It works a lot better after you have scrobbled for a couple of months
and gotten a clue to your listening habits. If you have neighbors with
a large library you can randomly listen to their library (what they
have scrobbled) and you can listen the same to your music after you
have built up a library there. It's kind of nice sometimes just
starting it with your library on last fm not local and letting it play.
It's basically the same idea with friends and neighbors but you pick
your friends. Recommendations are picks that last fm feels you might
like after seeing your listening habits. It gets better the more you
scrobble. Loved ones are just songs that you really like and I think it
gives more emphasis to that song or style. Sorry I'm not more in depth
but I think I'm close on all this. I just use it mainly to keep track
of what I'm listening to as it's kind of interesting. My son throws
mine off a bit but he likes a lot of the same things as me. He's 16
and it's fun getting him into music.

Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-11-14 Thread sotie

Here's my two cents after playing with squidgy for 30 minutes...

1) The only technical problem I'm encountering (SqueezeCenter 7.2) is
that everytime I start the app I get the message that "database appears
to be out of date" but nothing has changed in my database.

2) Sirius channels are wrong. Sirius changed their channel lineup
yesterday but it's not reflected in the application.

Here's what I think is missing or needs to be improved (in order of
importance to me):
- Favorites: please add if possible

- Now Playing Screen: no option to return to last screen... the only
place you can go is back to the main screen of the application. This
would be benificial when on the Now Playing screen after selecting a
song from the Artist or Album menu and then you want to go back and
browse for more tracks from the same menu. Here's another example of
how this feature would be useful: user selects the Beatles genre in
Shoutcast Radio. There are several Beatles stations available. Once
user selects a station and presses "now playing" the only option is to
go back to home screen. If user wants to check what's playing on
another Beatles station you have to go through the whole process again:
Internet Audio --> Shoutcast --> Genres --> Beatles.

- Player synchronization

Did you only replace the UI.js? Or all of them?

When I upgraded SC, I copied the contents of the SqueezeJS folder to a
sub-directory (JScript 7.2.1) and moved in the 7.3 JS's and restarted
SC. SC's web interface seems to work with no problems, at least I
haven't seen anything different or bad. Should I be? Here are
screenshots of my SC and SqueezeJS folder. Sorry for the relatively low
quality.

Did you only replace the UI.js? Or all of them?

All three -- I made a sub-directory under the SqueezeJS and moved Base,
UI and Strings to it after installing SqueezeCenter (of course
SqueezeCenter wasn't running at the time). Then I just moved the 7.3
JS's into the SqueezeJS folder and started SqueezeCenter. Web
interface works as before, just faster since moving to newer hardware.
Haven't noticed any problems in it. Maybe I got lucky?? Here are the
screenshots of the SC interface and my SqueezeJS folder for reference.

Re: [slim] How To Use Last Fm?

2008-11-14 Thread davep

Assuming you have a Lastfm account and have been scrobbling your tracks
for some time then the system at Lastfm will have 'analysed' your music
choices and identified several other folks that share some or all of
your taste - these are designated as your 'neighbours'. So if you
select play neighbours you will get a selection of music which has been
scribbled by other people who share your tastes as defined by whatever
algorithms Lastfm use to trawl through this stuff. I do this sometimes
and it can throw up some interesting tracks that I might never have
thought of listening to. And if you don't like what your neighbours do
then you can skip a track and try the next suggestion.

The other similar option is 'Play Recommended' which cues up tracks
that Lastfm think you might like. I can't really tell the difference
between 'neighbours' and recommended' to be honest - either can be
generally enjoyable and sometimes enlightening.

AFAIK 'Friends' requires some active choice by you of those others you
can find on the Lastfm site with whom you feel particularly aligned
musically (or accdeptance of their request to be your friend) and you
can then choose to listen to their specific scrobbles rather than from
the wider pool of neighbours.

[slim] How To Use Last Fm?

2008-11-14 Thread norderney

I have Last FM on the SC 7.2 web interface.

When I select it I get the following options:
My Stations
Friends (What does this option do?)
Neighbors(What does this option do?)
Start A Station
Top Tags
My Recent Tracks

If I select "Start A Station" it prompts me to Enter An Artist or Enter
A Tag. If I key in an artists name it then displays the following
options:

My Recommendations
My Radio Station
My Loved Tracks
My Neiborhood

Is it configured correctly?

For example, I entered the artist name as Queen in Start A Station,
then selected play on My Radio Station and it played a track my George
Melly!!

I have enabled the option to scrobble all tracks played to Last.fm

Re: [slim] Streaming to Windows Mobile 6.1 device

on the device you need to have a media player playing
192.168.5.254:9010/stream.mp3 to get the audio. Once you have connected
to that you can create a playlist for that player.

I don't think volume adjustment has any effect on remote streams, that
is all down to the player of the stream.

Hi,

i figured out how to change the http port (not that easy, because the
'number block' doesn't include a return button, so back to ip address
of the server and there i go) so the app doesn't crash when started.
But i have problems with repeating crashes during browsing and
'umlaute' (german) as äüö are not displayed correct (tried UTF8 and
AUTO on a SC 7.3). I get connection lost quite often when starting the
program and when i reconnect i always get back to the SBR even when i
connected to the BOOM before. Performance is OK but not very much ahead
of the controller. So for me the software is pretty much BETA. Maybe it
runs better for someone else. Oh and scanning of the database takes
some time (14000 songs take about 20 minutes).

At least give it a chanceI doubt any of the 3 apps will initially
meet everyone's requirements and we'll all have different opinions on
which is best etc.either way it is exciting times for anyone who
owns SB kit and an iPhone and gives us a new way to interact with our
kit.

I'm staying open minded on all 3 apps and have no problem in purchasing
all 3 until I make a decision on which one is besthow much did that

[slim] Streaming to Windows Mobile 6.1 device

2008-11-14 Thread Grizzly

Hi,
My first proper post so appologies if i'm missing the main facts but
i've come to a dead end!
I'm trying to stream to the above, i have followed the remote Streaming
guide from the wiki and lame is installed (library is all flac). mobile
media says receiving 320k stream. but when is select a playlist or album
no sound. My server is a HP Mediasmart WHS. SqueezeCentre is on 9010.
Observations etc:-
I can access the squeezecentre using 192.168.5.254:9010/handheld from
the mobile without a problem BUT it will not let me adjust volume
(lowest setting) or change any other status. This is also the same if
i select it from a pc and select the correct device in the top right
corner.
I have had a look at the log but not sure what i am looking for!
It seems so near yet so far?
This is all on the internal network. The next step is to stream
remoteley over the internet if anyone has some tips on what ports i
need to open and forward.
Any help wellcome.

Ps: appologies if I have posted under the wrong area.

Tony

Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-11-14 Thread Caad

This is my first impression of the Squidgy remote SW for ipod Touch.

My setup:SQ3.
mac mini, 1,8GHz 320GB/7200 HDD, 2GB Ram, OSX 10.4, Slimcenter 7.2.1

The SW is very easy to setup and getting running. It detects the server
IP. You only have to connect this IP and then do a libary scan. I have
around 1000 CDs and setup and Lib scan takes max 5min. Nice job!!!
The SW reacts very fast compaired with the safari browsed IPENG.
Actually just as fast as the Apple Remote SW. This makes the SW very
usefull to use.. :-)
But.. There is No folder search in the menu. It is only possible to
search on "artist, Album, genres.
also when playing a song from an album and wish to return to the album.
This is not possible. you can only push two bottoms. "playlist" and
"done". if you push "playlist" a playlist will show up. It is not
possible to choose an other song from this list.. If you push "done"
the you will be rolled back to the "startmenu" Here you then have to
find the album again etc..

An other bad thing is the Volume control. This is placed so you only
can control if you push on the top of the screen. the Volumecontrol
will show up. The volume control is also very sensetive and to close to
the "Off" button, that shots my SQ3 down. The menu does not allow you to
use Squeeze network.
Conclusion: I like the Gui expect for the problems above. IPENG has
these features included but the safari based GUI is to slow.

Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-11-14 Thread markbelanger

I'm intrigued but not thrilled with the price : payoff ratio. Does
anyone else believe that the remote is about 60%, but streaming is the
killer 40%? I've tried simplify (takes forever with a big library) and
tversity (video is a nice touch, but good luck if you want to listen to
X or ZZ Top!) I even bought the nullsoft radio tuner app, which is
pretty cool (costs a few bucks though) in that it lets you load a
custom URL. Leaving the app to go to a browser kills the app. Total
catch 22. Flycast had hope, in that it's a radio app WITH a web
browser option, but no custom URL streams. It feels like it's /so
close./ Also, I feel like Ipeng should get my money at this point,
he's a very active contributor, and I can probably justify 8 or 10
bucks for a remote - but I'm going to have a hard time justifying that
TIMES 3 to test them all out. Does the ipeng plugin allow control of
the playlist, or is it cue it up and go (only...)?

Good work all - enjoy nerding out in this direction and pleased
progress is afoot. Would love to see a nice streaming option for the
iphone, though.

D'oh! I should have finished reading this thread before plunking down

[slim] Constant TransNav noises are killing me!

2008-11-14 Thread TheRooster2000

Hi all!

Is it only my particular Transporter that constantly makes noises with
the TransNav device on every navigation step that I do with the IR
remote??

I always try the latest 7.2.1 nightly build of SC and the latest TP FW
but nothing helps.

Sometimes the TransNav device even makes ticking noises like a clock
every second and I can only make it stop by pushing, pulling or turning
the knob...

Will this bug be fixed in future FWs?

HELP! Or I think I have to cut the internal wires of the TransNav
device!!

Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-11-14 Thread Scott

I have been playing with it for a few hours.

SS 7.2
os x 10.4
5 players

Good:
Responsive, fairly intuitive.
Album art, volume, shuffle, repeat all work well.
Basic functioning works very well... overall much more responsive than
web based ipeng, isqueeze, etc.

Bad:
No last.fm, pandora controls for love/skip/hate.
Can't skip beyond one song at a time on the playlist.
No sync.
Slow/ troublesome interaction with internet radio streaming

Ugly:
Defaults to same player every time on startup... Even if you don't want
it to.
Crashes every so often... not completely stable.
Database status updating is quite slow (I have 10k songs)

Overall, nice first version. Will be competitive amongst our 3 (or
more?) choices for iphone based remotes.

Best,
Scott

Re: [slim] Trouble with MusicIP Headless, SC7.3, and Sugarcube

2008-11-14 Thread ob_kook

I changed everything to 10003 (the MIP GUI port) and re-started the API
services on MIP GUI, but still SugarCube is not working.

To verify if it is a blocked port somewhere, I have temporarily
disabled both my AV and Firewall.

Since the Mip headless is working (songs verified and mixable match the
MIP GUI, and I can do a test mix), I am going to concentrate on that. I
switched everything back to port 10002 in order to match that.

I'm doing a full rescan and will see if the disabled AV and FW have an
effect.

Some settings to check if you are having problems are tucked away under
'Advanced' in the server settings screen.

It appears that some of the NAS builds use a different HTTP port by
default, so please check this and the CLI port if you are having
problems connecting.

If you have problems scanning, try setting the 'charset' value to utf8
and see if that helps. This shouldn't be needed on recent 7.3 server
builds.

Support email address is "squidgy AT emccsoft DOT com", please email
problems to us as well as posting them here, then we can track them
better.

OK, a little late with today's image, so I'll do a few :-)
I DID plan top only give you the splash screen, yet...

Actually I found out a few annoying things today:

#1 I can design slick Apps, I can even make them look cool, but I
obviously CANNOT design icons, So if anybody has a cool suggestion out
there :-)

#2 is even worse: iPeng is ready for the App store, It's done, it has
all the help stuff set up, I even have marketing blabla, but I cannot
get it compiled for the AppStore? Why? My company name has an "!" in it
and the code signing doesn't eat that. I am not allowed to change the
registered entity myself so now I've got Apple headquarters tying to
sort out what to do :-(
Not kidding.
Note to self - only ever use ASCII characters. Wait a moment, that IS
an ASCII character... hm... A-Z?

But ok, here's the pictures. I admit that the Squwhatever app has some
cooler looks to it but ours doesn't crash on startup :-)

2008-11-14 Thread MeSue

There is clear contact paper. I have some but it is a little bit
frosted, which you might not like.

Or how about a strip of clear packing tape? Might be hard to remove
though.

I know I have seen cut-your-own sheets of screen protector material in
office supply stores here in the US. If you can't find something like
that maybe a craft store wold have some kind of adhesive vinyl.

Or get a laptop screen protector and cut it down.

with (eg Last.FM, Live music archive) and the radio streams etc all
work, so as long as the server returns the same format data for

Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-11-14 Thread socistep

Hi All,

Just quick from me as I have to shoot to the girlfriends place and I'm
late :-) I probably haven't looked at all the functionality

Music scan

Takes a bit of time but not too bad, I noticed from the first scan that
some of my most recent added albums weren't there but Squidgy popped up
with a message saying it was out of date and they came up on a re-scan,
a minor irritant

Browsing

There is a slight lag in loading album artwork but generally it is
quick and the artwork looks good

Main Menu

I like this, gives all the options in a similar set-up to the
controller, its great to see some of the iPhone features being able to
be used on a SB set-up such as the scrolling and use of touch keyboard
on a search.

-Albums
Not so sure on the horizontal album view, looks very cluttered to me
and I would stick to the vertical view, however I do like clicking on
the album and the tracks coming up similar to how the iPod works. Not
sure why this doesn't do this on the vertical view ?
-Artists
Seems to be some differences to the SB set-up in terms of Various
Artists being under 'V' as opposed to the top and also if an artist is
in a compilation that album is included under the artist, would be good
to configure that
- Internet Audio
Looks good, haven't really had much of a play but noticed that there
isn't an entry for my favourites

Now Playing/Playlist

I actually like this and the way it looks, I like the way that
playlists can be viewed and managed and this IMO is easier then on the
controller

Summary

>From first impression its looks good and is the kind of app I was
hoping we would get for the iPhone, I will be interested to see how it
compares to the other 2 and will no doubt purchase all 3 then make a
final decision - As I mentioned I've only had a quick look and haven't
tried it over a longer period so will send some further thoughts
through.

Best go, the Dog is getting ready to eat my tea...

Cheers
Ian

I agree. However, most people compare data-transfer speed by looking at
the differences between USB, Firewire, SCSI, SATA etc. without looking
at the drive's sustained transfer-rate specs. You might need a whole
bunch of disks in raid config to fill up the controller bandwidth. The
only significance of this for SB/SC is when making a back-up of the
music. During regular use of the products, any interface will do.

cheers,
Nick.

I really hope this would be the case. Development could be fairly quick
for this as well as it is a spec bump as opposed to a new product.

The SB3 is a testament to well designed hardware. Three and a half
years so far with a redesign and then a few tweeks to the case is
pretty exceptional for consumer electronics these days.

you know that "screen protector" is just fo shipping right? You are
meant to take it off :)

I would be surprised if you couldn't find large sheets of generic
screen protector that you could cut with a craft knife. I have never
seen custom ones for an SB3, as it isn't designed to be a portable
device, there isn't really a need for this.

I take it that you mean Tuner is the only legit app for streaming *over
the internet*.

I am not even sure if that is correct, but there are certainly other
apps for streaming locally, which is enabling me to use my iTouch as a
portable player around my apartment.

But I would be interested to know (maybe I should start another thread

it(ideally available in the UK)?

More reliable? No (unless you count sitting in the listening seat 12'
away from the SB3 trying to change the music ;-). The Controller
simply offers a far better way of controlling the music from wherever
you are. Before I got the controller, I would accomplish the same thing
via my laptop computer and SqueezeCenter.

With the winter months ahead, I will admit that the Controller does not
keep me nearly as warm as my laptop does, but the Controller still wins
on convenience.

Maybe just encode each DVD to a single xvid or divx file. It's not
lossless, but then neither is the original DVD. Quality is good and
you'll save a ton of space. They are easy to stream over a network and
can be played on any modern DVD player or computer.

SB4 could use the same form factor and display, but upgrade the CPU,
memory, and DAC. 24/96!

It's been around while too. With price/stock issues, no new forum like
the Duet got and talk of the SB3 hitting limits in what can be done
with its firmware make me think the end could be near.

What i hope is they bring an enhanced version out, with the same great
design and screen.

Re: [slim] FLAC format for videos?

2008-11-14 Thread luuk

I still think it is shortsighted of the SB people not to consider
putting together an SB that can handle video as well. I would also be
happy with SqueezeCenter streaming video and audio to say a Popcorn
Hour. What I am trying to avoid (because it is giving me lots of
problems) is having to run two or even three servers (I now have to run
SC for my SB2, Twonky for flac music to the homecinema (Denon 4306) and
TVersity also to the homecinema but to the PS3 mainly for video (who
wants to listen to anything except hardrock with the PS3 blazing in the
background). Getting these three to work smoothly together has been a
real head-ache.

Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-11-14 Thread danny041

Ok, bought it and tried it. Just so you don't think I am posting as a
bought fanboi or anything for the app or for some of the other apps
competing: I am not.

First impression. Easy to set up, with autosearch it finds the player
and you are alive and kickin in a couple of minutes after the app has
scanned your library.

The interface works really quick and it is actually a Major difference
compared to iPeng's web-interface. For me, this is The Major Thing for
using a 3rd party remote like the iphone. I think this is the case for
most of us out there longing for the iphone to be utilized as the best
remote imaginable for the squeezebox.

With this said, and expected from my side, I don't really like the "Now
playing" interface. First of all i don't like that the controls and
elapsed time is constantly there. My personal view is that the more
similar you can make it to the Itunes interface, the more natural and
user friendly it would be to use the app. My intuitive approach is
trying to sweep the cover to left or right to get to different menues
and trying to tap the screen to invoke/remove the control buttons etc.
Now neither of this works, rather i have to push the playlist or tap
the screen to get a rather "not so useful" menu as a pop-down. I also
would like to be able to forward/rewind on the time-progress-bar for
the song in the same way i can increase/decrease the volume by dragging
the volume bar left/right.

I would also like the multiplayer approach to be improved. As far as i
understand this function is not available? I would like to check the
squeezeboxes i want to see simultaneously controls for. (if i for
example have 5 SB's i would like to be able to check/uncheck some of
them to have control over the ones i choose simultaneously). Actually,
when looking around i don't find any setting for synchronizing players
at all, but i have only used the program for 15 mins now so don't take
my points as some kind of 100% accurate judgement.

This was my initial thoughts after short usage of the program. The more
i think of it, the more two points pop up as the most important onces.
Quick navigation and response, which this app is doing great so far.
The other thing is quick and easy support for navigating/synchronizing
multiple squeezeboxes. So far I don't see/understand how this is done
in this app.

That's been my experience too - it's the code, database engine and the
server hardware that are the constraining factors.

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal...SB3+Stontronics PSU - Altmann
JISCO/UPCI - TACT 2.2X (Linear PSU) + Good Vibrations S/W - MF

hmmm - yes I meant 150 not 250.
Many preamps with split-rail supplies use +/-12v so max swing is
(theoretically) 24 v pk-pk...

I think that these days most line inputs are set to 500mV sensitivity,
with a proper CD input being at 2V.

Anyway, 187mV is too low for a CD or squeezebox. It will need an
attenuator in-line to avoid overloading the input stage IMHO, depending
on its gain staging and overload margin (headroom).
