[expert] KDE Install Location
I just noticed that Mandrake installs KDE to the same place that Redhat does (duh!). Putting KDE under /usr (among others) is inconvenient for me for a variety of reasons, among which are the necessity to resize partitions, and installing non-mandrake/redhat KDE rpms. I first thought I'd wait until after the Mandrake installation to install the KDE packages and use the new RPM redirection feature. However, the base installation directory for KDE is not necessarily /usr, so replaceing /usr with /opt/kde would not work 100%. I'd also like to change the GNOME install to /opt/gnome in addition. Does anyone have a nice and easy work-around for this problem? -- Arandir... ___ http://www.meer.net/~arandir/

On Wed, 09 Jun 1999, Jeremy Lunn wrote: hi, I have noticed that when I delete icons that are on the Desktop... next time I start KDE they are there again... How can I get rid of them permanently? There is a directory /opt/kde/skel that contains the standard desktop icons. If a standard icon is erased, then it will be recreated from this directory. Just delete or rename this directory and this will never happen again. Redhat moved this directory to /etc/skel if you can't find it. -- Arandir... ___ http://www.meer.net/~arandir/

On Sat, 05 Jun 1999, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I did a complete reformat and install of M6 and must say, what works looks good. Problem is no sound (SBAWE 64), no scsi card (sym53c416). Both of these worked fine in M5.3. I have upgraed the init scripts and kernel which has changed nothing. Has any one run accross a fix for this behavior? A friend of mine with a SBAWE 64 card found the exact same situation with RH5.2 versus RH6.0. He said that he recompiled the kernel and that worked. What is the name of the the M5.3 SBAWE module? Is it still available under M6.0? I don't know myself, but in my RH box, under /lib/modules/blah/blah/blah, there is a "awe_wave.o" module. If that's it, then recompiling the kernel won't do much. But if it isn't then recompiling will make the proper driver for you. -- Arandir... ___ http://www.meer.net/~arandir/
Re: [expert] Change windows manager within KDE 1.1
On Tue, 27 Apr 1999, Royce Teo wrote: how do I change the desktop manager in KDE 1.1. I would like to switch to afterstep. I have backed up the Xclients xinitrc files. then made a new xinitrc file just to use afterstep. BUT when I change back to KDE. the x server would not connect. There are programs out there that let you choose between window managers at startup. They may be what you need to keep track of the init files. kwm is great but its not as exciting as afterstep or gnome where u can change the theme. it's just 2 windoze-like. For once, just once, I wish someone would explain to me how kde/kwm is windows-like but nothing else is. In any case, you do have themes in KDE. Let me repeat. You do have themes in KDE. Direct any questions to kde.themes.org is it possible to switch desktop manager from within kwm itself? Thanks. I'm still not sure what you mean by desktop manager. Are you referring to a window manager? If so, you have to logout of kwm, just like you do with every other window manager. If you mean, can you run GNOME from within kwm, I believe you can. -- Arandir... ___ http://www.meer.net/~arandir/
