[LegacyUG] ProMedia Manager

2009-03-08 Thread Momalot66
Has anyone had experience with the ProMedia Manager mentioned on the
Pictures CD? It sounds neat, but I cannot find it on the Legacy Homepage.
And by
the way, we have an update: Legacy Deluxe 7.0.0.89!

[LegacyUG] missing sources

2009-03-08 Thread Dede Holden
I need advice.

My next project is to add sources to all the people in my database who
don't have ANY source. Yes, I confess. In the past I added names
and dates, but after converting to Legacy, I've tried to do a better
job of sourcing as I add. However, I still have quite a few
(hundreds) who don't have any source.

I've looked at the Missing Sources report. Here's my dilemma. The
report is sorted by surname, starting with all those women who don't
have a last name. Is there a way to sort by MRIN so that I could work
on the whole family at one time, going down the list?

Is it better to assign one of the visible tag numbers so that I can
see at a glance who needs work?

Has anyone else worked on adding missing sources? What is the best
systematic way to accomplish this task?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Dede Holden

[LegacyUG] Print Family Group Record

2009-03-08 Thread Ann Parsons
I would like to print a FGR leaving off the USA and having aft changed to
after, bef to before and especially change cir to about.

Can these changes be done? If so, would this be a specific report or would
it be global. I do have short locations that do not have the USA. In
customize, dates I have Circa display as abt. Using v.7.0.0.86.

Thank you,

Re: [LegacyUG] Print Family Group Record

2009-03-08 Thread Ann Parsons
Ron,

Thank you for helping me. Changing to short locations is my fault, for some
reason, sometimes things in the lower left of the screen I do not see. I
checked the use short dates & it works perfectly.

The abt vs cir has me stumped. I had the circa changed to about and about to
abt. I could not get, when I typed abt, to stop changing to cir on the
report. Just now I changed about to about and circa to about and the report
still reads cir. I have the dates for these people, for example, as about
1815. Am I in the wrong place? I went to options, customise, prefixes in the
typed column for about and typed about I went to the display circa and typed
about. Then I clicked on save. I tried closing the program, when I opened
the program it still has cir. If this person, Hugh Cochrane, is the main
person it has about. If I move down to the son then Hugh changes to cir. I
don't mean to be picky but the people I send this to understand about they
do not understand cir. Perhaps I hang out with some low life but the circa
seems about as pretentious as does the compiler information - produced by, I
would much rather have the reports read created or compiled by.

While I am on my soap box, I have never been able to get anything I enter in
the comments field to print. I like to have Additions and corrections
appreciated. I have to put this in the email field to get it to print. I
have tried to use the comments field for years and cannot seem to get it to
show on the computer screen or print outs.

Regards,
Ann

[LegacyUG] bug in newest update?

2009-03-08 Thread Dede Holden
I believe there is a bug in some of the Sourcewriter templates in the
newest update. I've already submitted a bug report, but I wanted to
save all of you the worry if this happens to you.

For some reason, when you are entering the specifics in Step 2 of the
templates, you will get a "Runtime Error '5': Invalid procedure call
or argument." The two specific templates I've had a problem with are
the Artifacts template and the 1900 census template. When you click
OK, Legacy closes.

I can reproduce the error, so I've submitted a bug report. The Family
record template worked fine, so I don't think it's a problem specific
to my computer. BTW, running Windows XP on an HP laptop.

If someone else tries this and gets a different result will you let me know?

Try Search > Detailed Search with the Primary Condition set as Individual,
Source-Citation, contains, and enter the name of street or area. Then Create
List > Print. You will have to search and print a separate list for each
street name/area, but at least you should be able to pull out the data.

While I am more of a splitter and my work is almost 100% USA, (for this very
reason; I have a master source for each township or enumeration district in
each census year), I did have a roughly equivalent situation that this
procedure was able to pull up for me. Let us know if it works for you.

Actually, now that I think about it longer, you may want to set the Primary
Condition as Individual - Master Source - contains Lancashire 1861, then add a
second condition as I described.

Re: [LegacyUG] Print Family Group Record

2009-03-08 Thread Ann Parsons
Ron,

I closed the program as I had read on the LUG that sometimes a person having
problems were advised to try that. In the family view for Hugh & Eliz they
have always had about. It is when I do a FGR for their children that the
about changes to cir.

In the family view for Hugh Cochrane his birth is about 1815. In the
reports, family group report he is about, his wife Eliza has about, his
children are about. I do not have parents for him or his wife.

In the family view for his son John Cochrane, I have dates for him, his wife
& children. In the reports, family group report John's parents, Hugh & Eliza
now have cir.

I tried deleting the birth data for Hugh & Eliz and saving, then re-entering
the about 1815 and about 1820 respectively. Still cir in the FGR for his son
John.

I looked at the FGR preview for some of their other children, Hugh & Eliza
have cir.

Before I would do the reset which is a pain I would just as soon take a dose
of salts. Perhaps I should just send a disclaimer along with the report that
the program I use will not print about for parents.

Ann

Re: [LegacyUG] bug in newest update?

2009-03-08 Thread Connie Sheets

Dede,

Confirming the problem (which I've never seen before the 7.0.0.89 update; I
have used the templates you mention with previous version 7 builds). For the
1900 census, I was able to enter data in several fields on Step 2, but it
popped up when I started to type in the URL field. On the Artifacts template
it popped up with the first letter I typed in the first field. I too am
running XP on an HP Laptop, for what that may be worth.

GI'm beginning to get impatient with Legacy. I've used, and loved,
Legacy for years, since at least version 3, but my sources MUST work right.
The subsequent citation issue STILL has not been addressed. That RootsMagic4
beta is starting to look better and better...

Very strange. I don't use the SourceWriter template, but tried to reproduce the
bug by
entering sources for the U.S. 1900 census and Artifacts. Worked fine - got to
Step 3 with
no problems.

I'm running Win XP on a clone.

I get an error 5 in step 2 as well by entering a generic source.

RE: [LegacyUG] Print Family Group Record

2009-03-08 Thread ronald ferguson

Ann,

Let me get this right, Are you saying that in the Family View where you have a
"Cir" this has now been changed to "About", but in the Family Group Report it
is still showing as "About"?

If so try using 1) The reset button for the Family Group Report and if that
fails then 2) delete the Family Group Report .usr file.

You didn't say in which line to enter the URL so I entered one in every line.
Still worked
fine.

If you want to write to me personally with a blow-by-blow, line-by-line
description of
what you did to get the error, I'll try it again. So far though, everything
works fine.

[LegacyUG] Impatience with Legacy

2009-03-08 Thread Ward Walker

Connie,

Have you ever seen any feedback from Millennia that they acknowledge any of
the 'subsequent citation' bugs that we reported a few months ago (and
thoroughly discussed on this list)? I haven't. No direct reponse to logging
the bugs, and no e-mails from Support on this list about any of our
discussions, as we sometimes see about other issues. I wonder how far down
the queue these bugs are, compared to other issues.

Has anyone ever received an acknowledgement that a new bug report was
received successfully and entered into the bug tracking system?

Would we have been wiser to e-mail our complaints to Support rather than to
enter the bug reports using the Legacy Home tab?

I'm copying Support on this e-mail, in hopes of receiving a statement of

Dede,

Confirming the problem (which I've never seen before the 7.0.0.89 update;
I have used the templates you mention with previous version 7 builds).
For the 1900 census, I was able to enter data in several fields on Step 2,
but it popped up when I started to type in the URL field. On the
Artifacts template it popped up with the first letter I typed in the first
field. I too am running XP on an HP Laptop, for what that may be worth.

GI'm beginning to get impatient with Legacy. I've used, and
loved, Legacy for years, since at least version 3, but my sources MUST
work right. The subsequent citation issue STILL has not been addressed.
That RootsMagic4 beta is starting to look better and better...

Re: [LegacyUG] Impatience with Legacy

2009-03-08 Thread Connie Sheets

Ward,

I had some correspondence with Customer Service a couple of months ago, but I
believe it was specific to the full citations, rather than subsequent
citations, always printing on FGS, Individual Reports, etc. (I wasn't sure at
the time exactly which problem was being discussed). I was asked to send them
copies of some .usr files, which I did. That's the last I've heard.

By coincidence, I was reading through some old unread LUG posts yesterday, and
came across the following:

This is probably a related, if not the same basic problem, as we have
discussed, but in another context. That is, not only were details lost when
merging old Basic sources into Sourcewriter, but details are lost when printing
Subsequent Citations, especially if an override has been used.

I will try to re-submit my issues this week, as clearly as I can, with
references to the examples given by several of us on this list, (this time I
will track more carefully what I send and when I send it).

Sure would be nice if Legacy had a system for telling the submitter they have
received, confirmed, and are prioritizing the problem. (Though it seems to me
having SourceWriter work properly would be high on Legacy's the priority list,
especially given the competition they are about to encounter).

Yes I have recieved them more than once. You may have missed this detail, that
I remember. The first person to report the problem will recieve a 'thank you'
for pointing it out, within the week, and when 'fixed' and added to next
update, will generate a subsequent 'thank you' and note that it is in the next
queue. But not the second or rest. The next step is not consistent, but I have
seem a message to 'us all' that it has been queued, and is set in upcoming
update.

Re: [LegacyUG] Impatience with Legacy

2009-03-08 Thread Steve Voght
That said, I've reported several bugs via the "Report a Bug"
interface, and never received a single acknowledgment or message that
anyone has even read them, let alone added them to the queue. Perhaps
that's because they were already reported, but since they're still
present in the latest build (and seemingly easy to fix since most of
them deal with typos or formatting issues), what am I to make of the
customer support response?

Something needs to be done to improve this side of the Legacy
interface -- either acknowledgment of *ALL* bug reports, or a public
list of known bugs to reduce redundant reports. The current system
leaves us frustrated and ends up with far too many rambling and often
fruitless threads on LUG.

Re: [LegacyUG] missing sources

2009-03-08 Thread Dede Holden
I'm going to guess that what I want is not available. I want to sort
by MRIN, not RIN. I have husbands and wives that are not even close
to each other in the RIN numbers, but the MRIN would put them
together. The number option button sorts by RIN.

I guess I'll have to come up with Plan B for a systematic way to work
through those with no sources.

Thanks anyway,

Re: [LegacyUG] Print Family Group Record

2009-03-08 Thread Ann Parsons
Hello Ron,

Back from my trek to the nearest town. In the family view for Hugh it has
about for him & his wife Eliza, also if one does previews their family group
record. Thenwhen one goes to their son John and previews his family
group record, John's parents (Hugh & Eliza) have now changed to cir.

Before writing this I looked at several other families that have a parent
with an about birth year. These parents have about on their child's family
group record.

Of the ones I looked at it is just this one family. I tried deleting Hugh &
Eliza's birth year, and entering it again. Still cir. on their son's family
group record.

Ann,

Let me get this right, Are you saying that in the Family View where you have
a "Cir" this has now been changed to "About", but in the Family Group Report
it is still showing as "About"?

If so try using 1) The reset button for the Family Group Report and if that
fails then 2) delete the Family Group Report .usr file.

Re: [LegacyUG] missing sources

2009-03-08 Thread JCTripp
Dede,

I don't have the Missing Sources search in ver 6, so I am just imagining
here, but could you tag those individuals from your search results and then
use the Index view to customize columns to show minimal info but include
tag # you selected from the Missing search and spouse MRIN, and parent's
MRIN etc.
If you don't get too greedy, you can narrow column widths to see all in one
screen width. Of course, you'll have to use page down. When you find an
individual with both tag & MRIN number, select Family View, add your
sources, and untag that individual.
Please note that I am replying with this convoluted work around because
although I have tagged individuals, I haven't read about or tagged
marriages.
Seems you should be able to tag all marriages with any individual that has
the tag # given by your initial Missing sources search and use that list.

Ann,

Hoped you enjoyed your trip,

I take you are referring to the two boxes below either the husband or wife,
where it gives the parents' names eg. Edward Rogers (Abt 1843 - Cir 1890). If
so, I believe that to be fixed, and if so I would not wish for it to be
changed. I suspect that it is the same string as used in webpages, and it would
be too large for the page/boxes used in the Pedigree pages. It may also cause
problems elsewhere.

If that is not where the problem is please come back to me.

I see no reason to save *any* paper documents, unless you are the custodian of
a one-of-a-kind public archive. On the rare occasions when you need the paper
in the future, you can print another copy. (Those few contemporary documents
needed for legal purposes are an exception, of course).

Transcriptions are fine for me *if* the actual form of the original doesn't
convey any information. Transcriptions are important because they are computer
searchable.

But in many cases, the form matters too - handwriting where the transcription
accuracy is uncertain, signatures vs a witnessed "X", marginal notations in a
different handwriting, etc. For such documents, I scan the original in grey
scale (and color if appropriate) at sufficient resolution to encode all the
visible information, and then save the scanned image as well as the
transcription. The transcription should contain a reference to the scanned
image. Computer hard disks now have so much capacity and are so cheap that
there's no longer any reason to compromise on resolution. (a one terrabyte
hard drive is now under $100. That's a million megabytes!) For this reason,
it's also easy and cheap to keep multiple copies of everything on multiple
disks, removing any concern about losing the data when disks fail. Archival
copies on DVD's provide yet another redundant level of safety.

Another factor is that for the old, faded, documents we often see, a good
grey-scale scanned image can be enhanced to be far more readable than the
original. In such cases, I save the raw scanned image as well as the enhanced
image, because I might someday want to use a different type of enhancement.

For my own purposes, copies of documents that are available from a large
commercial database such as ancestry.com need not be saved locally. These
databases are reliably backed up, and sufficiently valuable so that in the
unlikely event that ancestry.com abruptly went bankrupt and shut down its
websites, some other company would arrange to rescue the data.

Electronic images or transcriptions of documents stored only on small private
websites can *not* be assumed to be permanently available. These sites can
disappear overnight and never be seen again. I will keep local copies of such
documents in my own computer files.

Re: [LegacyUG] Impatience with Legacy

2009-03-08 Thread Steve Voght
Adobe is actually fairly good about posting what they call the "known
limitations" of their software, and as Ron mentions virtually all
open-source projects have outstanding trackers and databases with test
methodology to confirm fixes. Obviously if one commercial company is
listing their bugs and the others aren't, it might turn off some users
to purchasing that software, but consider the poor reviews we
occasionally see for software that doesn't mention that some of its
features are buggy, or simply "aren't ready yet". All software has
bugs, but acknowledging them and making it clear that they're being
worked on would actually encourage me to consider a program over some
competitor's software where everyone is just griping in the forums
about how buggy it is, with no cohesive response from the company.
Some acknowledgment about bugs and truth about where things stand
(e.g. the fate of the Source Conversion Tool) would go a long way to
alleviate current user concerns and encourage new customers to
purchase the software.

If you Search for individuals without a source under missing sources.
Tag these with an unused tag.
Go to File Export> Legacy file (make sure you keep same RINs) Give this a
name.
When you open this new file Click on Marriage List (if it is on your

Then click on MRIN at top and it will sort in numerical order.

[LegacyUG] How do I source a "Family Tree" found on Ancestry.com

2009-03-08 Thread v pedersen
I found what Ancestry.com calls a "Family Tree" on their website.  It isn't
really a family tree but a short list of related people.

I looked in the archives and see that many people suggest putting Ancestry.com
as a repository and the collections found on Ancestry (such as WWI Draft
Registrations, etc) as the source.

But what about something less straight forward, like the "family tree" I found
on Ancestry?

How would I source this?  No author is listed, nor contact information, it is
simply a short list of related people under the title  "Smith Family Tree".

In the "Add a New Source", Source Writer's family tree and family group sheet
options do not offer me a choice of medium other than "Online Images" and
"Privately Held".  Since the list is not really what would be considered an
online image (such as a census page image would be) and the list is not
privately held, how would I source this list of related persons that Ancestry
calls a "family tree"?

Any ideas?

Re: [LegacyUG] Impatience with Legacy

2009-03-08 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES

I may have said it wrong. I didn't mention the auto-reply that says thank you,
and we are looking at it. Because in the past, I saved all of my postings
to/from techincal, and found that all were eventually fixed, or commented on at
least in the negative. The best filing, one that chered me up, was a big change
in L5, which from my reccomendation was added in verbatum a year or so later.
About others of my real old ones, I was contacted in the last week, for
clarifications. Does not mean a positive final answer, but they stated that
they were reorganizing and revamping the monitoring sytem. What that MEANS is
anyone's guess. But since last year, when fix dates were offered, and then
unable to be met, and the tar and feathering they got because of it, means they
are not going to estimate any more.

I haven't tried it, but have you considered setting up a User ID system. You
could use Jnsn001-Jnsn999, Smth001... Then they will sort in the individual
index, and reports can only UID, or mixed with RIN. Good luck,

I don't use the Source Writer myself. It's just another thing to get in
sync with. Right now, it's easier not to. If there's any kind of
notation at all on the tree that you found, I'd put that in. I have
some similar 'unknowns' and I put them under a general category. For
instance, Ancestry World Tree Project: unknown. If there's no
information given, what can you say?

Actually, now that I think about it longer, you may want to set the
Primary Condition as Individual - Master Source - contains Lancashire
1861, then add a second condition as I described.

Try Search > Detailed Search with the Primary Condition
set as Individual, Source-Citation, contains, and enter the
name of street or area. Then Create List > Print. You
will have to search and print a separate list for each
street name/area, but at least you should be able to pull
out the data.

While I am more of a splitter and my work is almost 100%
USA, (for this very reason; I have a master source for each
township or enumeration district in each census year), I did
have a roughly equivalent situation that this procedure was
able to pull up for me. Let us know if it works for you.

Since I use Ancestry.com as the repository of the record creator, and in the
Source fields use both names, I would list it as an authorless document, the
same way I treat Newspaper clippings with no date or paper name. But of the
about 20 I had at one time, I mhave located 18 of them.

Actually one of the reasons I chose to move to Legacy when it became
obvious that the program I had formerly used was no longer going to be
supported by the company that bought it, was the responsiveness I did
see from Legacy.

Very few of the other programs that are out there actually have staffers
answering their lists. More are trying it now, but I don't think they
have been nearly as successful as the interaction I have seen here, even
with the delays we saw in bringing out Legacy 7.

In a perfect world, yes, we would all get individual answers and know
exactly in which order bugs and fixes are being worked on. It's not a
perfect world.

And Richard - your response gives me hope. I still have a couple of
comments about DOS that M$ must be working on. (I so miss DOS - LOL)

Choose "Only tagged sources", "Master sources and all citations to each

For example. My master source is English Census Lancashire
