dBi or dBd? If dBi not impressive. My 20m antenna
produces 19 dBi and it´s by no means IMO very big,
just a 5 over 5 yagi stack.

Hi guys,
Just a point here. Can you think of *any* company who would make
schematics and diagrams available in the public domain before the
equipment has been released? I am astonished at what Aptos have
released so far, I would not have done so. The K3 is a major step into
the Amateur Radio market and you can bet your bottom dollar that the big
3 (and others) will be very interested indeed to see how it all goes
together.

Let's be patient, it won't be long now :-)

[Elecraft] 6 meters - need info (OT?)

2007-09-27 Thread Darwin, Keith
This relates to my consideration of purchasing a K3.

I know NOTHING about 6 meters. I'm an HF op who does CW and some SSB.
What I believe about 6 meters comes from my (limited) experience on 10
meters. I'm expecting that 6 is mostly closed but has occasional
openings, provided you're not at a sunspot low. I'm assuming the
successful 6 meter operator has to be watching propagation and has to
pick their operating time. I assume it is a hit or miss band and that
you don't have any fun up there unless you put in the time and happen to
catch it when it is open. I'm assuming the same effort put into to 10
meters would produce more QSOs.

Like I say, I know NOTHING. Someone please educate me. If you're reply

[Elecraft] K rig's longevity?

2007-09-27 Thread Darwin, Keith
I had an interesting QSO last night. K9TTM, very sweet CW call. He was
running a Collins S-line and SB200 amp. His keyer was a homebuilt unit
from the 1960s. paddles were Vibrokeyers. His tuner was a Johnson
Matchbox. In other words, his whole station was classic - vintage
stuff. I mentioned it and he said it got old by itself. It was new
when I bought it 35 yrs ago HI HI.

And that got me thinking.

In 35 years will be still be running our K3s and K2s? For that matter
are any rigs being built today going to be considered useful 30 yrs from
now? As I ponder the question, I come to the answer of no. I believe
they won't be but not because of any deficiency in the gear. On the
contrary, I suspect the K3 / K2 rigs just as durable and able to
continue operations for many decades, probably more. I believe they
won't be applicable in the future because we as a group of hams have
shifted our thoughts. We're largely caught up with getting the next
thing. We're expecting gear to change yearly and are prone to dump what
we have and upgrade. With that mentality, there is no rig that will
stand the test of time because we won't keep it.

I know I'm part of the problem here. My K2 is 1.5 yrs old and I'm
considering selling to get a K3. The oldest piece of gear in my shack
is my MFJ antenna analyzer and that is about 3 yrs old. Everything else
is either new or is something I've bought in the last couple of years.
I just don't stick with anything for long. Oh wait, I take that back.
The aluminum from which I built my vertical antenna is about 10 yrs old.

As K9TTM and I chatted back and forth I was thinking about how it would
be to keep the same rig for decades. To always have that old friend
ready to go. I listened to his signal and thought about relay-based
semi break-in. I thought about tube warm-up. I thought about tuning
finals. I thought about 1000 Hz side tone. I listened to his signal
and adjusted my RIT to match his drift. I then looked at my K2 and was
VERY happy to not be running an old classic rig.

That silly little kit on my desk which cost far less than the S-Line
when new, works much better and has more features that Art Collins could
have dreamed of.

Re: [Elecraft] 6 meters - need info (OT?)

2007-09-27 Thread Julian G4ILO
Keith, I think your assumptions are pretty close to the mark. 6 is
mostly closed except during the summer months when there are
occasional sporadic-E openings giving 59++ contacts over distances up
to 1,000 miles (sometimes more, with double-hop) even when using low
power. As the name suggests, these openings are completely
unpredictable, except they occur during a season of a couple of months
or so centered around mid-June, and more often than not occur during
the day when most people are at work. They are great fun when you
catch one, though.

The number of sporadic-E openings in a year doesn't seem much affected
by the solar cycle. Regular openings like you get on the lower bands
obviously are, but the MUF is rarely high enough to support 6m
propagation even during the solar maximum, so even when 10m may be
workable, 6m often is not. You do have to be dedicated and watch for
such openings to catch them, even more than for sporadic-E.

The same effort put in to 10m probably would produce more QSOs, though
I've often found 6m busy during a Sporadic-E opening when 10m is dead.
That may be because 6m has its own dedicated fans, many of whom only
work VHF. To them, the kind of distances workable via Sporadic-E are
DX, whereas to the HF DXer they are short skip, local and not very
interesting.

I also don't know anything about 6 meters, but heard the broadcast
engineers over in Philadelphia used it and had a repeater on it.
Maybe it can work like CB over short range?

The 756 pro had 6 meters I think, but I never tried it, I don't
have any short antenna's for 10, 11, or 6 meters, and never hear anything
up there when I listen on the long antenna's.

There is also a LOT of bandwidth to tune to listen for any signals...

Even 15 seems dead, I remember making a lot of contacts on 15 with my
hw7, I even put up a 3 element 15 meter beam, what fun working NJ
to Wyoming solid copy on 3 watts.

Its all the sunspot cycle I supposeor will people forget those
bands and they will be empty even if open?

[Elecraft] Re: K rig's longevity?

2007-09-27 Thread Steven Pituch

Hi Keith and all,
When I got my K2 (#402) built I guess in about 1999, it was only a curiosity
and sat next to my TS850 for about a year. I finally started doing some A/B
tests and soon after, the TS850 was the radio that was collecting dust. Had
somewhat of a financial adjustment a couple of years ago, and sold all of my
ham gear except the K2. Then when I got some cash I upgraded it and put
in the amp, tuner, and dsp.

I don't miss the TS850 or the other rigs I sold too much. I think that if I
had sold the K2 I would have kicked myself later on. If you like any rig a
lot I would say don't sell it to get another rig, because if it is really
good you will miss it. It is better to get the new radio and then use both
rigs awhile. Then because of the comparison you can decide later if the old
rig is worth keeping.

When I get a K3, my K2 will be for portable use. I may sell some of the
options but never the base K2. I think finding some of the lower serial
number K2s for sale is a rarity. Sort of like that Collins S line, or Drake
C line. ;). Come to think of it, now that the K3 is out, the K2 is sorta
vintage.

Meteor scatter

tropospheric ducting

All of these produce some significant openings. The apparent randomness of
the openings is why 6 is refered to as the Magic Band (IMHO). I have

The older one becomes, the less important new is.

Can't begin to remember all the radios I've owned during

We traded our 1st VW bug in because it had 22K miles on

I remember trying a different wire antenna every few days/weeks,
looking for that magic one that was better than the last. Took me
years to realize that any apparent differences were most likely
due to how good propagation was on a particular day. (;-) I've
had my 80M Zepp in the air for at least 30 years

RE: [Elecraft] K rig's longevity?

2007-09-27 Thread Darwin, Keith
I plan. Boy David, I hear you. The K2 is my dream rig. Great
performance at a low price. It is my choice over every other rig out
there. Period. I plan to keep it and use it and continue to love it.

Then Elecraft brings out this K3 thing. And my plan gets pulled out
from under my feet. When I get a K3 I'm sure it will keep me very happy
... until Elecraft comes out with the K4.

I'm not hooked. I can stop anytime. Really.

*sigh*

But who knows, something new from Elecraft, could likely change my

Hi Keith,

I know the KPA100 can be put in an EC2 enclosure to make a stand-alone
linear for the K2. Could that same stand-alone unit be used with the
 K3/10 to get 100 watts?

This has been discussed before - check the archives - and the answer was afaik
no.

Or could the KPA3 be put in an external case and used with a K2?

I highly doubt it.

I very much agree. I use my K1 for mobile operating and will likely never

old it becomes, just that it works and works well.

I will likely take the K3 plunge at some point in time, however, I'll never

[Elecraft] S/N3068 Getting closer!

2007-09-27 Thread KBG Luxford
Tonight I finished the RF board and soldered in the three connectors for
the SSB board which is not yet assembled. With a signal generator, all
the slug tuned transformers and the six trimmers have been touched up.

Great to hear some real live SSB and CW signals on 80 m.

However, I am puzzled by a rapid fire switching from VFO to menu and
back again - several times per second. May be a fault on the front
panel display board. I have another, so will try that tomorrow after a
good sleep.

Thanks to Gary and the people on this reflector who have offered good
advice and invaluable encouragement.

And much more.

Don't forget

Aurora

Auroral E

Ionoscatter

F2

And mixed mode!

6 is HIGHLY addictive!!!

From GM I ran 2 x 7 ele long yagis and 400w and regularly used to work
100-150 + US stns during F2 openings!

Many using dipoles and 100w inside rooms!

I am small fry - 138 countries on the band but many of the big guys are 200
countries+

And you can work some real DX - JA/VK etc

In terms of openings - SpE can be kind of hit and miss but many opening such
as F2, Au, AuE, Iono etc you can predict with some skills on the band.

Best place to see what is happening is on the UK six metre pages UKSMG

Have fun but be warned its very addictive and once tried you wont want to
give it up

WARNING! 6 meters is addicitive! Once you work an E opening you will be
hooked for life.

You have received a lot of good info on 6 already. I will not repeat it.
Chasing grid squares is a lot of fun. You have several interesting
propagation modes on 6.

Meteor scatter

sproadic e

tropospheric ducting

All of these produce some significant openings. The apparent randomness of
the openings is why 6 is refered to as the Magic Band (IMHO). I have
worked into europe with a dipole and 100 watts (cw ssb) from EL29lm
(Houston, TX) as well as 38 states!

Good luck,

This relates to my consideration of purchasing a K3.

I know NOTHING about 6 meters. I'm an HF op who does CW and some SSB.
What I believe about 6 meters comes from my (limited) experience on 10
meters. I'm expecting that 6 is mostly closed but has occasional
openings, provided you're not at a sunspot low. I'm assuming the
successful 6 meter operator has to be watching propagation and has to
pick their operating time. I assume it is a hit or miss band and that
you don't have any fun up there unless you put in the time and happen
to catch it when it is open. I'm assuming the same effort put into to
10 meters would produce more QSOs.

Like I say, I know NOTHING. Someone please educate me. If you're
reply is long, e-mail me off-list since this topic is mostly OT.

Activity is historically sparse for this contest, only 17 logs were

and make some noise. I'll be on with my puny 20W from the XV50 with
no expectations other than to make at least one QSO. If more, all the

Kevin,

I believe you will find the problem on the Control Board rather than the
Front Panel. The Front Panel only displays what the microprocessor on
the Control Board tells it.

If you have another K2, you can quickly determine if the control board
is at fault by temporarily swapping them.

Probably a typo, but should be corrected. :-) 6M sporadic-E propagation
peaks around the SOLSTICES (June and December), not the equinoxes. There is
rarely ever any sporadic-E propagation around the equinoxes.

The summer Es season in North America typically runs from mid-May through
mid-August, with the southeast US getting some early sporadic-E openings by
late April. The winter Es season, in which the openings are typically less
numerous and weaker than during summer, extends from roughly late November
through mid-January. Sporadic-E can occur at any time, but it is extremely
rare from mid-February through mid-April and from mid-September through
mid-November in North America.

There is a tremendous amount to be learned about 6 meter propagation. It is
the only band we have where ALL known radio propagation modes (and probably a
few unknown ones) can be experienced at one point or another. It is truly a
mix of HF and VHF characteristics.

[Elecraft] 6 meters - need info (OT?)

2007-09-27 Thread Phil Debbie Salas
Six meters is VERY addictive. I started back in the late 60's with a
Lafayette 1-watt AM transceiver (HA-650), and worked all over the country
and even down into South America with just a squalo antenna on my Dad's
chimney in MD when the band would open. Now I just use a 6-meter dipole,
and I monitor six as much as I can. There have been some great openings
this summer - and you can find plenty of SSB and CW when the band opens.
Looking forward to the K3 where I can leave the second receiver on the SSB
calling frequency (50.125). I have a friend who has DCXX and WAC on 6
meters from here in the Dallas area.

Re: [Elecraft] 6 meters - need info (OT?)

2007-09-27 Thread Bill W5WVO

Hi Tony,

Good to hear you are using HFTA. Excellent tool.

It's all about takeoff angle, which is determined by (a) the kind of
antenna(s) you are using, (b) their height above ground, (c) the terrain
characteristics, and (d) frequency. What takeoff angle you need is in turn
dictated by the kind of propagation you are using and the path distance.

A single 6M yagi at 82' will have several deep nulls in its elevation profile,
as HFTA is undoubtedly telling you. For sporadic-E propagation, you will want
to be able to cover takeoff angles from 0 up through around 16 or 18 degrees
elevation, which will cover single-hop path lengths from the theoretical
maximum single-hop distance (1400-1450 miles) down to around 350-400 miles.

You need those higher takeoff angles mostly for sporadic-E propagation. When
the F2 comes back in four or five years, it is unlikely that you will need a
takeoff angle much higher than 0 degrees because the band will be at or just
below the F2 MUF, placing the critical angle of refraction close to the
visible horizon. It will be an extremely rare (though not impossible)
occurrence to have an F2 path on 6M with shorter than the maximum possible
skip distance. Shorter skip is likely to be sporadic-E, which can and does
coexist with F2 during solar maxima.

Therefore, if you have no interest in working grid squares over shorter path
distances of 400-1000 miles or so (plus any multi-hop Es paths that may be
comprised of these shorter hops), you needn't worry about covering the higher
takeoff angles. But that's really where most of the fun is on 6M IMHO, and to
cover all the bases for sporadic-E, you definitely need to have a solution for
covering those takeoff angles. This can be done either through phasing of
stacked arrays, as modeled in HFTA, and/or by placing one or more antennas
closer to ground. Just trust HFTA to give you the best configuration for what
you want to do.

Had a lot of fun in June working many Europeans and Caribbean

I do have a question for you 6M aficionados. Hopefully this isn't too
far off the normal intent of this reflector. I have 6 el at 82'. I
can also put a 6 el beam at 47'. HFTA says that will help me.
My questions are:
- I have heard a rumor that 6M beams don't work too well when
side-mounted. Is this true?
- Since I am not yet familiar with all the types of propagation on
6M, are there rules of thumb for high and low antennas? Do you think
I am too high at 47' and 82'? Do I need a lower antenna also like on
10M for when the sunspots are high again?

If this is too far off normal topics on this band, please respond
directly.

Probably a typo, but should be corrected. :-) 6M sporadic-E
propagation peaks around the SOLSTICES (June and December), not the
equinoxes. There is rarely ever any sporadic-E propagation around the
equinoxes.

The summer Es season in North America typically runs from mid-May
through mid-August, with the southeast US getting some early
sporadic-E openings by late April. The winter Es season, in which the
openings are typically less numerous and weaker than during summer,
extends from roughly late November through mid-January. Sporadic-E
can occur at any time, but it is extremely rare from mid-February
through mid-April and from mid-September through mid-November in
North America.

There is a tremendous amount to be learned about 6 meter propagation.
It is the only band we have where ALL known radio propagation modes
(and probably a
few unknown ones) can be experienced at one point or another. It is
truly a mix of HF and VHF characteristics.

[Elecraft] Single Lever Paddle Follow Up

2007-09-27 Thread Jack Regan
Thanks for all the input re: single lever paddles.

Since I had just recieved my 15 wpm endorsement for the ARRL Certificate of
Proficiency (obtained at 10 wpm) I decided to treat myself to a single lever
paddle. I got a good deal on a Kent SP-1 on eBay and made the deal.

I love it. It works and looks great. I have been using a chrome Bencher Iambic
and it works just fine. It even works well as a single lever paddle. Just
don't squeeze it!

I hooked the Kent up to both my Kenwood TS-570D and my KX1. The Kenwood
appears to have only an iambic A mode and my KX1 was set for mode A. The Kent
worked fine on both rigs.

I then set the KX1 to iambic B and expected to lose the squeeze function, as in
mode A, but still get the opposite dash or dot as the case may be, when I
held the dot or dash past the half way point. This did not happen. I did
not think this could be because the KX1 knew I had a single lever paddle but
I tested this with my Bencher and got the same results. Anybody have an idea?

It seems a constant reminder is again in order:

The good guys could have waited until next week AFTER half of us spent our
annual ham budget on an Orion or FT-2000,etc and put up an ad FlashNew K3
from Elecraft has arrived. Order yours now for immediate delivery, just
$2299 + tax and shipping, all manuals included with delivery

Any prediction on the list traffic following that?

[Elecraft] APP Jaws of Crimp

2007-09-27 Thread k7hbg
Hi everybody;
A while ago I'd swear I saw a reference to an add. for APP ratchet
crimper Jaws only. These were meant to be used in the universal
crimping handles now widely available all over the place.
Can anybody give me a pointer in this direction?

Regards, Bob K7HBG

Re: [Elecraft] S/N3068 Getting closer!

2007-09-27 Thread KBG Luxford

Hi Don,
Well as it transpired, I could not go to bed without swapping front
panel display boards. The replacement board provides a rock solid
display - no spurious flicking into Menu mode and back again. So it
into the display board with a microscope to examine systematically every
soldered joint!

Many thanks for your advice. Will keep the group posted.

Much complaining, of course.
Yes, for some people, this is the best of both worlds- if you didn't
get a new rig just before Visalia (1), you knew what to spend your
budget on after; and if you did buy one, you've got a new rig to use in the
mean time.

(1) I came really close to buying one of the IC756 PRO III's that we
used on N8S, but since ICOM didn't give us a good deal, so I got to
Visalia ready for a new rig, but uncommitted. By Friday evening,
I was committed.

OTOH, the wait has me in limbo- I'm not working on the station much or
even operating much, at least partly because I'm waiting for the K3.
This is irrational, because I've got much work I could be doing
anyway, like work on a linear for both home and away; replacing my
antenna array at home; and several DXpedition antenna projects (even
with no trip scheduled).
