Re: Irene
We in Seattle and down in San Francisco will be counting on your first responders when the big ones hit out here. And it will come. AND, the media won't know about it beforehand. Well, except for the Tsunami. They'll have 6-15 minutes to talk about that. It's one of the reasons I choose to live in a wood frame house 68' above mean sea level. 170 miles from the Pacific and 250 from the nearest subduction zone. 1000 yards from the nearest river (which is tidal where I live, near Puget Sound). Re: PESO: A Breeze in the Pasture
Thanks, Marnie! I was kind of disappointed to see that, too. There wasn't much I could do to avoid it, as she was coming right at me and it was all I could do to keep her in focus. But, I just couldn't pitch it. I was too pleased with the fact that she was still in the focal plane by the time I hit the shutter. She's one of those horses that are difficult to photograph because she likes people enough to just trot right up to strangers. I'll get another shot at her one day, and hopefully will be a little quicker on the shutter. :-) -- Walt On 8/29/2011 10:55 PM, eactiv...@aol.com wrote: Very nice, but bothers me the foot is chopped off at the bottom. Re: PAW--Week 34--Sunflower
Thanks Jack, Dave, Rick, Ann, Paul, and Marnie! Ken: Fair point about the top petal-bit of sloppy cropping there. Interesting about the bright spot--Darrel (my husband) & I had a conversation about it, and Darrel thought it was interesting and added to the composition, so I went with it. Husbands, go figure :-). I might tone it down a bit. I actually eliminated a bright spot lower right of frame with the exposure brush in Lightroom 3, and it worked really well--so well I eliminated it entirely. It's a lot easier to use that feature with my new iMac and Lightroom 3--didn't work so well for me on my computer that just died. As to the desaturation--well, it's really just a reflection of the mood I was in at the time combined with a fair weather loyalty to reality :-). Re: What lens would you like Pentax to make?
I've been shooting with a K24/2.8 for a full year, last year. I like the 35mm EFV, so I would like a Limited pancake DA24/4. I switched back to the DA21 this year because I was tired of guesstimating exposures -good exercise nonetheless. Other than that, the usual: bring back the *200/4 macro and I'll buy it even if I need to sell anything, and some fast glass would be nice, some 20/2, 30/1.4, or 35/1.4 those can be big, but sharp wide open. A mark II of the 16-50/2.8 would be nice as well. On Mon, Aug 29, 2011 at 3:03 PM, Mark Roberts wrote: > I just realized that it's been literally years (two or more) since I > bought a pentax lens. Re: Irene
Here on the coast just south of Boston, we did pretty well. Interesting that we knew to expect more wind damage than water, being on the eastern side of the storm. But there's minimal damage to property, no flooding to speak of. Many neighboring towns are still without power, and will be for days, but we only had a couple of very brief interruptions yesterday. What surprised me most is the toll that the storm took in Vermont. Major flooding, damage to homes, towns, roadways, bridges... I'm not sure anyone expected that extent of destruction up there, being an inland state especially. Today was as beautiful a day as we've had all summer, though. :) -c On Mon, Aug 29, 2011 at 10:34 AM, Daniel J. Re: What lens would you like Pentax to make?
I've used my FA 600 in some pretty rotten weather for long periods of time in some cases - snow, sleet, rain, below freezing and all I've ever done was to protect it by draping a travel towel (not a terry cloth but a highly absorbtive material sold for hikers/campers) over it and covering the front end with a ball cap. It never missed a beat in all the years I've had it. With care, weather sealing has not been an issue for any of my lenses over the 40+ years I've shot Pentax. Wouldn't stop me from buying a lens with it but I wouldn't pay much extra for it if I had to. I try to treat all my geat as the delicate instruments they are. I have the DA 12-24, so a weather-sealed version wouldn't move me to spend. But I would like to see some long glass, perhaps a DA* 400/4 or 500/5.6. What lens would you like Pentax to make?
I just realized that it's been literally years (two or more) since I bought a pentax lens. The fact is, I have pretty much everything I need - the 50-135 and 60-250 are interesting, but not enough to make my break out my credit card (the FA*80-200/2.8 works fine for me). But one thing I *would* buy in a heartbeat would be a weather-sealed 12-24 (or wider) ultrawide. -- Mark Roberts - Photography & Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Paul just doesn't like Bloomberg, that is all it is. Politics. ;-) to Paul. I think the hype was good, it could have been worse and they couldn't predict, when the hype started, that it would DEFINITELY drop down to a 1. Past experience said it was likely, but there was no way to know for sure. (And I've seen photos of the lower part of Manhatten flooded. Which would make sense, because with smaller sensors, and smaller pixels, you get less dynamic range. When they start producing mu4/3 with rear illuminated sensors, they won't get the dynamic range of the K-5, but they might start getting something close to the K-7. What I've noticed among friends shooting Canon is that when they take photos of people, the highlights on the skin look almost washed out, if not blown out. But, I think that could just be a metering, and processing choice. Re: Irene
I spoke too soon yesterday. Shortly after 6:00 last night, our power started going on and off again, every few minutes. Just as we were starting to prepare dinner, the power went out. The Stove wouldn't light, so we had an unplanned barbecue. It is still out at home, but we have power here in the office. There is still flooding in this area. A portion of Readington Road (County Route 637), which is my access to US 22, buckled because it was undercut by flood waters. One lane was open, and construction was under way, and I made it into Somerville without incident or delay. The Somerset County Court House is closed, as are others throughout the state. We are still is a mess, with lost of closed and flooded roads. The apartment building a few hundred yards from our office was evacuated, and is still closed. This storm -- and the warnings -- were never about wind velocity. It was always a question of the amount of water and the coastal and river flooding. That has proved quite damaging in New Jersey, at least. A lot of people have been evacuated and still cant return. A substantial percentage of the homes are still out of power. Roads are still closed because of flooding and flood damage. The rivers are still rising in parts of the state. The warnings were appropriate. KCMO is a very large metro area, and it is not unusual for one part to be threatened while another is totally clear. And of course all threats do not translate into actual events. During every such weather event, Katie (Ch 5) and Brian (Ch 7) and the others would take over their respective airwaves and provide endless commentary on the radar images and on-the-spot reporters and storm chasers. During and after every event there would be an outcry from those who didn't like to have their soap opera or sports event interrupted, or who just didn't want to hear Katie go on and on about hook echos. Katie's response: "if I can save one person's life by convincing them to stay home and under cover, this is all worth it." It is well-established that it is better to take people out of danger via bus before a flood than by helicopter from rooftops during a flood. It is better to pre-position sandbags where flooding is likely than to be making phone calls trying to coordinate acquisition of the bags and sand and volunteers to fill them while standing ankle deep in rising water. There will be fewer casualties and fewer fatalities (e.g., in Joplin) if people take cover because of broadcast warnings. So sometimes the predicted high winds during the storm turn out to be less an issue than the record-breaking floods that follow; that doesn't mean that it wasn't a good idea to have been prepared. My own closest encounter with a tornado was a few years ago. I had been out running errands; the look of the clouds and the "severe storm" and tornado warnings on the radio and the sirens going off got my attention. When I got home, I turned on the TV. About 10 minutes later Katie was zooming in on a section of the radar; "This is what a tornado looks like. It is moving along this line. It will hit Parkville in 5 minutes. If you are in Parkville listening to me now, then stop listening and get into sheltar. Now!" That included us, and we went to the basement. As it turned out. the tornado was on a straight line towards our house. But when it reached the Missouri river about 2 miles southwest of us, it executed a 90° turn to the east, followed the river for a mile, did another 90° turn and proceeded on its way to the northwest. So our time in the basement was an unnecessary precaution, but I did not regret listening to the warnings about what might happen, and I was grateful for the people who provided the warnings. stan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

OF course, I'm in NYC and having been in a situation where knowing all this stuff ahead of time really did matter one thing now occurs to me since there is a bit of grousing about the coverage... Didn't really know (and still don't) that the whole world was getting um saturated with TMI about it - we who live here in the path appreciated it And they did it without commercials, too. ann -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Pentax Character?
As opposed to "characters", which refer to you folks. I look at the mu43 website and there is a definite difference in the overall character of the images. The PDML photos seem to have a much subtler range of tones whereas many of the mu43 shot seem harsher, especially with regard to blown highlights. It is the dynamic range of the bodies, firmware choices, or simply preferences in post processing? I've never really looked at Canikon sites so I really have no other APS-C standard of comparison -- Steve Desjardins -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

That's pretty much how all news stations operate. They did it here last September. The local news channels each sent one of their anchormen to broadcast the evening bulletins from in front of the only visibly badly damaged building in town. I guess it'd make for pretty boring news if they sent a crew out to our place to see how easy we've had it. Re: NorCal PDML Meet
John, I could give you a ride, if you're still in Walnut Creek. I am now in Concord. Our destination may not be that close to public transit. Not that we've settled on a destination yet. ;-) Okay, we've got a good-to-go from: Larry, John Francis, John Celio, Bruce, Godfrey and me. Raises the question if Sasha, Marco, and Pat are still around on list and/or would like to go. What, I personally, would like to do is: hold off on the destination question for about two weeks, and that still gives us plenty of time to plan. Post a NorCal meet announcement again in about a week and see if anyone else responds, and start putting together a list of email addresses (including old ones). Then take the discussion off list to brainstorm destinations. Well, something like that. Something like that time frame. We don't have to rush on planning where... yet. Anyway, it's a go for Oct. 29th. Great! MARK YOUR CALENDARS. We're on! Think of possible destinations and if I've forgotten anyone that we might contact, please email me privately. Marnie And I'll get to hold a K-5. Heh. In a message dated 8/28/2011 8:18:09 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, n...@neovenator.com writes: I'm free on that day and would love to meet up with everyone.
