Using Rhapsody and Rhapsody Blind
Hi everybody. I've installed Rhapsody and Rhapsody Blind (the accompanying Jaws scripts designed by John Martin) but I'm still trying to get to grips with how Rhapsody works and what settings I need etc. I'm also finding that, even when I move between options in the preferences and so on, Jaws repeats the line above or below, making it hard to identify that I'm ticking the correct option or action. Does anyone please have any audio or text tutorials or website links that can help me in gaining a better understanding of the Rhapsody software and how to access it? Many thanks, Danny

I'd like to know if anyone on this list has tried down loading any music on rhapsody.com I know you have to install the player in order to use it. I'm not sure how to search for an artist on their web site. If anyone knows anything about using this website I'd appreciate any help that you could give me. Thanks. Hi, all! Has anyone used Rhapsody with much success? Are there some good hints about using it that I might access? I recently downloaded and subscribed to just a very basic subscription, but I'd love to use it to put music on an MP3 player. Feel free to write me off-list, as I might have many questions. rhapsody rocks, I've just tried it out, and so far it's pretty dam niffty. It's a little awkward at first because you have to use the jaws cursor to click on something so that the virtual cursor can get focus and then it's like a webpage, with a search box, links of the various types of music and vocal categories. I've only been playing with it for a half an hour and it's pretty dam smooth. it seems to have windows media type control, control p to play, s to stop, and b and f to go back and forth and the like. Then, several weeks ago, I had no choice and had to download the newer version. Since then, my luck has been dismal. I would appreciate hearing how people manage to get to the edit box to type in the artist you are seeking. Before, i clicked on the third occurrence of the word artist in the rhapsody application window, but that no longer works for me. any help will be greatly appreciated. If like me folks are having issues with its access since the new version, maybe we should contact them directly by mail or phone? If so, let's organize this effort off this list. Using Rhapsody.
Hi folks. I just subscribed to Real Rhapsody, and find it amazing. I am able to get around pretty well using virtual cursor mode in Jaws. I found that ctrl+b moves you backward through a play list, ctrl+f moves you forward, ctrl+p plays and pauses, ctrl+s stops a track, etc. Has anyone else found any other keystrokes or other tips for using rhapsody with a screen reader? You aren't missing anything. They seemed to have taken out the MSAA controls of the program. I still use it, but it is a lot harder to use and therefore not as enjoyable. Here's how I do a search. Go down past the playlist region with your mouse keys. When you hear the word artist, click on it. Window-eyes should just say combo box. Do a shift-tab and go back to the search edit box. It will only be one shift-tab. If you don't have to change your search from artist you just write what you want in the text box and hit return. If you want to change the search to track, say, when you're sitting on the combo box just hit the first letter, t for track. Then go back to the edit box, type in the string and hit enter. hi, yeah, I have a love/hate relationship with rhapsody. but i'm using jfw, so I don't know how much help I can be. when I first launch itI usually left click on my email addy. that will turn on the virtual cursor, and let me navigate like a normal web site. then when I lose focus I click on artist or the next thing I look for is release date. sort of strange, I'm guessing you can click on more things then that, but that is what i've gotten into the habbit of. Hi Guys, I have something from my cable company, which is Charter Communications, that they call Charter Rhapsody. I'm assuming it is the same program you're discussing. yeah, that's probably the same thing. because comcast has a link on i't's page called comcast-rhapsody, I didn't know what it was so went to it and found out. they have a freee trial thing that you can check out. I think it's `worth it, but it's dam annoying as well. the quality is perfect, it's fast, and pretty accomidating they claim to have the largest music base, over 30,000 artists, and so on and so on. and with the use of total recorder you can record stuff at an accelerated rate. unfortunately total recorder doesn't support their title bar or whatever, I keep meaning to write to them to find out if they are planning to support it in the future. weren't able to get it to do anything? so you downloaded the prog right? you have to use your jaws cursor to left click on something so that when you take the jaws cursor off you'll be using the virtual cursor to go down the page like any other webpage. Frustrated with Rhapsody
Hi All, I have established my user id and password with Rhapsody, but now I want to select the service I would like and am having a great deal of trouble with that. Also, I find searching for artists or songs very difficult whether I use the jaws or pc cursor. I would take a subscription, but I probably only need around a dozen downloads a year so I would rather pay as I go. Is that possible with Rhapsody? inquiring about Rhapsody
Hello listers, I apologize if this has been previously covered or is off topic but was not sure where else to post the question. The subject line says it--I'd appreciate comments on anyone's experience with Rhapsody which I was considering trying. I want to find out as much as possible before downloading the trial version. Does it allow for files to be streamed via Winamp or one of the other players or does it require an embedded player for this? Are all links and functions accessible with JAWS? Is it free of ads and spyware or will i be bothered with a lot of other garbage if I install it? I assume there is a monthly cost for using the service and then an additional fee for downloads, is this correct? Finally, is the trial version fully functional and what are the actual costs per download or use? Sorry for all the questions, but I found the website rather vague on a lot of these points. I may think of other things I'd want to know but these are my biggest concerns at the moment. Please feel free to write me on or off list with your experiences. Terri: Making Rhapsody Work
I respect your desire to download music legally. Rhapsody is partially accessible and can work for you with a little trial and error. You must know how to use your screenreader though, or you will become frustrated very quickly. I don't mean this to sound rude. I'm serious about it though because it takes some time, patience, and skill to make this or a program like Napster work properly. I use Jaws, so that is what I will describe. Scripting could make this program dance, but I don't know how to do it. If what I've said doesn't make sense, let me know and we can try going through it over Skype if you like. First, load Rhapsody and go into the Jaws configuration manager to make a file for Rhapsody. This will make your life easier. Go to the HTML settings and go to the tab about headings and frames. Make sure it announces that you're entering and leaving frames and that it speaks headings for you. Under the misc tab, make sure it reads element attributes and also turn off flash movies. Save the config file and you're ready to have a go at this. Once Rhapsody is installed and you sign in, your PC cursor won't move around. Route your Jaws cursor to pc and begin reading the screen with your Jaws cursor. Once you see something that says browse genres or staff picks, click on that with the Jaws key for the left mouse button. This will bring the window into focus and will put it all in the virtual cursor. After that, you can read the site like a web page. If you have to tab away from the Rhapsody window to answer a message or something, you will have to repeat this step to get Jaws to read in virtual cursor mode again. Now that it's reading like a web page, you can search for songs or artists, or you can browse genres just like on a web site. Once you find a song you want to listen to, you have two choices. Above the song title, you will find two graphical buttons. One says play and the other says download. Playing is easiest for us. If you want to download songs, choose download and let a few minutes go by. You cannot see the download progress with Jaws, and the Rhapsody library is only marginally useful. The solution to playing downloaded music is to use Windows Media Player to actually listen to your downloaded tunes. By default, Rhapsody puts your downloaded music in your My Music folder in the My Documents folder on your machine. Once you've downloaded to your heart's content, exit Rhapsody and load Media Player to sort or play your tunes. If you're only looking for a small numbers of tracks per year, sign up to the Real Music Store at Real.com It uses the same propietary format as Rapsody and you can buy individual tracks or albums. Price is generally $.99 per track and $9.99 an album though a couple of times a year they seem to have sales and cut the price by around 20%. Chris, One downside to Real Music Player and Rapsody is that your tracks come in a proprietary format identified as .rax. Someone on this list or perhaps it was on another list, indicated that actually the .rax file isn't a real music file, but is a pointer to a site on the internet where the music streams from/through. If you want to "use" your purchased file, you will need to use the burner in Real Player to burn the .rax file to a music cd. It's not the easiest device to use, but it isn't the worst either. Once you have the music on a playable cd, you can re-rip the music to whatever format you wish. However, as this is a compression after decompression of a compressed file, you may have some loss of quality. You should also be able to transfer your .rax files to many different .mp3 players including most Ipods directly from Real Player. I haven't had a lot of luck doing this, but I haven't spent a lot of time trying to figure it out either. If you go the Real Music Store route, it is probably worth paying the one time fee for the plus version of Real Player. There is a very good normalization feature and the ability to print jewel case inserts and some other features that come in the plus version. I think it cousts around $19.99. I occasionally use the Real music store and can download my rax viles (the greedy proprietory form of a Real file) from Realplayer into an MP3 player such as the Creative Zen Plus and the Ilo which I boght on-line from Walmart awhile back. Haven't tried with the Zen Stone, but there's no reason to think it won't work. Seems like there's some weird unhoy alliance between Real.com and the Windows media folks because I think when I transfer my rax files to my portable player, they have a wma extension tot hem, digital rights protected, of course. In any case, I find it easy to transfer my rax files to a device using real player; easier than using the dreaded Windows Media Player which I have to use when I buy files from passalong.com which selss songs in wma/drm format and sometimes in mp3 format. Hi Clifford, When I go to real.com they talk about rhapsody, and when I go to rhapsody they refer to real. I'm wondering if they work together and that perhaps it doesn't make any difference which one you use. Having said that, however, the only thing I seem to be able to get into on rhapsody is the screen where it has all the explanations of what everything is. But I can't seem to actually bring up the music guide or the my account to set up my genres and search for specific music. If I ever get things set up properly, it might be alright. You can use rhapsody but not all of it, for example, I was never able to burn directly using rhapsody but I used the cd burner in realplayer instead. It's the same with transferring songs to a mp3 player, but again you can easily use realplayer. It isn't easy to use rhapsody. It requires a lot of use of the virtual cursor so called in jfw or mouse keys in window-eyes. Chris, Bring up Real Player then hit alt+v to bring up the View menu. Arrow down to Music Store and hit enter. That will bring up the Real Music Store and you can register and purchase music. They are highly related systems, but I've found the Real Player Music Store much easier to use. Let me know if you need more help. Yeah, I'm with you guys. I'm not a fan of subscription services anyhow. The way I get to the real music store is to go to real.com, I use JAWS, so I press insert plus F7 and press the letter R five times or until I hear Real music store, and then it's not hard to register, if I recall. First of all, when I bring up real player it automatically goes out to the internet and plays me about 30 seconds of clips that I'm not interested. I don't know how to turn this feature off. Secondly, if I go into the CD burner how do I locate and add songs to my list to burn. I want to get several songs in a list to burn all at once because I don't want to waste a CD with just a couple of song on it. Thanks much. Chris, When in Real Player, to go the Tools menu, alt+T and arrow up or down, to Preferences. The first item in perferences is how to what page you want Real Player to open. I think you have to tab down once and then arrow through several selections. Then tabe to "ok" and hit enter". I think I have mine set to "Real Player only no browser". You can have it open to the Music Store or the Cd Burner or several other things. As for adding tracks to burn several on a disk. I find it easiest to select my first track as I think you know how to do now. After the CD Burner comes up, I alt/tab back to where I have my music, select another track hit the applications key and arrow down to burn in Real Player. It places that track after the first. I repeat until I have as many tracks as I want or will fit on the disk. Another way to do this is to create a new folder in My Documents with what ever name you want. Copy and paste the tracks you want to burn to this folder. Once you have all the tracks in the order you want (you may need to append numbers before the track name to get the order to stick) do a control+a to select all, hit the applications key, arrow down to the Burn in Real Player buttone, hit it and you will have all the tracks ready for burning once the burner opens up. There is another more complicated way to do this using the add tracks function from the edit menu, but I don't advise that unless absolutely necessary! Hope this helps. Hey, Clifford, It worked! I uninstalled rhapsody and set preferences to real player and I didn't get the unwanted clips when I opened real player. So, then I went to music store and got the screen to search for music. I think this should work. Now I just need to get my list created. Do you put your songs in your library since you said add to favorites was not so easy. Or, do you just make a play list? Chris, I do add all my tracks to the library so Real Player knows where to find them. For new clips, this is done automatically by the program, I think. When I make a compilation type disk, I either create a folder into which I copy and paste tracks in "My Documents" or just add them individually in the order I want them using the highlight, applications key and arrow down to "burn in Real Player" method that I described earlier. hi cathy, well what you gotta do is left click with your jaws cursor on one of the first few lines of the page. usually your email address, the word artist, and after that it will go into virtual cursor and you'll be able to use it like a regular webpage. as far as downloading? I don't know, that's a new feature they've recently added that my girlfriend discovered, she's sighted and she doesn't know how she did it. but usually you just add stuff to your library and stream it when you start rhapsody. but so far none of the menues are accessible. butI still love the service. Yeah, George! It is Rhapsody 3 I've downloaded and I find myself pretty clueless, even trying to use my JAWS cursor to find stuff. I'm most interested in downloading; I guess I have to check out Rhapsody to go somehow. Is there some sort of little tutorial somewhere? The Help file drives me a bit mad, but I'll keep at it. I'm just trying to find a fairlyy inexpensive legal source for lots of varieties of MP3 downloads. If there's a more accessible source out there, I might try that. If Rapsody is difficult try the Real Music Store through Real Player 10.5. It's quite easy to use. There are definitely some problems with Rhapsody. The initial screen presents you with a selection of graphics which are all unlabeled. Finding the correct one can be challenging. For example, Graphic 800 brings up Rhapsody radio stations. Once you get past the initial screen much of the content is accessible. Rhapsody is a large library of music which can be searched & the quality is equal to that of a cd. In order to make the service accessible, the player graphics need to be labeled. Rather than giving up on Rhapsody, I suggest that members of this list subscribe & then start making phone calls to Real Networks customer service. If 50 subscribers made 2 phone calls each week, the marketing department would certainly take notice. I wish the graphics were labeled but they may not even understand the problem as a sighted person can look at the screen and see right away what to do. I think blind people need to remember this when they write or call. They need to spend a little more time than they do explaining what software vendors can do to address the problems of blind people and not just shouting that a software package is inaccessible. As to inaccessibility, all one needs to do is have someone with some sight sit down with them and label graphics. What it is is a service that lets you pick from a catalog of music or spoken word titles songs you would like to play on your computer. I've worked with many providers and helped them to achieve basic access, which usually includes labeling of graphics, but these folks would not respond. Well, what I had was 2.1 build 0.215 but I did a check for update and got 2.1 build 0.227. It appears to be as accessible, but you have to do a few tricks. For instance, if you want to search for a song and you haven't labeled graphics, and just let me say I'm speaking in Window-eyes terms as I don't own JFW, you would use your virtual mouse, go to the bottom of the window, move up by line until something is spoken (by that I mean non-graphic) and left click on it. You're then put in a browser window which you can navigate like normal. If you find what you want and save the album or track to your library you will be put back in to the first screen. The thing about the first window is you initiate everything with the mouse. Let's say you want to pick something out of your library. First you would find your library list with the mouse keys. Then you would left click on any artist. After that you can use your regular arrow keys. You are in a tree view like Windows Explorer. Moving up and down moves through the artists. When you're on the artist you want, hit your right arrow twice and you'll be on the list of albums of the artist you selected. If you haven't saved any albums then you'll be on a list of tracks by that artist. If you want to add the album or track to the play list, route your mouse to the pc cursor and do a right click. There'll be a list of things you can do which you navigate with the mouse keys. When you get to what you want, say, play now, just left click on it. Your playlist window is below the library window. I can only get to it with the mouse keys. You can tell when you get to it because you'll hear track, then you'll start hearing track names instead of artists. On any track in the playlist just right click and again there'll be a list of things you can do with the track or the playlist. Some things to remember, you need to find the CD burning graphic. The one to the left or above it will put you back into playlist mode. When you're in playlist mode, anything you play will be added to the playlist, so you should clear your playlist once in a while. If you're navigating a list of albums and hit the right arror twice you'll be in a list of tracks for the album. Hi Clifford, I'm sure glad I saved your e-mails. I have copied a bunch of stuff from the real player store and I grouped it all together in a file, which I have successfully burned to cd. Now I have two questions. First of all, do I have to move them to cd before converting them from RAX to MP3? Next, I'm using Alive mp3 converter and when I select the cd drive, it gives me the name of the cd, but when I go to view the files it says zero items and I cannot get the list of songs to add to the converter program. I know they are on the cd because it plays. Also I thought I would be smart and go to the file on the computer where I had copied them all and see if I could convert them from there, but I got the same result. It allowed me to go to the file on the C drive, but when I tried to view the list of songs it gave me zero items again. Do you have any idea how I can get these converted to mp3? Thanks much. Hello Chris, Sorry that things are not going so smoothly. First, there is no way, that I know of, to convert directly from .RAX to .mp3. I recently saw a post about a program call All Music Converter that seems to be able to "crack" the protection, but the poster said that the results were not satisfactory in that there were gaps and clicks. What I do is burn my .rax tracks to cd in Real Player. If I want them downconverted to .mp3, I use Real Plaer to rip/save the tracks. In Preferences under the Tool menu, I make sure they will save to .mp3 and choose the highest bit rate. I could get by with a lower one, but I believe that I can hear the difference at 128 kbps. The ripped files take up more space, but my ears are happy! If you can live with a lower bit rate, you can select that. As for you second question, my answer is what I do in response to your first question. I don't know why your converter program won't read the tracks from the disk or from your hard drive. I guess as far as the hard drive file, how did you get the files from the cd to the hard drive? Copying and pasting will not give you a positive result. You would need to rip the tracks from your cd to the file on your hard drive. You can rip them in .wav or .mp3 or any of several other formats. If Real Player doesn't come up when you put the cd into the drive, navigate to Real Player, go to Tools and down arrow to CD. Right arrow and then down arrow to the Save Tracks option for the drive with the cd in it. Hit enter. A menu will come up to allow you to set and select several options. I think there's an "ok" button at the end of the selections. Depending upon how you have things set in Preferences and in the dialogue, your disk drive will pop the drive open when ripping is complete or you'll hear the completion sound you have set in Windows. Your tracks will be ripped to a folder in My Documents. If several different tracks it will probably be in a folder called Various or Various Artists. The album will probably be called "compilation album". If you need more help, please let me know. Next, I'm using Alive mp3 converter and when I select the cd drive, it gives me the name of the cd, but when I go to view the files it says zero items and I cannot get the list of songs to add to the converter program. I know they are on the cd because it plays. Also I thought I would be smart and go to the file on the computer where I had copied them all and see if I could convert them from there, but I got the same result. Good morning, Chris. I am still using 10.5. I haven't felt the need to move to the new version 11 yet. When you open "Preferences", you are in a tree view. Start on "General" and then arrow down slowly to "CD". It should be right after the "MY Library" option. When you get to the "CD" item it will say "closed". Right arrow once to open the item. If you Hear "cd Burner" back arrow once.. Tab down through the options. There's a selection for "Prompt to save tracks". Make sure that's checked. Right after that, there is a list of the different formats to which you can save. The next tab puts you in a Quality selection box. Once you've made your selections, tab down to the ok button. With those modifications, when you put a disk in the drive, Real Player should come up and ask you if you want to save the tracks and if you say yes, will "rip" them according to your selectins. rhapsody? ITunes? pros? cons?
The subject line sets this up I am looking at both I've had a rhapsody account in the past and my so far 2 complaints with it were first that on top of a subscription you appear to be charged on a per download basis Am I wrong? Is there something hidden within rhapsody that I am missing? My second complaint is that Rhapsody does not work outside the US so I was being billed for service I could not use while in the UK. Now to ITunes. First complaint m4a. Now I know most state of the art devices support m4a but I have also heard that manufacturers are moving away from support for m4a. Who is correct? Searching iTunes on the PC is for me a master class in swearing like a sailor but on the phone the process is somewhat less irksome. What if any experiences have you folks had with either or both? With the scripting power of JFW though, I would think someone could come up with a good script. Hi, Tim. I too use the library with some quirky scripts I made, but I wouldn't want to attempt explaining it. Most people would say that the library isn't accessible with how Jaws behaves in the library, and my scripts wouldn't be fit for anyone else to use. Is there an accessible MP3 player that works with Rhapsody?
Greetings list: I teach a music appreciation class at a local community college. In the fall of this year, I am switching to a new textbook, The Musical Experience by John Chiego. Every instructor of the class receives a year of Rhapsody to Go which allows one to transfer songs from Rhapsody to a supported MP3 player. Each chapter of the text has an accompanying playlist. I am familiar with using Rhapsody and have no trouble there. I have also been playing with Applian Technology's Replay Media Catcher program to grab the playlists and convert them to MP3 files. Applian says this is legal, but I have to wonder if Rhapsody would be thrilled. I will use Media Catcher if I have no other option, but an MP3 player with attached speakers would be preferable to CDs and a boom box anyway. Does anyone have any experience with any of the MP3 players supported by Rhapsody? Any help would be appreciated. I use Rhapsody WMA files all the time with Winamp and WMP. As long as you keep your licenses up to date by running the Rhapsody software every so often, they play just fine with any media player that is aware of Windows media DRM. Route Pc to Jaws and then Jaws to PC. JFW works with Rhapsody better than Window-Eyes at present. Also, Rhapsody support from the web has improved considerably. I need to do a complete reworking of my Rhapsody tutorial. Let me try to explain the Rhapsody situation a little better. First, for $12.99 a month, a person can stream tracks to their heart's content. If one wishes to download a track for burning to CD, it must be purchased for $0.98 or less. For $13.99 a month, tracks can be streamed and transferred to a portable player supported by Rhapsody. If one wishes to download or burn tracks, they still must be purchased. It is true that Rhapsody has gone to unprotected MP3 files when purchasing, but I'm not sure how this affects the Rhapsody To Go options mentioned above. I may need to call tech support, wait an hour on hold, and talk to someone who doesn't speak English well and won't have a clue what I'm trying to explain. I suspect I'm going to have to do that, though. 2 questions about jaws working with music subscription services real Rhapsody and napster
hello has any one successfully gotten real Rhapsody 3 to work with jaws? if so what did you do to get it to work? I can't get it to work they completly changed the interface. also is there jaws scripts for the napster 3 program?
