Sure windows runs lower CPU %'s
Sure windows may use less memory.

However there is no way in hell I would refuse to sacrifice resources for a
better performance. Windows has an internal system kernel resolution timer
which runs 128 Hz by default (last time I checked), which causes your
framerate to sit at an average 67-68, without any sorts of influences. Now
when you look at any *nix base, you can quite easily see that you can modify
the system's kernel resolution timer beyond the default setting. And to top
all of this off, Linux 2.6.X easily has the capacity to run at 1000 Hz.

[hlds_linux] Server lags

2005-09-25 Thread Franck Turmel-Josek

Hi,

We have a box wuith three hlds servers (28, 20, 21 players).
This box is an bi-Xeon 3 GHz (FSB 800) 2Go RAM, OS is Fedora Core 3.

We have lags on 28 players server.

Then we used 'top' and saw 50 % of CPU.

And we used HLSW, with the fonction 'stats' we had :

CPUIn Out Uptime Users FPS Players
99.50 55.40 64.61 634966 20.4123

CPUInOut Uptime Users FPS Players
89.00 44.04 49.82 637 966 249.38 17

... and 'top' said 50 % CPU.

Can someone explain us what CPU with 'stats' fonction means ?

Thank you for help.

   Franck

It's a quarter of 11pm Central Standard time right now,
yet hlds does not yet show a DoD:S game as an option. I know Valve
has a release date of Monday 5pm CST. I know, if Valve is anything
like the companies I've worked for, that developers are busy hammering
out bugs and new code and violating three laws of physics just to
come up with a miracle fix by release date and they'll patch it later,
managers are interrupting them every three to five minutes asking
for "status reports" and Gabe is probably chewing on his fingernails
at home while scribbling out revisions to a press release he hopes
he won't have to make.

It's crunch time, at Valve. Everybody knows what it's like.

For the server admins, we're standing by ready to update and
launch. Should we wait on pins and needles or grab some pillow
time and assume we'll have something to work with on Monday?

For that matter, can we get an update that at least allows
us to download the game content, even if the server isn't ready?
Valve won't release the clients until the server is ready, but why
not get the maps, sounds, models and such pre-downloaded by the
servers since that content is finalized? Yes, it's an extra
revision to the code, but given the content is in final it's a
lot of implementation time that can be moved ahead of the first
release, which thus allows bug reports to come in much faster.

Which reminds me, welcome back from vacation Alfred!
I hope you had a wonderful, relaxing time, because I don't

RE: [hlds_linux] DoD:S update, salivate or sleep?

2005-09-25 Thread Jason L. Schwab
I totally agree with you on this, we need some kind of an update from
valve here, so we at least know where we stand, with the client release
and the server release, although maybe both will be delayed? I hope not!

Although, maybe with all of the problems with the latest source engine
update, they are worried or checking into possible problems with dod
source as well as the ones we saw with CS:S.

Although, not everyone is having problems with the newest source engine
with CS:S, but they surely is a lot of them having the problems, so
something does need to be done about that too.

That's my interpretation as well... I'm wondering if they will even
release the server package before the clients. 700,000 clients, and no
servers ought to make it a great release. :) JK

Will they post tonight, or if they will wait until tomorrow morning.

Maybe they are all at home watching the last of Sunday NFL and filling
up the bellies with some good home cooking.

How about you give me numbers saying linux is better?
All i have to say is i stand corrected because of my past expirence with
Linux and windows with HLDS.
My profession is actually Windows NT/2000/2003 servers. But i still deal
with linux all the time.
But some of these guys dont want to say it. But i will.
 HLDS IS BETTER ON WINDOWS!!!

Thats what i have to say. If you dont think so then you stay thinking all
day long. Its the truth.
You prove to me that linux runs HLDS better. And HLDS is not the only
program.
I love windows and linux. But i hate the "LINUX is the best OS EVER MADE
and MS SUCKS" and the "APPLE MAC IS COOL AND WINDOWS SUCKS" people. They
have no sense. Here is the truth. Linux is not the best at everything. So
just stop and come to the real world and leave your imaginary world of
windows sucks. But windows is actually a pretty damn good OS. It does what i
want. And it does it good.

If you look at the srcds_run script, it actually has "dods" as one of the
'-game' options. However, the steam binary does not yet actually love that
game type.

Yes, of course I was joking - that's what smileys mean :-)

Well almost joking ... it has been somewhat this way in the past ...
with winblows and linux

Anyway, I do have 3 points for Mr. Clegg:

1) ./steam -command list
keep doing this until it says "Day of Defeat Source" or something
   like that
   (It still doesn't right now)
You could write a script that repeats that command and starts
screaming alerts when it changes - or better still - starts
downloading the new name when it appears

2) How did you get the server list? What were you running to get
   that list?
If you have a client that shows DoD:S what is it? I know DoD
   will not show that.
So either you faked the list or you are doing something that
Valve may not be very happy about ...

3) Maybe they are just beta's that were handed out when they shouldn't
have been. And the players are using what to play? Probably beta's
as well. And you as well ... ?

By the way, IIRC the conclusion reached by people who know far more
about such things than I ever will is that the whole thing was and
continues to be written on Windows for Windows and is simply ported to
Linux, and somewhere in there there's a difference in optimizations and
what things can be taken advantage of on one platform versus
another...yada yada yada. In other words, it's not to say there's
anything inherent to Windows itself that provides better performance,
nor is there anything inherent to Linux that makes it worse, but rather
that being a native Win32 app ported to Linux winds up with the native
Win32 version performing better on the same hardware.

But again, this isn't something I bleed over, nor does it keep me up a
night, nor do I care to be involved in any "we" that sets out to solve
this mysterious riddle.

ScratchMonkey, how long have you been on the list? This has come up
time and again, and every time it turns out that you can squeeze more
servers on the same hardware (or run each server with higher fps) on
Windows than on Linux. This is an age-old question that's been
"numbered" to death over the years. The fact is that the windows server
binaries use less CPU than the Linux versions. As has been said before,
that doesn't mean that Windows is a better *choice*, necessarily.

Here are some options:

1) Re-download the steam installer and start from scratch.

2) Find another system similar to yours, have it update, tar up the hlds_l
dir, untar it on your system. This will work but you have to transfer a ~1gb
tarball around.

3) Find out whats up with your net connection.

As a wild guess, I'll assume you mean some kind of benchmark within the
binary gives better numbers on Win32. Which Win32? What do you suppose
accounts for the difference? Poor compiler? Choice of optimizations?
Specific other processes stealing cycles? (Recall that neither Win32 nor
Linux are monolithic and exact objects; both are assemblies of varying and
versioned components.)

If a Windows install is better, we should determine exactly what the issue
is that keeps Linux from matching it. The first step to that objective is
to establish exactly what we're measuring.

Yeah it is a bit overkill but then it's only a virtual server; there are
other websites etc being hosted elsewhere on the machine so I'm gonna
take things slowly and see how it goes. Plus I prefer smaller
deathmatch games so I don't really want that many players ;)

You might want to investigate Mani Admin Plugin: www.mani-admin-plugin.com

If you don't want to install MAP, you can fake the server's max player count
by using sv_visiblemaxplayers. It's not an ideal solution, but it's
something at least.

Cool thanks. sv_visiblemaxplayers may well be enough... I'll give it a
shot.

HLSW, as someone pointed out is at http://www.hlsw.org. As the web site is
currently broken (and has been for some time), use FTP (remember that?):
ftp://ftp.hlsw.org:21/downloads/hlsw/hlsw_1_0_0_44_setup.exe

Ahh great thanks. Seems to work fine.

There are log parsers, none of which are decent. One that is looking
promising (but not hit 1.0 milestone yet) is HLStatsX: www.hlstatsx.com.

Cool I may well give it a try. :)

I have deleted the file. Even if I move the steam file to another

doesn't work. It works on all of my other machines though just this one
it doesn't seem to want to work.

[hlds_linux] Log format bug in source dedicated server.

2005-09-25 Thread Peter Kirby
Hi,

Hopefully someone at valve can read this and maybe fix it. Isn't a
serious problem but I had to work around it.

In source for the 'STEAM ID Validated' log message it doesn't contain
the 'standard' log format (standard is "Name"").
Here are examples of what I mean:

>From standard 1.6 Counter-strike server (ID's/IP's changed):

1.2.3.4 : 27035 > log L 09/18/2005 - 01:55:07:
"CaPadonNa<627><>" connected, address
"1.2.3.4:27005"
1.2.3.4 : 27035 > log L 09/18/2005 - 01:55:08:
"CaPadonNa<627><>" STEAM USERID validated

You see both log entries have the standard format. Although of course
at this point there is no team so the field IS there but empty.

The CSS version:

1.2.3.4 : 27015 > RL 09/18/2005 - 22:19:14:
"sparkdoggie<3023><>" connected, address
"1.2.3.4:27005"
1.2.3.4 : 27015 > RL 09/18/2005 - 22:19:16:
"sparkdoggie" STEAM USERID validated

You see the STEAM ID validated message only shows "Name"
instead of the full format (which the connected line shows properly).

Is only a problem because my log listener takes logs from both SOURCE
and 1.6 servers and handles them both. So I needed to code it to
support the correct AND broken format. Which unfortunately means when
I am matching players from connected and validated states, I must use
name and not slot number. Which is a shame.

Anyway just letting the valve folks know about this.

I use the default on my servers. From a practical point of view, tweaking
network-related cvars (either client or server side) makes little to no
difference.

It would appear that the Steam client (since the recent server update)
refuses to display the shield for "secure" servers that really are. I guess
this will appear on Valve's ever-lengthening to do list.

Yeah... it would be a bit pointless to be configured this way. It's
nice to know that your email has been recevied by the list successfully
by getting it back!

Ben

This is an option in the setup " Receive posts you send to the list? " and "
Receive acknowledgement mail when you send mail to the list? ". I turn both
of these on so I can know that my posts made it to the list. Every couple of
months I stop receiving list mail, and I find that my settings have been
changed, specifically " Disable mail delivery " gets turned on a couple
times a year. So - visit

101? That seems like quite a lot of packets to be sending out per
second. Could a low cl_maxupdaterate affect the FPS on the client? I
thought that this wasn't the case but after playing on it, I do notice a
lower FPS than I usually get elsewhere.

Hi sYs^,

Thanks for all those. http://hlsw.net/ seems to be a bit fucked atm tho

sv_maxupdaterate 101 the best imho.

101? That seems like quite a lot of packets to be sending out per
second. Could a low cl_maxupdaterate affect the FPS on the client? I
thought that this wasn't the case but after playing on it, I do notice a
lower FPS than I usually get elsewhere.

Hi, just a few answers:

* 2. Does anyone know of a decent rcon app for Windows that would enable
me to run commands on the server without loading up Half Life 2 each
time?

HLSW http://hlsw.net/

* 3. Is there a decent log parser out there that'll generate HTML
reports from logfiles?

* 5. When I right click my server in the Steam list and click "View

If you see the VAC2 logo on loading there arent any problem, it's a new
bug when u dont see in serverbrowser.

[hlds_linux] Lots of (newcomer) questions

2005-09-25 Thread Ben Kennish

Hi all,

I'm new to the list so howdy all :)

I've just been given permission by my boss to set up a Source server on
our core network. It's a Fedora Core 3 Linux (v)server with Dual Xeon
3.00Ghzs and 2GB RAM so I'm pretty chuffed about it.

I have a few questions that I'd be really grateful if anyone can shed
some light on...

* 1. Is it possible to setup the server in some way so that any player
with rcon access can burst the maxplayers value. To clarify, I have
maxplayers currently set at 8 but I would quite like to be able to join
the game myself even if 8 people are playing on the server. Any ideas?
Failing that, is there a way to kick a player and give them a message
similar to 'Sorry but the server admin wants to play' :)

* 2. Does anyone know of a decent rcon app for Windows that would enable
me to run commands on the server without loading up Half Life 2 each time?

* 3. Is there a decent log parser out there that'll generate HTML
reports from logfiles?

* 4. After reading the following article ...

http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=108

I have added the following to my server.cfg:

sv_maxrate <= I assume these correspond to the client-side 'rate'
sv_minrate 5000

What is the point of setting a sv_minrate?

sv_maxupdaterate 30
.. does this mean the maximum number of update packets to accept from a
client per second? Is 30 ok to use and if so, why is the default 60?

sv_robust_explosions 0
... does this really make any difference and is the graphical effect of
0 noticeable?

* 5. When I right click my server in the Steam list and click "View
server info" I am told 'Valve Anti-Cheat: Not secure'. Is this anything
to worry about? Can I make it 'secure'?

* 6. I'm having problems setting up a HL2 CTF server (www.hl2ctf.com).
I've unzipped the files into 'hl2ctf' off the main server directory (the
directory with 'srcds_run' in) but when I run it, things go a bit
screwy. It seems to only load in the deathmatch files but then tries to
load the ctf map...

./srcds_run -game hl2ctf +map ctf_raven
.
Game.dll loaded for "Half-Life 2 Deathmatch"
.
Unknown command "play"
.
Attempted to create unknown entity type ctf_combine_flag!
Can't init ctf_combine_flag

Unknown command "ctf_capturelimit"

Am I missing the obvious here?

Thanks in advance for any help given.

Most crashes after a code base update from Valve are - usually :) - the
result of some 3rd party plugin. Whenever I update servers, I remove all
addons and then add one back one by one until it either breaks or works.

Incidentally, that's a lot of addons - I take it you run a reasonably small
server.

Slightly OT, I tried running Mattie's EventScripts but as it doesn't appear
to compile scripts (instead interpreting them all the time) it adds around
50% load to the server - which isn't great on my 64 player public!

The crash does not retain logs from the game in the logs folder when this is
occuring. I luckilly had HLSW running and it automatically saves the
console to a log file. There are no error messages, the last line on both
logs is a - suicide with "world".

Has anyone else experienced this? I can't see how it would be plugin
related, but I am running Mani Plugin 1.1.0za, Mattie's EventScripts
0.9.1.0 , LastManStanding 2.5, counter-bet-menu 1.3 and Vweegit's
Pickpocket 1.2.

I just talked to one of the admins who was on the server at 12:25pm PST and
said he was on de_dust2 playing against 1 bot. He planted the bomb and when
it blew, he died from it, and the server crashed then too. So 3 committed
suicide with world have caused a crash.

Yea but mine even if I just type ./steam all it says is aborted like

Well ./steam says the following:

optional parameters: (only needed to access limited content)
  -username - Steam account username
  -password - Steam account password

I think I was still using the username and password due to steam at one
point were deleting accounts that didn't point to a CDKEY that wasn't
used
after x amount of time.

Anyway there is no harm including those arguments in with the line :)
