[ha-Safran]: Do a Mitzvah - Make a Minyan!
If you wonder what the appeal is of early morning davening, consider coming to a minyan at convention! The egalitarian minyan especially welcomes participants who are not regular daveners to come and maybe even experiment. Want to wear a tallit? There will be extras available. Curious about tefillin? You can try them on. If you've never had an aliyah, convention is a safe place to do it for the first time. Minyanim are at 6:45 am every day: orthodox in Huronie A, egalitarian in Huronie B. Feel free to let me know ahead of time if you'd like to try something new at the egalitarian minyan, or simply come at 6:45 am on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. See you there! [ha-Safran]: Why 10 for a minyan?
In this week's Torah portion, Sh'lach l'kha, Moses sends a team of 12 scouts one representative from each of the tribes to scope out the land of Canaan. Only Joshua and Caleb return with a positive report. God then asks (Numbers 14:27), "How long will this evil 'assembly' provoke [the Jewish nation] to complain against Me?" From the use of the word eidah, "assembly," to refer to that group of ten, the rabbinic sages deduced that an eidah, a congregation, must consist of at least ten people. Next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 6:45 am, we will have two minyanim: orthodox in room Huronie A and egalitarian in room Huronie B. The orthodox minyan needs 10 men, and the egal minyan needs 10 men and women in order for people to say all the morning prayers and read from the Torah, and in order for mouners to say Kaddish. Please consider participating in a minyan one morning of convention. If there are ten participants for each minyan at 6:45 am, both services can begin promptly and end in time for a leisurely breakfast. Shalom l'kulam, I am organizing the egalitarian minyanim at Convention you'll hear more from me about that and I'm eager to introduce a new siddur, Siddur Eit Ratzon by Dr. Joseph Rosenstein. We only need about a dozen of them, but the cost and hassle of shipping them to Montreal is prohibitive. I suspect Rachel Kamin did mean "A Secret," the film version of Memory by Philippe Grimbert. The book's title in the original French was Un Secret. Fellow synagogue librarians, How do you manage your DVD collections? Do you leave DVD's in their cases, or keep them behind the desk? Do you assign them call numbers or categorize them another way? I'm very short of space, so I'm thinking of removing them all and replacing the titles that I think people will borrow with DVD's. Does anyone have advice to offer on the subject? [ha-Safran]: Elazar question
I am in the process of switching our library to Elazar classification, which makes much more sense for the collection on the whole than Dewey. Question: how to classify books that are not obviously Jewish. My current challenge is Abigail Yasgur's Max Said Yes! Begin forwarded message: You are invited to participate in an interesting and entertaining survey about language. Essentially, we're asking about the spread of Yiddish (and some Hebrew) among English speakers in North America. Why do some people say "temple" while others say "shul"? Who prefers biblical names for their babies? Your responses will help us answer these and other questions, and you might learn something about yourself in the process. [ha-Safran]: Bindery commendation
Friends, I have just unpacked a shipment of books that I sent to be rebound and/or repaired at the Bridgeport National Bindery. The quality of the work exceeded my highest expectations. I had sent books with a variety of problems, among them: One book, with just one loose signature, was repaired without any visible alteration. An old monograph has a new fabric cover, with title and author stamped in gold on spine and front cover. Several hardcover books were given new, laminated covers with digitized images of their original covers or dust jackets. Best of all, battered paperback copies of Gerda Weissman Klein's Promise of a New Spring, now out-of-print, were converted to hardcover books with laminated covers, also with digitized i div> For the library, the cost of rebinding was approximately $11/volume. Individuals may send books for rebinding for approx. $33/volume. For valuable books, the bindery has a conservator available to work on them. In addition to doing fine work, the bindery was attentive and responsive to questions and communication, whether by email or by phone. I recommend the Bridgeport National Bindery without reservation. (Note that the name is Pilichowski, w/ an i after the L.) The painting will be the first item that comes up. Unfortunately, the quality of the online image is not great. It's an enormous painting and a small image. The original is phenomenal in its detail. You can recognize each of the dignitaries present on the dais. [ha-Safran]: Kids' resources on Mishnaic sages
A 5th grade Judaic studies teacher is going to have her students - working in teams - study some of the major Tanna'im, most likely some but not all of Hillel, Akiba, Yohanan ben Zakkai, Elazar ben Azariah, Tarfon, Rabban Gamliel II, Yehudah ha-Nasi. They will be presenting their work in a variety of formats, e.g., a report, a skit, a mock newspaper article. I'm compiling resources for them, and most of what I find is aimed at adults. Can anyone recommend sources - written, recorded, online, etc. - at a 5th grade or even middle school level? Of course the teacher told me about this today, and the kids are starting the project tomorrow, so I'd love to hear from you sooner rather than later. Thanks in advance! Marga ** Marga Hirsch Library/Media Specialist Perelman Jewish Day School Stern Center - Wynnewood, PA Forman Center - Melrose Park, PA -Original Message- From: Miryam Pomerantz Sent: Monday, February 13, 2006 5:17 PM Hi, As you may know, the Jewish Book Council runs many projects, in addition to scheduling author events at Jewish book festival through the Jewish Book NETWORK. This spring, we are launching a new project, unlike any of our current ones, but also dedicated to the promotion of Jewish literature and writing and its legacy. In May, the Jewish Book Council will co-sponsor, with the Mayanot Institute, the first "Israel in Print" birthright israel trip. The birthright israel program offers Jewish 18-26 year olds--who have not previously been on an organized, peer trip--a free 10-day trip to Israel to experience the country, learn about the history and culture, and just generally have an amazing, fun, whirlwind tour of Israel with their peers. Recently, "special interest" birthright trips have been forming, trips that tailor their itinieraries and gather a group of participants with a similar focus. This new "Israel in Print" is a focused on literature, journalism, and writing. It will include all of the standard elements of a birthright israel trip--like swimming in the Dead Sea, hiking Masada, taking jeep rides in the desert, visiting Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Tiberias, and Sfat--along with special activities. The partnership between Mayanot and Jewish Book Council will allow participants to see an Israel that most visitors never do - by meeting with Israel's most famous authors and journalists, respected, award-winning writers as well as the hottest up-and-coming young talent. We're very excited about this trip, but it's brand-new, and no one knows about it. Please help us spread the word. If you know of any Jewish 18-26 year old--students, grad students, friends--who is eligible for this trip and is interested in literature and journalism, please ask them to contact our office or visit www.mayanotisrael.com/jbc. The trip is tentatively scheduled for the end of May, after most universities are done for the year. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. We do have informational postcards that we could send to you to distribute, if you are interested. [ha-Safran]: Christmas and start of Hanukkah
I referred the question to a friend of mine who knows a great deal about the Jewish calendar. His response is below. Marga * Marga Hirsch 175 Upland Terrace Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004 610.668.9485 __ I'm pretty sure that the only time this CAN happen is on the 1st or 9th year of the 19-year cycle of Jewish leap years, which are the two latest years of the cycle with respect to the civil calendar. (If you divide the Jewish year by 19, the remainder has to be 1 or 9.) 5766 is the 9th year of the current cycle. But the Hanukkah/Christmas thing doesn't happen each time there's a year 1 or a year 9, due both to civil leap years and to the occasional need to add or subtract one day from the Jewish year. So what do you mean by "falling on Christmas"? If you mean that the first candle is on the 25th, then that will next happen in 5785 (2024, "year 9") and in 5796 (2035, "year 1"). But if you also count the first candle being lit on Christmas Eve, then that will next happen on the next "year 1": 5777 (2016). Furthermore, in 5804 (2043, "year 9"), the first candle will be on December 26th! That might be the latest possible start date for Hanukkah, I'm not sure. Of course, all of the above is invalid if either the mashiach comes before then, or if a gigantic meteor comes before then and disrupts all the astronomical calculations that have been done for the future. Though in either of these cases, whether Hanukkah and Christmas coincide or not will be the last thing on our minds. RE: [ha-Safran]: Defining what is Jewish
Hevre, The title "Kaddish for Grandpa in the Name of Jesus Amen" is most unfortunate - I can't understand how an editor allowed it - but the book in no way encourages intermarriage. On the contrary, it supports conversion. The father in the book converted to Judaism. He is Jewish. He is a partner in a Jewish marriage, not an intermarriage. I assume that if the author and editor had titled the book "Two Services for Grandpa," it would be easier to buy. RE: [ha-Safran]: What is Happening to AJL?
I have not seen the books mentioned in the original post, so I can't comment on their eligibility for an award or their suitability for inclusion in one collection or another on the basis of their particular merits. However, I want to register my opinion that to provide Jewish children with books that reflect their reality, we must be open to stories of interfaith families. For the last year and a half I have been the coordinator of The Rabbi Morris Goodblatt Academy of the Philadelphia Region of the Rabbinical Assembly. We offer 30 weeks of Hebrew and Judaica instruction to individuals who are interested in conversion within the Conservative movement. Many of our students are engaged. After conversion, they are married with Huppah and Kiddushin. They will, God willing, be blessed with children whom they will raise as Jews. Those children will have one set of grandparents who celebrate Christmas. When one of those grandparents passes away, the Jewish grandchildren will participate in the funeral, burial, and mourning. Not every interfaith family includes an interfaith marriage. [ha-Safran]: Halting a destructive children's book
Chevre, The writer of the following letter is a former public librarian in British Columbia and now the co-owner of Canadas largest and most successful childrens bookstore. She showed me the letter because we are family, and I asked her permission to post it to Hasafran. If any of you have an opportunity to preview the book she describes below, I hope you will join her in asking the publisher to reconsider its release. Marga Hirsch -Original Message- From: Phyllis Simon [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, July 25, 2003 11:14 AM Subject: Macmillan letter Dear Ms. Price: I am the co-owner of Canadas largest and most successful childrens bookstore called Kidsbooks. Part of what has made us thrive is our commitment to promoting excellence in literature, and in bringing to our customersattentions books they might not otherwise encounter. During twenty years of business I have actively promoted many Macmillan titles, including those written by Elizabeth Laird. In fact, in my opinion her recent book The Garbage King is an outstanding novel that I have presented at several teachersevents as one of the best books of the year. However, when the HB Fenn representative showed me the advance flyer for A Little Piece of Ground written by Elizabeth Laird in conjunction with a Palestinian writer, alarm bells sounded in my head almost immediately. Why was I concerned? I worried that the book might be decidedly one-sided, given the author collaboration and the hype in the flyer (Macmillans decision to rush publication, the endorsement by Childrens Laureate Michael Morpurgo, and the ludicrous comment by the book editor). I therefore asked for an advance reading copy before I placed my order. I hoped Id not feel the need to take it one step further, and question the wisdom of it being published altogether. After reading the book, I find the situation is actually much worse than I had imagined it might be, and I am left with a profound sense of shock and disgust at the irresponsible decision to publish what I feel is a racist, inflammatory and totally one-sided piece of propaganda at a time when efforts are being made to resolve this conflict. In fact, I am certain that neither Macmillan nor any other childrens publisher in the democratic world would ever agree to release a similar diatribe demonizing the Palestinians as this book vilifies the Israelis. What is incomprehensible to me is that there is not even one mildly positive portrait of an Israeli in the entire book; the characters refer to suicide bombings, in which, need I remind you, children and innocent people are blown up, as bombing operations; in one scene, the protagonists father burns the Israeli flag to ashes while in contrast the Palestinian flag is used as the rallying point for the children in the story. Israeli tanks even kill a kitten, for Gods sake!! And these are just a few of the many obvious examples of single-sided misrepresentations of this extremely complex issue. If this were a book for adults, I would say it could be biased, unfair, whatever. In that case, the book would have to stand up to the scrutiny of reviewers and mature readers. A Little Piece of Ground, however, is for children, the overwhelming number of whom clearly havent a clue about this conflict, and thus depend on books like this for the opinions they form about what goes on in the Middle East. I can only imagine what they think after reading this blatant piece of hate-fomenting propaganda. Although it is fashionable these days to excoriate the Israelis whilst championing the cause of the Palestinians, there surely is no doubt that there are many Israelis and Palestinians who work together and who respect each other. Yet, these authors purposely chose not to include a single such peace-seeking character, not even a hint that such people exist, in this book. You must ask yourself what agenda they have in choosing to paint so unbalanced a picture for children. And what role does Macmillan end up playing in backing this totally misguided endeavor? I urge you in the strongest possible terms to take a second look at A Little Piece of Ground before you take the irreversible step of releasing such a damaging book.
