[RBW] Re: 60cm Sam Hillborne for a 6"4 kind of guy

2024-05-22 Thread a spen
Dash, I am just ~4 cm taller than you and would be hesitant to recommend
it. Like Kai, I also had a 64 Sam and it was marginally acceptable with a
very tall stem. Unless you are young, flexible and dead set, I’d suggest
you pass on this one.

[RBW] Re: Platypus or Clem - Please help me choose

2024-01-02 Thread a spen
Sean, I will second Sarah's sentiments about the Platy. I have owned both
and found the Platy to be responsive, agile, stable and an utter a joy to
ride, not to mention handsome candy for mine eye. I'm tall and so both
bikes turned out to be too low a stack height for me, to my great
disappointment.
The Clem feels more utilitarian to my riding sensibilities. Having said
that, I think you might want to consider how much does the quality of the
ride really matter to your sweetheart, and I'll use my better-half by way
of example. She is not at all a connoisseur of these marvelous machines and
would be equally happy with the ride of either bike, and would most
certainly be upset with me for buying her the pricier steed if the more
budget one was available. Having said that, it would be awfully hard for
me personally to NOT buy her the Platy.
Don't know if this helps or clouds the process, but good luck with your
decision.

Re: [RBW] Re: Homer Hilsen: Braking performance

2023-04-26 Thread a spen
I'll add another vote to the "Like 'em" column. I have them on my Ram with
a 650b conversion, so they are fully extended. As others have said, they
cannot compete with disks, but I have never found them lacking.
I wasn't always as positive about them but then someone on another thread
mentioned about being sure to match the right levers with the right brakes,
and sure enough, I was using long-pull brake levers which provide less
mechanical advantage at the lever, so swapped them out for short/standard
pull and it made all the difference, I greatly enjoy them now.
For reference, I run about 230 lbs, and ride in the very steep Appalachian
mountains of Virginia, and never-ever-ever ride in the (bad for you) drops .

Re: [RBW] Re: cycling attire for cold rain

2023-03-22 Thread a spen
As a cold weather cyclist in Maine in the 80's, with Minnesota and the
Appalachian mountains more recently, I'll add to the OP's revelation
regarding neoprene that a set of neoprene pogies (or bar mitts) on the
outside, coupled with wool gloves on the inside, gets me through everything
from 40 degrees and rainy, to -20 and breezy. I simply match the
thickness/warmth of the inner wool gloves or mitts to the conditions, and
if it's 50 with wind and rain, just pogies alone will keep my paws warm and
toasty. I've experimented with all manner of thick and clumsy arctic
military mitts (compliments of my time spent in Uncle Sam's Navy) to boiled
wool mitts (compliments of my time spent on a Maine "lobsta boat") and
found an outer layer neoprene pogie supplemented with the aforementioned
woolies underneath provide the greatest comfort & flexibility for a range
of temps and conditions while on my ride.

It was 48 and heavily raining on, Tuesday I think, riding from Goleta

 to go.

We came upon a surfing shop. I know nothing about surfing or scuba, but
I bought the socks, gloves, and a hat that surfers wear with their
wetsuits. Wow, what a game changer. We were instantly comfortable. For
heavy rain in cold weather, neoprene is great for cycling.

[RBW] FS: Workcycles Pastor Fiets Dutch bike 61cm - Unique stateside

2023-03-20 Thread a spen

After many-many years of longing to try out a Dutch bike after reading
Grant's high praise of the same, I finally landed one, knowing it would
likely be too small for me, and sure enough, it's just not a good fit for
these too long and lanky frame and legs. It is more suitable for someone
in the 5-10 to 6-4 range.

The Good:
--It's an utter joy to ride, unlike anything else I've ridden here
stateside. Helped me to appreciate what something like 60% of Dutch
commuters experience daily
--Has the optional front and rear racks, capable to hauling half-a-house
worth o' stuff
--Completely weather proof/bomb proof over built bike. With the mudguards,
internal hub, drum brakes, protected chain it requires only yearly
maintenance.
--The upright seating position on the super comfy saddle is a revelation in
how comfortable a diamond frame bike can be.

The Not as Good:
--Holland is flat and so a heavy, well built bike suits the Dutch just
fine. Hills can be tough and a rider should be open to dismounting and
pushing from time to time. Have thoughts of carrying it up stairs to your
third floor apartment? You might reconsider, this guy is a tank.
--It's slow and has a narrow range suitable for flat commutes and errands.

I travel frequently between DC and Atlanta so delivery may be possible.

Please ping off list me if you'd like more info/pics, etc.

I love a poncho when the wind allows, but when it's too blustry I use a
rain jacket and Rainlegs Chaps** (such as in the Clevercycles link below).
I bought my first pair from Wall Bikes in NOLA (who remembers them? Sadly
the owner retired and closed up shop) and got a good 10+ years out of
them. Well worth the $$ IMHO.

I find it to be a more forgiving, compliant, and spritely ride than the Gus
& Suzie, and if it had a greater stack height it would be my perfect all
arounder, but the combination of my too tall pbh (99cm) and needing
handlebars up higher still just doesn't work here.

Having owned/own a slew of Rivs, this would be my candidate for 'the one to
rule them all'. An incredibly versatile, capable, and of course, being a
Riv, fun.

--$1475 for complete bike. I have many parts that can be swapped out such
as a Brooks B67 saddle, Albatross bars, etc it interested.

Thanks Kim, I appreciate the information, though I will have to admit that
I would be even more appreciative had I received this info via a message,

I am rather unfamiliar with this type of saddle, and it is to my chagrine
that I would buy, and then resell defective/worn merchandise from/to the
terrific folks on this forum.

Hi Fellow Riv-ers,

Please access the link below to my Tumbleweed Prospector. The Riv

Also available are two Bike Friday's. The NWT (New World Tourist) is my

Better yet, by 'em both and get a package deal! ;-)

[RBW] Re: DUB Eagle crankset on a Rivendell?

2022-09-12 Thread a spen

Hi Michael,

I can address the part of your query

--I was wondering if anyone has a SRAM DUB crankset or any other
direct-mount crankset on their Rivendell. I've been reading about the DUB
cranks and they seem actually simpler with fewer parts than a traditional 5
bolt crankset--

Based on my experience with the SRAM NX Eagle 1 x 12. During the pandemic
I was doing a build up and found myself short on matching drivetrain parts,
unable to acquire what I needed, and tired of matching/mismatching bits &
parts for 2 or 3 x 8, 9, 10 cassettes and so broke with tradition and
installed a NX drivetrain on a Gus. It required a DUB BB tool, an
additional 12 or 13 links to accommodate the lng chain stays and a
couple of 2.5 mm shims to accommodate the BB. The operation was smooth and
flawless and I was impressed by the ease and simplicity of installing the
entire unit.

I realize your question is directed towards the SX, but my experience with
the NX has been quite unexpectedly positive.

Hope this adds to the conversation,

Al

Hi Riv-folk,
I have two 700 c wheel sets available (Link to CL post with pics below)

1) The first set is built up with Velo Orange rims and Schmidt Son 28 Dyno
Hub front, and Grand Bois hub on rear. Both are 36-spoke, 100/130 spacing,
22 mm outer width, high polish. Tires are Compass Snoqualmie Pass 44 mm
front and Stampede Pass 32 mm on rear. These have very low mileage, lightly
used, true and in excellent condition. I bought them for a Rambouilliet but
then regrettably sold the Ram too soon.
--$400 /set.

2) The second set is built up with H Plus Son rims, Shimano 105 hubs front
and rear, 32 spoke, 100/130 spacing, 22 mm outer width. These are low
mileage, true, low use, with some minor cosmetic dimples on the high polish
finish, that could easily be buffed out.
--$175/set

Shipping approx. ~$40 conus

Please feel free to message me with questions, inquiries, request,
suggestions, etc.

[RBW] Re: Gus or Susie, am I crazy?

2021-12-05 Thread a spen
Having owned all of the bikes you've mentioned here (Gus, Susie, Jones LWB
complete) I will share that there is no comparison between the Jones
complete vs. the Rivs, IMHO. The Jones complete felt like a sled out of
the box and like you, it was not long in my stable (unlike the Jones LWB
frame I built up which felt much lighter and livelier, though ultimately
not a keeper)
Given the riding you describe I would comfortably encourage you to consider
one of the Rivs you mentioned here.

Hello all! Long time Riv admirer. But, I always hesitate long enough to
 miss out on buying one.

I ride a Chumba Ursa mountain bike. It tows my daughter, grocery runs,
any trail ever. I ride the bike mellow in my opinion, but I’ve been told
maybe I’m more aggressive than I feel. Jumps are common when a water bar
 is
good, even fully loaded. But they are always a smooth landing. I ride a
29x2.6 and find it great for most terrain. Snow is rare but not something
 I
don’t ride in. I had an LWB Jones complete and very much enjoyed the bike.
But, 37lbs without saddle or pedals was my first time feeling like a bike
is too heavy to be fun. And it was the shortest lived bike I’ve ever had.
I’ve never felt that disc brakes were an upgrade really. For reference, I
am 6’1” 170lbs. 90 PBH puts me between sizes on the upper end so that is
always nice to hear what others prefer!

Anyhow, am I a Riv candidate? With the Gus And Susie pre sale starting
soon I wanted to ask the group opinion. I will call them and I’m sure they
can sell me that I am. But that’s their job.

Thanks to anyone who has some insight, I appreciate it in advance!

Ahh, yes, thank you for the clarification. I can easily see the confusion
with how I worded it. Bill, you are correct, the Susie/Gus will be notably
longer with their reach.
I could never quite get comfortable on my Jones due to feeling too
cramped. This is not a problem with Gus/Susie, very comfy and roomy, made
to be used with bars that sweep back.
A side note, my 5'11 daughter is able to comfortably ride my Gus, though I
wouldn't recommend the the L, not the XL, as her permanent ride.
Thanks again for pitching in, Bill.

Hey Eric,
You may recall that my numbers are just a couple inches more than yours and
I own/owned an XL/60cm Gus and a 59 Susie. I would comfortably recommend
either one of those larger sizes for you, especially if you are riding
Jones bars. I know you already know this, but it's worth mentioning that
your riding posture will be much different from your Jones LWB, with it's
tight cockpit. They are great rides!

[RBW] FS: Hubbuhubbuh Tandem L/M

2021-07-28 Thread a spen
Hi Folks,

After a great deal of deliberation, discussions with family and friends,
and much hand wringing, I've decided to list our Hubbuhubbuh Tandem. This
is my all-time favorite ride, but our lives and family have changed and
alas, it is time to let it go.
The bike rides like a dream, is so much fun to ride and quite suitable for
road, gravel, bike paths, and even some off road single track. A very
adaptable ride.

A bit of info about the bike:

--It's a lovely sage green, size L/M. It will (and has) accommodate a very
wide range of riders from 6'9" to 5'1". The captain should be on the
taller side (6' and taller) while the stoker should be between 5'1" and
6'1". I am happy to take specific measurements as is helpful, just let me
know.

--Very easy use at under 150 miles, in Excellent condition & could be sold
as new

--Asking $2650--Possibly open to offers including, a trade/cash deal for an
entry level Rivendell (such as a Clem L, etc) or other bike suitable for a
casual 5'9 rider

Drive-train
--Silver cranks both captain and stoker
--Shimano Deore derailleurs with 3 x 9 gearing
--Currently set up with friction shifters, which is my preference, but I
may have indexed shifters if preferred

Brakes
--Avid brake levers with Shimano V-brakes. The rear hub will also
accommodate a 203 mm disc drag brake

Tires & Wheelset
27.5" Strong and durable, high spoke count (Cliff hangers?) rims with
Velocity hubs and Continental Double Fighter 27.5 x 2.0 tires. Note: the
27.5 wheels on this tandem make it feel surprisingly playful verses 29"
wheels.

Handlebars & saddles
--Boscomoose bars with cork grips & Brooks B-17 & B-67 saddles (would like
to keep these, but they are negotiable)

Possible shipping for ~$150 CONUS

Please shoot me a message with questions or thoughts. Thanks!-Al

[RBW] FS-Clem L 64 --New

2021-03-16 Thread a spen
Hi Folks,
I ordered this 64 Clem-L, along with most of the bits for the build, but
then ended up going a different direction. So, rather than bothering Grant
and co. with a return I thought I would offer it to the group.

A couple of configurations possible for how it could be purchased, this is
what I have in mind:

--F/F/HS (w/ BB & seat post) & Cliff Hanger rims outfitted with 2.8
Teravail tubeless gumwall tires, Silver hubs ($1350)

--F/F/HS (BB & seat post) $900

--A complete build may also be possible if interested.

Frame is lovely Riv Blue, and has not yet been assembled or ridden. Pics
available soon.
Prices include shipping CONUS.

Please PM me and let me know what you think. Thanks!

Al

[RBW] XL Gus--possibly up for sale

2020-11-28 Thread a spen
Hi Folks,
I'm sending out a "feeler" to see the level of interest in a new, blue,
never built up, XL Gus Boots.
New, and ships in the original box.

The Story: After obtaining this one, the opportunity for another Riv that
I'd been pining for arose so I"m trying to gauge interest in this one.

Price would be in the range of $1700 shipped for F/F/HS

So, to be clear, I'm trying to decide between my (nothing less than
wonderful) Riv-options, and this will help me to that end.

Please shoot me a message if interested and let's explore our options

Thanks!

Ray,
I'm currently running Gravel Kings: 50 up front and 43 in back. Room in

[RBW] 68 cm Rambouillet--Blue and lovely

2019-11-17 Thread a spen
Hi Folks,

So I bought this beautiful 68 Ram last spring after patiently awaiting many
years to obtain one. I'm ashamed to admit it, but in the 6-months since
I've had her I have yet to build it up, and lo, now need to part with her.
It's an odd thing to say, but just having the frame hanging around to gaze
at has brought me joy, it's such a lovely bike, but it's time to get her up
and on the road, and so she's available.

I would rate it as a 9+ on a 10 point scale.

--$950--

With the previous seller's permission I'm including a link to the photos
that he took, which is greatly appreciated since his photography skills
surpass mine (Thanks Julian!)

I may be able to deliver if you live along the following line of travel and
can make a quick commitment before setting out:
 Minneapolis--Chicago--Columbus, Ohio--Pittsburg--Virginia--Raliegh,
NC--Atlanta, GA--Biloxi, MS--Minneapolis.

Please let me know of any questions.

Thanks!

Al
