Stafford Driving clinic

2011-05-15 Thread Phillip Odden

Hello Folks from Phillip Odden in Northwestern Wisconsin where we
are experiencing our first thunder storm of the season. I can hear
Thor and his powerful chariot banging away in the heavens as I write.

Last weekend our Northwoods driving club hosted the second Suzy
Stafford driving clinic. We have a wonderful driving club composed
of members with diverse interests in the driving world. And there is
every kind of horse pony or mini imaginable but not too many highly
bred animals. Our club members come from Northern Wisconsin and
Northern Minnesota. We are used to making do, improvising and
getting along. But our members do very well in ADS CDE and Pleasure
Driving competitions in the Midwest and in other regions when we
travel. Our Northwood harness club members have proven we can play
with the best of 'em. And now we are inviting First Class driving
instructors to our area. There were three and one half days of
lessons booked. Suzy Stafford was able to speak to each and every
driver and horse on a level they could understand so as to make
improvements for their individual goals.

The problems were often the same. If the horse was not able to relax
it was often a problem with the bit or rough or busy hands with the
driver. Many horses were afraid of bit contact and drivers were
challenged to understand proper contact. Often the horses had
problems coming round without relaxation and proper contact. For
many they needed better rhythm in their gaits. After that there
were horses that were not bending well, mostly because the drivers
did not know how to help their horses bend. There was a lot of
inside- outside rein instruction. Not easy if you haven't been
exposed to it. After that there were some horses that were not
engaging their rear ends so they lacked impulsion.

I brought my 6 year old Red Dun gelding Frode sired by my stallion
Smedsmo and out of a mare I used to own Woods Karina. I called her
Raude since she was red. Smedsmo's mother was red. Now I have a full
sister to Raude named Eirose and she is red as well and she scored
an 81 in conformation. I have two full red dun brothers from Eirose
and by Smedsmo and they look just like Frode with darker red coats
and very light colored mane and full white tails. Frode is very
striking because of his well muscled body and his contrasting coat
color. And Frode is very athletic. He is fit and trim even in his
winter coat. Frode is shorter in his body frame, more compact and
stands about 14 HH. He brings lots of comments because of his
presence and athletic ability. It is easy to see.

I have been training Frode for about 16 month single and in pairs. I
drove him single for Suzy this past weekend. I can say that all my
pair horses drive single and none of them have any problem driving
single since I school them as singles and I switch them back and
forth from one side to the other in several different pair
combinations. Currently I have 7 or 8 horses that I can take to ADS
driving shows that drive single and in pairs.

Frode is a very calm horse and it takes a lot to get him rattled.
Suzy's first comment as I drove him into the ring was that he could
walk. He has a big natural over-stride at the walk. He had good
rhythm in his gaits, he could bend well both ways and he had the
proper flexion in his neck and head and he could easily come round.
He held his gaits well. She liked his steady working trot. Frode was
soft in the mouth and responsive. After a few minutes she stopped
the lesson to say that she didn't often see Fjords that could move
like Frode. Since all the basics were in place she asked what I
wanted to work on.

I asked her to show me how she works to get lengthening at the trot.
She drove as I watched her chase him from a working trot to the
lengthened trot by building impulsion from the rear with more energy
and holding him the front end closed. When she drove she kept his
face on the vertical so he reached up under with the hind legs and
shot the front legs forward. I think she was schooling a more
advanced lengthening than I was was looking for, but Frode seemed to
be capable, if only for 2 to 5 strides. When I drove him for her I
let him lengthen his body a bit as well since this is what most
judges have suggested should happen at Prelim level. In the past I
had been asking for lengthening from a more collected trot or I had
chased a horse on an open road into rounding up and lengthening. But
I have had trouble in Dressage tests in getting a solid quick
transition across the diagonal which is what seems to be required.
So now I will school in a different way. But it sure helps if you
have a horse with the conformation and natural ability to do this
stuff.

On behalf of the Northern Illinois Horse Driving Club, it is with much
regret that I must announce that the driving clinic with Phil Odden
scheduled for April 9 10th must be cancelled. Do to circumstances beyond
our control we will not be able to have it after all. I know that I, and
many others are very disappointed about it. Phil has a lot to offer and we
were hoping to take advantage of his knowledge. Perhaps another time. We are
sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

The Northern Illinois Horse Driving Club will be hosting a driving clinic on
April 9th and 10th. The clinician will be our own Phillip Odden. As most of
you know, Phil is a very accomplished horseman. He takes his horses out west
to use them hunting, he uses them to do farm work, such as, harvesting maple
syrup. In addition to this, he has done very well in the show ring in
pleasure shows and the CDE circuit. Phil and his pair of Fjords were
invited to put on a demonstration at the World Equestrian Games.

Participants will be able to bring their horse and have a private lesson
with Phil. Each lesson is 55 minutes long. The lessons are $80 for our
members. $85 for non-members. (The annual membership is $5.) Or you can
audit for the weekend for $30 (for members) or $35 (for non-members).

The clinic will be held indoors (or outdoors if the weather is nice) at the
Ross Arena 9660 E. Montague Road, in German Valley, IL 61037. We will have
vendors set up and vendor space is available. A food stand will be on the
grounds with donuts and lunch for sale.

Whether you show or just go down the road with your horse, this is your
chance to improve your driving skills, gain knowledge or work on a problem
you may be having. Whether you drive a draft, mini, or something in between,
we invite you to join us for what will be a weekend of fun. For more
information or to register, please email me at: antietamf...@dishmail.net

in Morongo Valley. It is a little gem of a place nestled in a desert canyon -
so I am optimistic the weather will be nice down there!

We have room for 1 or 2 more horses over the weekend, and of course more
auditors are welcome. if there is the need, I am open to adding in Monday,
Jan. 11th as well.
I will be bringing a lot of driving draft equipment to use
for 'show tell' and to share during the clinic, so if you are
worried about not having the right equipment, don't fret!
feel free to contact me if you have questions,

Howdy Folks, We had our first meeting for the 17th Annual
International
Fjord Horse Show last week. Some of the folks thought It would be good
to
have a clinic during the year to help some of us get prepared for the
show and
for our own pleasure. We all want a safe situation working with our
fine
horses, and I think a clinic would be a real bonus for us. So, I am
going to
try to get this together early so we can get plenty of members on board.
I
have Brian Jensen lined up to do the clinic. We have not picked a date
as yet
until we know how many folks can attend and the best dates for them.
Sometime
in late spring is what we thought, say late June or ? Let us know
either by
snail mail or E-mail if you may be interested. The clinic will focus on
taking a pair of horses that have done a fair amount of driving single
and
pairing them up. There will be some class room and some in the arena.
More
details will be available as we get this better organized. We just need

Hi Jan

Do you have a foal yet? I keep expecting each day to see the birth posted
on the list. Our mare is beginning to develop an udder. She sure is huge -
looks like a pot bellied pig! I am beginning to act like an anxious mother.
I have been quite calm all winter, but as the time approaches, my worries are
going up.

Read your list advertisement of the driving clinic and have a few questions.
If we bring both of our horses, what is the per day charge. We would only
be driving one at a time. Also, if I wanted to trade off and let my husband
take a turn at driving, would there be a separate charge for him?

We had over an inch of rain yesterday and some marble sized hail. But, I
guess we were lucky. Bedford city, about 1/2 hr away had a tornado or
something akin to one hit the downtown area.

Hope all is well with you, your family and of course, horses.

We greatly enjoyed and benefitted from the clinic. In response to your
sensitive horse inquiry, there was one very sensitive yet talented welsh
pony at the clinic. Olaf felt the owner didn't push him (the pony) enough
and hence wasn't really tapping into his abilities. The owner was in effect
letting the ponies sensitivities back her off. We watched as Olaf drove the
pony in lovely canter serpentines with flying changes across the center

lives in the same little place I grew up in Norway. I remember seeing him
driving his Oldenburg four-in hand which was impressive. Now he only trains
horses and teaches driving, without having horses of his own. He seems to be
a great driver and teacher, the only negative thing I've heard is that he
can be a little too dominant with extremely sensitive horses.

Olaf Nyby Driving Clinic

2001-05-22 Thread Lori Albrough
This message is from: Lori Albrough [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks to Cheryl Beillard of Wake-Robin Farm for arranging the driving
clinic with Olaf Nyby this past weekend held near Ottawa Ontario.

Olaf is one of the top driving trainers in Norway (in Norway he gives over
25 clinics per year). Olaf has worked all over the world including the Royal
palace and he really knows his stuff. This man could take the lines from
any driver and make their horse look better. The clinic horses were 6
Fjords, 2 Welsh Ponies, 1 Canadian horse, and 1 Canadian/Appaloosa cross.

The Fjords present included two 3 year old mares - Julie Will's Silviann and
Cheryl Beillard's Tunica, and three mature mares - Pat McCurdy and BDF
Anitra, Linda Wollowitz and Vesle Blakka, and Lori Albrough with Cindy. Pat
Wolfe drove the stallion Felix.

The horses/drivers were divided into four groups consisting of either two or
three turnouts, based on the combined experience of horse and driver. Each
group had two lessons per day. Every group, including the advanced drivers,
started the day with a long-lining lesson. At noon we had a theory session
on rein- and whip-handling techniques. Later that day, we hitched and worked
on our particular goals. For myself, I wanted to work on getting my horse
more forward, but collected, bending and supple. It was nice to see how much
my horse could do, once I figured out how to ask her for it.

The second day was held outside, and started with long-lining, then moving
on to work in the cart. In the morning Cindy and I worked on driving up into
the bridle, bending, circles, figure eights and serpentines. In the
afternoon Cindy and I drove with Pat and Felix and we did a cones course,
and introduced cantering. Fun!

Throughout the course of the clinic Olaf was making suggestions on changes
to equipment, such as bit, whip, cart, etc, that would improve our
performance. He suggested Cindy might be happier in a bit with a port rather
than a mullen mouth (I found them about the same), a longer whip (this
helped), and raising the seat of my cart (this helped too).

I came away pleased with my mare, and very inpsired to come home and work
with my other horses. For me, it was certainly worth the eight hour drive to
get to the clinic.

The facility at Green Glen farm was wonderful, with a large 90' x 200'
indoor arena as well as outdoor driving areas. The staff was great and
attentive, bedding and mucking out was included and the stalls were kept
picked all day. A variety of food and drinks were available on site.
Attention to detail on the part of the staff was definitely there.

Well done and thanks again to Cheryl and her helpers!

Speaking of driving clinics. We had driving clinic on May 19th with
clinician, Sharon Makurat of Whitewater WI. She is another awesome

our MWFHC's winter meeting in Galena two years ago. We had the clinic at an
Anadalusian Farm, in Branch Wi. That is about 30 miles south of Green Bay.
The facility is to die for! We had 3 Fjords, a Pony, a Walker and an
Andalusian. Three were hitched and 3 were still in the ground driving
stages, so we had a wide variety of horses and stages of training. I
learned so much I can't keep it all in my brain. We have set up another
clinic scheduled for Sat, June 30th in Branch again. We have one opening
left. If you live in or around this area contact me, Patti Walter at

and Newton WI. Sharon is a great instructor who knows her stuff and the
clinic is quite reasonable. Auditors are welcome!

Getting excited for our first show, June 3rd in Manitowoc WI. Taking OH
Silas and planning on driving him. This will be our first show where he
will be driving. He has been shown in hand and huntseat. I am nervous
about those big saddlebreds passing us. I am working with another lady here
on my farm, who is driving another one my Fjords in the arena while I am
driving Silas to get him use to being passed, but there is a big difference
between being passed by a Saddlebred and being passed by a Fjord!!!

The next issue is the horse. I suspect that both of us working with your 3
year old might overload her(?) brain. Maybe the other horse, if that is a
possibility. Can I do a weekend lease?

Thanks for reaching out to me. I am recovering from the last onslaught with
Mom...returned last Thursday night at midnight...but there will be another!

I don't think I told you what sweet Jim did for me and my parents. He and I
took a long weekend and drove to Arizona (left after work Friday, took
Monday off) where we picked up my Mom's stuff, then went to see my parents.
We were not there all that long, but he brought his saxophone and his
father's Big Band music and serenaded my parents on the sunny front porch of
the assisted living place. The stucco overhang made for PERFECT acoustics.
It was really special. Ken was mad at mebecause I took Mom's scooter
out of the house (that I had been locked out of...I guess because they
thought I was going to steal stuff...really burns me up). He thought my
demented, aggressive MOm (hitting people with her canes, and escaped a
couple weeks ago) could drive around the halls of the assisted living
facility. Anyway...it would have been vERY hard without Jim's support.

Had a birthday party for my MOM...hired a karaoke type sing-along band that
plays in assisted living facilties. Had them play for the
residents...trying to get her connected to the other residents...which aint
easy with my stepsister and stepfather not likeing it and always wanting to
leave the place. Mom was so lucid the first day that she even made a feeble
effort to complain about the assisted livingbut then said...you know, I
know you are dooing what you think is best for me. It was amazing...like a
miracle cure! Am thinking of looking on CD-L for some minis who visit
nursing homes in Arizona...to take in for the residents to see...and my Mom
to be the hostess.

So...I'm coming...no weekends home for a long time, but lots of horsey fun.

Now have to go look up Norwegian guidebooks. We are leaving on Friday, to
Oslo or Bergen...when I figure it out, I guess I better get the reservation
pronto! Will get to Nordfjordeid on Tuesday sometime. Not sure what we
will do with the time prior. If you have any suggestions, let me know.
Thought we might go to a glass factory near Oslo and get some champagne
glasses for our wedding (just a few really nice ones) and then maybe just
try to wander about the countryside a bit. I don't like to spend short
periods of time in cities unless I know where I am going...it can be boring
bus rides without much interesting if you don't planin the countryside
there is always something interesting.

FMD, packhorses, Intro to driving clinic

2001-03-16 Thread sandra church

This message is from: sandra church [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi everyone
Vivian expressed concern over her to-be-imported fjords and just today this
information was sent through The Horse newsletter. The procedure and
requirements for handling horses imported into the US from countries with
FMD (foot mouth disease) is explained at this website:

http://www.thehorse.com/news/index031601_fmd.html

Gail's mention of the Santa Fe outfitter was timely for me. This weekend,
our local Powhatan Riding Association is meeting at my home and the guest
speaker will demonstrate how to pack a horse. Of course, my Loki will be
used since he's more dependable than the rest of my equines. Hopefully, he
won't startle too many of the club members because anytime he greets a new
person, he sticks his nose in their face for a long sniff. Then if he likes
the person, he sticks out his tongue from the side of his mouth and wants
you to stroke it. That's the first thing he did to me when I answered his
for sale ad and I'm curious if anyone else's fjord does this.

For anyone near Richmond, Va. there's a Introduction to Carriage Driving
clinic on Sunday, March 25th from 10am to 2:30pm at the Deep Run Hunt Club
Showgrounds at Manakin-Sabot. The demonstrations include: obstacle course
driving, driving attire appropriate turnout, training, safety, choosing
a suitable driving horse. There is no charge but bring a pot luck dish.
For more info, contac Dot Ruqus at 804-556-4486 or Cheryl Childress at
804-784-0001. Last year, there were several fjords there. Too bad Loki
doesn't have his harness or cart yet.

Norwegian Driving Clinic (19-20 May, near Ottawa/Cda)

2001-03-13 Thread Cheryl Beillard
This message is from: Cheryl Beillard [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello all .. this is the first formal notice regarding registration for the
above clinic which I'm now deep into organizing.

Olaf Nyby, 2nd Level Norwegian Carriage Driving Instructor, is making his
first visit to Canada on the May 19-20 weekend and we have room for a total
of 12 turnouts to participate in 4 classes each over the 2 days. I have 4
spaces filled (3 fjords, 1 Cdn/QH cross) already - just based on the initial
word of mouth advertizing but there are 8 remaining. The cost is $150 Cdn
for the 4 sessions which will start with ground driving/long reining
techniques, and end with driven dressage, cones and elements of marathon,
depending on the level of experience/interest and abilities of the final mix
of horses and drivers.

Other subjects he will probably touch on include harness fitting
(single/multiples), bit selection, use of the whip, starting young horses
and of course, correcting insecure/problem horses -- not that there are
likely to be any among the fjords!

There will be an opportunity for private lessons (one in the am and another
in the pm) on Friday, May 18, for those who want to get the basics in hand
after the winter, or have a problem they hope to resolve or just want more
time with Olaf.

From what I've heard from the organizers in New York of the 2 clinics he
gave last year, he's not only terrific with the horses but good with people
too .. We will be having a barbecue here the night before for participants -
as Olaf wants to meet his students first and have everyone feel comfortable
about what they will be doing. He recommends that everyone set a goal in
terms of training for the w/e that he will help them achieve.

In terms of his background, Olaf's main interest is Combined Drive/Eventing,
I gather, but he makes/sells harness, trains up to 50 horses a year at his
own stable in Norway (fjords among them) and competes nationally in CDEs
with a team of Oldenbergers. I understand he has done apprenticeships at
the Royal Mews in England, Sweden and Denmark and that he covers both the
theory and history of carriage driving as he instructs. At Cherry Hill, I
was told that one of the people who signed up was one of the most seasoned
drivers on the US national equestrian team and she was completely sold on
Olaf's skill and what she learned in the first half hour!

There will be no more than 3 turnouts in the ring at a time, grouped
according to level, It's a large arena with good viewing from covered
seating overlooking the ring. With a total of 16 classes over the w/e,
moving through all phases of training, I think it promises to be a really
interesting weekend.

There is stabling on the grounds of the really big arena I've booked (near
Arnprior, off Hwy 417, about 1/2 hr north of Ottawa) for $25 Cdn/night and
I'm hosting some participants here .but can easily find BB accomodation
closer to the clinic itself for others. I'm hoping for as many fjords as
possible, as this is a chance to bring together the growing number of owners
and breeders in Ontario. But we'd also love to have people attend from
Quebec and the upper north/eastern States.

Anyone who is interested in participating should contact me ASAP to book a
space, (that goes for those of you who have already said you'll attend .. I
need written confirmation) as I'm about to start advertising locally and I
suspect the classes may fill up quickly .. Ditto for securing a private
lesson(s) the day before. I'm hoping for mostly fjords so we can do some
breed boosting at the same time! A registration package is available on
request and if I haven't emphasized it enough, auditors are welcome, of
course, (it's $25/day or $40 for both) so don't feel you have to bring a
horse .. it will be a fun and informative way to start the season for
everyone.

If some of you in Ontario or Quebec is willing to help promote the clinic, I
have copies of the flyer which you could post in your local feed/tack
store -- that would be most appreciated as this is NOT a money making scheme
for me .. I'm organizing this so that I can participate! .. but there is
that element of concern that I may get stuck with more of the cost than
anticipated ..so any help in advertising it is welcome!

Olaf Nyby Carriage Driving Clinic in Canada (Ottawa Valley, Ont. May 19/20)

This is a heads up for those of you who may be interested in signing up
for lessons or to audit a clinic with Norwegian carriage driving instructor,
Olaf Nyby, which I'm organizing for late May, at a location to be determined
near Ottawa, Ontario.

As it stands we have opted for two days of driving classes, 3 horses to a
class, with auditors -- meaning there will be space for 12 horses only.
Olaf says the training level is unimportant -- you can bring a novice as
well as a seasoned horse .. we will group them accordingly. We are working
out the program now, to include some demonstrations of technique, training
by Olaf in addition to the practical. Olaf has experience with fjords, of
course, as well as other breeds but our hope is to fill the session with
fjords. There will also be an opportunity to schedule individual lessons,
following the clinic, if there is sufficient interest.

Olaf gave several clinics in New York state last year and is coming back for
more. Susan Anderson has posted an article about last year's clinics, which
are a testimonial to Olaf's skill and empathy with horses (and people too,
it seems), can be found at www.carriagedriving.net.

If you are interested in attending, as a participant or an auditor, and/or
would like to help shape the program, please email me privately. More
information will be provided as the agenda gets firmed up.

It's Monday and the clinic is over but WOW we had a good time. Thank you to
all of you that attended! For those that could not it was a wonderful
clinic. Brian is an excellent instructor! Ursula gave me hints that saved me
2-3 years of learning by mistake. Lois Cox massaged a few of my horses
that just gave me a big smile and a thank you MOM. Oh it was busy but
great fun! Thank you to B, U and Lois! Catherine Lassesen

Pat Wolfe Driving Clinic at OHF

I just wanted to second Sue Frievald's message about the fun informative
driving clinic taught by Pat Wolfe at Old Hickory Farm in New York state
this past weekend.

We covered safety, proper fit and adjustment of the harness, techniques used
in starting the young driving horse, ground driving, hitching, proper ways
to hold the lines, and finished up on a cones course. We used four of
Julie's Fjord mares, who all behaved perfectly throughout. Pat then gave
private driving lessons, where I was lucky enough to drive Julie Will's
young stallion Prisco. What a thrill! Pat showed me how to drive one-handed
and it was so exciting (and a bit scary at first!) to be maneuvering such a
powerful yet responsive animal with one hand. I'll need a lot of practice on
the rein-board before I feel really comfortable driving that way.

I especially enjoyed Pat's tips on starting young horses and will be able to
immediately put them to use. He gave us lots of sensible, common-sense tips
that can be done by anyone. He also let us in on a few of his secrets that
have helped him garner so many Canadian driving championships.

Thank you to Julie Will for organizing and hosting the clinic!

Hello all,

I am behind on reading my Fjord list, so I don't know if this has been
posted yet by other members.

The James River Driving Association is presenting an Introduction to
Driving Clinic on Sunday March 5, starting at 10 am with a Potluck
Lunch. It will be held at Deep Run Hunt Club in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia,
a central Virginia location just west of the Richmond 295 beltway.

Topics included with be:
Correct Harness Fitting/Safety Check Procedure
Proper Turnout of apparel and equipment
Obstacle driving (cones)
Display of carriages and tailgate picnic display

For more information, call Dot at 804-556-4486. You can email me
privately for
directions.
This is a really nice group of people, and the club has all types of
drivers and functions. They have always been helpful in answering my
questions. I am taking Freya, and lots of clothing, because I might be
part of the Proper Turnout demonstration. If Freya is in one of her
mellow moods, she will also be doing the harnessing demonstration
because she usually will stand forever. Hope to see some of you there.
