Spacious 3 bedroom flat (3BHK)available for sale in upscale area near Miramar beach Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com Lt Gen E.A Vas (b. May 15, 1923) passed away last night at his home in Pune. Vas, PVSM, was from Saligao, and commissioned in the Infantry in August 1942. A graduate from the Defence Services Staff College and National Defence College, he had commanded the 1st Battalion, 9th Gorkha rifles. He served in various training and staff appointments, and held active command assignments all over South Asia, from the Indo-Afghan frontier (pre-Partition) and along the Sino-Indian, Indo-Park, Burma and Bangladesh borders. The General commanded an Infantry-Armoured Brigade Group in the Indo-Pak War of 1965, and an Infantry Division in the Rajasthan desert in 1971. He was responsible for setting up and developing the College of Combat from its inception, was a Corps Commander in the Punjab in 1974 and was appointed Adjutant General in 1977. He retired in May 1981, as General Officer-Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Army. He has been based at Pune, and spent time writing on security matters, and was associated with the Departments of Defence Studies at the Universities of Pune and Allahabad. He was the author of three books on violence, terrorism and insurgency, a personal account of the Jammu and Kashmir Operations 1947-49, and a travel book on Bhutan. His book 'Fools and Infantrymen: One View of History 1923-1993' touches on themes like the migration and establishment of the Goan community in Karachi, Sind and Vas' early years there. He also writes about the rise of Mahatma Gandhi in the Indian scene, the start of World War II, factors that influenced his career in the army, pre-commission training at Mhow, excitingly dangerous service in the NWFP (North West Frontier Province), and the like. His writing touches on Rajaji's opposition to the Quit India Movement, the influx of Emergency Commissioned British and Indian officers and its effect on imperialist die-hard civil servants and the military establishment, the feelings in the Indian Army about the INA trials, the lack of expertise in military affairs in the Congress Party, and the like. His story in the above book begins thus: OPENQUOTE: I was born on 15 May 1923 in Karachi, a small port with a cosmpolitan population; a majority of Sindhi Muslims, many Sindhi Hindus, some Hindus from elsewhere in India, a few Christians and Parsis, and a sprinkling of Jews. The Christian element consisted mainly of people from Goa who had begun migration to British-administered regions from the early 19th century onwards for economic reasons. Whole villages under intrepid leaders would set off to East Africa, Calcutta, Bombay and Karach in search for a better life. Males would form the advance guard. If things worked out well, they would be followed then [by] their women. CLOSEQUOTE Lt Vas features in *Floreat Saligao* (May Saligao Flourish) by C. Hubert de Souza, and the centenary sourvenir (1873-1973) of the Mae de Deus Church, Saligao, focussing on prominent village-expats. Goa Today wrote in September 1981: After the Partition of India, he joined the renowned 9th Gorkha Refiles with whoom he fought the Kashmir Operations and subsequently he commissioned a brigade during the 1965 Indo-Pak War. Thereafter he held all the coveted command and staff appointments up the ladder, both in war and peace, during his brilliant Army career, culiminating in his command of the Eastern Army as the GOC-in-C. In this position, he had to handle the most explosive and politically-sensitive issues of Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur and other tribal areas in the East, besides being responsible for the defence of our North Eastern and Eastern frontiers. He was awarded the Param Vashist Seva Medal (PVSM) in 1977 for distinguished service of the highest order, both in war and peace. General Vas comes from a family of many illustrious people and soldering has also been earlier in the family. His uncle Alec Vas, who was studying law at the Inner Temple in London, joined the Army when World War I broke out and died in the Battle of the Somme. His eldest uncle Joe Vas was the first Goan ICS officer. He was in the Bengal Cadre. He died and is buried at Khulna (now Bangladesh). Joe Vas' daughter Joan is married to A.L. Dias, also ICS, who was later Governor of Bengal. General Vas' charming wife Maureen also has a martial background, being the daughter of a retired Commander, Indian Navy, who hails from Pilerne in Goa. [Goanet] What Michael Jackson and Goa have in common
* G * O * A * N * E * T C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * Apartment for sale in Campal/Miramar area, Panaji, Goa. Spacious 3 bedroom flat (3BHK)available for sale in upscale area near Miramar beach Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com This morning I read that Michael Jackson's mother is considering the possibility of suing Jackson's doctor for wrongful death. Now consider this, Jackson was a grown man of 50, who for years was estranged from his family and infact had a very troubled relationship with his father. During these 50 odd years of Jackson's life, the family did precious little to reign in Jackson's bizarre lifestyle. For years and years the family aided and abetted Jackson's addiction, making whatever excuses it needed to make for him and now it is truly rich that they should seek to sue the doctor. A very similar situation is occurring in Goa. For all the time I have been on Goanet at least, I have been crying hoarse about how the fundamentalist groups in Goa will grow to strangle our very democracy. Some months back I was demonised as being a fear-monger and trying to divide the community along communal lines. Now the chickens have come home to roost. They aren't targeting just Muslims or Christians, their targets have turned to respectable members of the Hindu community themselves. The only problem is how do we fell the giant of distortion that we have created in our midst? Frederick tells us that these individuals should be taken on in the Marathi media. The more important question is why are the Marathi media papers recruiting grounds for these individuals? The power that these groups have is their ingenuity. What is peddled is nothing but falsity but of course it can always be true can't it? If it is couched in the right manner. It could just be true that Muslims are responsible for centuries of persecuting Hindus and should now inturn be victimised lest they rise again and build a few more Taj Mahals; it just could be true that Christians are responsible for the Inquisition and that they could suddenly turn a 1.2 billion country into a Christian stronghold? That the vast Hindu majority has failed in Goa to actually question these untruths, to vociferously take on these groups, to me says they have been nothing more than the Jackson family of Goa. best, selma

[Goanet] Goa's Artistic Freedom under threat
* G * O * A * N * E * T C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * Apartment for sale in Campal/Miramar area, Panaji, Goa. Spacious 3 bedroom flat (3BHK)available for sale in upscale area near Miramar beach Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com Dear all, This is with reference to the news reports that have appeared in this morning dailies that threaten to put our Constitutional rights of “Freedom of Expression” once again under attack. Activists of the right wing Hindu Orthodox Group the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) and the Sanatan Sanstha are threatening to carry out a series of protests and disrupt the Exhibition of one of Goa's pioneer art figures Dr Subodh Kerkar. All kinds of false, frivolous and baseless complaints have been filed against him and the Artist has also been receiving intimidating and threatening calls. Sadly, instead of taking action against such groups who wish to impose their own narrow sectarian views, the Police and the Government are pressurizing Dr Kerkar to close down his exhibition, in total disregard to the laws of the land and in utter contempt to even the Judgments laid down by the Honourable Courts on “Artistic Freedom”. In this context, it is relevant to note some of the observations made in the M.F Hussain Judgment that had exonerated the Country’s foremost Art legend from similar frivolous charges made by similar publicity-seeking groups some time back. In his substantial Judgment which was later upheld by the Supreme Court, Justice Kaul had opined: A painter has his own perspective of looking at things and it cannot be the basis of initiating criminal proceedings against him, In India, a new puritanism is being carried out in the name of cultural purity and a host of ignorant people are vandalizing art and pushing us towards a pre-renaissance era, the learned Judge also observed. Why is the present Government consistently treating these Right-wing groups with kid gloves? Why is no action being initiated against such elements that are publicly threatening our artists and cultural figures and are seeking to take India back into the dark ages? While the duty of the Government is to uphold the laws of the land, why is this Government caving in to pressure from radical groups? Is it because Digamber Kamat and Ravi Naik have no spine or are they too “Hindutva” activists in disguise? The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti is a fringe group that does not represent the views of the Hindus and even if it does Secular Laws must hold supreme over religious diktats. It is also pertinent to note that Hindus have always decorated their Gods and Goddesses and have represented them in different shapes, figures and forms. Dr Kerkar has thus only taken this artistic tradition forward while the HJS is hell-bent on destroying the very essence and spirit of Hinduism and – slowly and steadily - everything that India represents. Can all those who support an Artist’s rights to Freedom of expression make some kind of a representation to the present Government and the Police on Dr Subodh Kerkar’s behalf? Can we stand up and be counted now? Regards Sandeep Heble --- For more on this issue, follow the following links: http://tinyurl.com/rczgpy http://tinyurl.com/kkw9g2 http://tinyurl.com/mlo7ts

[Goanet] Herald editorial and reports on Kerkar issue
* G * O * A * N * E * T C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * Apartment for sale in Campal/Miramar area, Panaji, Goa. Spacious 3 bedroom flat (3BHK)available for sale in upscale area near Miramar beach Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com [The cartoon in question is on p 2 of Herald.] Herald, 18 Aug 2009 Editorial Telephone terrorism? W ho has given the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS), the Sanatan Saunstha (SS) and the Marathi daily newspaper Sanatan Prabhat the authority to decide what is the right and wrong way to depict Hindu deities? Hot on the heels of its demand for removing a completely unobjectionable painting by renowned painter M F Husain, which is (hopefully) presently on display at the Goa State Museum, the troika of the HJS, the SS and Sanatan Prabhat are now targeting renowned Goan painter Dr Subodh Kerkar. The artist is to open an exhibition of innovative sketches on Lord Ganesha, along with a sculpture-installation of Goa’s most popular deity to highlight the issue of plastic waste in the state, on the occasion of the state’s most popular festival, Chowoth or Ganesh Chaturthi. The exhibition is to open on Friday. None of Dr Kerkar’s sketches is objectionable or obscene in any way. They only show Lord Ganesha engaged in different activities. But the HJS and the SS believe that any deviation from what they dictate as the ‘right’ way to depict Lord Ganesha – for example, showing Him dancing or playing the flute – is a ‘denigration’. In the past, they have vehemently opposed the efforts of various Ganesh Mandals to create large idols of eco-friendly materials with innovative designs. This, too, they say, is ‘denigration’. This is an extreme, fundamentalist and reductionist interpretation of Hindusism; somewhat similar to the puritanical interpretation of Islam by the Wahabi sect. The latter considers music, films, and even photographs as un-Islamic. An accomplished cartoonist, Dr Kerkar also angered the HJS with a cartoon in the Marathi daily Lokmat, lampooning the outfit on the M F Husain issue. It shows an artist drawing the great Maharashtra saint Samarth Swami Ramdas – who is normally shown wearing only a caxtti – in a suit, and explaining that he is doing this so that no one’s religious feelings should be ‘hurt’. Denouncing it as a ‘denigration’ (what else?) of Samarth Swami Ramdas, the Sanatan Prabhat editor – one Prithviraj P Hazare – has, in a note on Sanatan Prabhat’s front page on Sunday 16 August, charged that Dr Kerkar has ‘deliberately’ denigrated Samarth Swami Ramdas, and asked whether devotees and other devout Hindus will not “take him to task” for this. A banner headline across the top of the front page states that “stopping” those denigrating Lord Ganesh is nothing but ‘bhakti’ or devotion. Several other news items in the newspaper use strong language to denounce Dr Kerkar. The newspaper has also listed the telephone numbers of Dr Kerkar and Mr Nayak, and urged readers to call them and “protest”. Thanks to this blatant provocation, both Dr Kerkar and Raju Nayak have been getting dozens of threatening calls a day. Some callers have threatened to chop off their fingers, others to kill them. HJS and SS supporters have filed police complaints against Dr Kerkar and Mr Nayak in different police stations. If any of the fundamentalist followers of the HJS and SS actually follow through with their threats, who will be responsible? Under Section153 IPC, wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot is punishable – by up to one year in jail if rioting is committed, and up to six months in jail if rioting is not committed. Anyone who feels that our fears are exaggerated should remember that members of the Sanatan Saunstha are accused of setting off a bomb in a Thane theatre, near Mumbai, because it was showing a drama that they the SS had denounced as ‘denigrating’ Hindu deities. The Goa Police should take this threat extremely seriously, and provide adequate police protection to Dr Subodh Kerkar’s studio and residence, as well as the Lokmat office and Raju Nayak’s residence. The HJS and SS are fond of picking soft targets. When people consecrate stones and trees as ‘Gods’ on the roadside, is it not an act of ‘denigration’? If the SS and HJS are serious about their so-called mission, let them stop these roadside shrines first. There is a tree at Karmal Ghat, Canacona, that some people claim resembles Lord Ganesh. They have started to built a temple around it, that will inevitably block part of National Highway 17. Let the HJS and SS show their sincerity by first stopping ‘denigration’ through such shrines. -- Herald, 18 Aug 2009, p 2 Scribe alleges death threats from Hindu fundamentalist HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, AUG 17 Editor of newly-launched Marathi

Dont Deprive Curtorkars With reference to the news article 'Joaquim depriving Curtorkars of water, charges Reginaldo' on Herald dated 13th August 2009, I would like to express my views on the said article. Water is the basic necessity of every citizen and one must remember nobody has the right to deprive the same to the citizens of this country. It is not the man made product but it is coming from the God. The MLA is an elected representative of the respective constituency he has the full right to fight for the cause of his constituents because it is they who elected him. Mr. Reginaldo, the Hon. MLA from Curtorim Constituency has every right to fight against any wrongdoing of any Minister be it his friend or enemy. But we do remember one thing that in politics, there are no permanent friends enemies. Mr. Joaquim being a Hon. Minister, he has to keep Goa above his constituency. I am not saying that he has to deprive his constituents of the basic needs, but he has to see that every citizen of Goa get what they deserve. I am not against or supporting anyone, but I just want to tell our Hon. Minister Mr. Joaquim Alemao to sort out this issue by taking our Hon. MLA into confidence and to find out an amicable solution where both Cuncolim Curtorim constituency can be benefited. I am sure that Mr. Joaquim being a big hearted man can do the needful. Mario F. Spacious 3 bedroom flat (3BHK)available for sale in upscale area near Miramar beach Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com Govt chalks out swine flu rules for schools PTI NEW DELHI, AUG 17 The government tonight asked schools to dispense with morning assemblies and ensure class teachers check each student for symptoms of swine flu under a set of new guidelines to help contain spread of the viral infection. The Health Ministry, which came out with the three-page guideline, also asked the school authorities not to insist on production of medical certificate from absentee students, including teachers and other staff, who had developed flu-like symptoms. “Schools are advised to avoid any large gathering of students during the course of the day in the school. This would reduce the possibility of the spread of the infection, if any, to a much larger number of students who would be in close contact with each other in such a gathering, ” it said. Earlier in the day, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad told a group of senior journalists that morning assemblies, where students come in close contact, could become a source for spread of the virus and it should be dispensed with. “It is also being made mandatory for each teacher to go from seat to seat in the class to check for symptoms of flu, identify the student and immediately sent him or her back with the advice that they should stay at home for a week,” Azad said. The guidelines left it to the schools to use their own judgement for any type of temporary closure in the event of wide spread of swine flu in the institution. “Closure of schools has not been recommended by the Centre for Disease Control, Atlanta, USA,” the guideline said adding it is easier in schools to detect if any student has flu symptoms. “Children will play and mix with public in various places and at social gathering and there will be nobody to advise them or prevent such incidentsin schools, there will be a teacher who will be able to detect their symptoms everyday at the earliest,” it said. According to the guidelines, if a student is detected with flu symptoms, he or she should be referred immediately to the medical facility of the school and advise them to stay at home for seven days and observe strict discipline of home isolation. “The onus of observance of discipline of isolation henceforth is shifted to the parents and school authorities should accordingly write a letter to the parents,” it said. If students, teachers and other employees develop flu-like symptoms, they should be advised to stay at home and consult a doctor. “School authorities should not insist on production of medical certificate from such preventive absentees,” it said. For hostellers, the school authority should monitor the health status of students as well as the other ancillary staff there on a regular basis. It also said the hostels should not be closed or students be sent back in case there is a suspected case. “School should (also) discourage excursion of the students to the affected countries,” the guideline said. However, it said, if students go on tour to affected countries, they should be thoroughly examined on return before permitting attendance in the class. “If there is one suspect case of H1N1, then the whole group should be kept under isolation at home and their health status should be regularly watched,” it said. The guidelines also said if students, teachers or other employees who are suffering from chronic diseases develop flu-like symptoms, then they should be immediately taken to the medical officer of the school. “Mostly, such patients will be kept in home isolation,” it said. All schools should observe regular cleaning of their campus with cleaner they ordinarily use so that all the droplets and shredding from any unnoticed mildly infected students or employees are taken care of. All the schools should display ‘Do’s and Dont’s’ for H1N1 infection at prominent places in the campus besides circulating pamphlets on swine flu to students. Students, teachers and other employees are advised to observe strict cough and sneeze etiquette, i.e., use tissue while sneezing and coughing. “The tissue paper so used should be kept in a separate plastic bag so that it can be disposed of safely,” the guidelines added. http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=26121cid=10 joego...@yahoo.co.uk for Goa NRI related info... http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/ For Goan Video Clips http://youtube.com/joeukgoa In Goa, Dial 1 0 8 For Hospital, Police, Fire etc

Poet Luís Vaz de Camões wrote the book, ‘Os Lusíadas’ (The Lusiads), in Homeric fashion. It throws light on the voyage that changed world history and offers glimpses into life in Zamorin’s Calicut. Considered Portugal #8217;s national epic, it is compared to Virgil’s ‘Aeneid’, and Homer’s ‘Iliad’ and ‘Odyssey’. Camoes was one of the first major European writers to cross the equator. As a soldier, prisoner and ship-wreck survivor, he knew first-hand about voyages. ‘The Lusiads’ was printed three years after the author returned from the Indies. A series of lectures by Manuel Ferro of the University of Coimbra in Portugal, which began at St. Thomas College here on Monday, will refer to the historical and literary importance of ‘The Lusiads’. “The epic poem will be of great interest to Malayalis. Its descriptive passages tell us of the palace of the Zamorin. The poem has been translated into Konkani. It is yet to be translated into Malayalam,” said C. J. Davees of the Centre for Lusofone Studies, introducing the lecture series. The series is a part of promoting Portuguese studies in Thrissur. The Goa-based Oriental Foundation has donated 600 Protuguese books to St. Thomas College. “The only person in Thrissur who reads them is me,” Mr. Davees said. In his introductory lecture on Portuguese literature, Prof. Ferro explained how the literature of Portugal was distinguished by a wealth of lyric poetry and historical writing documenting Portugal’s conquests. He referred to the Cantigas or ancient love songs of Portugal. About 2,000 have been preserved in a collection, ‘The Vatican Song Book’. Prof. Ferro recited a song by King Denis, ‘Aye flowers, aye flowers all of the green pine, what tidings have ye of this lover of mine?’ The moral and allegorical Renaissance drama of Gil Vicente, the 19th-century realist novels of José Maria de Eça de Queirós and Fernando Pessoas poetry have taken the glory of Portuguese literature outside the boundaries of Portugal. There was a resurgence in Portuguese poetry and novel in the 1970s. The popularity of Portugal’s literature reached its height with Jose Saramago winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998. From Tuesday through Friday, Prof. Ferro will lecture on ‘The St. Thomas episode in ‘Lusiads’, ‘Camoes’ colloquies with Lusophony’, ‘Manuel Alegre’s and Jose Saramago’s Camoes’ and ‘The Indian community in Portugal. Spacious 3 bedroom flat (3BHK)available for sale in upscale area near Miramar beach Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com Rico, I am in perfect agreement with you with respect to condolences to the family. What I was answering was Joe's question: why more and more people venture into the sea at Miramar in the absence of lifeguards, and you took me out of context. What I am getting at is the attitude of youth, who needlessly put their lives at risk. Unfortunately, Without being regional, I do see, unfortunately, us brown-skins (and other Asians for that matter) taking unnecessary risks, perhaps in trying to imitate the more experienced people. Just today I saw a true-life TV episode on Sydney's beaches with three Asian men being rescued from the sea. I have been taught by my parents (and my father was a good swimmer in his days) to treat the sea with respect, and never take chances. It sometimes appears that most people who have never seen the sea think of it as a large swimming pool, not knowing it can be treacherous what with waves and creatures that it can harbour, like jellyfish. Now in this case, I understand the businessman took a kayak into the waves, without any safety gear. Now, even experienced white-water rafters wear floatation devices and other safety equipment, and it would be a foolhardy person who would go into rough seas without adequate protection. Apparently. going by the news, the friends told the police, “He would never wear a life jacket. When we insisted that he wear it before going kayaking, he would tease us and say that while we might be scared, he isn’t.” - now if that isn't bravado, I don't know what is. Even if there were life-guards, from my point of view, it would have been rather difficult to save the man without adequate means to do so (e.g. inflatable motor-craft) in, what appears to have been, a rip current (a rip is a strong current of water running out to sea - http://www.scienceofthesurf.com/SOSFact_Sheet_Rip.pdf). The structures you talk of is education. Instruct people to swim *well* in relatively calm waters before they venture out to sea, and teach them to repect the waves.Teach people what to do if they get ino difficulty (signs that a life-guard can recognise that they are in difficulty), the meaning of various flags, etc. And always have people to look out for you if you do venture into deeper waters, as life-guards may not always see you, especially if you suddenly disappear. http://www.safewatersports.co.uk/SwimmingintheSea.html I do hope you understand my perspective. Gabriel. PS I understand jellyfish are now pretty common aroung Goa's beaches. Mario responds: The REAL facts are that there is a vast difference between the 47 million people who don't have health insurance at any given point in time and the 15 million or so who cannot get insurance because of no fault of their own. These are the Americans who are hard core uninsurables who need help and should get it as was outlined in: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-August/181657.html Mervyn wrote: Lastly, US residents who do not have medical insurance are in that situation because they CANNOT obtain the insurance. In contrast, every person in Ontario gets free health coverage when they arrive. This is regardless of whether they have contributed to the tax system or not. Mario responds: Here is what these residents in Ontario get, for free: http://www.news-medical.net/news/2005/10/24/13988.aspx Here is what is REALLY happening across Canada: http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5jbjzPEY0Y3bvRD335rGu_Z3KXoQw This is what Dr. Ann Doig, the incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association, had to say, We all agree that the system is imploding, we all agree that things are more precarious than perhaps Canadians realize, The Goan Canadians who have posted gushing/angry/defensive posts recently about the Canadian health care system sound like the Canadians Dr. Doig is referring to when she says, ...things are more precarious than perhaps Canadians realize. Goanetters should remember these reports when they see suggestions that the American system, which has enough problems of its own, albeit solvable problems of insurance coverage for 5% of its citizens, needs to copy the struggling Canadian system where things are precarious. While the Canadian government-run system obviously helps many people much of the time, especially when they are well, if they get a serious illness needing sophisticated tests and procedures they end up on waiting lists controlled by government bureaucrats because their system does not have adequate capabilities to treat everyone immediately. These inadequate capabilities is one major reason why their system costs less. In return for the lower cost they get rationed care. On the other hand, every resident in the expensive US system has access to emergency medical treatments at no cost, WITH NO WAITING LISTS, even if they cannot afford to pay or have no health insurance. However a better solution must be worked out for the 15 million or so uninsurables. Helping those who cannot help themselves is a legitimate and good use of the fruits of capitalism and the free market system. My preference would be for a free market private industry solution with tax incentives to handle the additional financial risk but avoid the inefficiencies inherent in any government run system.

Are you the commentator Rad21 on the Huffington Post blog by any chance? Many of the ideas you express, and the statements you make are verbatim from his comments. Please see: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/users/profile/rad21?action=comments Mario observes: Santosh, I don't know about Rad21, but the Huffington Post has been Gilbert's favorite, if not only, source of information for quite some time now. I guess I may have to wait until Rad21 addresses the question I raised about whether forcing the private insurance companies to accept patients with pre-existing conditions, which would be like buying auto insurance after an accident, will effectively put them out of business: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-August/181613.html Excerpt: Hey, Gilbert, If the government imposes an elimination of restrictions like pre-existing illness and demands guaranteed choice of coverage, why would people not wait until they had a serious illness before demanding to be insured, and paying for their own coughs and colds in the meantime? And what would that do to the actuarial estimates upon which sound insurance policies are based? Aren't such impositions a transparent method of putting private insurance companies out of business? [end of excerpt] Gilbert wrote: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-August/181676.html Excerpt: The 47 million uninsured (27% of the population under age 65) Mario responds: This 47 million number of uninsured was clearly shown to be a gross exaggeration by far left wing demagogues of whom American taxpayers really need to use common sense and logic in helping. [end of excerpt] Mario responds: A dirty little secret is that Obama has no plan. He is riding on the coat-tails of plans being developed by the House and Senate while pushing for more government intervention in the health care system, some of which he is now backing away from. Thus, endorsing Obama's efforts is not the same as endorsing any specific plan, just a pious platitude: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0809/26158.html Gilbert wrote: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-August/181657.html Short-term, significant savings (i.e no additional dollars needed) can be achieved Mario responds: Perhaps if Gilbert were able to convince Obama to dump his knee-jerk ideology that the government can solve this issue instead of coordinating an effort to find a solution, we may get short term savings:-)) Unfortunately, the House plan that has been scored by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office says that the effect on the federal deficit will be $1.042 trillion over “ten years”, though the program really gets going in 2015 so its more like a 5 year score. I hope Gilbert and his cronies caught this little detail: THE PROGRAM REALLY GETS GOING IN 2015, SO THE FINANCIAL DAMAGE WILL TAKE PLACE AFTER OBAMA LEAVES OFFICE. YET HE WAS PUSHING FOR PASSAGE BY THE END OF JULY BEFORE ANYONE HAD HAD TIME TO EVEN READ ANY OF THE PROPOSALS BY SAYING THAT THIS LEGISLATION WAS SUPER-URGENT.

Fred, whose favorite philosopher is Karl Marx whose anti-capitalist theories were antithetical to religion and religious freedom, writes that he doesn't think the Church has a job in supporting capitalism. Does Fred think the Vatican is surviving on donations from the wilting fruits of socialism? The Vatican should stay the heck out of economics because it is simply not its job. Even the Bible distinguished between God and Shiv..., ...er, Caesar. However, as part of its legitimate role in promoting religion, religious freedom, political freedom, maximizing one's natural gifts as the Bible teaches, and providing a better quality of life for the downtrodden, if the Vatican supports anything it should be supporting capitalism for three reasons: a) The more capitalist the country the better the quality of life for more people most of the time than any other system yet devised, while also preserving political freedoms for its citizens. b) Capitalist leaning countries also have guarantees of religious freedom, or the freedom to not follow any particular religion. c) The citizens of capitalist leaning countries provide the Vatican with a cushy lifestyle and clerics in general with most of the income that enables them to do whatever they do.

Chodd uddta is akin to being uppity, arrogant -- the buddta, to do with the fall. So its if a bird flies on high, and across water, the chances of getting back are slim. Come to think of it, is there anyone on Goanet who he has not accused of being a Marxist! ii) Global Cooling: His many posts on goanet claiming that the planet was actually growing cooler (which he has recently retracted). iii) The evils of socialized medicine for others, while he himself has milked the US socialized medical system and made unhealthy lifestyle choices to boot. iv) The US economy is sound and strongest in the world - just before the economic collapse last year! As the saying goes, the truth hurts. Marlon

America has learnt a lesson in 9/11, which just didn't shake the pants off the Americans, it shook the whole world and has anything else has happened in America, since then ? No, because they treat National Security as above one and all. How many lessons does India need, to boost up it's National Security, surely 9/11 wasn't enough because we let 11/26 happen and we have still not learnt. The Ex-President Hon. Mr Kalam did not utter a word when he was subjected to the search despite the privileges he carried, and who is SRK to object to it, he may be an icon in India but to America, he just an ordinary Indian or world citizen, should the world have two types of security checks, one for the elite and one for the common man ? Can't the elite be used by terrorists through blackmail or threat to family, to do the needful. People, wake up to the reality of world terrorism, no body, absolutely no body is above the law or above National Security. SRK could have done well to zip his lips and adhere to the security code and not make it a religious issue, it is indeed wrong to target a particular religion but try to see the prospective from Americas point of view, with the nightmares of 9/11 they could be seeing OBL in every one that enters their country, are they left with any choice ? Or can they ever afford to relax ? The Indian Authorities instead of tying themselves in knots over the issue should learn from their counterparts in the USA and clean up their act and do like wise where National Security is concerned. Just a couple of days back there were reports that an elite member of Goa's ministry used the guards at the Selaulim Dam as punching bags just because they did not allow his relatives to enter a sensitive area of the dam ? Is this expected of the Americans too ? * G * O * A * N * E * T C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * Apartment for sale in Campal/Miramar area, Panaji, Goa. Spacious 3 bedroom flat (3BHK)available for sale in upscale area near Miramar beach Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com Books in Goa: promises and perils of publishing By Frederick Noronha [For Goa Today] Selma Carvalho spent part of her Goa holiday trying to finish a book dealing with stories of Goan migration. The UK-based mother of a three-year-old believes her work has inputs that could help Goans better understand their own complex reality. Carvalho is one of a growing trend of writers bringing Goa-centric work to the fore. An increasing number of books on Goa is getting into print, here and elsewhere. Goa, the size of an average Indian district, has an amazing set of numbers on its side. Outside of the metros, it is probably the most intensely published region nationwide, given its size. Each year, between 200 to 250 books are being published in Goa alone. Out of these, about 70% are in Konkani, notes Central Library curator Carlos Fernandes. Fernandes, a soft-spoken man with a reputation for his quiet efficiency, sits at the helm of the oldest public library in South Asia. The Central Library was set up as the Publica Livraria in 1832, but has been overtaken by the metros across India. Formerly with the Goa Engineering College, Fernandes believes that good writers can help sell books in a world where a market exists and technology has made things simple -- you can layout a book on your desktop computer at home. The trickle is turning into a flood. Old-timers remember the situation in the 1980s, when there would be just a handful of Goa-related books visible at exhibitions and sales. Today, there are literally dozens, if not a few hundred books on Goa in print. That is, if you know where to find them. Goa is in a unique situation, avers Vivek Menezes, a Goan expat who returned home while in his 30s. He has published two books, that offer overviews of music and art in Goa. Yet the market is ridiculed. People make false assumptions about Goa. His suggestion is that much more is possible. Miramar-based Menezes, who can be often found in the mornings working hard at writing from his office near Panjim's municipal garden, sees Goa as a potentially large and lucrative market. He points to the tourist purchases of local books. Besides, Goa is on top of the national food-chain in terms of interest and visibility. Menezes argues: You have all the ingredients in place for huge growth; but we're told that Goa is too small and cannot sustain! We have a huge captive audience. In the last two to three years, due to the presence of (top national writers like) Amitav Ghosh (who have homes in Goa), the writing community is also getting built up. * * * Simultaneously, the market for Goa books has opened up in recent years. This is not to say that everything is gung-ho. There are big challenges; but opportunity is now felt more strongly than ever before. Outlets are coming up in Goa, in a shape and size that marks a dramatic departure from the conservative, play-it-safe past. Peter Nazareth, the editor of an anthology of Goan writing (Goan Literature: A Modern Reader, Journal of South Asian Literature Winter-Spring 1983) was surprised on encountering online videos about a couple of bookstores in Goa. He wrote: I am astounded! They look like very good bookstores with many, many books. (One belonging to Khalil Ahmed) looks as good as the best bookstore in Iowa City, which is the city of writing in the US. Broadway at Sant Inez in Panjim was set up by Khalil Ahmed, who decades back looked after the Goa market while working for major publishers in New Delhi. Today, Broadway is into publishing too, and has earned a reputation for its special counters that offer books at bargain prices. Khalil Ahmed runs it with son Faheem, in his twenties. Besides this, there are others like the Coutinhos of Margao, whose sprawling premises in an old-styled Goan house is in the heart of the city. Located behind the Margao main post office, it is called Golden Heart Emporium. In one room, a number of Goa-related books lie crowded in shelves, vying for the reader's attention. Special 'Goa sections' for local bookshops are a fairly recent trend though. Bookshops that first made their Goa book sections visible included the Other India Bookstore, a charming place almost hidden -- but widely written about in travel guides and known in alternative Indian publishing circles -- above the old Mapusa

[Goanet] The PEN All-India Centre: Statement condemning repression of cultural practice in Goa
* G * O * A * N * E * T C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * Apartment for sale in Campal/Miramar area, Panaji, Goa. Spacious 3 bedroom flat (3BHK)available for sale in upscale area near Miramar beach Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com 18 August 2009 Dear Friends and Colleagues, We write to condemn, in the strongest terms, the recent activities of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) in Goa. Activists of the HJS have demanded that a painting by M F Husain, hanging in the Goa State Museum, be taken down. They have also demanded the closure of an exhibition of contemporary interpretations of Ganesha by the artist Subodh Kerkar. We would like to make three points in this regard. First: Such repression of cultural practice cannot be permitted in a society that calls itself civilised, and there is no reason why outfits like the HJS should get away with the claim that they speak for “millions of Hindus”. Among these millions of Hindus are communities whose popular art forms have consistently treated the gods and goddesses of Hinduism as normal individuals with failings and foibles, subject to critique, irony and mockery. The paintings and prints of Kalighat, the scroll and puppet theatre of Pinguli, and the ritual performance of the Gondhal, all emerge from this vast popular stream of Hindu cultural practice. These are worlds of the imagination with which the rootless postmodern Hindu bourgeoisie has no connection, which is why it needs to produce an idealised, uncontaminated, unreal Hinduism to defend. Secondly: It is tragic that Goa – which has for millennia been a multicultural, multireligious and multiethnic environment – should be subjected to such aggressive political mobilisations based on the politics of identity. Have the storm-troopers of Hindutva not learned the lesson of the 2009 elections: That the people of India are sick of their violent and repressive approach to life and culture? Thirdly: These attacks on cultural expression come at a very sensitive moment in Goa’s history. They gain urgency when viewed against the backdrop of escalating suspicion of, and violence against, the state’s Muslim population. Goa’s demographic profile has changed considerably during the last 30 years, and it now hosts large numbers of ‘outsiders’ who have come there to find work: among them, Muslims from north Karnataka, but also Kashmiris, Hindu Kannadigas, and Biharis. The cultural aggression of the HJS must be seen in the larger context of increasing Goan hostility towards ‘outsiders’ and ‘dissent’ generally. Such illiberalism cuts against the warm, welcoming and culturally receptive image that Goa enjoys internationally. This rhetoric of ‘insider vs. outsider’ sounds particularly strange in Goa: a region that has been nourished, through the centuries, by immigrants from Kashmir, Kanauj, Karnataka, Bengal, Iran, China, Portugal, and Eastern Africa, among other places. Spacious 3 bedroom flat (3BHK)available for sale in upscale area near Miramar beach Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com Foreign trips aimed to boost ties with emigrants: Eduardo Wednesday, 19 August 2009 00:45 PANAJI: Stating that during the last four years, he had undertaken only four foreign trips, two to Gulf countries, one to Mozambique and Kenya, and another one to Canada, the Commissioner for NRI Affairs, Mr Eduardo Faleiro on Tuesday clarified that the visits were organised as they were very much necessary. Replying to the allegations from a section of press as regards funding of the Office of the Commissioner for NRI Affairs and his foreign trips, Mr Faleiro said that as per the recommendation of the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, the state government had made a budgetary allocation of Rs 3 crore for his office. I discussed this with the then Chief Secretary, and told him that I would require only minimum staff but with the highest level of efficiency, Mr Faleiro said, pointing out that the budgetary allocation was reduced to Rs one crore, and even this reduced allocation was never utilised fully in any single year. As for my foreign tours, Mr Faleiro said, In the Gulf, we have presently the highest number of our expatriates and my visit to Mozambique and Kenya was the first ever by a Goan official to those countries after Liberation. We have in East Africa a large number of people of Goan origin and it was necessary to remind them that whatever their present nationality, they should not forget their roots and to reassure them that we will help them to every extent possible, if and when necessary, he added. I visited Canada to participate in the annual Global Goans Convention, which we seek to project as the single meeting point of Goans across the world, Mr Faleiro said, adding My visits strengthened the contact between our emigrants and our Embassies and High Commissions in those countries, and this is obviously very useful to our people. In all those countries I met senior Ministers of the respective governments and discussed with them bilateral issues at the request of our Ministry of External Affairs, Mr Faleiro stated, maintaining that this helped our bilateral relations. After each of these visits, I made recommendations to our Prime Minster, Foreign Minister and Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs, which were much appreciated and some of these recommendations have now been accepted and implemented, he informed. It was finally informed that Mr Faleiro also made several visits abroad, to participate in international conferences sponsored by non-governmental organisations abroad, without any financial liability whatsoever to the government. Next October I shall go to Taiwan to participate in a conference and would like to meet Goans that may live there, the Commissioner for NRI Affairs said, noting that the visit would be rather difficult as India does not have an Embassy or Consulate in that country. However, Goans in Taiwan who read this on the Internet may please contact me, he appealed. http://www.navhindtimes.in/news/goa-news/2148-foreign-trips-aimed-to-boost-ties-with-emigrants-eduardo

Herald contacted the MLAs to get their views. Congress MLA Pratap Gawas when contacted by this paper said, some activists of HJS had contacted him but he did not assure any support to their campaign. I told them I would speak to the doctor first, he said and I did speak to Dr Kerkar who clarified to me that he is not anti-Hindu. On the other hand BJP which is otherwise in the forefront lending support to organisations like HJS is rather quite, this time. When asked whether it is supporting HJS on its stand against Dr Kerkar , BJP State President Shripad Naik said, party has not taken any decision yet. However, BJP MLA Dayanand Mandrekar was very critical of Dr Kerkar and said he fully supports campaign started by HJS against Dr Kerkar. Another BJP MLA Vijay Pai Khot though said, there is no need for any agitation said caricatures by Dr Kerkar has hurt sentiments of Hindus. It was not right on the part of Dr Kerkar to draw such caricatures of Lord Ganesha, he felt. The Congress MLA Sham Satardekar was also contacted by HJS and claimed to have said, Kerkar has to be forced to close down his exhibition. When contacted by this paper, he said , he is against Kerkar for what he has done. http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=26168cid=26
