Should be soon. Scott has taken down the December submission form in
the last day or so - I expect he'll be posting the December gallery

Best of luck in the new city. I think you'll enjoy it down there.
Despite the so-called Sydney-Melbourne rivalry, and much as I like

Top stuff. And it looks like I'll finally have some time to myself now
(we've sold and move to Melbourne next weekend), so I'll be trying to

Subject: Pentax Users gallery (PUG) - Themes for 2011

G'day all

Here's the short list of potential themes for the PUG in 2011. Only
January is locked in but the others will be locked in by the end of the
week unless anyone feels that some are simply too
easy/difficult/obscure/impenetrable:

January: Patterns in Nature
February: Life's Simple Pleasures
March: Big Weather
April: Memories of Kodachrome
May: Found Objects
June: Close to Home
July: Strange
August: Monochrome Landscapes
September: Self Portrait
October: Roads
November: Underfoot
December: The Ravages of Time

The list has been compiled based on suggestions received and looking at
past gallery themes.

Note that if you don't want to submit a themed image in any month, you
can submit a non-themed image as part of each month's 'Open Gallery'.

As mentioned in my previous post of a few days ago, the January
Submission form is now open at:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

And the Submission Guidelines are here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/PUG-Guidelines.html

Submissions will be accepted until 31 December, at least

G'day all

Here's the short list of potential themes for the PUG in 2011. Only
January is locked in but the others will be locked in by the end of the
week unless anyone feels that some are simply too
easy/difficult/obscure/impenetrable:

January: Patterns in Nature
February: Life's Simple Pleasures
March: Big Weather
April: Memories of Kodachrome
May: Found Objects
June: Close to Home
July: Strange
August: Monochrome Landscapes
September: Self Portrait
October: Roads
November: Underfoot
December: The Ravages of Time

The list has been compiled based on suggestions received and looking at
past gallery themes.

Note that if you don't want to submit a themed image in any month, you
can submit a non-themed image as part of each month's 'Open Gallery'.

As mentioned in my previous post of a few days ago, the January
Submission form is now open at:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

And the Submission Guidelines are here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/PUG-Guidelines.html

Submissions will be accepted until 31 December, at least

Yes, I think that we should have a section for "Open Gallery" or
non-theme images in every monthly gallery, as we did some time ago.
That may encourage more people to contribute.

Speaking of which, any news on the December PUG?

As an exercise, I went back and downloaded all my PUG entries, over
the past 11 years -- 122 in total -- to my photo.met gallery. Some I
had forgotten about, some I coulde no longer locate on my computer.
It was an interesting exercise.

Re: Pentax Users Gallery (the PUG) - Changes for 2011

2010-12-05 Thread Paul Sorenson
JAlbum/Chameleon lets you create multiple album folders. You can either
put submissions in separate theme/non-theme folders on an index page -
like this...

http://jalbum.net/browse/user/album/835317/

Or you can put the themed album on the main index page along with the
icon for the non-themed sub-album. Either way you need to go back to
the main index page to navigate to the sub-albums.

You can also designate an image to show as a thumbnail for any given
folder instead of the generic "folder" image.

I don't think that Scott stopped accepting those submissions but I
don't think that JAlbum supports a way to segregate a second sub-album

I guess I have two questions, are we now not going to accept
non-themed submissions or are we just going to continue on as before
with the themed and non themed photos mixed together? Not that I
remember the last time a non-themed photo was submitted mind you, and
I phrased that as one question didn't I. Oh well...

Just to clarify what the PUG is all about for those new to the list:

The PUG is this list's monthly themed photo gallery - it has nothing to
do with the 'Pentax Photo Gallery' run by Pentax USA. Basically, list
members submit an image based on the monthly theme, the images are
compiled into a gallery and each month the gallery is uploaded for the
enjoyment of all. The galleries are archived permanently and you can go
back as far as 1998 to enjoy the images submitted in the past.

The PUG is hosted on the Komkon server, facilitated by PDMLer Igor
Roshchin, for which we are extremely grateful.

There probably wont be too many obvious changes to the way the PUG
operates. Igor has installed the scripting software for the Submission
Form on Komkon, so there will be a new location for that form but, like
Scott, I'll be compiling the galleries using JAlbum, so they will look
much the same as in the past.

I'll post further details and themes for 2011 in a few days.

The 'Open Gallery' component of the PUG seems to have declined since
about 2006. I had assumed that this was because of the increased
popularity of PESO/PAWs and that there were very few "open gallery"
submissions.

There's no real reason why they couldn't be re-instituted if members
want that feature. I think JAlbum could be set up to do it using
sub-folders as part of the gallery compilation process but, even if not,
it wouldn't be difficult to separate the themed and non-themed sections
by editing the index file manually.

So, any interest in including 'Open Galleries'? Feedback would be
appreciated

G'day all

As you may be aware, Scott has decided to step down as PUGmeister and
I've agreed to try to fill his shoes. May be a forlorn task, but we'll
see...

2010-12-05 Thread P. J. Alling
In the past IIRC the past part of gallery was set aside for non themed
submissions.

I don't think that Scott stopped accepting those submissions but I don't
think that JAlbum supports a way to segregate a second sub-album on the
same page.

I guess I have two questions, are we now not going to accept non-themed
submissions or are we just going to continue on as before with the
themed and non themed photos mixed together? Not that I remember the
last time a non-themed photo was submitted mind you, and I phrased that
as one question didn't I. Oh well...

man cat(1)

It will be called steganocatography.

At that point the PUssycatGallery will be watched by the
Cat Investigation Agency and Feline Bureau of Investigation.

Took me a while to figure out where the implicit violence was in the

What you really need is an accordion. Burns longer and gives a
brighter flame.

So now it begins the Banjo Jokes.,,

Question: How do you know the stage is level at a bluegrass concert?

(note that it is not a "Pentax USER Gallery" aka PUG!)

I might be overly cynical, - but with the huge number of shots in the
gallery, the likelyhood of some random visitor seeing your shot is
rather small (unless your photos are the "featured" ones, - like those
of Paul S.). Only those who went via direct link to the page with
your shots will make it there. But then, - it is not much different
from your own website gallery.
Hence, the main motivation to get your shots accepted is to get
the warm fuzzy feeling from that fact itself.

To rephrase an old joke:
What is common between posting your pictures to Pentax Photo Gallery and
peeing dark pants?
Nobody notices it but gives a warm feeling.

(I don't mean to offend the feelings of anybody who has their photos
in the gallery, I'm just being facetious.)

I would also agree with what John said about the first 2 photos.
As for the 3rd photo, on the initial viewing, I missed that sign
on the photo. Indeed, it makes the situation rather ironical.

Re: RE railroads - was Re: Pentax Users Gallery - theme: professional

2003-09-13 Thread Anders Hultman
Stan Halpin:

Hi Anders! I think I would half agree with Paul about your train photos. He
says too touristic. For me that would mean that you are using cliche
composition. I think the issue is rather that you are being a recorder of
events rather than an artist.
I haven't thought so much about my goal with these pictures, but when
you say it, it may be that my aim is to record and document rather
than being overly artistic. Or touristic, for that matter.

In the case of the pictures from the abandoned railroad cars and
tracks in the industrial park, the aim definitely was to document how
the site once looked like; it is now torn down.

For the excursion pictures, the aim is not that clear cut, but since
these excursions are more or less one-off events, one of the most
important reasons for taking pictures at all is to "save" what I
experience during the ride. And it's quite hard to both photographing
artistically and participarting in the excursion at the same time. I
have thought of going to some railway on any ordinary day and then
I'd have more room to concentrate on the images.

"Touristic" to me means the classic "this is me in front of X, this
is me in front of Y" pictures, and those I want to avoid :-)

I would suggest as an exercise that the next time
you go "training", you use nothing but a 135mm and take nothing but
details... How about Sunday 28 Sept? (My birthday by the way...)
Now, that would really be a challenge! I happen to have a 135 prime,
but I very seldom use that, or the 135 position on my 28-200 zoom for
that matter. I tend to use 28-50-200 most of the time. Maybe I should
do some dedicated 135 mm exercises, just to get a feel for it.

people I am not their Mom and hate nagging, but push come to shove I just about
always have to do follow-up letters nagging them to complete their reviews.
(Well, 90-99% of the time, some just do it.) (We are talking reviews of hobbyist
computer games here, BTW.)

Maybe just encouraging people to do some comments is better. Like, say, you
do some comments, I do some, others do some, and just put at the end of our
posts a general call for more comments. Hey, I did some, you do some too!

I find just picking out 5-8-10 is best. Hard to do them all.

And sometimes I hesitate because I am not an experienced photographer and my
comments tend to be more toward color balance and composition, and sort of
arty, but no technical stuff. And probably uninformed.

But I figure people like feedback, even if brief or not what they
particularly wanted to hear about their stuff.

I have noticed, since I've been on the list, that people usually, actually
get more comments when they post a URL to their latest stuff than when they
submit things to the PUG. Comments on submissions to the PUG are hit and miss.
Maybe 30 people submitted, but only 8-10 got comments ;-). But posting URLs, just
about everyone gets a comment or two.

Anyway, if you want to organize something feel free, frank, but I recommend
not volunteering for something that may become more of a headache than you
think.

Maybe just a general call for more PUG comments at the end of one's post of
comments would be best.

Re: Pentax Users Gallery

2003-09-12 Thread frank theriault
Hi,

Well, some months I critique my faves, once in a while I do them all - it depends on my
time and inclination. I don't think I've done it in a few months, mostly because my
monitor only does b&w, I'm too cheap to buy a new one, and I feel uncomfortable
commenting on colour pics if I can't see the colours!

A few years ago, Chris Brogden, late of this list, organized a little critque group.
Each month, all those who were part of the group were "assigned" a number of photos,
and critiqued them on-list. It went on for maybe 6 months, and kind of devolved.
People didn't "complete their assignments", and I think it just became too much for
Chris. All photos were open to criticism unless a specific "no comments please" was on
the photo.

It was fun, but I have to admit, it was hard to comment of photos that I really didn't
like. I'd always try to find something positive to say to temper my criticism, but
that's not always easy.

I think such a loosely organized critique circle might be fun to start up again
though. Anyone interested?

cheers,
frank

I am and was more in favor of keeping _critiques_ off-list except for the
concept of faves or that tech stuff that sometimes in interesting. I think the idea
of mention favorites and why the speak to you is fine, but correct and critique in
private.

What I Had gone on about recently was merely suggesting that no oneshould submit
a photo to the PUG that they are not pleased with themselves..

PDML is fine for showing stuff to each other one is not happy with and asking for
help,
but keep that separate from our gallery.

Ugh - now I'm getting into this and don't have much time to elaborate

Hi!

Just by the way, getting a critique on one photographs should help
them to extract more from their equipment and learn/advance a
technique they are using.

So, at least by the above reason we might need to increase PUG
critique volume .

What makes you unhappy with the results?

I find that railroads are a bit tricky to take pictures of, since
both cars and tracks are so very, very big. You can't back off to get
a bigger picture since then you'll get unwanted objects in the
foreground, often hiding the main thing, and if you use wide angle
the perspective gets distorded and straight lines get inclined in a
bad way.
