Re: [Flexradio] 1 watt radio
Hi, As a SDR1000 newbee, I'ld like to know if the next hardware generation will provide an USB connectivity rather than the old parallel port and it's USB to // fancy optional adapter. My main usage of my SDR is Expedition with a laptop, no serial, no parallel ports but a lot of USB and at least one 1394 plug for an external firebox or FA66 audiobox. I do also support the need for 1w (or low level [10dBm] with separate TX/RX) SDR version for the next generations as it is required for VHF/SHF setups. Re: [Flexradio] 1 watt radio
Hi, John of Flex-Radio asked for continued comments on the 1 W version. There are also other ways for Flex-Radio to keep inventory low and to know what potential Flexers want without need to look into the crystal ball. Hams interested in a 1 W version could write their name and approximate delivery time on a list that Flex-Radio opens on its webside. The desirous Ham pays a modest amount as down payment which Flex-Radio keeps to cover expenses if the unit is not ordered and paid in due time. How about that? [Flexradio] Poor Audio Connections producing DSSB
Dave, you'll have the same trouble using either DeOxit red or Gold on the stainless-steel mini-plug [HOSA]. I tried them all. In order to eliminate the oxidation that occurs over time between the plug and jack you'd be best advised to re-terminate the cables with 3.5mm gold-plated plugs. I have done this and its completely eliminated the connector interface problem. As well I've found that a very very light coating of DeOxit ProGold contact conditioner on these radio jacks removes the the previous grudge and keeps them functioning 100% with the gold connectors. Best 73, BTW, when doing my phased array research with SDR1000s a couple years ago, I found that most audio cables have really, really crummy shielding (even ones marketed as high performance). I had problems with 60 Hz and coupling from switching power supplies, etc.. Best performance (in terms of interference rejection, etc.) was with cat5 style twisted pairs. Jim Brown, K9YC, has studied this in some detail, and found that it's because in order to actually work for network use, the twist rate and mechanical properties have to be very well controlled. That perfect symmetry and control makes the self-shielding of twisted pair work very, very well (better than most coax). Based on that experience, I'd almost think that the optimum connector for the next go around on an SDR1000 (if it has audio pairs) would be the RJ45 wired as for networks. [Flexradio] Do I have an RF feedback problem?
Greetings, I noticed another flexer mention that his noise gate setting was -23db, mine is set at about -30db. I thought both figures were quite high. When I transmit I notice my reading in the panadapter is about half scale when I'm silent (if that makes any sense) and when I speak it goes higher. Some people told me it sounds as if there is air rushing into my background. I unplugged the microphone and when I key the PTT the panadapter reading is still about half scale. When I slide the microphone gain up and down I can still see the reading go up and down with no mike attached. Is this normal behavior? Or is this a gounding issue? Or is this an RF feedback symptom? I can get rid of the wooshing sound in my audio by using the noise gate but was curious to know how others have set their noise gates. When I listen using the monitor function my audio sounds OK to me, the wooshing sound appears low. When I record myself using the built in recorder it sound OK as well on playback. [Flexradio] NJ1H, SDR-1000 R5 Vertical Wins First Place LP SSB CQWPX 2006 Contest for the SO Assisted All Band Area 1
NJ1H, SDR-1000 R5 Vertical Takes First Place Low Power SSB World Wide WPX Contest for the Single Operator Assisted - All Band division for 1ST Area. I received in the mail today the above award certificate from CQ magazine. As noted on page 111 of January 2007 CQ magazine, I was a certificate winner. This was a surprise to me as I have a modest station. My effort was search and pounce with all contacts on 20M through 10M using the R5 vertical except for 2 contacts on 40M with a random wire in the attic. The Panadapter is great for search and pounce. I almost always click tune with the mouse on frequency enough to make the QSO. I used N1MM contest software in conjunction with the SDR-1000 with D-44, Santa Cruz MB sound circuits running all software on a 2.53 MHz P4 1G byte of memory. N1MM rig comm virtual port and voice keyer used. Santa Cruz provided microphone pre-amp and voice keyer output/mixing function. MB sound circuit provides additional computer sound mixing functions. Score was 186,714 with 323 QSOs and 253 prefixes. On air time was about 17 hours. I submitted 329 QSOs with only 6 bad QSOs. If I appear to be tooting my own horn, perhaps a bit; but the SDR-1000 was definitely a contributing factor. Bill .. congratulations on the win! You mentioned a search and pounce technique. When tuning the bands I too use the panadapter and the mouse and have come to wish for a snap to control. In other words, if you have the step set to 1 khz, clicking on a frequency, within say 500 khz, of a qso that is on a 1 khz mark would put you right on, with that simple click. Is that something that we should be putting on a wish list? --Larry W8ER Bill Bordy wrote: NJ1H, SDR-1000 R5 Vertical Takes First Place Low Power SSB World Wide WPX Contest for the Single Operator Assisted - All Band division for 1ST Area. I think my microphone level may be too high as stated by Eric. Strangely no matter how high I set it it does not distort. Right now it is limited to just the filter (much like our entire display used to be). The long term plan is to enable the full width display for all modes (not just spectrum). So Waterfall, Histogram, etc will have modes similar to the current panadapter. All of that is coming, but it is looking more and more like it will come in the next version of the console. All of that is coming, but it is looking more and more like it will come in the next version of the console. and, architecturally, what you probably want is some sort of waterfall display module to which you pipe spectral data. There are some tricky aspects to waterfall displays and the UI connected with them. For instance, if you tune around the band, do you move the entire display so that the currently tuned frequency is in the middle? And, of course, you have to keep track of where the DDS is tuned vs the software demodulator is tuned, because the center frequency of the FFT output moves with the DDS, not with the current tuning frequency (because of spur reduction) And, then, there are all the usual graphics related issues for waterfall displays (level to color mapping, vertical or horizontal, scaling , etc.) particularly what you do when you change some thing (if I change the RF gain of the radio, do I compensate for that in the waterfall, or do I just show it as the signals being stronger now...) I prefer having calibrated displays.. that is, the display is always in true levels, just like a real spectrum analyzer, but there are good reasons why you might not want to do it that way. But, for instance, if you change the dB/color mapping, do you do it for the whole waterfall, or just from the point of change. Everett, I have no direct experience with PCMCIA Firewire cards, but I do know that the FA-66 is a 1394a device and you need a 1394a adapter. Some adapters now are coming with both an A and B version ports on the same adapter. The physical port geometry is different for the different Firewire flavors. I'd love to know what others are using successfully with the FA-66 and Firebox so that information can be placed in the KB article you referenced below. -Tim FRS KB Administrator -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Everett Palmer Sent: Thursday, January 11, 2007 11:39 PM To: FlexRadio Subject: [Flexradio] Recommended firewire cards for laptops ?
