Wonderful gallery! You really seem to have captured the spirit of the event.

Were these different colleges and universities competing? I see that cars had
corporate sponsorship in some cases. Must be an expensive "hobby".

I'm sure the kids will love your photos.

This is a big gallery of photos from Saturday's Power Drive finals.
Normally I try to make much smaller galleries, but this is for the
kids. They spend all year making these electric cars and they all
want to see their team's car and use the photos on Facebook. I don't
think anyone here in PDML will look at everything in the gallery.

These competitions are a lot of fun to shoot. I was joined by four
other members of the Omaha Camera Club. The day starts at 7am with
check-in, safety inspections, performance and braking trials. The
actual races don't start until about 10am and finish around 2pm. It's
non-stop action and fairly spread out. My pedometer clocked over 5
miles while I was on site.

If I wasn't a believer in Lightroom for big batches of photos, I
certainly am now. This is the first relatively big job since upgrading
to Lightroom 4. I imported everything into Lightroom on Saturday
evening and made my selection of about 150 finalists on Sunday
afternoon. Monday, I made the final selections, then cropped and
processed what you see in the gallery. After processing a few photos
to see what needed to be done I made a three presets for processing
the remainder. Other than cropping, they could all be processed in
batches and it went fairly fast. The upload to Smugmug took a while.
Like most everyone, my internet provider's upload speed is much slower
than the download speed.

I'm looking forward to doing this again next year. I always get ideas
about how to shoot better next time while I'm processing the current
batch of photos.

June PUG (and what's happened to May?)

2012-05-09 Thread Brian Walters

G'day all

A bit of a hitch with the May PUG. It's ready to go but there's
currently a server issue which is preventing me uploading it. It's
being worked on so it should be up soon.

In the meantime, give a bit of thought to June - we have something a
bit unusual.

The theme is 'Songlines'. Pick any song title (or title of any piece
of music) and submit a photo that illustrates that title. The photo
doesn't need to fit the theme or mood expressed in the actual music,
just its title.

When you go to the submission form, you'll see two additional fields:

* Song: Artist Name

* Song: Web URL, if available

As I said, it doesn't have to be a song - any piece of music is fine
and I'll amend the wording when I can next upload to the server. The
Web URL is optional. However, if you know where the piece of music
can be heard online (eg. YouTube or MySpace), include the URL so we
can all have a listen and maybe educate ourselves to some new music.

This should be fun!

As usual, submit here:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

Submission Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

The main requirements are:

* Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels
* Max file size: 300k
* Third party equipment is acceptable provided either the camera body
or lens used is Pentax.
* If you embed a colour space in the image, it should be sRGB to
ensure that the image is displayed correctly on line.

* Nominal closing date for submissions: 31 May.

Paul, another good portrait...Joe

A young woman, who appears to be of middle-eastern descent, sells
bread at the farmers market every week. I've photographed her
before, but haven't gotten anything I like, Although I don't know
her name, she's a friend of sort, as we've spoken briefly many
times, and she always has a smile for me. Most of my previous
portrait failures have come when she saw me shooting and became self
conscious. She never objected, but always became artificial. This
week I managed to shoot her unawares from in from of an adjacent
booth.

I don't like the background clutter and may take the time to modify
it by removing the green verticals. Anyway, here it is as shot, save
for a bit of retouching and a moderate crop to eliminate some
foreground clutter..

Re: PESO - Power Drive Revisited

2012-05-09 Thread jn289
George, A nice set of photos. I had photo assignment years ago at a
college in downtown Philadelphia to photograph a car like the ones
you have on your page.

When I find it. I will put it up..Joe http://photo.net/photos/pjjdxn

The annual Power Drive final competition is coming up in May. High
School students from all over the region spend the year designing and
building electric cars. The day starts early with safety inspections,
performance trials and ends with several races.

This is a photo from 2011. While going over last years photos I
decided to reprocess this one with Lightroom 4. If I hadn't already
been convinced to upgrade, this result would have pushed me over the
edge. The new process engine pulled out much more color and detail.

I think this may be the first time I've linked a photo from google+.
Let me know if you have any trouble.

Three GESO's from last Saturday, Castle Rouge Manor, Cinco de Mayo in Eureka Springs, and Super moon Rising.

Last Saturday, Diane and I went to Castle Rouge Manor with the PSNWA group
that
we belong to. Spent a couple of hours photographing there, then we went into
Eureka Springs, Arkansas for lunch and a photowalk. That evening, I decided to
go to a small local lake and photograph the rising of the "Super Moon" from the
top of the dam at sunset/moon rise.

- agreed, the lens gets out of the way when shooting eagles on a
nearby treetop as opposed to mountains 10km away
- I hand-hold the lens. Which got a lot easier with the K-5 because I
don’t mind shooting at ISO3200 so I can have a fast shutter speed even
when it’s not very bright. Except for when you’re sitting there aimed,
waiting for the eagle to fly away, your arms get tired fast.

Re: GESO: Faraways

2012-05-09 Thread P. J. Alling
Nice, the results seem to be consistent with those from my considerably
more beat up Vivitar TX mount 400mm f5.6. Since the cosmetics are
identical, except for the addition of a TX mount ring, I expect that
they are identical optical formulas late 70's early 80's Tokina products.

The results are much better, maybe better isn't the best word, lets say,
sharper and with higher contrast, (though the contrast may be the result
of atmospheric effects), on closer subjects, as if it were optimized
for focus distances of about 100-200 yards as opposed to infinity.

I read your description and thought I'd mention that there doesn't
seem to have been a dedicated tripod mount for this particular lens. I
don't know if was because it was thought to be small and light enough to
be used primarily hand held or if for the same reason it was thought
that photographers could simply hang it off the end of a camera mounted
on a tripod. When I got mine it came with a third party, (third, third
party? fourth party? whatever), tripod ring that didn't really fit the
lens, the previous owner had built up the lens barrel between the focus
ring and aperture ring with some kind of shiny metal tape. It
interfered with the aperture ring, I removed it a while ago and haven't
missed it. the lens doesn't weight any more than a Pentax A* 300 f4.0
and I just use the camera tripod socket with either on my crappy travel
tripod, (I've got to find a word that begins with t that has the same
relative meaning as "crappy" to complete the alliteration).

^^^ Loreo lens in a cap with Loupe Lubot 10× magnification. Very nice
small plastic pinhole lens with variable aperture holes and 10×
magnification loupe for macro closeups. I haven't used it earlier
with ,y K-20 because live view had to be digged from the menu. Now with
K-5 its just one button press and I could actually use F/16 when I see
what I photograph. Focus is manual, either rotating loupe thread or
moving camera. Latest is more preferable when hand-held.

Re: GESO: Faraways

2012-05-09 Thread Darren Addy
I like all three images a lot.

"Back in the day" the standard 400mm was an f6.3. Tamron made one that
was sold under a myriad different labels and gave quite good
performance. I imagine that some sacrifices had to be made to gain the
speed (at least before the use of ED glass, etc.)

I also read the story of your Tokina. I think it is an interesting
exercise sometimes, to just plant oneself somewhere and then see what
sort of good images can be made without moving... just looking in
different directions and working on our "eye", composition, etc.

Re: GESO: Faraways

I like those, Tim.

Per your discussion, Lightroom has a nice Grain effect under the
Effects tab in the Develop module. I've used it to produce dreamy
softness or contrasty graphic noise. You have to play with the 3
sliders a bunch to get a non-"digital" looking result, but it's worth
while.
