Make sure you have the latest version of PowerSDR.xml as it (and

When you try to transmit, does the radio seem to try to transmit.
That is, does the radio seem to be transmitting and you just get no

Or does the radio just stay in receive?
Also what mode are you using cw, psk, rtty?

Most likely it is the serial port assignments in the CAT control chain.
Microsoft Operating System is famous for reassigning serial com ports if
a change is made. Look there. Also, if you use DDUtil, check and make
sure those serial ports are all aligned as you have previously assigned
them.

At least this has happened to me with previous changes.

Re: [Flexradio] fldigi and CW question

2011-11-07 Thread Don

Lee, K4LHP

I also use a 3000 with Fldigi and my observations are the same as yours.
It is my belief that if you want to use the cw mode in PowerSDR you will
need
to make up a Comm port keying cable that will plug into the Key port on
the 3000.
Since the only thing hooked up to my 3000 is the Firewire cable I have no
choice
but to use the VAC - audio to send cw. I could be incorrect about this but
someone

will correct me if I am.

The other thing is of course since you are in Digital mode, when recorded to
the logbook
it records digital instead of CW (at least for me) so I then need to go back
and edit

the logbook.

I've never used WinLog32 but would be interested in hearing about how you
got
Fldigi to automatically log to it. Probably off line would be better for
that.

Subject: [Flexradio] fldigi and CW question

I have a 3000 for almost a year now, and have successfully been using MMTTY
for RTTY with my radio. When I got the radio, I had a new version of
Windows 7 that fldigi wouldn't install; now it does. So, after installing,
I wanted to try my hand at CW, especially with the big contest this weekend.
All settings were checked and double and triple checked. I went to an empty
frequency and sent out a call. The panadapter was flat. The meter was set
to mic, and it appeared to be modulating. When I set the meter to forward
power: flat. I then set the output of flex digi to my computer speakers:
CW coming through loud and clear. Then after pondering the situation, for
giggles, I turned the PowerSDR software from CWL to DigL, sent a call, and
there was a great spike on the panadapter. Then I tried it on a contester
and got an immediate response.

So, I think what is going on here is that since my signal is coming through
VAC, the PowerSDR is only picking up the sound generated by fldigi as though
it is a digital mode. I suppose the CW mode only works with a key, even
though there is a VAC button on the screen in CW. My configuration worked
well in the contest after some tweeking of the macros in fldigi. Plus, I
was able to get my contacts to automatically post in my logging program,
Winlog32.

So, my questions are: Am I off base here, or should this be working when
PowerSDR is set for CW? If not, does anyone have any suggestions for
checking settings in any of the software (PowerSDR, fldigi) that would make
this work? Or, should I just keep using it the way it is?

Thank you and 73,

Lee

My F3K has a perfectly functional KEY jack, that I drive with my Bencher

If you are doing some remote thing, then OK, but otherwise why would you

Im trying hard to get FLDigi going on my Flex

In trying to get the CAT settings going, it talks about the rigs XML file. I
did find a web page that is supposed to have them, all I get is a web page full
of text. I tried saving that text and calling it an XML file. That didnt work

Anyone have this XML file to make FLDigi work?

The wiki sends one off to another web site which is some what helpful. Ive read
and re-read many times.

Im using 2.0.19

Any help would be most appreciated

Tim,

I am not home with that computer, but it is the version that Steve Nance
sent me on 1/2/2011-the file properties of the setup file say that it
was modified in 10/30/2009 . The pdf file that is included in the zip
file says VSP Manager by K5FR- Version 1.0.1.006.

These look like standard logging messages from fldigi but not sure. I don't
usually leave the software status logging turned on. You really need to go
ask on the fldigi mailing list. It is linux...@yahoogroups.com. Most of the
guys there run linux but fldigi is supported on windows and MacOS too.

Neal,

I am going to double check tonight by re-booting the computer and then
just starting SDR and fldigi to see if the error goes away. If it
does, then there is some residual service left running when HRD is
closed. HRD does in fact use that port when it is running, but it is
not on at the same time as fldigi.

Re: [Flexradio] fldigi error

2011-01-12 Thread Gary Warner
I went home and rebooted my computer. Then I tried to open SDR, and it
would not open. I tried and tried to open it, and it simply would not
do so. I then ran the SDR setup again and did a repair of the SDR
installation. Once that was done, everything worked fine- both SDR and
fldigi. No more conflicts or messages.

By the way, I do not think that I can use a different pair of COM ports
for HDR's logbook than I do with fldigi, or I would have to keep
changing the COM port in SDR, wouldn't I?

Anyway it works fine again, so I guess the old adage is true about
Windows- reboot and everything is fine again until it is necessary to
reboot again.

On the fldigi site there are examples of the sounds of the different modes
so you can identify them by ear.

Conversely, if you want to hear what they sound like, change the fldigi
output from your VAC stream to your computer's sound-card output and then
when you transmit with fldigi, the sound of the signal will come out your
speaker instead of going to PowerSDR.

I use fldigi to do MFSK16 and other MFSK modes, e.g. Olivia, Contestia,
DominoEX, Thor, etc., all the time. Do remember that you need to transmit in
DIGU for MFSK to work properly. PSK31 doesn't care and some people use DIGL
or LSB for RTTY (old habits die hard) so if you have set up your system to
send in LSB/DIGL mode, it will reverse the order of the MFSK tones, thus
making it impossible for MFSK to decode.

It probably isn't the RigCAT file since it works perfectly directly connected

I believe that DXLabs Commander was designed with interfacing to a physical

Also, please elaborate on how an application correctly designed to

You have to use DDUtil. There is no way to have two CAT enabled applications
talking to PowerSDR at the same time (there is only one pSDR CAT port).

Post your problem with DDUtil to their list on Yahoo, I am sure you will get a
fix from someone there.

I have promised to write a how-to for configuring fldigi to work with
PowerSDR on the Windows platform for the fldigi folks. I run mine
without any problems whatsoever but then, I am still running XP. I
have no intention of even considering Windows 7 until Microsoft comes
out with SP1.

I can tell you how to configure VAC, VSPmgr, PowerSDR, and fldigi but
if anything is Win7 dependent/specific, I can't help with that. Also,
these instructions do not address using ddutil. If you want to do rig
control of an amplifier, rotator, or other external device in addition
to fldigi, you can add that later. For now follow these steps in order
to get fldigi and PowerSDR to play together. It is perfectly OK to add
ddutil into the mix later.

Here are the steps.

1. Download all the software pieces you need.

Here is a list of the software you are going to need:

a. PowerSDR (http://flex-radio.com)

b. the flex FireWire driver (http://flex-radio.com)

c. fldigi (http://www.w1hkj.com/Fldigi.html)
I am running the alpha version 3.13BK right now but you can run the
production version.

d. the PowerSDR rig description XML file for fldigi's RigCAT
(http://www.w1hkj.com/xmlarchives.html)

e. VAC v4.09 (http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.html)
You must purchase the release version. You MUST NOT run the demo version.

f. VSPmanager (http://k5fr.com/ddutilwiki/index.php?title=VSP_Manager)

2. Install the Flex firewire driver.

I am not going to address which one because it depends on which
version of PowerSDR your are running. For the purposes of these
instructions you should assume that you are installing the latest
released version of the driver. Follow Flex's instructions. I use a
buffer size of 2048 and a sample rate of 96ksps.

3. Install PowerSDR.

Again, I assume you are installing the release version and it is
compatible with the driver you have installed. Make sure that the
sample rate and buffer size (SetupAudioPrimary) match the driver.
(The new driver may automatically track the settings in PowerSDR. Even
so, verify they are set the same.)

4. Make sure that PowerSDR both transmits and receives. It should run
normally.

5. Install VAC.

Follow the instructions provided with VAC. There are some differences
between installing with XP, Vista, and Win7 so be sure you read the
instructions, most notably in how to deal with unsigned drivers in
Vista and Win7.

NOTE: you MUST MUST MUST use the purchased-version of VAC 4.09. You
MUST NOT, MUST NOT, MUST NOT use the demo version! Go ahead and
buy it. It will work.

6. Open the VAC control program Control Panel and configure VAC.

You get to the VAC control panel from the Windows Start button under
All Programs. Look for the Virtual Audio Cable menu item and then
select Control panel.

In the upper left hand corner of the control panel for VAC you want to
set it for 2 cables. I left all the other settings alone. Click the
'Set' and 'Restart' buttons. If you want to check, here is what I have
all the VAC parameters set for:

SR 22050..48000, BPS 8..16, NC 1..2, Max inst 20, Ms per int 7,
Stream fmt Cable Range, Volume control (unchecked), Connected source
lines line, Clock corr% 100.000.

Once you click the Restart button you should see cable 1 and cable 2
appear in the lower section of the Virtual Audio Cable Control Panel
(if not sooner).

7. Now set up VSPmgr.

For now you will create a single port-pair that will be used for CAT
control of fldigi by PowerSDR. Both rig control and PTT will be
handled by this single port-pair.

Start the VSPmgr utility. It will show you your physical serial ports
and offer to create a virtual port pair. Make sure that your virtual
port pair starts above any possible physical serial port numbers. It
is possible for virtual ports to conflict with physical ports if the
physical ports are added later. In my case I created port pair
COM6/COM7 for communications between PowerSDR and fldigi. Most of the
examples use COM6/COM16 or COM7/COM17 but I discovered that some
programs, e.g. WSJT and WSPR, have problems with port numbers above 9.
Therefore by creating a port-pair where both com numbers are below 10
means that the configuration may be used later on to communicate with
these other programs.

Setting up the port-pair is nothing more than selecting the desired
values for End 1 and End 2, COM6 and COM7 in this case, and clicking
the Create Pair button.

8. Set up PowerSDR to use VAC.

With PowerSDR running, click on Setup, select the Audio, and then
the VAC tabs to display the VAC

Sure it is possible. I am doing it right now. It works great, but I am
biased. I wrote the RigCat control file for PowerSDR :-)

I am not using DDUtil with it.

I recommend that you get the digital mode program working sans DDUtil with
PowerSDR first and then add the DDUtil layer in afterwards so you are
troubleshooting one problem and possibly not two or more of them at the same
time.

working. I have NO waterfall display and when I set it to CW, I get the

PowerSDR, I've got audio set to virtual audio cable one and virtual audio
cable two. In FLDigi, audio tab, I've got them reversed. I even went to
Windows Control Panel - Sound and set the input and output to the same as
in FLDigi. I'm missing something...

Hope ok Brian ?.

8. Install the Flex 5000 driver.
9. Install PowerSDR.
10. Make sure these are both working properly.
11. Install VAC 4.09 live version -- DO NOT INSTALL THE DEMO
VERSION!! Configure it for two channels.
12. Install com0com. Configure it for two virtual RS232 cables:
COM6COM16 and COM7COM17. Enable buffer overrun on both.
13. Configure PowerSDR AudioVAC. Use Driver: MME, Input: Virtual
Cable 2, Output: Virtual Cable 1.
14. Configure PowerSDR CAT Control for port COM6. Click to enable CAT.
Set the ID as: PowerSDR.
13. Install ddutil. Configure it to talk to the rig on COM16.
Configure it to talk to the rigctl program on COM17.
14. Download fldigi and the PowerSDR.xml rig control description file
from the fldigi home page.
15. Install fldigi. Copy the PowerSDR.xml file to the rigs folder
inside the fldigi.files folder. (The fldigi.files folder is at the top
level for the user under Documents and Settings.)
16. Configure fldigi soundcard configuration to use portaudio with
Capture: Virtual Cable 1, and Playback: Virtual Cable 2.
17. Select the Rig tab of the fldigi configuration pane. Select the
RigCAT tab.
* Use RigCAT selected
* Rig description file: PowerSDR.xml
* Device: COM7
* Retries 3
* Retry interval 30
* command interval 80
* CAT command for PTT selected
* click initialize, save, and close.

You are up and running.

Yes, besides fldigi there are other digital mode programs. But since I
run on MacOS, Windows, and Linux, I prefer fldigi. If you are only
going to run on Windows then I suggest you also consider the Ham Radio
Deluxe/DM780 combo. If you have followed the above instructions you
can pretty much substitute HRD for fldigi. I find the logging in HRD
and fldigi adequate for my uses. (I operate digital modes almost
exculsively.) For occasional voice operation I use the logging in HRD
as it supports this mode properly whereas the logging in fldigi does
not.

Good luck!

P.S. I will try out my F5K on my MacBook Pro using the IEEE-1394b port
with an adaptor cable and report back here.

making fldigi work with PowerSDR.

Select the
 RigCAT tab.
 * Use RigCAT selected
 * Rig description file: PowerSDR.xml
 * Device: COM7
 * Retries 3
 * Retry interval 30
 * command interval 80

(I operate digital modes almost
exculsively.) For occasional voice operation I use the logging in HRD
as it supports this mode properly whereas the logging in fldigi does
 not.

 Good luck!

Thank you! Actually, I did see that, but that wasn't it. What finally got
it working was that I had to turn OFF sending I/Q along with the audio.

only handles 3 extra RCPs. So if I want to use DX Lab suite, HRD, CW

then I haven't compared FLDigi with Brian's DM780 in HRD, so it may be that
FLDigi isn't really all that necessary. Hopefully, there will be a way to
do this with a macro.

Also, there's the issue of whether or not to use my amp and what do I do for
a tuner. I have an old Murch Transmatch which works fine, but won't lend
itself towards computerized switching. Anyone have any suggestions there?
I'd love to get a STEPP-IR, if I ever can afford it and a new tower, but for

Oh, definitely! You need a program that knows what to do with separate
I and Q streams. Fldigi and HRD/DM780 both expect plain-old,
single-channel, low IF.

THAT was the problem.  Now, unfortunately to use CW Skimmer with a lot of
bandwidth that has to be on.  The other problem is that it looks like DDUtil
only handles 3 extra RCPs.  So if I want to use DX Lab suite, HRD, CW
Skimmer and FLDigi, I'm out of luck.

I guess the big question is, why would you want to use both HRD and
fldigi at the same time? The logging features of HRD are better but if
you don't need all that, fldigi is simpler to operate *and* it is one
program as opposed to two in the case of HRD/DM780. Also, if you are
using HRD/DM780 there is the latency problem with commands going
between DM780 and HRD, and then on to PowerSDR.

At least for the moment.  And if I
want to use CW Skimmer and FLDigi, I have to remember to turn I/Q on for CW
Skimmer (which I think is one fantastic CW decoder) and off for FLDigi, but
then I haven't compared FLDigi with Brian's DM780 in HRD, so it may be that
FLDigi isn't really all that necessary.  Hopefully, there will be a way to
 do this with a macro.

There was some comparison between the CODECs in DM780 and fldigi. For
the most part it was a wash.

So you can run either HRD/DM780 or fldigi to accomplish the same
thing. Personally I use fldigi because of the control channel
latencies with HRD/DM780/PowerSDR.

Also, there's the issue of whether or not to use my amp and what do I do for
a tuner.  I have an old Murch Transmatch which works fine, but won't lend
itself towards computerized switching.  Anyone have any suggestions there?

Hit the tune button in PowerSDR, do an initial tune up of the manual
tuner and amp, then turn up the wick to do the final tuning of the
amp. There was amateur radio before there was computer automation. ;-)

I'd love to get a STEPP-IR, if I ever can afford it and a new tower, but for
160-80-40, I need to use wires.

That seems to be the way it is for most of us. Loops are good!

Oh, and I am still going to finish off the instructions for using
fldigi with PowerSDR. It'll be my Christmas present to someone. :-)

For windows 7, it's best to use VSPmgr.

Virtual Audio Cables are sharable amongst applications as delivered..
So.. you can have multiple programs hooked up to a virtual audio cable ..

DDutil allows multiple programs to share the PowerSDR CAT com port.

Can someone shed some light on what Fldigi is and what must be used for?
[Tim] It is a digital mode program like MixW, but it is platform independent

I am just hearing about it today. I will be running Windows XP as provided by
FLEX Radio on the FLEX 5000C. I am now wondering how many different software
programs I am going to have to run to do digital and logging.
[Tim] Depends on what you want to do and the different hardware you want to
connect to your software defined radio.

You will need two basic third-party programs

(1) Com0Com - (free program) to create a virtual com port pair to allow a
digital mode program, logger, DDUtil or other CAT enabled program to
communicate with the radio (PowerSDR). See the following KC articles
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50345.aspx
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50062.aspx
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50078.aspx

(2) VAC (virtual audio cable: http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.html) -
(must be purchased, demo program is not usable). If you want to operate
digital modes, you need to seriously consider this software package. This
program transfers RX and TX audio from PowerSDR to a digital mode program
running on the same computer as PowerSDR. This software is optional, but if
you do not use it, you have to create an external sound card interface. The
convenience and increase in you digital quality signal is work the purchase
price. See the following KC articles
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50060.aspx
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50230.aspx

I hope I did not sell my IC-7800 too soon.
[Tim] You didn't. There is a bit of a learning curve to get started, but there
are a lot of helpful people on the Reflector and the KC has a lot of how to
articles about different things you can use with your FLEX-5000C. Dudley
(FlexRadio Support) is a wealth of information and he will get you going.

Looking forward to getting the new FLEX5000C in and maybe then I will
understand it better.
[Tim] Having it to work with is a big help. A lot less abstract.

I have many unanswered questions.
[Tim] You have come to the right place to get them answered

Can someone tell me how to do a search on the knowledge base? I did not see a
search place. Now mind you, that I am legally blind, that has not gotten in my
way so far. I now have a 40 monitor and ZoomText to be able to see anything
on the computer. ZoomText is a hog on the resources.

[Tim] Open up the Knowledge Center (http://kc.flex-radio.com) On the right hand
side is a small blue box that says Quick Search. Enter a keyword, like CAT
into the text entry box that has the word Keywords... in it and click on the
Search button.

Thanks for any help.

Good question. Is there an overview of PowerSDR and its friends so
that one can understand how all the pieces fit together?

First, PowerSDR is the radio itself. Your Flex 5000 or Flex 3000 plus
your computer running PowerSDR *IS* the radio.

If you are running a traditional radio and connecting it to your
computer to do digital modes, e.g. RTTY, PSK31, Olivia, etc., you have
to connect your radio to your computer and then run some digital mode
software on the computer. The speaker output of the radio connects to
the input of the computer's sound card. The output of the sound card
connects to the mic input (or line input if your radio has such) of
your radio. You also need a way to key the transmitter so there is
some kind of third connection from the computer to the PTT on the
radio, usually through some kind of an adaptor.

Once you have the physical connection you need to run the right
software on the computer to enable the digital modes. There are many
possibilities. For example: Ham Radio Deluxe with Digital Mode 780,
fldigi, MixW, etc. Some programs just do the digital modes and some
are more all-encompassing including rig control (frequency, mode,
filters, etc.) and/or logging. If you are running Windows and want an
all-in-one program to do digital modes, rig control, and logging, your
two best choices are probably Ham Radio Deluxe (HRD -- includes DM780)
and fldigi. If you are the kind who wants *ALL* the bells-and-
whistles, HRD is the way to go. If you want the essentials in an
easier-to-understand package, I would recommend fldigi. Both are
excellent programs and both are free.

If the program is going to control the radio and get information from
the radio, you need another connection between computer and radio.
This is the CAT connection and usually is an RS-232 (serial) port
connection. Through this connection the radio communicates frequency,
mode, power, filters, and just about everything else the radio knows
how to do. The logging program will use this connection to
automatically fill in a lot of information from a contact for you.
Conversely the computer can use this connection to control the radio.
Some radios (Icom comes to mind here) need an adaptor box between the
computer and radio.

Are you with me so far? Now we need to apply this the flex radios and
PowerSDR.

In the previous example, the radio and computer were separate and
connected together by cables and adaptor boxes. But what happens when
the radio is inside the computer with all the other programs? There
is no place to plug the cables. Still, we need an audio cable for
receive audio, an audio cable for transmit audio, a PTT control
line, and a serial cable for CAT. In the case of the flex radios
the cables come in the form of extra software that runs inside the
computer.

To connect the audio signal from the radio to the digital mode
program, instead of a wire we use Virtual Audio Cable (VAC). When you
set up VAC it looks like a sound card to both devices. PowerSDR sends
its audio to VAC thinking it is talking to a sound card. Your
digital mode program connects to VAC thinking it is getting audio from
a sound card. VAC acts as a virtual patch panel to send the digital
audio directly from one to the other. This keeps the digital signal as
pure as possible.

PowerSDR doesn't need a separate PTT line since it can accept a PTT
command via CAT. Instead of grounding a line to turn the transmitter
on (which the Flex radios can do -- there is a traditional PTT line)
PowerSDR can accept a transmitter on and transmitter off command.
This simplifies life and reduces the number of necessary connections.

So how do we get the CAT commands to go between PowerSDR and your
digital mode program? We use a virtual com port program com0com.
com0com looks like two serial ports connected back to back. PowerSDR
opens one thinking it is talking to a hardware serial port. Your
digital-mode/logging/rig-control program opens the other corresponding
virtual port. Now whenever PowerSDR sends a message it is received by
the digital mode program and vice versa. This is how the CAT commands
and messages flow between PowerSDR and your digital mode programs.

So to make this all work you need four programs: PowerSDR (the radio),
VAC (the audio cables), com0com (the serial ports), and your
favorite digital mode and rig control program. (I use fldigi most of
the time but also keep HRD on and use that for more general purpose
logging.)

Tim has given you the pointers to the articles in the knowledge base
that will help you set up all the programs. Hopefully this little
overview
