Couldn't you just create a script to do all of this for you - to "sudo"
- therefore allying your fears and paranoias?

Then you wouldn't have to worry about doing it manually - ya reckon?

If there is a doubt of it being on or not, do you see it running when
you fire up "drakxservices" ??

Also, you can pass the param to the kernel at boot - either directly or
by modifying the "append" line in your /etc/lilo.conf; but firstly, to
know if it's running as a system service mate.

Guten Tag, Peter.
When you did your installation, did you install all of the kernel
sources and headers? Because if not, then the error is explanatory as
the KDE Control Center is looking for the sources and cannot find the
necessary configuration files.

If, by chance, you DO already have the kernel sources and headers
installed, then there is reason for further investigation and concern.

So, make sure, absolutely sure, that you have the kernel sources and
headers and the likes installed - THEN try opening up the KDE Control
Center again and seeing if that resolves the error, mate.

Firstly, I don't think your fans run at 10k+ rpm - unless it's a new fan
that I ain't seen'ner'heard of yet...

Secondly, are you sure you setup lm_sensors properly in the first place?
It's not that it's hard, but it can be a bit confusing.

You can always re-setup lm_sensors by re-running the sensors_detect
script, and then following through with all the directions; I had to do
this twice before it got right as I was getting basically the same BS as
you just posted.

Now that mine is setup properly and I know exactly how to go through
with this every install, you should get something a bit more legible
like the following:

We can look at it in two perspectives:
1.) It's you.
2.) Mozilla sucks

Now, if it's 1.), then we need to explore how to resolve the issues
within YOU in order to get everything sorted out nicely and have you
operating at your maximum and optimal capacity.

If it's 2.), then we need to convince you to use a better browser.

No need. Unless you're running a news server or a file server that has
thousands and thousands of very small files, and that would be using
Ext3 - else, you don't worry about it.

Make sure you install all the kernel sources and the dev packages; then
you should be able to install it without a hitch.

VMWare needs to have the kernel headers and sources in order to
customise itself to your machine/system.

Bypassing the GUI or what?
Because hardware detection is going to initiate during the bootup
process, it's almost impossible. Unless you want to bypass logging into
the GUI so that you can tailor the configuration prior to actually
starting XWindows - but you'd have to put your system into runlevel 3 so
that it starts up with all the normal multiuser services and processes;
then you can start the GUI as desired?

You need to update the "sources" - so in the Mandrake Control Center, go
to "Software Management" => "Software Sources Manager" => "Update" - and
you can update the sources; that way, when you actually try to update
the system, you're getting the proper listing.

You should do this every so often as the update lists change...

In the /tmp directory, you should have some directories like
/tmp/kde-yournamehere - you can login as root, delete those directories,
then logoff and login as yourself again - THEN try to fire up Konq - you
SHOULD be able to; see how that goes, mate.

The idea is NOT to use ONE partition.
One partition is for the MacOS
You have actually three partitions (if not more)
So you're going to need a /boot partition and at least a / partition
(aside from the partition where your MacOS lives)

There's information about the PPC installation on the Mandrake site, and
there used to be a few PPC users in here, but they're elsewhere now, or
just playing invisible...

Even a small gum tree ain't worth the climb - too much work, too much
trouble. Older gums are even worse. Now if the damn koalas turned around
and started to like pine trees, that would be a different story. Small
gums, especially around the rocky areas, are at least 50-80 ft...

Having a 24 port hub is all you really need. Having the "Internet
Gateway" and all the rest of that crap is unnecessary because you can
share the internet connection from one machine to the rest. It sounds
like a bit of overkill.

But, by all means, having a 24 port 10/100 switching hub would be great
for your network. The machine that actually connects to the "outside
world" would only require that you have IPTABLES or IPCHAINS setup;
probably a proxy for safe measures, and definitely a firewall.

Gay shlafen: Yiddish for "go to sleep".

Now doesn't "gay shlafen" have a softer, more soothing sound than the
harsh, staccato "go to sleep"? Listen to the difference:
"Go to sleep, you little wretch!" ... "Gay shlafen, darling."
Obvious, isn't it?
Clearly the best thing you can do for you children is to start
speaking Yiddish right now and never speak another word of English as
long as you live. This will, of course, entail teaching Yiddish to all
your friends, business associates, the people at the supermarket, and
so on, but that's just the point. It has to start with committed
individuals and then grow
Some minor adjustments will have to be made, of course: those
signs written in what look like Yiddish letters won't be funny when
everything is written in Yiddish. And we'll have to start driving on
the left side of the road so we won't be reading the street signs
backwards. But is that too high a price to pay for world peace?
I think not, my friend, I think not.

When I lived in Hindman, I let a mate keep goats on the property. This
resolved two issues - 1.) Where he could keep his goats, and 2.) How to
keep the grass on the sides of the holler manageable.

Cost to me: ZERO

...and guess how much it cost me to plow my 5 acres of bottom in the
holler? ZERO. Gave a mate a complete system and secured my plowing for
two years (any time I wanted it done).

...and guess how much it cost to clear off all the poplars, walnuts,
pines, birches, oaks and a few cherry trees? ZERO. The mill came and
cut'em up, and I got half the profits. HA (grin)

Now I didn't mind getting out once in a while with a scythe to get some
exercise, but that was by choice, mate. Either to stretch a few muscles
or to clear a bad hangover.

Meanwhile, back on the topic of pictures and websites - why not get
something free like the MSN community and post yer piccies up there Ron?

Hehehehe...yeah - with all the completely and totally awesome case mods

My wife sits over at her computer and tells me the same thing. She's
trying to prioritise "having a life" as well...(same with having
sex)...it's somewhere on the list...

The kids think I'm nuts. Drilling holes in metal, building an air
compressor (industrial strength) just to blow dust out of machines and
spray paint casings, ripping apart hard drives and making 5v helicopters
(gee, that's one I need to take pictures of!), ripping apart old systems
and scavenging all the nuts, bolts, risers, power supplies, fans...
(More fun than watching cricket)

Ok - wallabies live near rocky places - they're smaller version of the
kangaroo - here, on the flood plain below the 400+ metre escarpment,
we'd have "regular" kangaroos - if it weren't for civilisation...

Anyways, the Thermaltake forces air down from the fan THROUGH the block
- the fan on the outside of the case is forcing air DOWN THROUGH to the
Thermaltake...the fan next to the Thermaltake is sucking air OUT of the
case...the fan near the lower front of the case is blowing air towards
the front of the case - to cause the flow of air to not "deaden" below
the hard drives. The PSU fan is also sucking air out of the case.

I've got another 120mm fan - same as the one already mounted outside of
the case - that I'm going to mount so that it would be forcing air into
the lower front section, with a PVC elbow that's cut and modded to then
force the air UP at the HD's, and have an 80mm fan mounted in the top
plate of the case to suck exhaust out and up.

I've created a 'filter' from a postoffice CD envelope with a piece of
foam in it that sits over the 120mm fan - to limit dust going into the
case - and have another for the next fan.

With the current fan/filter setup, there really wasn't much dust in the
case - mostly in the PSU because it's, well, cluttered, and doesn't have
very good airflow.

My next PSU is going to have the ducted fan that sits above the actual
PSU - sucking the dust/hot air out (as hot air rises, ay?).

If I had the cash, I'd try to do a watercooling setup - but that's like
$300 - and well, I got kids...so I can't justify it to the wife. This
fan, the Thermaltake Volcano 7, I justified because the guy at the fair
wanted $45, and I pulled out $35 and said "Hey man, this is all I got"
and well, he took it...(I'm sure he still made money on it...) - and
it's a much better fan than the one that came from Intel with the
Celery, er, Celeron...

My goal is to have the CPU live at 20C - and since this is just a cheapo
case that I can hack/whack to death (and I've got heaps of case parts
laying around) I'm trying to come up with "forced air cooling"
techniques for doing so...I'm also trying to build a "forced air box"
that would have four 120mm fans forcing air through a 2.5cm tube
directly onto the CPU block assembly, and another 2.5cm tube blasting
directly onto the hard drives...(might even remove the HD's from the
system and put them into another box and cool them seperately...)

Fun fun fun...

2003-07-06 Thread Stephen Kuhn
Just had to share these stats with y'all; purchased a new CPU fan today
- a Thermaltake Volcano 7 - so that coupled with the 120mm fan I mounted
just above where the CPU sits - blowing directly down onto the CPU
assembly (I cut a hole in the case side and mounted the fan outside of
the case - it's an industrial 400 cubic metres per hour model) gives me
the following nice stats:
-
CPU Fan: 3154 RPM (min = 3000 RPM, div = 2)
SYS Temp: +30.5°C (limit = +45°C, hysteresis = +40°C)
CPU Temp: +29.2°C (limit = +60°C, hysteresis = +55°C)
SBr Temp: +20.7°C (limit = +65°C, hysteresis = +60°C)
hddtemp /dev/hda: ST340016A: 29°C
hddtemp /dev/hdb: ST340824A: 32°C

Pictures of the case/mod will be posted after I'm done getting the
images down to a manageable size...in a few hours I reckon...(g)

Humorix Holiday Gift Idea #3

iTux Penguin Computer
Price: $999.95 for base model
Producer: Orange Computer, Co.; 1-800-GET-ITUX

Based on the Slashdot comments, response to the Apple iMac from the Linux
community was lukewarm at best. Orange Computer, Co., has picked up where
Apple left behind and produced the iTux computer specifically for Linux users
who want to "Think a lot different".

The self-contained iTux computer system is built in the shape of Tux the
Penguin. Its 15 inch monitor (17 inch available next year) is located at
Tux's large belly. The penguin's two feet make up the split ergonomic
keyboard (without those annoying Windows keys, of course). A 36X CD-ROM
drive fits into Tux's mouth. Tux's left eye is actually the reboot button
(can be reconfigured for other purposes since it is rarely used) and his
right eye is the power button. The iTux case opens up from the back,
allowing easy access for screwdriver-wielding nerds into Tux's guts.

The US$995.95 model contains an Alpha CPU and all the usual stuff found in a
Linux-class machine. More expensive models, to be debuted next year, will
feature dual or quad Alpha CPUs and a larger size.

What happens if you let it sit there for a while - does it start up
then? Meanwhile, if all else, you can boot off the install CD, hit F1
and then try a "linux rescue" - not necessarily to do any repairs, but
to see if you can properly mount the root filesystem - and if so, then
reboot and see what happens again during a normal bootup.

Any print job is going to be temporarily held in the /var directory -
first, how much space is on /var ?

Another thing to think about is what "backend" is it using - CUPS?
LPRNG? - you might need to address the backend driver for that.

So, between the actual printer memory, space on /var and the backend
driver, you should be able to get the printer to spool as much as you
want...

You should be able to do it with using the utility "ethtool" - or by
changing the options for the card's module in the /etc/modules.conf

There are several strategies that you can follow - but I'd need to
clarify what you mean by "copy the data over" - what, just /home
directories? And how do you plan on laying out the data on the disk in
the first place?

Just checking mate.

Ever since I started setting up/selling computers to the public, I've
found that you have to entice the customer specifically by gender. Not a
joke, no humour about it. It's a reality.

To fire up interest in a man, show them "shoot'em up" games, racing
games, sometimes technical stuff, and definitely pr0n.

To fire up interest in a woman, show them chat facilities, something to
write on (a word processor), email and card games - specifically
solitaire type games.

Unless someone has a purely technical bend, or specifically want to
purchase a computer for a particular reason, those two strategies are
what catches each gender.

BTW, back in 1992 I taught a class for teachers - about computers and
using computers. I started the first week of the class by making people
play Solitaire, Minesweeper and "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".
Nothing technical. Just how to use the mouse and the keyboard, open the
application, close the application. No big words, no technical jargon. I
had quite a bit more success with my class than did three other teachers
- my class scored the highest, and became fairly knowledgeable and
proficient on using computers. I didn't tell the other three teachers my
secret.

If you're hell-bound and determined to have a desktop that you can drag
icons to and from, try ROX's desktop along with ROX-Filer - you might
find that it's easier overall on resources, and definitely faster in
response.

Shouldn't be too hard to hunt up CGI/PERL scripts to do exactly that -
last year I found hundreds of different CGI scripts and perl scripts to
fit the bill - biggest problem was trying to figure out which one I
wanted...

Didn't take but about 10 minutes - and that was with reading the
installation documentation; was easy as pie. Rather surprised. On top of
that, I installed "Privoxy", too - yet another 10 minutes AT MOST.

Roland was a warrior, from the land of the midnight sun,
With a Thompson gun for hire, fighting to be done.
The deal was made in Denmark, on a dark and stormy day,
So he set out for Biafra, to join the bloody fray.
Through sixty-six and seven, they fought the Congo war,
With their fingers on their triggers, knee deep in gore.
Days and nights they battled, the Bantu to their knees,
They killed to earn their living, and to help out the Congolese.
Roland the Thompson gunner...
His comrades fought beside him, Van Owen and the rest,
But of all the Thompson gunners, Roland was the best.
So the C.I.A decided, they wanted Roland dead,
That son-of-a-bitch Van Owen, blew off Roland's head.
Roland the headless Thompson gunner...
Roland searched the continent, for the man who'd done him in.
He found him in Mombasa, in a bar room drinking gin,
Roland aimed his Thompson gun, he didn't say a word,
But he blew Van Owen's body from there to Johannesburg.
The eternal Thompson gunner, still wandering through the night,
Now it's ten years later, but he stills keeps up the fight.
In Ireland, in Lebanon, in Palestine, in Berkeley,
Patty Hearst... heard the burst... of Roland's Thompson gun, and bought it.

Part of that would entail "getting in good" with the hardware
manufacturers - that's where Microsoft has made the inroads. It might be
done with smaller, more flexible "start ups", but the big dogs - Dell,
HP and the lot - are all butt-buddies with M$ and it would take more
than a gigantic crowbar to get'em apart.
(Sorry for the colourful metaphor)

Projects like "The Microsoft Refund" help to make inroads in this
arena...and hopefully, with more momentum, the day will come to pass
where the computer systems are sold specifically with OS options.

Use Ethereal to find out what ports it's trying to flood out, then close
the ports. So I take it you haven't installed portsentry and all that
jazz yet?

(If you can't find portsentry on the web, I have it stashed at:

http://thor.prohosting.com/~kilgoret/files/

...just in case, mate...)

The justifications for drug testing are part of the presently fashionable
debate concerning restoring America's "competitiveness." Drugs, it has been
revealed, are responsible for rampant absenteeism, reduced output, and poor
quality work. But is drug testing in fact rationally related to the
resurrection of competitiveness? Will charging the atmosphere of the
workplace with the fear of excretory betrayal honestly spur productivity?
Much noise has been made about rehabilitating the worker using drugs, but
to date the vast majority of programs end with the simple firing or the not
hiring of the abuser. This practice may exacerbate, not alleviate, the
nation's productivity problem. If economic rehabilitation is the ultimate
goal of drug testing, then criteria abandoning the rehabilitation of the
drug-using worker is the purest of hypocrisy and the worst of rationalization.

Fourth Amendment and Drug Testing in the Workplace,"

   10, No. 3 (Summer 1987), pp. 762-768.

You really don't need anything more than to mount the camera - just as
if it were a hard drive. You should be able to run "kdf" and in the list
of mountable devices, the camera should show up; right-click on it and
you should be able to mount it. Once you've mounted it, you can copy the
images where you so desire; then you can delete the images, or use the
camera to format the memory again. Simple as that.

That is definitely one of the best ways of preserving email format and
data - provided, of course, that you have an IMAP server, or the ability
to set one up.

In the past, when I've had customers that have had damaged OE or Outlook
mail boxes that contain viruses/bugs and it hoses up their entire
system, I've copied the data to the IMAP server, deleted the problematic
email(s) and/or bugs, uninstalled their old email client, deleted the
stored mail, reinstalled their email client software, then copied all
their data back down into their client. Magic!

One customer had taken their box to three different shops around town
and everyone said "Has to be completely blown out and you'll loose all
your email" - and this person had some sensitive stuff to their research
(they're a writer) - I was the "last stop". Took 45 minutes, saved every
damn piece of mail and got rid of the nasties.

...sorry, I was rambling...
