[ha-Safran] AJL has NOT endorsed any candidate for ALA President

2022-04-06 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield via Hasafran
Dear Friends,

A recent posting on HaSafran has led to a misunderstanding that AJL as an
organization has endorsed a candidate for ALA President. Nothing could be
farther from the truth.

AJL is remaining neutral in ALA's election and is looking forward to
working with the current and future presidents of ALA-whoever that may
be-on issues of importance to our members.

We deeply appreciate the willingness of Emily Drabinski and Kelvin Watson to
make themselves available to talk to AJL members a few months ago. We look
forward to working with whoever becomes the new ALA Prsident in the future
on projects that will benefit ALA and AJL.

You can view the videos of both candidates' interviews here:
Emily Drabinsky:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq9oNUjgGaQ__;!!KGKeukY!iPuhL2sYAzoJ6xgow01da423-YIAcNT21o1RuY9gjzvHnx0veeyb54FcuMm8wTR3l3FLECm86JZD4vg$

Kelvin Watson:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYy9PCzGYO0&t=20s__;!!KGKeukY!iPuhL2sYAzoJ6xgow01da423-YIAcNT21o1RuY9gjzvHnx0veeyb54FcuMm8wTR3l3FLECm8HXseNqU$

Again, AJL has not endorsed a candidate for ALA President or any other
position in ALA during this current election. We regret this
misunderstanding, and apologize to anyone who was hurt as a result of the
post that reflected the views of a single individual, and not those of AJL.

In peace and friendship,

Kathy B.

Re: [ha-Safran] Mazel Tov!

2022-02-06 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield via Hasafran
Being the President of AJL has many perks, but I never thought that one of
them would be to announce the Sydney Taylor Award and Honor winners at
the American Library Association's Youth Media Awards. Nor did I ever
dream that I would have the joy of announcing the name of my former SSCPL
VP, Past Sydney Taylor Chair, and dear friend, Susan Kusel, as the WINNER
of the Picture Book Award. I am so happy that this wonderful book won. I
hope it will grace the shelves of Jewish and secular libraries for years to
come as the "go to" Passover Book.

Kol HaKavod, Susan!

And Kol HaKavod to the Sydney Taylor Awards Committee for
all their exceptional choices. We are all so very proud of this year's
list.

[ha-Safran] Fwd: Thank you for AJL's help. "The Jewish Education of Today’s Jewish Leadership" Report

2022-02-05 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield via Hasafran
Hi all,

About a year ago, I forwarded a survey on the Jewish education of American
Jewish leaders to Hasafran. I received an email yesterday that our help
was greatly appreciated and a real contribution. The summary of and a link
to the research report was shared with me, and I am forwarding it to all of
you.

Thank you so much for your participation.

Kathy B.

*“The Jewish Education of Today’s Jewish Leadership: Day Schools, Overnight
Camps, & Other Educational Experiences among Lay & Professional Jewish
Communal Leaders.”*

For the full report on the survey of over 2,000 American Jewish communal
leaders, both lay and professional, use this LINK
.

For a quick summary, see below.

*SUMMARY*

*The Jewish Education of Today’s Jewish Leadership:*

*Day Schools, Overnight Camps, & Other Educational Experiences among*

*Lay & Professional Jewish Communal Leaders*

Research Success Technologies Ltd.

Sponsored by: Keren Keshet, Mem Bernstein, Arthur Fried, Trustees

February 2022

This study focuses on the educational patterns of Jewish leaders, both lay
and professional. It asks: How were today’s Jewish leaders educated in
their childhood and adolescent years? How do the patterns differ by
denomination, political identity, age, and leadership sector?

To address these questions, Keren Keshet engaged Research Success
Technologies Ltd. of Hannaton, Israel to undertake an Internet survey of
American Jewish communal leaders, lay and professional. The opt-in sample
for this survey consists of 2,079 respondents who lead American Jewish
organizations of all sorts, or have served in such lay or professional
capacities, or whose social profiles closely approximate communal leaders.
They lead schools, congregations, camps, federations, advocacy groups,
women organizations, academic bodies in Jewish Studies, social service
agencies, and others as well.

*Jewish Education is Widespread among Jewish Leaders*

The adults now in Jewish leadership positions were widely exposed in their
youth to numerous educational experiences, far higher than the Jewish
public at large. As many as a third went to Jewish day schools from grades
K through 8, and 2/3 of them – or 23% of the total -- continued on with day
schools during their high school years. In addition, 59% went to overnight
Jewish summer camp. Similar numbers participated in such influential
experiences as Jewish youth groups, a third in part-time Hebrew high
schools, a third in high school age trips to Israel, while about half took
Jewish Studies courses in college, and almost as many participated in
Hillel or other Jewish campus groups. Clearly, Jewish education in
childhood, teen and college years is a central part of the life-trajectory
of almost all of those who choose to become professional and lay leaders in
the Jewish community.

*The Increasing Importance of Jewish Education over Time*

Younger Jewish leaders are more Jewishly educated than their older
counterparts, meaning that Jewish leadership is increasingly educated as
Jews. Just a quarter of Jewish leaders between the ages of 55-64 had
attended a Jewish day school, while among those twenty years their junior,
the figure rises to 44 percent. For overnight Jewish summer camps, 56
percent of the older leaders and 65 percent of the younger ones attended a
Jewish summer camp. Triple the number of younger leaders as compared with
older ones attended Jewish pre-schools; double the number attended Jewish
day camps, organized teen trips to Israel and Hillel programs; and
significantly more younger leaders attended Hebrew high schools, Jewish
youth groups, and college courses in Jewish studies. Birthright
participation also increases over the limited age span for which it has
been available. The only form of Jewish education that doesn’t increase
from older to younger leaders is part-time Hebrew school.

*Generational Leaps*

Among leaders with children aged 14 or older, we find remarkable
inter-generational leaps in Jewish educational participation. Day school
enrollment grows from 33% among the adults to 62% among their children. For
camp participation the rates go from 58% for the leaders when they were
children to 73% for their children. In fact, in EVERY leadership sector,
the children’s rates of enrollment in day schools and camps exceed those of
the parents. Moreover, all denominations display inter-generational
increases for both day school and overnight camp usage.

*Denominational Differences*

Patterns of Jewish education vary dramatically by denomination. For leaders
who identify as Orthodox, day school education in their childhood and teen
years is quite widespread. For the non-Orthodox, overnight Jewish camping
played an especially prominent and consequential role, as did other Jewish
educational experiences such as campus engagement, Jewish Studies class

[ha-Safran] JGirls Magazine Teen Board Applications

2021-02-24 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield via Hasafran
Dear Safranim,

A friend asked me to forward the information below to all of you. Please
forward to anyone you may know who might be interested.

Kathy B.

Hi,

I hope this finds you well and healthy.

*I wanted to be sure you know that applications for* *jGirls Magazine*
*’s 2021-2022 teen staff positions are now
open, and we continue to accept submissions in a variety of creative
formats on an ongoing basis.*

We are accepting applications
 now through April 11th
for our 2021-2022 teen editorial board & staff photography cohort from
girls and young women who will be in 10th-12th grades in the coming school
year.

*We are hosting a peer-led information session on Sunday, March 14th, from
4-5pm Eastern.*

jGirls is an online community and magazine by and for self-identifying
Jewish teenage girls and young women. jGirls' content is created by teens
and curated by a teen editorial board, and the magazine’s aesthetic is
shaped by teen staff photographers. (I've pasted more info below.)

Serving on the jGirls teen staff is both an exciting leadership training
program and a hands-on experiential position. jGirls editors and
photographers make a difference in the world by:

   - Building an online community of future Jewish female leaders.
   - Providing space for Jewish teenage girls and young women to make their
   voices heard.
   - Engaging in discussion across differences of background, opinion and
   perspective.

Applications are *due April 11th*. For more information and to apply, click
*here*
.

*Please share these opportunities with the teens you work with*:

   - Share easily from our postings on Facebook

   , Instagram
 and Twitter

.
   - Check out the blurb and graphic below for easy cutting/pasting into an
   announcement.
   - Access a flyer and more social media graphics and language here

   .

For those who want to get involved but aren’t ready to apply, we
accept *submissions
of creative materials* (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, art, photography, and
music) on an ongoing basis from girls ages 13-19. *Please note that we pay
our published teen writers/artists for their work.* For more information,
click *here*
.

jGirls is committed to the visibility and representation of the different
voices, perspectives and experiences that comprise our diverse Jewish
community. We actively encourage applicants and writers/artists who are
diverse in their Jewish identification, sexual orientation, gender
expression and identity, race, ethnicity, and abilities. If a teen is
unsure whether jGirls staff positions are open to their specific Jewish
and/or gender identity, we encourage them to check our FAQs for those
answers
 and more.

Please let me know if you have any questions or would like more information.

We look forward to hearing from the wonderful teens in your life.

Thank you so much!

Elizabeth

Thanks Donnie,

The Planning Committee is working hard to make our 2021 Virtual

I too attended the ALA Midwinter and was unimpressed, typing notes in the
chat is not the same as even a virtual room. Except for our AJL Schmooze &
BYO Nosh, where we actually got to interact with people.

Thank you so much for your kind words.

[ha-Safran] You are invited to participate in the 2021 Study of Leaders in American Jewish Life Today

2021-01-14 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield via Hasafran
I am sending this on behalf of the 2021 Jewish Leadership Study.

Dear AJL members,

We are pleased to invite you to participate in a new study of leaders in
Jewish life today. The study asks: Who are today's leaders – both lay and
professional? How were they educated and how did Jewish education play a
role in making them the leaders they are today?

These are the central questions asked in this 2021 Jewish Leadership Study,
sponsored by Keren Keshet, under the leadership of Mem Bernstein and Arthur
Fried, who also led the Avi Chai Foundation for more than two decades.

The survey that follows takes about 8 minutes or less to complete. All
answers are confidential. Feel free to skip any question you prefer not to
answer.

Link to the Survey

Should you have any questions or comments, please write to Dr. Ezra
Kopelowitz of Research Success Technologies: e...@researchsuccess.com

-
AJL will receive results of this survey, so please take the time to
participate if you are interested.

Stay Well,

Kathy B..

hoping to encourage people who may be active on the national level to
contribute to EDI work that needs to be done here in Pennsylvania.

I sincerely appreciate you considering my request. Please do let me know if
you have any questions or comments.

Warm regards,

Centering lived experience - EDI in Pennsylvania

Earlier this year, the Pennsylvania Library Association (PaLA) formed an
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Committee, which is charged with
pursuing, promoting, and championing EDI within PaLA. The committee
examines and develops strategies to promote greater diversity, equity, and
inclusion within PaLA, and in turn within our profession and our libraries.

This recently-formed group is proud of the work that it’s doing, but the
reality is that the committee itself is not as diverse as it needs to be to
effectively represent library workers in Pennsylvania. We’re committed to
promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion broadly, but we fell short in
recruiting ample representation from Black, Indigenous, and people of color
on this committee, and we can’t accomplish big things as a group without
the voices that we most need to hear.

If you’re a member of PaLA (or are willing to become a member) and you’re
interested in informing this conversation, helping build diversity
initiatives in the Association, and being inclusive and equitable in our
programs and activities, we want to hear from you. You’ll be joining an
enthusiastic group of colleagues who are eager to do the work that is
needed, but want to make sure that lived experience and perspectives are at
the center of what PaLA does. This committee will be important to lead
progress and change. We hope that you’ll consider joining us.

Reach out to the 2020 Chair, Robbin Degeratu, to express your interest at
rdeger...@centrecountylibrary.org.

[ha-Safran] ALA's I Love My Librarian Award

2020-09-18 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield via Hasafran
Hello everyone,

I received the following message from the American Library Association. I
am forwarding it to all of you because I believe we all know at least one
librarian we could recommend for this wonderful award. If you know
someone, please nominate them at:
 http://www.ilovelibraries.org/lovemylibrarian
 .

Shana Tova!

Kathy B.

Here is the email I received:

We’re excited to share that nominations for this year’s national I Love My
Librarian Award are now open and will run through November 9. Ten
exceptional school, public and college/university librarians will be
selected to receive $5,000 in recognition of their service to their
communities. They'll be honored during a virtual award ceremony at ALA’s
Midwinter Meeting in January 2021.

Having a large nomination pool is absolutely essential to selecting winners
who have powerful stories and reflect the diversity of the profession,
representing a variety of backgrounds, library types and regions. We hope
you will share news about the award via your social media, website,
newsletter or wherever else you think people can be reached. We have many
free promotional tools
 available
on the I Love My Librarian website, including newsletter copy, digital
graphics and sample social media posts to make it easy for libraries and
library supporters to promote the award in their communities. Feel free to
highlight the nomination link
 through your communication
networks. In the past, your channels have been extremely helpful in getting
out the message far and wide to libraries and library advocates.

Thank you so much for anything you are able to do to help spread the word!
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have questions about the award
or if there’s something I can do to assist efforts.

All the best,

Heather

Re: [ha-Safran] title of a newly published middle grade book about an Ethiopian girl in Israel?

2020-07-24 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield via Hasafran
I think you may be thinking of Too Far From Home *By Naomi Shmuel*

In this short middle grade chapter book, biracial Jewish Meskerem (white
American and black Ethiopian) is growing up in Israel, where she shares her
family’s story of struggle to quell racist bullying from classmates.

Hi Zilvinas,

Yes, everything has been recorded and links to the recordings should be up
on the Socio app about 24 hours after the program. With a couple
exceptions, those links will stay up on Socio for a number of months.

[ha-Safran] The 2020 AJL Conference has been cancelled

2020-03-25 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield via Hasafran
[image: logo for AJL 2020 conference in Evenston]
AJL Conference 2020 Update: March 25, 2020

After much research, discussion, and deliberation, the Association of
Jewish Libraries has decided to cancel our annual conference scheduled for
June 29-July 1, 2020 in Evanston, IL.

We know that you are disappointed in hearing this news, but the AJL Board
felt strongly that there was no other choice to make given the uncertainty
of the progress of COVID-19 (the novel coronavirus).

We will be in touch soon with information for those who have pre-registered
for the conference and with information about potential alternative
opportunities for us to share our knowledge and skills. Our hope is to have
answers to these questions soon, but with the situation changing so
rapidly, and Passover on the horizon, it might be a few weeks.

Thank you for your continued support of AJL. We appreciate your patience as
we work through this unparalleled situation. The Board and Council hope to
have resources available for members related to librarianship in this
interesting time and ways to best serve our patrons.

A huge thank you goes out to our conference organizers, especially National
Conference Chair Lisa Silverman and local chairs, Rachel Kamin and Marcie
Eskin for all the work they and their committee did in preparation for the
conference.

Join us for this exciting webinar,
"Library Marketing Basics:
Promoting on a Shoestring Budget"
Meet Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Library Outreach Mark Aaron
Polger and his latest book, *Library Marketing Basics* (Rowman &
Littlefield, 2019), a resource designed for those new to library marketing.
In addition to providing step-by-step instructions on how to successfully
market your library, this book also discusses the difference between
marketing, promotion, publicity, outreach, advocacy, and advertising;
examples of marketing initiatives from the corporate world (think Wendy's
"Where's the Beef?” campaign); and public relations events.

In this free, one-hour webinar, Mark will talk “true” marketing and how to
apply it to your library. You’ll hear about tools to plan and implement
marketing campaigns, examples of marketing plans, social media marketing
guidelines, brand audits, and how to get buy-in from your colleagues and
your stakeholders. The premise of *Library Marketing Basics* is that *library
marketing* is not a bad term, but a means for survival in a world dominated
by Google, Facebook, Amazon, and others. Join us Friday, September 13, and
learn that you don't need a marketing degree to know what real marketing
looks like.

[ha-Safran] Two programs of interest to AJL Members

2019-07-02 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield via Hasafran
Hello,

During the ALA Conference in Washington DC last week, I was contacted by
Melanie Welch from the ALA's Public Programs office. She asked that I share
the following information with our members:

"It occurred to me that your members might be interested in 2 programs
ALA's Public Programs Office is involved in:

One with the Yiddish Book Center for public libraries
http://programminglibrarian.org/articles/apply-now-yiddish-book-center%E2%80%99s-%E2%80%9Ccoming-america%E2%80%9D-reading-groups-public-libraries

and another with the US Holocaust Memorial Museum for public and academic
libraries

http://programminglibrarian.org/articles/apply-now-%E2%80%98americans-and-holocaust%E2%80%99-traveling-exhibition-tour

Even if your members' libraries aren't one of the library types listed,
they night want to spread the word, or potentially partner with a local
public or academic library on a program."

Both of these programs sound very interesting. I encourage you to
participate in any way you can. Please let us know if you are successful
in bringing either of these programs to your community.

Re: [ha-Safran] AJL Session at ALA 2019 in DC

2019-06-28 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield via Hasafran
Thank you Elliot,

This would not have been the huge success it was without the help I
received from you (Elliot Gertel), Susan Kusel, Emily Bergman, Nancy Sack
and Heidi Rabinowtiz. Their knowledge of ALA was critical to making this
happen. I am hoping we will get more than a few new members from this
interaction. I am also looking forward to hosting a similar event along
with some informational programming at the ALA in Chicago.

It has been a very busy week with participating in the AJL conference and
then flying to DC for the ALA conference. It was wonderful seeing friends,
but it is good to be home.

See you all next year in Chicago!

[ha-Safran] An AJL Job Opportunity

2019-05-10 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield via Hasafran
Association *of* Jewish Libraries

At the direction of the AJL Board following the January 2019 mid-winter
meeting, a committee was established with the charge to investigate the
hiring of an Executive Director for the AJL. After much deliberation, it
was decided that because fund raising needed to be our number one goal, a
search for a part-time, contract Development Associate would be started.

The committee developed the following job description and request for
proposal for the position. We encourage all AJL members to reach out to
colleagues, friends and family who may be interested in applying for this
job. Our hope is to have candidates available for interviewing at the AJL
Board and Council Meetings in June.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact Kathy
Bloomfield at ajlfirs...@gmail.com.

Committee Members:

Kathy Bloomfield (Chair), Dina Herbert, Jacqueline Benefraim, Emily
Bergman, Michelle Chesner, Rebecca Jefferson, Judy Weidman, Holly ZImmerman

*Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) Development Associate*

*Mission*

The Association of Jewish Libraries is an international professional
organization that fosters access to information and research in all forms
of media relating to all things Jewish. The Association promotes Jewish
literacy and scholarship and provides a community for peer support and
professional development.

*Job Description*

The AJL, an historically all-volunteer organization, is looking for a
contract relationship with a part-time Development Associate. This position
calls for a passionate, engaged, high-energy individual to assist the
organization in its fundraising and grantsmanship efforts with the goals of
increasing membership, creating a Case for Giving, and establishing an
endowment that will support our ongoing projects for and with our
membership.

This position will involve communications with the AJL membership along
with outreach to individuals and foundations who have a desire to support
our work. In addition, we are looking for someone who can research and
develop partnerships with organizations that have similar visions.
Finally, this individual would assist AJL leadership in developing creative
initiatives and programming to provide ongoing support of our fundraising
efforts.

This position reports to the AJL President and will be supported by a
committee of active and engaged AJL members. There is no physical AJL
office, therefore the Development Associate is contracted as a consultant
and provides their own access to the space and technology necessary to
perform the administrative work involved with this position.

*Job Responsibilities*

The AJL Development Associate will represent AJL within its membership as
well as in the funder community, including with foundations, major
individual donors, and corporate and other non-profit institutions.
Specific responsibilities include:

   - Assist the AJL Board/Council in brainstorming and creating new methods
to increase AJL membership, create a Case for Giving to AJL, and establish
   an endowment
   - Raise funds for AJL and regularly meet or surpass fundraising targets
   - Research potential donors to gain insight into needs, beliefs and
donation habits to understand how best to represent AJL
   - Work with AJL’s Social Media team to leverage technology and social
media where possible to improve AJL’s name recognition and fundraising
   activities
   - Build upon existing donor relationships and form new donor
relationships on a regular basis and network with the funding community by
   attending conferences and events.
   - Develop and manage grants raised for the AJL, including monitoring
project progress and reporting to the funding body
   - Travel to Mid-Winter and Annual AJL Conferences

*Job Skills & Qualifications*

*Required:*

   - Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
   - A passion for libraries
   - A laser focus on fundraising and the ability to start up quickly
   - Exemplary oral and written communication skills
   - Outstanding organizational abilities and attention to detail
   - At least one year of demonstrated successful, creative fundraising
   experience
   - Experience with Jewish institutions, libraries or non-profit
   associations
   - Demonstrated ability to exercise creative, independent judgment and
discretion in solving problems, as well as take direction and work as
   part of a team
   - Flexibility, willingness to embrace new challenges, a can-do attitude
   and a strong work ethic

*Preferred:*

   - Master’s degree in nonprofit administration or equivalent experience
   - Two years of successful fundraising experience

*Location*

As stated previously, there is no AJL office, so location is flexible

*Compensation*

This is a time-limited, part-time, contract position. Annual compensation
is $36,000. Renewal of contract tied to performance.

[ha-Safran] Good News!

2019-05-05 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield via Hasafran
I want to let everyone know that Dina Herbert was safely delivered of a
baby boy last week. Dina and Ben's welcomed their baby on Thursday, May 2.
According to his father:

"Say hello to Shai Michael Cooper, the newest addition to the Cooper
family. Like his sister, his baby size classification according to the
Virginia medical standard is 'peanut.' He’s 17 1/2 inches; 5 lbs., 8 oz.

He came out with a relatively easy delivery and immediately decided to nap,
which either means he’ll be a happy baby or he’s just still getting ready
for The Crying to Come. Either way, he’s our cutest dudeling."

We wish Dina and family all happiness and a speedy recovery in the weeks
ahead. We look forward to seeing them all in California in June.

*Minutes of the 2017 AJL-SSC Division Meeting*

AM.

*Approval of 2016 Minutes*

· Susan Kusel, Vice President, AJL- SSC Division read the 2016
minutes.

· Ellen Tilman made a change in the minutes- that she, and not
Aileen, gave the STBA award to Aharon Appelfeld in Israel.

o The minutes were amended.

· Etta Gold motioned to accept the minutes. Heidi seconded the
motion. The 2016 SSC Meeting minutes were approved.

*Board/Council Meeting Recap*

o There was a twitter request (be more active and decide what our goals
are with twitter)

*HaSafran *

· Aileen Grossberg reported on the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award
Committee’s work.

· There is no winner this year because the manuscript that was to
be awarded had been previously submitted to another group and was on the
short list for that group’s award. The author had to withdraw the book from
consideration by the STMC as the rules are that books not be submitted
elsewhere while under consideration by the STMC. The Committee did not
want to consider a “runner-up” book for the 2017 Award.

· The committee is changing this rule for future manuscripts,
allowing books to be submitted else

[ha-Safran] The Jewish Values Finder Database needs your help!

2017-09-03 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield
Hello!

An important feature of the AJL Website is access to the Jewish Values
Finder ,
an amazing database of Jewish books and the values they illustrate.
Currently, Heather Lenson has been managing the input of new books.
Heather is also a member of the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee. While
she is able to enter the information for Sydney Taylor Book Award winning
books, there are many other books that should be part of this special and
unique database. We are seeking assistance in helping Heather keep the
Jewish Values Finder database as current as possible.

*We are looking for a few people who can enter recently published, Jewish
children’s books into the Jewish Values Finder database.* This involves
going to the Values Finder form and entering data for six fields: the Book
Title, the Author/Illustrator, the Year of Publication, Age Range,
Subjects, and the Jewish Values. While it takes time (a very valuable
commodity!), the process is straightforward and relatively easy.

If you are interested in participating in this important project, please
contact me at kathybloomfi...@gmail.com. I will put all volunteers in touch
with Heather, and she will explain exactly what you need to do.

I appreciate your time and attention and look forward to hearing from you.

Wishing you all a wonderful New Year!

Kathy B.

Re: [ha-Safran] Christian content in bible stories

2017-08-08 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield
Hello,

Sorry to be coming in to this conversation so late. I just moved across
country and am coming up for air.

When I ran ForWordsBooks as a book fair company, I offered many books from
Christian Publishers. However, I read each and every one of them
individually and looked for "hidden" Christian content. As a Jew by Choice
who was raised as a Catholic, I am aware of those underlying images and
words that may have a double meaning within the story, or images in "Old
Testament" stories that are not appropriate for a Jewish audience -
kneeling while praying comes to mind. '
There is absolutely nothing wrong with many of the biblical retellings
coming from these publishers. You just have to be careful and vigilant in
looking at them all.

[ha-Safran] SSC Division Meeting Minutes from 2016

2017-06-14 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield
Taking my lead from Rebecca Jefferson, I am sending the minutes of the SSC
Meeting from Charleston in June 2016.

*Minutes from AJL SSC Division meeting June 19, 2016*

Kathy Bloomfield called the meeting to order 4:30 PM.

Kathy announced that as Aimee was not able to attend the conference and
Chaya as VP was not able to speak, she would run the meeting.

*2015 Minutes:*

Debbie Feder read the minutes from last year.

Kathy asked for a motion to approve minutes.

Heidi seconded the motion.

The minutes were unanimously approved.

Kathy introduced Susan Kusell as the new SSC VP.

*Committee Reports:*

Rachail Kurtz was not at conference. Kathy read accreditation report:
announcements were placed in HaSafran several times in order to
encourage applying for accreditation and renewal of accreditation.
Benefits and deadlines for applying were highlighted. Rachail emailed all
the libraries whose membership had expired in the past year or was about to
expire to remind them to renew. 5 applications were received. They will
receive their certificates at the conference.

Enid Sperber was not present, her report on the Bibliography Bank was as
follows: Six new bibliographies were added to the Bibliography Bank and all
bibliographies over 7 years old were deleted as obsolete.

Joyce Levine is stepping down as coordinator of the Wiki. She said she
would be willing to train a new volunteer to take over. She spoke about
how valuable the wiki is. Kathy asked Joyce what is involved in doing the
wiki. Joyce replied that the wiki was well arranged for many topics. It
does what librarians do which is sorting and organizing topics. Toby
Harris agreed to manage the wiki. The wiki is open to the public. You do
not have to be a member of AJL to access it.

Aileen Grossberg reported that The Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award winner,
Meira Dreizen is coming from England to accept her award for "Honey and
Me". Six good entries were received this year (they weren't all holocaust
or holiday books). Aileen presented the STBA to Aron Applefeld in
Israel. She requested volunteers to serve on the STBC.Aileen said that
the Jewish Book Council was unresponsive to requests for publicity for the
STBA. There was a discussion with suggestions that maybe Amalia can
officially write to the Jewish Book Council on behalf of the STBC.

Diane Rauchberger reported that the STBC received and read over 120 books
in 3 categories. The new chair Ellen Tillman issued an invitation for
everyone to come to the sessions.

Aileen Ratzabi head of the Weine user's group was not present. Her report
stated that there are about a dozen diverse people who are involved in the
group. They want to address the problem of how the group can have access
to the current version online so that they can submit suggestions. Aileen
would like to find something better than Google Docs. Joyce offered
suggestions and said she would contact Aileen in order to clarify the
problem and possible solutions.

A secretary has not been chosen yet.

*Winkler-Groner Scholarship award *

Winkler-Groner award was won by Rena Citron. Rachel will present the award
at lunch on Monday.

*2016 Conference Discussion:*

Next year's conference will be in NYC. Suggestions for sessions were
requested.

· It was suggested that we should revisit last year's topics which
were not used. Anyone who has suggestions should email them to Jim.

· Some of the suggestions mentioned:

· genealogy is a popular topic. It was suggested to ask David
Horowitz from Israel who is head of Heritage.com.

· Ellen Tillman said she will present a program at her synagogue on
how to do a genealogy.

· A suggestion was made that since the conference was in NYC we
should bring in as many authors as we can for the author's luncheon.

· Joyce had concerns that the rooms are very small at HUC for
banquet.

· Ellen said that everyone should join JEDlab(?) on Facebook to
share our expertise with Jewish educators because 90% of the books
recommended to teach are not Jewish themed.

· Ellen wanted to know if anyone was going to present at NEWCAJE

· Heidi said that we should all keep on our radar if some local
program is scheduled so we can represent AJL, and we can all be ambassadors.

· Heidi suggested more sessions on how to advocate for your library

· Amalia suggested Freshman seminar sessions

· Joyce suggested calling the sessions continuing education not
Freshman seminars

· Amalia said that we should stress that if Synagogue or center
libraries get accredited they will be able to get more funding.

Amalia wished everyone a nice summer.

Adjourned 5:15 PM.

Respectfully submitted.

[ha-Safran] The HaSafran Survey

2017-05-22 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to fill out the Survey that
was recently sent out by the Strategic Planning Committee. Your input is
very valuable.

It has been brought to my attention that question #3: "What type of
HaSafran posts most appeal to you? (check all that apply)" - does not
actually allow you to check all that apply. Please forgive my error in not
choosing the correct response style for that question.

Many people have added their additional items to the comment space at the
bottom of the survey. If you have not yet filled out the survey and plan to
do so, please also use the comments area for that purpose.

If you already filled out the survey, but would like to add some items from
Question #3 to your answer, please email me with those items.

Again, thank you for your responses.

Hi Amy,

Here is a link to the article you are referring to: Why are Jewish
Children's Books so Bad?

I am also sending you a link to Heidi Rabinowitz's response to the article.

[ha-Safran] A Plea or Proposals

2016-10-17 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield
To my SSC Colleagues (and other interested parties):

The New York Conference Program Committee needs our help.

They are looking for proposals specifically related to the interests of SSC
Librarians for our next Annual Conference.

Are you knowledgeable about a topic and can speak about it for 20-minutes?
Have you had a workplace experience that you want to share with other
librarians?
Do you have a network of friends and colleagues who can each speak 20
minutes (or so) on similar topics, thereby creating a panel?

If any of the above are true - we invite you to submit a proposal to the
Conference Program Committee.

If you do not have an idea in mind but are willing to coordinate speakers
and write a proposal, let me know. I have a list of ideas I can share with
you.

We would love to hear from the Conference Program Committee that they are
overwhelmed with SSC topics and could we stop now. 😀

Details can be found here: http://jewishlibraries.org/Upcoming_Conference

The deadline is November 30, 2016.

Thank you for your time and attention AND your forthcoming proposals.

Kathy B.
