I was astounded by the number, too. I asked about it saying, "You mean
the salvage value is $171?" The lady said that's what they (people from a
different department) told us. It made the decision to keep it quite easy.

There is a fairly nice 300E sitting at the mech up the road, has been
there for quite some time, some sort of engine trouble I think.
Probably get a good deal on it.

I was thinking you could rebuild it, then I remembered you're good at engine
swaps. Now I think you need to find a rustfree 123 chassis and stick your $170

It's not. He is using irony/sarcasm. CLUE stands for Comprehensive Loss

Significant with respect to the recommended daily allowance?

Hmm, maybe I should at least attempt to do the math. Grains of hardness is
grains of calcium per gallon of water, isn't it?

Since 23 grains of sodium displace 40 grains of calcium, then we're looking at
17 grains of sodium to replace the typical (where I live) 30 grains of hardness.

I'm getting over a gram of sodium per gallon, around 1100 milligrams. That does
eclipse the usual 10mg/liter found in soda pop, but very few people drink a
gallon of tap water in a day.

Not according to the body shop. The fellow had his assistant raise the
right front on a jack and showed me that the attachment for the right
lower control arm was bent backward so the sub-frame would have to be
replaced, which would require removing the engine.

The estimate includes $2275.35 of parts, including,
- Right lower control arm $490.00
- Right strut $294.00
- Right knuckle $350.00
- Suspension crossmember$590.00

It also includes,
- 13.5 hours of body labor $634.50
- 9.3 hours of paint labor $437.10
- 11.7 hours of mechanical labor$877.50
- 6.0 hours of frame labor $450.00
- 9.3 hours of paint supplies $279.00

plus tax for a grand total of $5359.01.

I went to the body shop in Santa Fe with Shirley (and Ori :-) ) in the
'95 E320 and talked with the owner of the shop. After showing me the
damage, he had his assistant swap the left front wheel of the '95 E320
(the more worn of the '95's front tires) with the right front of the '94
E420. With a more worn tire, there was more clearance at the back of the
'94's wheel well. We took off (Shirley in the '95 and me in the '94) and I
noticed the tire rubbed when I put on the brakes. So I pulled off the
road in the industrial area, pulled out the 2 pound hammer I brought
along, banged off the plastic panels on the outside of the body just
behind the right front wheel well, and then banged the metal about 1/2"
further back. I then swapped the other front wheels so both of the 16"
winter tires would be on the front of the '95 and we took off again.

We drove the 43 miles home on back roads (a very pretty drive along
Bishop's Lodge Road) with no problems.

[MBZ] MB to produce another model at Tuscaloosa

2011-10-21 Thread RELNGSON
Daimler has said that it will further expand its US plant in Tuscaloosa,
Alabama. From 2015, an entirely new - unidentified - Mercedes-Benz model will
roll off the production line as its fifth product.

The plant has been the traditional production site of the brand's M-, GL-,
and R-Class SUVs and will also build the C-Class for the North American
market beginning 2014. For the production of the new model, Daimler said it
will
additionally invest US$ 350 million, and will create some 400 further jobs
at the plant.

Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Daimler Board of Management and Head of
Mercedes-Benz Cars said: "This new model from the Tuscaloosa plant is an
important element of our growth strategy. It is one of the ten additional
models
which we will introduce within the next four years alone across all
segments." Referring to the Tuscaloosa plant's role within the global
production
network of Mercedes-Benz Cars, Zetsche added: "At the same time, we are
systematically broadening our manufacturing footprint in the NAFTA region."

Robert Bentley, Governor of the State of Alabama said: "Since the time
Mercedes-Benz chose Tuscaloosa County for its first US assembly plant 18 years
ago, the company has proven to be an outstanding partner for the state. We
join MBUSI in celebrating this milestone, and welcome the hundreds of jobs
this announcement brings to Alabama."

Earlier this year, on the occasion of the Job #1 ceremony of the new
Mercedes-Benz M-Class in July, Daimler announced the decision to invest more
than
US$2 billion in the Tuscaloosa plant (Mercedes-Benz U.S. International -
MBUSI). In total, investment in the plant between 2010 and 2014 will thus
amount to US$2.4 billion, while the number of newly created jobs will add up to
1,400.

Markus Schaefer, President and CEO of MBUSI, commented on these decisions:
"The entire MBUSI team is proud of its role in the success of the models
made in Tuscaloosa. We are looking forward to making further important
contributions to the product offensive of Mercedes-Benz."

A common practice in many countries, too, and just second or third world ones.

In many Asian countries it is not uncommon for the "guest" to bring a "gift"

When I did business in Japan I kept my local liquor store quite busy stocking
Johnny Walker Black for my trips.

Thanks, Rich.

Pretty much what I figured, just odd that there are no manufacturer's
information on either the timer or valve.

It appears to be working. The city water here isn't that hard, so I can't

Re: [MBZ] OT - Water Softener?

2011-10-21 Thread Rich Thomas
I had one of those sitting next to the old well pump, and took it out
and took it apart to see how it worked. The tank was heavy as hell with
the stuff (the little balls that collect the nasty stuff and water in
it), and the salt bin was just like a big plastic trash can with some
piping, and it was heavier, but I managed to dump it all out down by the
marsh (I didn't figure the salt would hurt the salt marsh), and took the
mechanical thingie apart to see how it worked. Basically a flow meter
timer sort of thing that does the back flushing of the salt tank to
clear out the crap the salt collects, once it reaches the activation
point. I don't know if any particular manufacturer would have any
particular innovations on that thing, they seem to be your basic
electromechanical sort of controller that does the one job.

The tank looks useful for something, and I used the salt can to make a
water level when I was putting in my addition deck to get it all leveled
(and the surveyor said I was only off 1/8" over the 32ft! -- yay for
Egyptian technology!).

Got this device in my new house which has absolutely (and I mean it!) no
identifying information on it anywhere. I have been over every square inch of

I am assuming it's a water softener, as it has a timer with a consumption "wheel" that counts down
from 2200 gallons, at which time it recycles. The same knob has a "Backflush" and a
"Recycle" position as well.

There is a reservoir next to it that was empty when I moved in, but for the heck of it I
filled it with a couple of 40 pound bags of softener salt and set it to
"recycle."

If anyone can identify this thing I would appreciate it. When I have time
(ha!) I may crack open the timer box and see if there is anything in there that
might identify the maker.

Re: [MBZ] MB's US CEO canned/sinned

2011-10-21 Thread rogerhga
Allan, Jim,
I worked for an oil company in the 70's when our gov't passed a law making it
illegal to bribe foreign officials in order to get business. This oil company
ran afoul of the law for bribing the oil minister in Nigeria to do business.
Now if anyone cared to look, you didn't do business in Nigeria for oil unless
you bribed the oil minister. Anyway, I think the US politicians wanted the
bribe money to stay in the US and be given to them as campaign contributions or
whatever you want to call it. We, USA, always tries to impose Western morality
on other countries and it rarely works. I'm still waiting to see what's going
to happen with Egypt, Iraq, and now Libya. Sudden changes are not always that
great...seems we never hear about South Africa anymore...all must be well
there.
Best Wishes,

Max, I may not have stretched the bolt BUT there is a hairline crack in the
side of the aluminum housing of the fuel filter assembly!! Assuming this is
the source of the leak, what's involved in replacing it?

Rusty - is the 1985 assembly different from the 1983?

Yes, banks can also subscribe to the NADA Black Book.

My dad had them around when he worked for GMAC, which was nice.  Don't know

[MBZ] OT - Water Softener?

2011-10-21 Thread LWB250
http://gallery.me.com/dpenoff#100298

Got this device in my new house which has absolutely (and I mean it!) no
identifying information on it anywhere.  I have been over every square inch of
it, and not a manufacturer's name, model number, nada.

I am assuming it's a water softener, as it has a timer with a consumption
"wheel" that counts down from 2200 gallons, at which time it recycles.  The
same knob has a "Backflush" and a "Recycle" position as well.

There is a reservoir next to it that was empty when I moved in, but for the
heck of it I filled it with a couple of 40 pound bags of softener salt and set
it to "recycle."

If anyone can identify this thing I would appreciate it.  When I have time
(ha!) I may crack open the timer box and see if there is anything in there that
might identify the maker.

Thanks,

Dan

Insurance companies will start getting nervous once the estimate gets
above 50% of the vehicle value. They know if it was hit that hard there
is often hidden damage that is not evident until repairs are started.
Rather then end up on the hook for repairs that cost more than the
vehicle is worth, they will just offer a write-off at that point.

Fortunately it sounds like that was not the case for you.

Re: [MBZ] Well, they are going to total it

2011-10-21 Thread Dan Penoff
NADA is the only real reference out there. I always love looking at Kelley BB,
as the trade in values obviously benefit the dealer as do the resale prices

NADA Black Book is the one to have. A dealer only subscription service, it is
very accurate, especially on a local market basis.

Jaime,

What was the buyout from your insurance company, if I might ask?

Re: [MBZ] Well, they are going to total it

2011-10-21 Thread Jaime Kopchinski
For your reference, I was just paid about $6500 for my '95 E320 wagon with
110k miles by my insurance company. (Also note the "other guys" insurance
wanted to pay me $5000.)

I found that to be more than enough to buy the parts (original MB) and
repair the car properly, so I did. Just got it back this week. Damage was
to a front fender and bumper, but didn't effect the hood or inner fender.
Its interesting how high the estimate was for really minor damage.

Re: [MBZ] Well, they are going to total it

2011-10-21 Thread Mitch Haley
Maybe you can replace it for $3500. OTOH, you had that car pretty much sorted
out, and anything you buy to replace it will likely need some money and time
thrown into it.

This one is probably worth more than yours, and they've already posted it on CL
21 times since 9-13.

http://albuquerque.craigslist.org/ctd/2656954738.html

Maybe swap wheels and anything else you want with the 320, refuse the $3778, see
if they'll bump it up $500 to close out the claim, and take your money.

What were you going to try to sell it for?

2011-10-21 Thread Mitch Haley
I'm sure you know the $2300 Edmund's retail is a joke. Go to a used car dealer
and see what $2300 really buys.

Is $3778 the car's replacement value, or the check they'll write after
deductible?

Depending on condition, you might be able to replace it for $3500+tax, but I'm
pretty sure that would have to be a private party, not retail, deal.

Where's the car now? Is it at your house? You don't want things like your wheels
and new tires to start disappearing while you still own it.

Mitch.
