition a hard disk with VFAT
filesystems is the good old fips...

Fair enough...
It seems that I misinterpreted "From DOS or Windows" as if it meant
"when you start from a system with DOS or Windows installed"... I now
realize that that is not the whole meaning, since it also means "and you
want to repartition under DOS or Windows"!

I apologize for the misunderstanding.

Sure.

Yes, I suspected that, but it's not clearly stated in the manual.
Maybe saying it explicitly may be useful, since a reader who's
generally knowledgeable about free software and GNU/Linux, but not
specifically about Debian, could be used to parted and ntfsresize, but
he/she may not know that debian-installer provides exactly the same
functionality as such tools (being based on them)...

Bug#320692: torsmo: makes root-tail disappear, when run on root window with double buffering

2005-07-31 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: torsmo
Version: 0.18-5
Severity: normal

Hi!
I'm trying to enable double-buffering in torsmo, without giving it a
window of its own:

In my ~/.torsmorc there are the following options (among the other ones):

| # Create own window instead of using desktop (required in nautilus)
| own_window no
|
| # Use double buffering (reduces flicker, may not work for everyone)
| double_buffer yes

The result is good, as far as torsmo is concerned (no more flickering!).
But root-tail output is not visible anymore.

My root-tail command line (in case it's useful) is:

root-tail -f -g 538x320+8+64 -font 6x10 \
  /var/log/messages,green /var/log/exim4/mainlog,yellow /var/log/kern.log,red

Note that changing double_buffer to "no" makes root-tail visible again,
but at the same time makes torsmo flicker...

Is this a bug in torsmo?

Is there a workaround to have torsmo with double-buffering on the root
window *and* root-tail?

Bug#321030: fbpanel: fails to update dclock tooltip

2005-08-02 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: fbpanel
Version: 4.1-2
Severity: normal

Hi!

I've just finished to configure fbpanel and noticed something weird in the
dclock plugin.
It seems that its tooltip is not updated whenever it pops up.
I would like to set it so that it displays a more detailed time.
This is the relevant ~/.fbpanel/default snippet:

  # Digital Clock
  Plugin {
  type = dclock
  config {
  ClockFmt = %R
  TooltipFmt = %a %b %d %H:%M %Z
Action = xmessage Please define some command &
  }
  }

But when I rest the mouse over it and have the tooltip pop up, I see an
outdated time.
For instance Wed Aug 03 01:02 CEST, while the clock already displays
01:08 (and so does date +%R from command line!).

It seems that the tooltip content is computed at startup only...
Is this a bug?
How can I workaround it?

Heh! :)

$ while true; do touch .fbpanel/default ; sleep 60; done

but I have to start this command at the right instant, otherwise the
tooltip stays outdated by a minute most of the time... ;-)

OK, let me switch back to serious mode... ;-)

Bug#405132: cdimage.debian.org: etch multi-arch netinst CD fails integrity check

2006-12-31 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: cdimage.debian.org
Severity: normal

Hi!

I downloaded a recent snapshot of the new multi-arch netinst CD ISO image.
I checked the image MD5 checksum and it is OK.
I burned the CD and then tried to check the integrity of its content:

  $ mount /cdrom/
  $ cd /cdrom/
  $ grep -A 4 labeled README.txt
 This CD-ROM is labeled

Debian GNU/Linux testing "Etch" - Official Snapshot
 Multi-architecture i386/amd64/powerpc NETINST #1 20061228-09:45

  $ md5sum -c md5sum.txt
  md5sum: MD5 check failed for './md5sum.txt'
  $ grep 'md5sum\.txt' md5sum.txt
  f9e0046389c212f1efa8b26469f844e9 ./md5sum.txt
  $ md5sum ./md5sum.txt
  c25ce4f626d23a50f57c83ad214c357b ./md5sum.txt
  $ cd
  $ eject /cdrom/

It seems that the `md5sum.txt' file includes a line which claims
to report the MD5 checksum of the file itself.
The checksum is obviously incorrect (AFAICT, it could only be correct
if one managed to converge an appropriate iterative procedure...).

I think that `md5sum.txt' MD5 checksum should not be included in
`md5sum.txt' itself...

Actually it seems that it used to be excluded in sarge CDs:

  $ mount /cdrom/
  $ cd /cdrom/
  $ grep -A 3 labeled README.txt
 This CD-ROM is labeled

   Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r0a "Sarge" - Official i386 Binary-1

  $ md5sum -c md5sum.txt
  $ grep 'md5sum\.txt' md5sum.txt
  $ cd
  $ eject /cdrom/

If I read /var/log/installer/syslog correctly, it took 2458 s:
that is the time interval between the following two log lines

Yes, even though in low memory mode.

>
> > Also note that I only installed the base system, without selecting

>
> Thank you very much for submitting the installation report. As there
> were no issues, I'm closing it.

There's a little issue, now that I think better: I don't remember seeing
any question whatsoever regarding the hardware clock.
I mean: the Debian Installer asked me to select a country and I chose
Italy.
Hence the timezone was correctly set to Rome/Paris (that, in winter,
makes CET, or +0100, if you prefer).
So far so good.

But nothing asked me whether the hardware clock was in local time or
UTC!
It was silently assumed to be UTC, which, BTW, was I what I wanted it to
be, but forgot to set accordingly in the BIOS configuration menu.

The result was that the box had the hardware clock correctly set to
local time (because I forgot to set it to UTC), but the installed system
assumed it to be set to UTC and displayed times with a +1 hour error.
I fixed the problem by setting the hardware clock to UTC in the BIOS
configuration menu, as I wanted.

But I think that the Debian Installer should ask the user whether the
hardware clock is set to local time or UTC, especially since machines
that previously had (or still have) a Windows installation typically
work with the hardware clock set to local time.

Bug#402637: harden-doc: appendix on stand-along IDS should be updated and clarified

2006-12-11 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: harden-doc
Version: 3.10
Severity: normal

Hi!

Appendix C _Setting up a stand-alone IDS_[1] has some flaws that should
be fixed.

[1] http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/securing-debian-howto/ap-snort-box.en.html

Firstoff:

| * Download and manually (with dpkg) install necessary packages
|(see installed packages list below).

There's no explanation of _why_ using dpkg manually is to be preferred
to an easy apt or aptitude run.
I would definitely use aptitude, especially since now there's secure APT,
which provides the additional bonus of checking GPG signatures...
Would I make the wrong choice?

Secondly:

| ACID is currently packaged for Debian as acidlab. It provides a
| graphical WWW interface to snort's output. It can also be
| downloaded from [...]

There's no explanation of _why_ acidlab is included in woody and
sarge, but not in etch, nor in sid (currently).
Why is the reader recommended to manually install a non-packaged
piece of software?

Then:

| You might also want to read the Snort Statistics HOWTO.

The link points to

  http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Snort-Statistics-HOWTO/index.html

which currently leads me to a sorry page by TLDP ("The document
or page you requested could not be found").

Finally, the list of packages is from woody (September 2001) and
should be updated...

I don't have a testing or unstable box handy, but, after a

  $ wget
http://ftp.it.debian.org/debian/pool/main/g/geomview/geomview_1.8.1-14_i386.deb
  $ mkdir MY
  $ dpkg-deb -x geomview_1.8.1-14_i386.deb MY/
  $ galeon -n MY/usr/share/doc/geomview/html/geomview_12.html

I can say that the problem seems to be only partially fixed in
version 1.8.1-14.

Now the images are displayed, but on the other hand, the tags that
should take care of their intended presentation (centering and the
like...) are botched.
The HTML code is something like:

   <CENTER><P>Initial
   Geomview display</CENTER>

instead of

   Initial
   Geomview display

This example is taken from the first image of
/usr/share/doc/geomview/html/geomview_12.html

Bug#402966: harden-doc: typo in bind conf change script ("many any") and suspicious example

2006-12-13 Thread Francesco Poli

Hi!

Appendix E _Sample script to change the default Bind installation_[1]
includes a script where there seems to be a typo:

|

maybe s/many/apply/ ?

Moreover the end of the appendix shows the initd file as
changed by the script (on a woody box).
Firstoff, maybe this example result should be updated to etch
(I don't know whether anything is different...).
Then, maybe I'm mistaken, but I cannot see where the changes
applied by the script are...
For instance, where are the -g and -u options?
They should appear in the start() function, shouldn't they?

Bug#403680: mayavi: fails to read blocks other than the first, in multiblock PLOT3D files [patch]

2006-12-18 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: mayavi
Version: 1.5-4
Severity: normal

Hi!

I'm unable to read any block, except the first, in multiblock
PLOT3D files.
I can reproduce this bug with any multiblock PLOT3D file having more
than one block. For instance we can consider the test case I prepared
for bug #400406 (see [1] and [2]).

[1] http://bugs.debian.org/400406
[2]
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi/vtk-multiblockPLOT3D-bug-test.tar.gz?bug=400406;msg=5;att=1

Just to recap: that test case is based on a little PLOT3D grid ('tiny.xyz')
and solution ('tiny.q'), generated by a simple Fortran program
('gen_tinyplot3d.f') on a little-endian machine.
The PLOT3D grid is composed of 5 blocks, each one of which consists
of a single cubic cell.

Steps to reproduce the bug:

  $ tar xvzf vtk-multiblockPLOT3D-bug-test.tar.gz
  $ ls
  gen_tinyplot3d.f tiny.qvtk-multiblockPLOT3D-bug-test.tar.gz
  list_plot3d.pytiny.xyz
  $ mayavi

  The main window shows up.

  * from menus, select File -> Open -> PLOT3D file -> Multi-block file
  * as XYZ Co-ordinate file, select `tiny.xyz'
  * as Q Solution file, select `tiny.q'
  * in the configuration dialog window, select, say, density and momentum,
and then click on the More Options button
  * in the detailed dialog window, check BinaryFileOn, DebugOn,
DoNotReduceNumberOfOutputsOn, HasByteCountOn, MultiGridOn; *un*check
the other checkboxes (that is to say: AbortExecuteOn, ForceReadOn,
IBlankingOn, ReleaseDataFlagOn, TwoDimensionalGeometryOn)
  * select SetByteOrderToLittleEndian and click on the Ok button
  * back in the configuration dialog window, click on the Re-read data
file button

Everything seems to work so far. Debug messages on stderr seem fine
and correctly show that there are 5 blocks.

  * click on the Set Block Number slider and try to select a block
other than the first

The expected behavior is a slider that actually moves and allows the
user to select block 1 through 5.
Instead, the slider does not move and no block but the first can be
  selected.

Now the good news: I prepared a patch (against MayaVi version 1.5)
that slightly changes the GUI in order to fix this bug.
Please consider applying the attached patch to the Debian package
and forwarding it to upstream.

Finally the legal details.
